After being on the receiving end for almost every day of the Headingly Test, Virat Kohli could have lost his cool at this journalist. But Kohli, being the celebrity that he is, exercised self-restraint and replied: ‘Okay, thanks,’ to a question which just didn’t make any sense.

In the video clip that is doing the rounds on Twitter, a Journalist can be heard telling Kohli on how India should have played England bowlers on the back-foot, hours after the hosts had inflected an innings defeat on Kohli & Co.

“England bowlers were bowling full and, on the pads, and when there was an opportunity to go on to the backfoot India seems to be missing out on a lot of runs,” the person can be heard saying. As can be seen here, the gentleman just wasn’t able to articulate himself well; Kohli sensed that and calmly replied to end the matter there and then.

Earlier Kohli has backed under-fire wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, saying the team management will give him all the space that he needs in the remainder of the five-Test series against England.

“Well again, as I said, with one loss I cannot assess that or I cannot start analysing that as a captain. Definitely the management is not going to start analysing that because we are not failing as a team. Consistently we are not losing, this is what I mean, when I say that, we failed this game as team definitely and we take responsibility for that," Kohli said at the virtual post-match press conference when asked whether Pant’s lack of runs was creating problems for the lower middle-order.

India suffered an innings and 76 runs defeat against England in the third Test as pacer Ollie Robinson (5/65) ripped apart the visiting batting line-up in the second innings. India were bundled out for 78 in the first innings while the hosts responded with 432 courtesy skipper Joe Root’s 121.

The journalist wasn't asking a question, he was making a comment. Virat was waiting for his question, paused and then moved on. Not a big deal really.

Some journalists are making it a big deal.

It was a question.

Since the video is clipped, it looks like a comment.

Watch the full presser.

He answered the question, and then the dude made a comment to which he replied ok thanks, I don't see the problem with what he said. I also don't think Virat Kohli needs advice from a journalist on whether to play on his front foot or back foot lmao.

From this clip. I thought kohli mentally made a note of the journalist's point. He did not probably have much to say as I thought he seemed to agree to it as well but don't want to acknowledge the same.
I won't be surprised if we see some more cut shots by India in the next game.

except Gavaskar raised the same point in post match.

The journalist should have mentioned that and thrown numbers to Kohli.

Watch the presser again.

The guy asked a question about backfoot.

Kohli said how can he play that shot for pitched up deliveries.

Then the guy said he was talking about deliveries that are there.....

Kohli said thank you.

There is LITERALLY a video of this convo happening.

But yeah lets assume reporter gave gyan to Kohli and mock him.

Why let facts get in the way of a good story?

Agreed.

I felt the same too.

It was just sad that situation has come to this point where a reporter has to ask this question.

But the way its twisted in social media is crazy. Our fans & media are something else. :))

Too much arrogance in the post Dhoni years for India.

The journalist asked a legitimate question and Kohlis response was, in all honesty, plain silly. He doesn't understand how a batsman can play on the backfoot off a full delivery. Huh? Has he never seen a batsman move back and whip a full deliver off his legs?

Ridiculous.

And not the first time either.

Kohli has been arrogant in recent times. I am not specifically talking about this interview but most of his pressers are like that. He has that 'I have achieved it all...who are you journalists to ask me question' kind of attitude.

In this same press conference, he also said I dont care about outside noise. Basically he is saying he dont care about Indian cricket fans views.

He was not like this before though. He was the same guy who bowed down to Sachin Tendulkar at 2016 T20 WC in Eden Gardens. Now this version of Kohli is different guy.

Kohli has not been putting in the hard yards in training and it’s showing.

He doesn’t play practice games, takes weeks off before important series…

Kohli seems to be having technical issues like the post by Usman beautifully illustrates.

He really should have ironed out them by now but I can only guess he has been going back to these old habits some time before the England series had begun.

That’s why it’s important to have practice matches when you tour in alien conditions - you can then possibly identify any flaw before the main matches begin.

Journalist is stupid. His task is to ask question not give advise to the Indian captain. Kohli humiliated this man right.

No athlete I know of retains the same intensity forever. For me, he hasn't been the same since marriage because ask any married guy, your priorities change after marriage especially when you have a child

Okay, pretty simple to analyse this situation.

Put Rahul Dravid or Tendulkar in Kohli's place, tell me what their response would have been?
Would they say, yes we lack this aspect of the game and will try to improve that.? to a freaking journalist? Really

Looks like Personal likes and dislikes are getting in the way.

Kohli answered in actually the best way possible, there isn't a better way than this believe me.

I bet he is like this in team meetings as well. Big headed arrogant individual who is unable to look beyond himself.

I never commented on how he answered it.

In this or other threads.

I was talking about fan and media reaction.

If anything, I agreed with battler's view in this very thread.

Look above a few posts.

Kohli doesnt like outside criticism is very clear to see.

But in this case, i guess he may have just agreed with him so he just softly ended it.

Possible that he said thanks sarcastically but i would like to give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Absolutely moronic criticism.

Such kinda journalist should be banned from participating in the QA sessions.

He is acting as if he is an all knowing cricket expert who knows more cricket than Kohl’s and the entire Think Tank. He has no idea what he is talking about. “On the Blackfoot, India seems to be missing a lot of runs”. lol what an idiot.

Kohli was very cool.
If it was me, I would tell him to bat for India next time n show us how it’s done.

From the thread, I thought it was some rude remarks against a journalist.

But it was just some kind of accepting and moving on type of circumstance. What's the issue here?

Asian journalists even if they should be called one especially the ones that come from the SC are so stupid most of the times with their questions or what they say that makes you feel like punching them but you just got to hold it in and make it as if it didn't even happen.

The most basic rule in cricket is that you play full balls off the front foot and short balls off the back foot. Of course, it doesn't mean it is impossible to play full length deliveries off your backfoot. Many batsmen have indeed flicked full balls on the onside off the backfoot or even short of length deliveries for that matter off the front foot by driving on the up. It's just that doing so has a higher probability of failure and if you keep flicking full deliveries off your backfoot, you are bound to get lbw sooner or later. Similarly if you keep driving on the up off your front foot to short of length deliveries, you'll get out nicking to the keeper or the slips pretty soon.

What you're referring to is the whip off the legs deep in the crease, which is often played to a ball heading towards the legside, therefore taking the lbw out of the equation. If a batsman keeps playing that shot to balls directed straight at the stumps, you can guarantee that he'll either get bowled or lbw pretty quickly.

He has not been arrogant here. Respected the journalist view. This is all I could come to based on this video.

However, for those who are criticizing the journalist, they should know that he is just doing his job. Just like cricket is a profession, journalism is also a profession and it needs to be respected. You can't blame him by saying that he is teaching Kohli on how to play cricket because he clearly isn't.

He is teaching a profession where he is nobody.

He could have stated, "according to other cricket experts,....." and that question would have been valid then.

Its as if someone studying economics advising doctors about what to prescribe. He may be correct but he doesn't have the credentials.

He could ask the reason as any of us which could have attracted a more composed reply.

Nobody was giving anybody gyan.

If you watch the full press instead of this clipped video, you will understand.

I have mentioned it so many times in this thread but looks like we are not interested in that.

Imagine asking a question about something (backfoot).

The other guy asks how is that possible (for pitched up deliveries)?

And you answer that (for back of length deliveries).

And the whole world accuses you of giving gyan.

That's exactly what happened here.

No wonder our stars are the way they are.

I am blown away by people's ability to misinterpret things.

Even after pointing it out. :D

Not on the pads.

What should be the answer to this pointless question? Please answer this
That's not just a question, he is indirectly telling them that they aren't playing on backfoot and they should do that from the next match.
It's an advice, what answer did he expect? Did he want Kohli to say "yes, we will work on these shortcomings" and accept it in front of the media.

Bhai....

The discussion here aint about Kohlis answer but whether the journalist is giving gyan or not.

He didnt give advice by the way.

Watch the full clip.

He asked a question.

Kohli asked how is it possible?

He explained.

I must have mentioned that this clipped video is misleading so many times.

The question was 100% valid by the way.

When you dont have the backfoot shots, you get stuck in England.

Tendulkar, Dravid, Ganguly all used these strokes extensively in England.

This is one of the most brilliant questions posed by the journalist

A major reason why we are struggling.

VKs reaction was "whatever" - he controlled himself.

He is not there to listen to advice of some nobody.

Also note press conferences are there for questions to be asked - the question cannot be an advice.

Read the full conversation. That will clear all the confusion.

Journalist - Hi Virat, as you said that England had more intent with bat, so you think going forward playing more of a back foot would be part of the conversations?

Kohli - I honestly don't know what to say to that question to be honest, I mean how do you play a ball of back foot which is not on back of length?

Then journalist replied- England bowlers were bowling full and, on the pads, but when there was an opportunity to go on to the backfoot India seems to be missing out on a lot of runs".

Clearly he is explaining his first statement (which was the question) of England batsman having more intent in his second point. He is not advising Kohli of something. He is just explaining what he meant with the actual question that he asked. Then Kohli replied, "Okay, thanks!".

What else you expect of journalist to say? Should he say, "I don't know about that, you play cricket so you should know"?

If I am a journalist and I am asking a question to a cricketer but he doesn't understand my point, I gotta explain what exactly I am referring to and that is what the journalist is exactly doing. If he doesn't explain, it will actually look silly and foolish.

Moreover, it would have actually been more sensible if Kohli had responded to the journalist question but he probably knows that his batsman were not able to execute it well which is why he just said okay and thanks. I hope he has taken a note of this and his batsman executes it well in next game.

No athlete I know of retains the same intensity forever. For me, he hasn't been the same since marriage because ask any married guy, your priorities change after marriage especially when you have a child

Your priorities do change, but I don't think that's the reason for Kohli's recent wane in form. A periodic dip in form was inevitable. All great players, throughout all of history, have gone through a lean patch now and then.

Also, don't Kane and Root have children too? If anything, like James Anderson and ABD, they've only gotten better (and more committed to the team) since.

Think the journalist was not well versed with English and couldn't articulate the question well. His overall point is correct though, most Indian players are standing outside the crease to negate the swing and playing in front foot. In this process, they are missing out runs of back foot punches and dabbing the balls to third man.

Do you think that a team which is pretty much the top team in the world with best coaches money can buy will not know this?

The journalist might not have credentials but Gavaskar raised the same point in post match show

The journalist might have got that from there too.He should have mentioned Gavaskar there.

Looking at the reaction,no wonder tough questions aren't asked like Kohli not scoring a ton for 50 innings,Pujara and Rahane averaging under 30 for 3 years

Would love to see Kohli reaction to that

It was a very good question and I thought kohli handled it pretty well. This is a classic case where people need to watch the video rather than reading what he said.
To be honest when I read what he said it sounded pretty rude but when I saw the video, kohli's facial expression etc it was pretty normal.
Media being media always looks out for controversies

Get real. Hook him up with a series vs Bangladesh (same as SRT), get a ton and move on. Though VK wouldn't score a ton in a losing cause as SRT did vs Bangladesh.

PS: Aur khelo IPL. Indian batsmen only perform well in advertisements anyway.

I'm not talking about basic principles, I'm well aware. I'm talking about how the game has developed and how shots are played these days. To act as if this was a nonsensical question is pure arrogance for a man used to being molly coddled by the media.

Kohli didn’t look arrogant. In fact he could have chided the reporter or mocked the reporter or said “next question please”. That would have been arrogant. All he did was a diplomatic skipping of the question.

You may speculate about whether Kohli knows the answer to the question or not but not about the “ok thanks” comment. He was just non-committal in a polite way.
Should he be saying “We will definitely consider your comments and hope to provide you with a better experience the next time you stay with us” like a Hilton or Marriott response to customers feedback?

There is nothing wrong with a bit of arrogance if one is not rude. Arrogance comes with self belief and confidence. I always feel Kohli is only like this towards white people. Have always found him very friendly towards Pakistanis and Sri Lankans.

Agree with this. Kohli looked far from arrogant.

I also disliked the way the reporter interjected while Kohli was speaking. Not good manners!

"It ain't braggin' if you can back it up". Muhammad Ali.
