Shahid Afridi in that video:

"I have yet to see anyone so hard-working than Younis Khan in Pakistan cricket"

"Younis was not talented, but he has made it by sheer hard-work"

"He had no real talent for cricket in him, he was just a normal player who improved himself with hard-work"

"I know a lot about Younis Khan's life, he had to undergo many struggles and there were issues in his family as well"

"But that guy, kept on playing and fighting it out"

"He never showed on his face or from his body language that there were troubles at home or incidents, and this is something I really appreciate"

Younis Khan was fantastic in Test. But, he was ordinary in LOI (even though he won a World T20 as a captain).

He is 3 years older than his actual age (he said it himself years ago).

His reflexes and body had slowed down after 2011. He was good enough adapt to t20is from 2006-2009. He was a much dynamic batter from 2005-2009 (his peak as an LOI). He used to be a good player of pace as well. By 2016, his reflexes had slowed down which made him look like dancing in England in 2016 test series. So there is some merit in what Afridi is saying.

Younis contributed enough as a player and as a captain in his two World Cup stints

Shahid Afridi quotes added to post#1

100% agreed with Lala. His batting looked labored but you could see he was hustling for every run. Need a lot of mental fortitude to do what he did in tests with hard work alone.

Younis had a plan against spin

And he always executed that plan

Respect

lol Although it is meant to be a complement didn't come off well. Agreed against his game against spin. He used his stretch to full extent to sweep the balls. HE also liked to show off his fitness by doing push ups on the ground.

Overall, he wasn't talented, but against spin he was super talented and was unbelievable.

What a Test player he was!

younis was an amazing test batsman, and pbly the best player of spin in his generation, and shahid is right, younis's main traits were mental strength and concentration. he had four or five go to shots, and more often than not he chose the right one.

i think its sad if anyone takes this the wrong way, success is 90% hard work, and if more people had younis as a role model Pakistan would produce better test batsmen. lets not forget he was also a very good close in fielder with 140 catches.

Anyone who watched YK on debut in 1999/200 against Sri Lanka will know that he had talent in abundance.

I don’t know if it’s been lost in translation but it’s more accurate to say he wasn’t the most talented rather that simply he wasn’t talented.

But yes he was a hard worker and should be applauded for it.

Younis Khan was not talented as you can see by his stroke play but he worked hard behind the scenes. When non talented but extremely hard working individual puts in the hard yards, then can easily triumph over the talented but lazy, non hardworking individuals.

Afridis being very praiseworthy here

Talent without hard work is nothing Younis khan was the hardest working pakistani cricketer of his generation and now a legend

Every player at intl level is talented

Some more so than others. YK was prob bottom of the scale. Pushed himself to new heights through sheer will.

He was also decent in ODI crickrt early on in his career.

In Pakistan and to some extent holds true for Indian fans as well: flamboyance and some in your face attitude is mistaken for the word “talent”.

For example Ahmed Shehzad or Umar Akmal are seen as lost talents while Azhar Ali who has 200’s and 300’s in tests are written of players with 0 talent :))

look at his innings, i havent seen anyone bat like this in Pakistan , not even babar.

Silly statement really. You need a combination of talent and hard work to succeed.

Initially Younis was a very boring and slow batsman. With time he became much more entertaining in his approach.

ON the other hand, Shahid Afridi had all the talent but lacked Hard work and persistence.
He could have achieved much more than what he achieved.
Lately he is been making to many statements.

As a Junior Player he approached Rahul Dravid. He also had a chat with Azharuddin. I think he constantly tried to improve himself as a batsman. You still need to have the talent to execute

Rahul Dravid has always shown the right path to the players.
Meanwhile, Younis Khan revealed Dravid’s generosity. “The educational shouldn’t cease. I went to Rahul Dravid in 2004 Champions Trophy in Birmingham and I requested for five minutes however Dravid himself got here to me and I used to be a junior participant. I requested him a number of questions and I took them forward and it modified my cricket,” Younis Khan said while talking to India today.

Younis definitely wasn't as talented as Yousaf, Saeed Anwar or Inzi but he worked extremely hard and maximized the output from from the skills he had. Yousaf and Inzi were much more versatile but Younis outscored them both in Tests. Younis and Inzi both played roughly the same no. of tests but Younis scored 9 more 100s. Yousaf could have achieved much more if he had taken care of his fitness levels.

Yes. He could’ve left no doubt in anyone’s mind and retired as the best allrounder of all time in LOIs, and a top 3-5 AR in tests.

Instead he’s now having to fight for the title of best spin allrounder in LOIs with Shakib Al Hasan

He had natural talent against spin but he definitely groomed the rest of his game through sheer hard work. A great example for young Pakistani batsmen of what dedication and passion can do for you.

Afridi is correct here. Keep in mind that you have to measure Younis against his peers when he made his debut. Anwar, Inzi, Yousuf were there. There was nothing in Younis at that time that would've screamed "amazing talent". He was as talented as Mohammad Wasim. Difference between the two was that Younis was gritty and was a workaholic.

And ofcourse when Afridi says that Younis wasn't talented, he doesn't mean zero talent. He just means not super talented.

Talent isn’t a substitute for hard work. Neither is work hard a substitute for talent. Both have to compliment each other.

Younus was talented. Was he immensely talented? No, but he had enough talent that complimented his hard work, which allowed him to succeed at international level.
