His side comes into the tournament eighth in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings, but Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed is confident of making the most of having nothing to lose in this summer’s ICC Champions Trophy.

Pakistan has yet to lift this particular trophy, but comes to England with a sense of freedom as it looks to reach a first-ever final – with excitement the main emotion heading into the tournament.

Edgbaston will first become Pakistan’s second home, playing India next Sunday, and South Africa in its opening two matches, while fellow sub-continent outfit Sri Lanka will be its last group opposition at The Oval.

And it was in Birmingham where Sarfraz stated his side’s ambitions for the tournament, confident that a care-free approach can pay dividends in a bid for a global title.

“We have nothing to lose, we just want to play our natural game,” he said at his pre-tournament press conference. “We have just played a very good series in the West Indies, where the players performed very well.

“We are very hopeful of playing well in this tournament and we want to win it. It is a very exciting time for us, there have been a lot of practice sessions at Edgbaston and we’re ready to play.

“Against the West Indies, we had a big fielding improvement, there were one or two dropped catches but it was an improvement so we are happy with that.

“We don’t see us as having a surprise element, we want to come here and play free cricket, starting against India. We are taking matches one by one and the Pakistan team is hopeful of building some confidence starting in the warm-up matches.”

Sarfraz also praised Bangladesh, with the two teams set to meet here for a warm-up match on Saturday.

Bangladesh is in its first ICC Champions Trophy since 2006 and currently sits higher than Pakistan in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings, with Sarfraz admitting he has been impressed by Bangladesh over the last 18 months.

From there, attention turns quickly to India, a team which Pakistan has a positive record against in the competition – winning two and losing just one of its previous meetings against its arch rival.

And while that game may be particularly special for the fans back home, Sarfraz is adamant his side will take its preparations one day, and one game, at a time.

“Over the past one-and-a-half years, Bangladesh has performed very well,” he said. “The warm-up game is a good opportunity for both teams before the Champions Trophy. Both teams want to win so it’s a good practice match to have.

“Over the past few years they’ve done well and we’ll see its batsmen, like Tamim Iqbal, if we play in the semi-finals.

“We have a better record against India in the Champions Trophy, not in other competitions, but we do well in this. We’re looking to maintain that against them and it’s very exciting."

Having taken over captaincy only in February, this marks the first major tournament at the helm for Sarfraz.

He boasts a positive record so far, winning three of his four matches as captain, coming from behind to secure his first series win as skipper in the West Indies.

The 30-year-old was in the middle as the winning runs were hit in the final match, and with confidence high that Pakistan can flourish in the ICC Champions Trophy, he isn’t feeling the pressure of leading his country.

Sarfraz continued: “This is my first major tournament as captain, I’m definitely very hopeful and excited about the competition.

“My aim is to play my own game, to not play under pressure and to just play as I do in domestic cricket.”

He has said enough here to annoy and delight the posters

As if he he can play someone else's game. Wish Pak players would thinking before opening their mouth making fools of themselves.

It's best if he plays his own game instead of him playing someone else game

I think it is better for him to play his own game. Others are all refusing to part with their games :)

This is the kind of captain we missed. Astute, confident, not meek or 'good boy'.

This statement represents sarfraz.

He does what he want to do. Doesnt try to copy someone elses style or try to act in a partocular way to prpve to someone.

He knows who he is and should do and say what he thinks is right.

Even in batting, when sarfraz goes out he bats his own way. Yes misbah and azhar had success in batting slow, sardraz could copy them but sarfraz knows copying them wont mean he will be successful.

Infact, sarfraz tried battinf defensivly and not naturally when he was a newbie. And we all remember that. The guy was a walking wicket.

Thus, when sarfraz now plays he plays with what he thinks is right and this is why he has had success and this is why he has been made captain.

Mind you, umar akmal are more talentes and have got better shots then sarfraz, but the problem is he started copying others. He ruined himself.
The guy had one bad patch, went in to a nutshell and never came out.

I know many might not like his statement as we are not use to it due to the past captains statement. But different personalities who think differently

I like Sarfraz, there's something about him...think he can bring the best out of this Pakistan team ..best of luck

Doesn't matter.

The Past Pak team had a decent players to beat India.

Now this team looks very weak with players who haven't adjusted to the
Modern game.

India are very strong favourites for this one - and I'm always an optimistic longtime Pak fan but I don't see much hope this time.

They're going to play an international tournament, not just a one off series with India.

We've been very defensive the past few tournaments. I really want to see a change in pace and get some aggressive, engaging tactics and strategies from Sarfaraz this time around. They really do not have anything to lose, they're in such a low position in rankings that the only place you can go from there is up.

Just imagine if Azhar was giving the presser instead of Sarfraz, Azhar would politely say 'We have a chance'

The sort of face that gives the opposition the relief to say 'this match is in the bag for us'

Sarfraz will be judged by how far he takes his team in the tournament. The match against India will be an interesting diversion but that's about it.

Pollack What did you expect him to say? "We are here to win hearts?" I think that's the right way attitude when you arrive at an event like this. No point of pu$$y footing around. Either go big or go home. Most likely go home but hey go big while doing so XD

Sarfraz is far better than Azhar but Kohli is 10 times better and technically sound captain than Dhoni. Since we have so many dead woods in our team its highly unlikely we can even fight with Kohli's India. Winning against us is just like walk in a park for India.

You don't get the banter.
Sarfaraz is a good positive bloke. He has right attitude but team also needs to have ability. When your team has Azhar ,Shehzad, Malik in this modern age Odis with flat pitches and carefree approach, need to have capability also. Amir, Hasan and wahab were all part of bowling attack taken to cleaners for 444 runs.

Exactly!!!! We don't have 1 modern day batsman but we lost him because of politics.
