Once again he bubbled it.
Fitness has always been his huge worry. He was limping abit and huffing and puffing. In such a state you cannot play 2,3 big shots one after the other in finishing moments.
Had Shanaka faced 2,3 more balls game would have been over for England.
Shanaka is the new six hitting machine from Asia. Unfortunately he could not play long innings in WT20 but he definitely is future of SLC.

Mathews probably lacks motivation. He knows he is the only world class player in a hopeless team and at 28, his peak years are going to be wasted for nothing.
Feel sorry for him, seems like he has to singlehandedly carry this team at times.
Though didn't feel he used his bowling resources well enough today, should've saved himself or one of the better bowlers for an over or two at the end. Part-timers shouldn't have been on whilst Jos Buttler was getting into his groove.

This is a such an ignorant post. Cricket is a team-game but despite of that Mathews almost singlehandly took them to victory. Had anyone else taken some reponsibility they would have won the match. He has won the. Many matches before so saying he bottled it is not fair.
And the other guy you are talking about didn't win the match either.
No offence, you are a good poster, but I have noticed you back certain players no matter what and critisize others because you did not "spot" them. This is exactly what is ruining Pakistan cricket. Everyone has favourites and then they stop thinking objectively.

He's out of shape and doesn't seem motivated. Since the retirement of Mahela and Sanga, he's just been going through the gears. If he were to get himself in peak shape, he'd be the best batsman in the world. There's no one in world cricket who has more time against genuine pace. He picks the length so early it's outrageous and makes a mockery of spin when on song.
Mathews is champion material. Arguably the greatest cricketer Sri Lanka has produced in the last 15 years or so. Any team would be dying to have at least one Mathews in their team. It's an absolute shame he will never have the success that he deserves.

I doubt he could have done much about those yorkers, he had too much to get in the final over; it wasn't impossible though but stokes bowled really well and credit much be given to him. However, Matthews did well to get them to that point. Jordan was brilliant to, the England bowlers need to be given credit.

Angelo Mathews to not bowl again, to play as specialist batsman due to injuries
To eat the cake and have it
Angelo Mathews will not bowl again. To prolong his career amidst recurring leg injuries, the national cricket selectors want their best player to be a specialist batsman across all formats. This is part of a strategy cricket selectors and team management are now implementing to manage player workload and minimize burnout.
Mathews is one cricketer who has paid the price of overuse. Mathews had a dream run from 2013 to 2016, when he did not miss a single match. Statistics show he has played 339 international matches to date, since his debut in November 2008. This was despite him missing several months of cricket during the last 18-months, owing to recurring hamstring and calf injuries.
“From 2013-2016, Angelo Mathews is the player who notched the most number of games,” said Chairman of Cricket Selectors, Graeme La Brooy. “He is paying the price for that high intensity cricket without rest and recovery. When you play matches, it’s difficult to rehabilitate in-between and get back to keep going. If they had managed his workload at the time, he wouldn’t be in this situation today.”
In addition to being relieved of bowling in international cricket, Mathews’ workload in Test cricket will also be managed.
“Say, there are 3 Tests,” La Brooy said. “We do not want to play Mathews in the 3rd Test. It also depends on the intensity of the game. If he doesn’t score runs and gets out without spending sufficient time in the middle, then we will play him in the 3rd Test. But, if he gets 2 big hundreds and spends a lot of time in the middle, we will keep him out of the 3rd Test. There are a few others, including Kusal Perera, who are injury prone and need to be managed properly.”
Therefore, both Mathews and Kusal Perera will skip the first 2 matches of the 4-day Super Provincial Tournament–intended to be a competitive tournament, with only 4 teams–and will play in the 3rd and final match to prove their fitness, to travel to the Caribbean.
“We don’t want to rush him,” La Brooy continued, referring again to Mathews. “We told him to play in at least two provincial matches, to prove his fitness to go to the West Indies. We later had a longer chat with the physiotherapists and the trainers, and they said we have to give him a miss for the 2nd match. So we said fine. But he is training. So he will play the last 4-day match and the first 2 ODIs. That’s the plan for him and Kusal Perera.”
International cricket is now crowded with matches being played without a break. Caught in between are the players. How to minimise burnout is a question raised in many quarters, given the congested schedule offered to cricketers.
This situation is bound to impact adversely on a player’s physique, however strong he may be. Managing workload is now a vital duty of cricket administrators.
“We do have a system to manage player workload,” La Brooy affirmed. “But we do not have the luxury of resting players often, because of injuries to other players.”
La Brooy understands that, failing to manage the workload is akin to killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. So he has taken up the challenge to ensure players are fit at all times.
“Ideally, if we are to have a management plan, including their rehabilitation, etcetera, we need a pool of at least 30 players who could walk into the side at any given time,” he said. “A good example is Suranga Lakmal. We did not want to play him for the Nidahas Trophy T20s. But when the support bowlers broke down, we had no option but to bring him in. It was the same with Kusal Mendis. So, sometimes, we are compelled to play cricketers we planned to rest owing to injuries to other players.”
Sri Lanka’s international cricket schedule was hectic last year, allowing little time for players to rest and recover in between games. The team played 57 international matches across all formats–highest by any team–and will play at least 43 more in 2018. To make matters worse, the national cricketers were pushed into the 4-day Super 4 Provincial Tournament currently under way.
“The reason the 4-day tournament is on during this particular period is to prepare for the West Indies tour,” La Brooy said. “But, as part of managing players, we rested 11 national cricketers for the 1st match. At least 6 of them were match-fit, but we still wanted to rest them for the 1st match. Of the 11, 6 will play in the next match starting Sunday, and 3 in the last one.”
Sri Lanka’s upcoming international schedule is also heavy. Two weeks after the team returns from their West Indies tour in June, the campaign against South Africa kicks off at home. This will be followed by the Asia Cup, England’s visit to Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka’s tour of New Zealand.
The congestion could be a good thing. More matches will give players required exposure and experience to mature. But the heavy workload can also cause falling standards and fitness problems, as it has in the past.
“Our challenge is to keep the guys match-fit,” La Brooy said. “If you go back to the last 20 months or so, my predecessors were compelled to bring in new players because of injuries. They took a lot of flak for it.”
“And, if you analyse it, most of these injuries happen early or, at the end of the tour, not in the middle,” he pointed out. “That’s when the intensity of the matches increases. And, when you have not played enough cricket or, spent sufficient time in the middle (bowling 10 and 4 overs or, batting for 30-40 overs), your body doesn’t get accustomed to it. That is where you break down. This is what we have realised and are currently working with the physios and trainers to fix. Since Hathurusingha came in, he has been getting them to play a lot of cricket under match situations.”
Unlike many other countries, Sri Lanka has a limited talent pool. For instance, India rested many of their top players for the recent Nidahas Trophy tri-series in Sri Lanka, but managed to win the title against 2 star-studded teams from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
“When you are down in the dumps, you need to get at least halfway there, before we start rotating,” La Brooy said. “We could’ve done this 4 years ago, not at the moment. Our prime objective is the 2019 World Cup and we want those identified players to play at least 15 matches before the World Cup. This is why Sri Lanka Cricket spoke to Cricket South Africa and made a few changes to the schedule, so that the players will play more ODI and T20 matches than Tests, in the run-up to the World Cup.”

Angelo Mathews (114*): It was a very good wicket, so somebody had to go big and bat for long. On a placid wicket like this, first innings total is important. Bangladesh bowled well, it wasn't easy for us to go big. For the spinners the odd ball turned, but it's a good wicket to bat on, so hope it will turn on day 3 and day 4. The pitch will wear and tear, so first innings total is important. We need to get as many runs as possible, so that our spinners come into play.

The 34-year-old who has a Test best of 200* against Zimbabwe, fell one short of his second double ton to Bangladesh off-spinner Zayeem Hasan as Sri Lanka was bowled out for 397 in its first innings.
Incidentally, Mathews became the third Sri Lankan player after Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara and the 12th batter in Test history to fall on 199. He is also the only batter to be dismissed both on 99 and 199.
New Zealand's Martin Crowe is the only batter to be dismissed on 299 in Test cricket.

Could have achieved so much more if he were braver in LOIs. A player so massively talented with shots on either side of the pitch shouldn't simply have a career SR in early 80s in ODIs and under 50 in Tests.

GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) — Angelo Mathews was one of the beneficiaries of Kumar Sangakkara’s youth push in 2009, when he made his test debut at age 22 in Galle against Pakistan.
Thirteen years later, he’s set to play in his 100th test.
It’s at the same venue and against the same opposition. The second test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan starts Sunday.
In the last two years, Mathews has lost his place in white ball cricket but he’s been the leading batsman on the test team. He produced back-to-back hundreds (199 and 145) to help Sri Lanka win a test series in Bangladesh in May and he’s on the verge of 7,000 test runs.
“It would be nice to get to 10,000 test runs. Not many guys have done that and that’s something that I want to achieve,” the 35-year-old Mathews said Saturday.
“Jimmy Anderson is my inspiration,” he said of England’s record wicket-taker. “At the age of 40, he’s still delivering and he wants to do it for a couple of more years. It’s the drive that you have. This is not going to stop here and I still have few more years left. Age is just a number and I’ll work on my fitness.”
From a young age, Mathews impressed. He featured in two ICC Under-19 World Cups captaining the 2006 edition and in his first major ICC event — the 2009 T20 World Cup in England — he was the standout performer as Sri Lanka finished runner-up to Pakistan.
Not just with his batting, but some terrific fielding efforts and decent spells with the ball including three wickets in his first over in the semifinal match against the West Indies at The Oval where all three batters were bowled.
It didn’t take Mathews much time to find his feet in international cricket, becoming a regular early in his career. A seam bowling all-rounder is someone Sri Lanka had desperately searched for with little luck and the arrival of Mathews put an end to their worries.
Soon, Sri Lanka hit a purple patch. Between 2009-14, the team reached four World Cup finals and won the 2014 T20 World Cup, beating India in the final in Dhaka.
Mathews was elevated to the captaincy at the age of 25 despite the team comprising many seasoned campaigners.
Under his leadership, Sri Lanka reached new heights by winning a Twenty20 series in Australia in 2013 and beating England in their own backyard in a one-day international and test series the following year. Mathews scored a test hundred at Lord’s in his first appearance at the home of cricket and followed it up with a match-winning 160 in Leeds to back up his four-wicket haul. It was Sri Lanka’s first-ever test series win in England.
Mathews also was Sri Lanka’s captain when they swept Australia 3-0 in a test series in 2016. Soon after, he was hit by injuries. A series of hamstring, ankle and quadriceps injuries saw him frequently sidelined. He stepped down from the captaincy in 2017 and as a result of injuries concentrated on batting alone.
Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne said he’s known Mathews since 2003 “when we were schoolboys at St. Joseph’s.”
“Something that always inspired me was his passion for the game. He’s been always a quick learner and has so much to offer,” Karunaratne said. “Hopefully we can make this a memorable game for him.”

England star Ben Stokes this week sparked a debate on cricket's packed calendar and player exhaustion after he quit one-day internationals on Tuesday.
But when asked about Stokes' decision, the 35-year-old Mathews said he still had a lot of cricket left in him in all three formats.
"My inspiration is Jimmy Anderson. At 40 being a fast bowler he still wants to play a couple of more years," Mathews told reporters -- although the England star only turns 40 next week.
"See it's the drive that you have towards the game. It's not going to stop here. I still have a few more years."
While Mathews acknowledged that cricket had "taken a toll on my body" in recent years, he said he would work on his fitness and form.
"Age is just a number and I am still willing to give it my best in all three formats."
Anderson, who gave up the white-ball formats to concentrate on Tests, has claimed 657 wickets in 172 five-day matches since making his debut in 2003.
Mathews, a middle-order batsman and a medium-pace bowler -- although he now seldom bowls due to injuries -- has scored 6,876 runs in 99 Tests since his 2009 debut against Pakistan in Galle.
"I haven't given up bowling in T20s and ODIs. But when you play Test cricket in the subcontinent, my type of bowling will not suit the team that much," he said.
The second Pakistan Test will be Sri Lanka's last this season before the team travels to New Zealand in March next year for two five-day games.
Mathews urged Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to include more red-ball matches in the team's itinerary.
"I prefer Test cricket. We like if there are many more Test matches because most of the leading players want to play more Test cricket," said Mathews, who called the Test win under his captaincy at Headingley in 2014 one of his career highlights.
"But, unfortunately, I think we have about seven Test matches for next 18 months or so. We hope SLC would make arrangements to include few more Test matches."
Captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who played cricket with Mathews at the same school, said a win in Galle to level the series would be an ideal gift for the veteran.
"Like for Angelo, even for us it's a great occasion. It's not an easy thing to play 100 Test matches," said Karunaratne.
"So trying to make it memorable. When we win there is lot of joy and that's what we want to do in this game."

During Abu Dhabi T10, in a crucial match for the Northern Warriors, Mathews showcased his skills in a dramatic fashion. Although he was dismissed for a duck, he had a significant impact with the ball in the final over. With 19 runs to defend, Mathews delivered under pressure by dismissing the Samp Army captain, Moeen Ali, for 37 runs and subsequently took down the tail-enders, achieving a last-over hat-trick. This shows one thing that an old medium pacer like Matthews is much better than a fast young pacer like prasidh. Both had almost same runs to defend in the last over whereas prasidh bottled it, Matthews delivered. Certainly, there is no substitute for experience.

Angelo Mathews made 112 runs in the first two T20I and took 2/15 in the third T20I and series decider and thus for this spectacular performances, he has been declared as the Player of the Series.

As per reports, veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder, Angelo Mathews is set to retire from white-ball cricket at the end of the upcoming T20 World Cup which is set to be played in the United States of America and the Caribbean from June 2.
It is being reported that after his retirement from the white-ball formats, the ex-all-format skipper is expected to migrate from the island country to down the south in Australia where he has also been said to have bought a few houses in Melbourne.
