[VIDEO] Umar Gul doubts the seriousness of Shadab Khan's injury and feels that he should have continued playing

That peak was short lived. A year maximum. Otherwise in his 10+ years career he was mostly a mediocre bowler

Shaheen is miles ahead of peak Gul as a bowler. The guy is the first Pakistani to win ICC Cricketer of the Year. Show some respect please
GULL past his prime in 2013 nuked Peak sa with 5 wickets for 6 runs only in t20 lol.

Gull is 50x the bowler that shaheen is, same way Peak Amir is 100x the bowler that shaheen is, same way wahab when switched on in world cups is 30x the bowler shaheen is.

Shaheen's got one inswing which he can't even bowl consistently. Naseem is genuinely superior to shaheen, much superior lol.

He was brilliant in 2011 too until the semis when Sehwag attacked him.

The poster you are quoting doesn't have the faintest clue on cricket and I think started watching cricket after Pak beat India in the T20 WC. That's why he talks with so much faux confidence which is usually the trait of the ignorant.
To be completly fair, he isn't trolling or anything. I've talked to the guy and he's a passionate fan. He's a bit too emotional lol, but atleast he's genuine in what he claims, even if those claims are dumb founded.

The trolls like bilal and Technics are the ones that annoy everyone 24/7. Trolls for the sake of being trolls who themselves don't like getting trolling when I play uno reverse cards on them 🤣

I agree with the last bit bro

Shaheen, Naseem and Amir are superior bowlers. Bowlers who can bowl at any given time. Can get any batsman out

Gul was a fraud who bowled decent at the death. Was a terrible new ball bowler and a pathetic test match bowler

Test match yes. Not disagreements their.

Terrible new ball naw, he's genuinely dismissed people for 6 runs and 5 wickets with the new ball lol.

He's a gun bowler 100× > Shaheen. Shaheen has one good delivery, which he can't do consistently. Amir in prime could do the same unplayable delivery very consistently and consistently did it in ct 2017 as well.

Shaheen has a horrible bouncer, no line and length control and pitches it too full, gives way too much width at times and is just a very poor middle overs and death bowler in general. He needs naseem hand holding to actually get going.

Gul is superior, as I said our 2011 attack troubled the planet including atg India. Shaheen doesn't trouble anyone, besides rohit and Rahul when they were opening. But rohit has now figured shaheen out and just flicks him for a 6 if he does that inswing.

I don't think it's a concussion. Just a shoulder injury. Commentators probably misjudging and I wouldn't even be surprised. The commentary has been horrible this world cup.

Worst commentator was Sachin 😂😂. Made everyone fall asleep
Man - Sachin is an odi great but jeez his commentary is horrible. He should not be allowed anywhere near the com box. 🙂

Guys concussion is a serious issue. Due to falls or dives neck injuries can also cause damage to carotid vessels which needs to be checked by a medic. Accusing someone of faking a concussion is very serious and not a joke - the medic team evaluates completely before arriving at the diagnosis of a concussion. Accusing shabdab here is slanderous irrespective of his bowling skills. And these former cricketers who speak nonsense like this are complete illiterates who just spout nonsense for increased viewership

Sachin anytime he commentates doesn't even talk about the match. He just starts talking about old matches that took place from 1994 to 2012. 😂😂.

Tbf he isn't self absorbed as I'm he doesn't talk about himself, he talks about every great but come on bro, you're such a boring narrator and atleast follow and commentate on the current match.

The side could bazzballing to a 400 and Sachin will still say something like, I remember the 2003 cup and how dominating pointing was 🫠

That waqar sachin commentary about the 1990 sachin debut test game was so cringe . It was like you scratch my back I scratch your type of mutual.praise lol! Actually that period of commentary put me to sleep!🙂

my advice to you is dont make assumptions. My viewpoints have been shared in this thread if you did bother to read the whole thead.

the qoutes are of gul not mine and i disagree with gul

Go back to your OP. You made 2 x references regarding Umar claiming that Shadab was "faking it". Umar never actually said that nor did he claim Shadab was cheating. What he said was "it seemed like a convenient excuse". You're a native speaker so it's obviously not an issue with your interpretation. The only thing that's fake here is your fake news.

What a dumb thing to accuse him of and what in the world is wrong with these players. They all seem to be so bitter & toxic as soon as they retire and its amazing how quickly they forgot that when they used to play, it was prior players & pundit saying dumb things about them and throwing out nonsense allegations. Instead of learning from that experience, they do it to the current players so they can go through the same stuff.

Truly a shameful culture.

The same players said the same thing about marcus Trescothick
No-one there is qualified enough to conclude on whether or not shadab was concussed so there opinions don't matter

Umar Gul is one of the good guys of Pakistan cricket. He was never involved in any controversies. No fixing, no drugs, no chucking and no scandals.Never good to see him maligned like this.

Gul was 100% genuine here. He was extremely angry, there are other clips of him angry at Shadab playing with the emotions of 240M Pakistanis.

This is a serious matter. A senior journalist revealed that Shadab’s check up at Chennai hospital revealed nothing was wrong with him

Even if true (I’m 50-50 in this regard 😝), Gul should be careful before opening mouth. He is not only suggesting Shadab to be a cheat, but questioning ICC’s medical panel’s integrity as well, for that they allowed PCT a concussion sub. He can face legal notice for this …

We all know what Shadab was doing. He’s a sly, cunning individual who’s been involved in scandals himself. He’ll act pious in front of the cameras but outside the spotlight he’s something else.

If Gul had a history of being a toxic individual then I understand the criticism but as I mentioned in my previous post he was one of the few good guys who served Pakistan cricket in a dignified matter and always gave it his best. Whether it be with bat or ball in hand, he was selfless and always put the best interests of the team first. Same can’t be said for a certain ex-captain and ex-Head Coach.

He did not say cheat.

That is a HUGE difference and something some of our friends from across the border want to insinuate and you are helping their disingenuous cause.
You can play with words as much as you like, but for those who watched Gul clearly said “
Aap concussion ka bahana banatey ho, bahar baith jaatey ho…” that clearly means Gul believed Shadab faked his injury. If faking an injury to get in a substitute who the team thinks can bowl better isn’t cheating, then sure you’re free to believe whatever you want, but to me it’s clear what Gul was insinuating.

One should not attack someone just because you do not agree with his view. Umar Gul is not alone. Many people who watched the match live had the same opinion. But for some reason, this view is being censored by trying to shame people who are expressing this view, by calling them medically ignorant etc.

By the way, Gul was a fantastic bowler. The fellow who says he does not recall any memorable Gul bowling exploits despite following cricket from 2004 is clearly making an incorrect statement. People who followed cricket during the heydays of Gul know that Gul was perhaps the most dangerous wicket taker of Pakistan. In 2011 ODI world cup, he was the most successful and most feared new ball bowler. It was in the semifinal that Sehwag took him to cleaners (something only Sehwag could do) and that altered the course of the match.

I recall this vividly even 12 years later because I actually followed that world cup. Not only on TV, but some matches on the ground as well.

Our batting let us down in Mohali,

Thanks, I'm a chemist not a doctor though but body blows causing concussions is not unusual. Watch Summerslam 98 for example.

Undertaker sends Austin into the ropes and leans down (perhaps setting up a backdrop spot) but there's a miscommunication. Austin kicks him and Taker quickly snaps his head back up - which smacks Austin's jaw.

Austin was concussed. He tells the story of how he asked the ref where he was. Match still continued for another 20 mins. I guess that's instinct/muscle memory. Now if somebody watched the match without knowing that, they wouldn't notice anything unusual. I didn't until he told that story.

You can often still function. Sometimes the symptoms may not display until hours post-impact.
The term you are looking for is whiplash injury.

But concussion from whiplash injusry is a bit rare and occurs when impact is sudden/big such as in car accidents. Most concussion occur direct blow to the skull itself.

Only a medical team can make this call.

But what I found troubling is.... humanity finds its place when the person is pakistani but not when Indian. Sympathy towards fellow human being based upon nationality should be prohibited especially when preaching about humanity.

I wonder if this will cause ICC to investigate the matter, because Gul was with Pakistan Team, and with him making such an irresponsible statement can lead too ICC investigating and implementing stricter rules.

Don’t worry. The ICC only bans Sarfraz, Sharjeel, Latif, etc.

ICC cant implement bans on players for this.

They can charge the PCB and Pakistani team concerned medical/physio person on ground.

Still, i assume Shadab did had a concussion, there was no need for Gul to make such a stupid statement.

I understand that the format of PTV and Ary (har lamha parjosh) is such that sensational statements are given and enjoyed but they need to be careful. Sometimes its Hafeez giving stupid statements, sometimes they are claiming that PCB in the past misused the law where they injured a player to get someone in through ICC technicle committee.

Exactly. He never said he faked an injury 100%. He said he should fight through pain for his country In a subtle way as its a privilege privilege represetn your nation.

Whoever is posting such news please don't fabricate stories if you aren't sure.

Gul is clearly saying that questions have to be asked as Shadab ran away from the team, made up the concussion excuse.

His accusations are clear for all to see.

There is no chance its true. Not even 50/50

Our ex players time and time again demonstrate their lack of basic understanding of rules, procedures and the basic etiquettes of the game.

Gul was a fine bowler but judging by these type of rants it makes you wonder just what type of wisdom he was capable of imparting as a coach.

Doesn't ICC medical panel also check the player? For concussion though they ask a few questions and if player is feeling woozy then you just need to rest them. Not sure why Gul has to say this it is unlike him

Shadab at one point was deemed undroppable and criticised viciously by the very people who now believe that actually he dropped himself for the bowling innings.

Some seriously embarrassing and ignorant takes in this thread. Shadab was dazed for a good five minutes after the impact of his fall, him having a concussion is not surprising

The

i dont think the icc medical panel is at grounds all time. Not sure though

Cause the match referee makes the decision

Absolutely disgusting comment by Gul. Firstly, he clearly hit his head on the ground after he landed on his shoulder. Head injuries are incredibly incredibly dangerous and we should be doing our best to take extra precautions to anyone that gets a head injury. The match referee determined the validity of the concussion, he is the one appointed by the ICC to do. Or is the argument that the ICC is conspiring with our medical staff to allow Usama Mir in place of Shadab Khan? What an unbelievably stupid and senseless comment.

You can play through almost any injury - broken bones and everything. But, do not mess around with head injuries.

Also just look at how long he spent on the floor and the stiffness he was moving after he got up. Look at his eyes. You can clearly see he wasn’t all there after that fall even when he was warming up on the sideline. Thank God our medical staff stepped up and got him the care and rest he needed.

For one good delivery bowlerShaheen has done really well then, not only top at taking wickets so far but quite economical, and this despite not fully fit and bowling on graveyards.

He's been bullying minnows and c and d teams. Against top teams he's a good bowler but no where near Indian pacers atm. Shami and bumrah are far superior.

And the response that I made were umar gul, Wahab riaz, amir comparison.

Amir in prime before spot fixing would consistently bowl that unplayable inswing and at the death that awkward low short ball which were difficult to play, shaheen's inswing is all over the place, many times pitches too full and gets flicked for a 6.

Wahab riaz was trash in tours and shaheen in tours is better, but in world cups wahab always got switched on. His spells against sa including ab de devillers wicket which he took, against 2015 aus and his against atg 2011 India is something shaheen can't even dream of replicating. 2015 aus and 2011 India were ridiculously strong teams.

Gull past his prime murked South Africa lol, in his prime he was just medicore in Tests, in odi his inswing to right handers were damn near unplayable, and his bouncers and short balls were lethal.

Shaheen is not close to these guys, he's only > Wahab in bilaterals because wahab was trash in bilaterals but for some reason bowled like the 2nd coming of Joel Garner in world cups, lethal short balls consistently lol.

And naseem is > Shaheen, naseem is more economical and has taken a wicket or multiple wickets in every single game he's played besides India Asia cup match, even then he should have dismissed Gill, chacha robbed him.

There are no B C teams, it is world cup and everyone plays their best teams. Even teams like Netherland and Afghanistan have decent batting lines. And I repeat Shaheen despite not in full form or fitness has performed quite well. Naseem is more economical bowler nowadays but not a better bowler than Shaheen when Shaheen is bowling with high pace.

Some people are too harsh on Shaheen. "He just has that one inswing". I think as this World Cup progressed, he's done well adjusting his line and lengths when there was no swing on the fuller delivery, and then smartly changed his lengths in the latter stages of the game as well. Everybody, including me, would justifiably criticize him for his lack of wickets in the middle overs but he has consistently produced in the middle overs for Pak in this WC especially considering that no other bowler has looked nearly as effective. He's looked a class apart from the other pacers and despite not being fully fit, he's shown world-class temperament. The game versus South Africa is a big example. After conceding 19 runs in his first over after bowling full pies to De Kock, he dragged his length back and forced him into defensive mode, after which he lured a pull straight to the fielder at deep square leg. That was the perfect execution for a gun opener who's been pulling his opponents to smithereens. The swing wasn't there and Shaheen adjusted. Look at the figures he ended up with after conceding 19 in the first over. He was also the stand-out bowler vs Australia who were going for 400 if it wasn't for him

Yes he's generally monotone in bowling and doesn't have a huge arsenal. But to say he has "one inswing" and that's it, is blasphemous. As if "one inswing" can get you 269 wickets across formats at age 23. That too with an injury-plagued career so far.

Shaheen gets a lot of unecessary hate. Yes he could've done better with the new ball but he's one of the leading wicket-takers (joint 3rd) in the tournament.

He's not the only one who's struggled to pick up wickets during the first powerplay. The likes of Starc, Cummins, Boult and Woakes have all found it tough as well.

We should be talking about Shadab and umer gul in this thread. No need to discuss shaheen here. we have a thread available for him as well.

It was hilarious to see Shadab throwing air punches and high fives a couple of hours after suffering a “concussion”.

The first 24 hours are very important even if you are not showing any signs. You will not be exposed to any situations where you can feel heightened emotions which Shadab was with the way he was celebrating in the dressing room.

Either it wasn’t a concussion or PCB’s medical team is as mediocre and clueless as the cricketers themselves.

Shadab showing genuine happiness for Usama’s wickets is a sign of concussion IMO

The ex Pakistani players have always been quite nasty but over the course of the last couple years they have gone into overdrive. To think Gul was once bowling coach.

And you say you're a doctor...many, if not most people suffering from concussions, especially if hey are somewhat mild, can function pretty normal for quite some time. You should know there are countless athletes who carried on playing for days, weeks or even months but the damage can occur later.

If you know anything about sport you will know the concussion revolution was not JUST so someone would survive immediate after effects but also that his or her future career could be protected. Someone who has a concussion can clearly high 5 if he needs to.

What a load of nasty nonsense from people like you, especially as you claim to be a medical professional.

Shadab is a professional cricket, at least in theory. PCB has a medical team.

The fact that Shadab was allowed to sit in the dressing room let alone throw air punches and high fives just a couple of hours and after leaving the field for concussion is unbelievable negligence.

If you have a concussion, even if it’s mild, you will be under careful observation for at least 24 hours.

Either our medical team is a joke or this was staged. I’m inclined to believe the latter.

Gul is clearly saying that questions have to be asked as Shadab ran away from the team, made up the concussion excuse.

His accusations are clear for all to see.
when i saw it live, it didn't look anything that would need a substitute. I think Shadab looked at SA line up and decided he won't do all that well. He has already got a good 40, so why to spoil a good match with a poor bowling effort? took the easy way out first opportunity he got. Infact as soon as he took that option, there were lots of jokes and memes in our WhatsApp group about it being a technical injury.. it was pretty obvious to lot..

Which hospital do you work at where the following is possible "If you have a concussion, even if it’s mild, you will be under careful observation for at least 24 hours."?
I think you claim to be in the UK, I'd be curious where mild concussions in the UK constitute 24 hour observation...it's never happened in my experience.
i don't know where you are, but this is normal everywhere. My uncle was playing with his grandson and was injured very mildly when the youngster hit his head with his bat. He went to the village medical center, and they kept him until evening under observation. This is a small village with only a nurse on duty. Although he behaved perfectly normal, they only let him go when it was time to close the center late in the evening. They even called his son to come and pick him up and gave him instructions on what to observe and whom to reach out to in case of emergency. My uncle found all this hilarious as he had gone to medical center on his two wheeler :)

If someone was concussed most medical staff are asked to keep the patient under observation and assess his mental capacity periodically. They are also asked not to stress and not allowed around water, high heat etc. It is pretty routine.

Why are Pakistani players so openly nasty to each other.

This is historical and spans generations.

Another thing is appealing for bumper catches. It’s not a thing anymore with literally all teams now. Pakistani fielders are still claiming bumper catches now in the era of 50* cameras set across the ground. It’s ridiculous

I live in the UK.

And please allow @Mamoon to reply as this was a question for him.

In your village you seem to have better medical care than the UK.

Update on Shadab Khan: He isn’t available for the Bangladesh game.

Shadab Khan suffered a concussion in Pakistan’s match vs South Africa. After a thorough assessment, the medical panel had no choice but to rule him out of the match against Bangladesh.

This was Shadab’s third concussion since September last year. He had a collision with his Sussex teammate while fielding in the Vitality T20 Blast in May this year and previously during Asia Cup final last year in Dubai, when his head crashed into Asif Ali’s elbow while fielding.

Every precaution is being taken, keeping in mind his health and wellbeing. He will continue to be assessed over the coming days.

@owenhcricket

Careful observation/monitoring is a key competent of concussion treatment. When suffer from a concussion and it is verified by your healthcare practitioner, you will either be kept under observation for the first 24 hours or you will have someone looking after you to ensure that you are not engaging in any activities that would put stress on your cognition, e.g. physical activities, emotional situations which includes exposing you to situations where you can experience excitement.

This is general practice everywhere in the world let alone for a sports team that has a dedicated medical team accompanying them 24/7 and is extra cautious to ensure that their athletes do not suffer any complications.

I refuse to believe that the Pakistan medical team would be comfortable with Shadab throwing air punches and celebrating with his teammates just a couple of hours after suffering a concussion.

Shadab should have been in the dressing room on the treatment table throughout the South African innings and he should not have been allowed to mingle, let alone celebrate with the players.

Pakistan either has the most incompetent medical staff in the world or it wasn’t a concussion. I believe the latter because no medical staff can be this incompetent.

As per media reports, Shadab trained with the side today so could play vs NZ

Mickey Arthur when asked about Shadab Khan in pre game presser:

What is the latest update on Shadab (Khan)?

[Mickey Arthur:]

The latest update is Shadab went through a preliminary test today, which you've got to do as per medical protocol. He came through that OK, but we're in no position yet to make a decision on him. Concussion is a really important injury, and we've got to be 100% sure before we make a decision. No decision has been made on him at the minute.

Concussion is a really important injury, and we've got to be 100% sure before we make a decision. No decision has been made on him at the minute.
If he's not 100% he should be sent home and abrar should play in his place

Update on Shadab Khan:

He is recovering well from a concussion. He did light training yesterday however there were still some symptoms ruling him out of this match. He is likely to be available for Pakistan’s last group match against England in Kolkata.

Shadab is practicing with the team in Kolkata and looking fit, seems like he is going to get a chance to play against England.

Glad he's fit but not necessarily to be part of the team.
Not sure who he should replace. The only option is maybe is Haris Rauf if he's injured.

Fit enough to not being removed from the squad

Why make statements on live TV when you don't know the reality? Have a look at the before and after remarks from Umar Gul

------------------------------------------

Umar Gul speaking about Shadab Khan’s injury during the World Cup 2023:

“We don’t know what kind of injury he has sustained, but questions arise when you fall, claim to have a concussion, escape from the team, and go outside. The physio checks you, and then after a while, you come out. There, you chat with people and then leave. When the match gets tight, and you realize it is going in our favor, you sit outside in the dugout, cheering. It means you’ve made an excuse; you’ve saved yourself. So people will definitely question it,”

Umar Gul apologizing for the remarks he made about Shadab Khan’s injury:

"After the PSL, I approached him [Shadab] immediately because the real story was that he had suffered from concussion twice in a year, and the third time it occurred during the World Cup. The doctor advised rest to prevent any serious consequences,"

"When I found out about it and when I met him for the first time in the training camp, I went straight to him and apologized. I said, 'Shadab, it was never my intention to hurt you, and obviously being a Pakistani, I felt at that time that the team needed you.' So, for the team's requirement, I said this, otherwise Shadab is a great guy and we have good relations, our families have good relations too, but obviously I felt by the statement I had given, and I apologized to Shadab for it,"

Umar Gul is a stand-up guy and not like most of our toxic ex-cricketers. Which is why I surprised to see him make such an insensitive statement. Glad to see he has admitted his mistake and apologized. Good on him.

I guess it seems like we have now moved on from Babar / Shaheen and so bashing Gul / Shadab will be flavor of the month now..
