Australia’s National Men’s Team will arrive in Sri Lanka to play an all format cricket series during June – July 2022.

The Australians will play 03 T20Is, 05 ODIs, and 02 Test Matches during the tour.

The tour starts with the T20I series and will be followed by the ODI and the Test Series, respectively.

The games will be played in Colombo, Kandy, and Galle.

“We are in for some exciting cricket, especially considering that an Australian tour to Sri Lanka is
taking place after 5 years, since last time they toured Sri Lanka,’’ said Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri
Lanka Cricket.

“The T20 Series will help our preparations for the T20i World Cup, whilst the Test and ODI segments
are also competitions of immense value for us, as we aim to move through the ICC World Test
Championship rankings and also gearing up for the ICC Men’s World Cup in 2023,’’ further added De
Silva.

Oh wow a 5 match ODI series finally.

And two tests at Galle. Aussie batters will be properly tested against some quality SL spinners on turners. Should be an interest series.

SL will do India and Pakistan a favour by beating Australia in this test series, 2-0.

This series will be Australia's biggest test in Asia since the 2017 India series. Unlike Pakistan, Sri Lanka will actually dish out spin-friendly wickets that Australian batters will find tough to bat on. The kind of wickets on which Sri Lanka oftentimes need only one seamer, and the kind of wickets on which Karunaratne buries the opposition bowlers into the Galle dust.

Should be an interesting series.

Men’s Chair of National Selectors George Bailey said: “There are a several players returning to respective squads combined with an Australia A tour running in parallel to the white ball series.

“It’s incredibly exciting to have an Australia A component which offers the further flexibility and opportunity for players to be available for and cross over into all squads. That could be from a Test or white ball preparation perspective or an opportunity to impress at an international level.

“Those factors coupled with what we expect to be more freedom of travel means we can be very specific with our structures while continuing to develop the next generation of players.

“This is the first time a tour of this scale has been possible since the Ashes in 2019.”

Bailey said a focus of the first part of the tour would be on the upcoming defence of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup at home and an extended one-day Series with a view to the ODI World Cup in India next year.

“These are very targeted to skill sets and what we see as the bulk of the squad for the home T20 World Cup and looking further forward to the ODI World Cup,” he said.

“We were able to continue to build our depth with great white ball performances in Pakistan on the back of a superb Test Series. As selectors this has been one of the most rewarding parts amid the challenges of the past few years.”

Adam Zampa will miss the tour for the birth of his first child while Test captain Pat Cummins will sit out the T20 matches in preparation for the ODI and Test Series.

Newly-appointed Australia coach Andrew McDonald has left the door ajar for star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell to make a stunning return to Test cricket during the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Maxwell was last week named in the white ball squad for the month-long tour of Sri Lanka, but narrowly missed out on making the cut on returning to the fold for the five-day format of the game.

The limited overs specialist has only played seven Tests during his illustrious career and the most recent of those was back in 2017 when he made 38 and 25* against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

But McDonald is well aware of Maxwell's prowess with bat and ball, having played alongside the right-hander for Victoria last decade and then coached the 33-year-old later in his career.

The Australia coach also knows how well Maxwell can perform on the sub-continent and pointed to his stunning Test century against India in Ranchi when asked about the chances of the veteran winning a recall.

"It is always a contemplation (to include Maxwell) and I think with 32 players being there (in Sri Lanka) at the one point in time all options are still open," McDonald said on Melbourne radio station SEN on Tuesday.

"So you never know with what is going to happen.

"He has got a great record in the sub-continent, and in India in particular with that hundred in Ranchi and he can also give us off-spin."
y loyal to the squad that performed so well and clinched the narrow 1-0 series triumph against Pakistan away from home in March.

"There was a small discussion about what it (including Maxwell) potentially looked like, but (we felt we needed to) reward the team that went to Pakistan and how that squad went about its work,” he said.

"It was always going to be very difficult to change."

Both Nathan Lyon and Jon Holland were utilised as front-line spinners the last time Australia played Test cricket in Sri Lanka and spin is once again expected to feature heavily during the two Tests in Galle that start at the end of June.

Leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson and left-armer Ashton Agar were both named alongside the experienced Lyon in the 16-player Test squad, while part-timers Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith are likely to be called upon to contribute with the ball at times.

Maxwell and McDonald during their days with VictoriaMaxwell and McDonald during their days with Victoria
Using Maxwell as a different third spin option is one prospect that Australia may also look at, with McDonald indicating it would be unlikely that three specialist spinners would all be selected in the one side.

"Mitchell Starc has a magnificent record in the sub-continent and in particular in Sri Lanka and on the last tour there he was the leading wicket taker (for Australia),” McDonald noted.

"You are going to be a brave man to leave out the captain (Pat Cummins) or Mitch Starc to fit in a third spinner.

"But (the option) is always there and you pick three spinners in your squad for that reason.

"I think what we have done is given ourselves the options through the squads we have picked."

Australia's squad have raised ethical concerns about their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka with the island nation in the midst of an economic crisis but will back a decision to go ahead with the visit, Australian Cricketers Association chief Todd Greenberg said.

Sri Lanka is reeling under its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948, with a severe shortage of foreign exchange severely curtailing imports, including essentials such as fuel and medicines.

Demonstrations have roiled the country since late March, and violence broke out two weeks ago after clashes between government supporters and protesters in Colombo sparked further incidents across the country that left nine people dead and about 300 injured.

"The players are very aware of the situation in Sri Lanka," Greenberg told the Australian Associated Press on Wednesday.

"It's fair to say there is a level of discomfort around touring in conditions that contrast those faced by the people of Sri Lanka, such as rising food prices, power cuts and fuel rationing.

"Ultimately our players want to continue to play cricket and will take direction, guidance and advice from CA about tour arrangements and planning."

Australia have announced three strong squads for the seven-week tour in June and July, which includes a Twenty20 series, five one-day internationals as well as two tests in Galle.

Australian players will head to Sri Lanka aware of the situation in the island nation but committed to travelling, with Test keeper Alex Carey revealing they had been in multiple meetings about the situation and he was confident in the security measures in place.

Carey is among the early travelling party preparing for six white-ball games, with the first T20 in Colombo on June 7, before the first of two Tests begins in Galle on June 29.

Amid ongoing turmoil in Sri Lanka, with the country short of fuel and medicines and struggling with rolling power cuts, Australia’s three Twenty20 and five one-day matches have already been moved to day games.

Australian Cricketers’ Association chief executive Todd Greenberg also recent admitted that players felt “a level of discomfort” about touring Sri Lanka in the current circumstances.

Carey will be among a group of players who will spend as much as six weeks navigating the issues in Sri Lanka but said he didn’t feel any concern about touring.

Instead, he hoped that international cricket could put “a bit of a smile” on the cricket-mad local faces.

“We’ve had a number of meetings leading in to the tour with full clarity of what’s going on,” Carey said on Monday.

“Once we hit the ground we will see with our own eyes. Personally, I don’t feel there is a concern to tour.

“We are always well looked after by CA, security, the information we are given, so it’s exciting to hopefully put a bit of a smile on the Sri Lankan faces.

“They are doing it tough from reports but hopefully some cricket will turn that around for them.”

Spinner Mitch Swepson, who, like Carey, toured Pakistan earlier this year without issue despite security concerns as Australia returned there for the first time since 1998, said he was well aware of the situation in Sri Lanka.

But he too was comfortable with security arrangements.

“We’ve heard about some stuff that’s been going on over there politically, but same as what was going on with Pakistan, we’ve had our security team briefing us pretty much weekly on what’s going on and keeping us up to date,” Swepson said.

“They’ve assured us that we’ll be safe over there and we’re just looking forward to the cricket really.”

Australia last toured Sri Lanka in 2016 and will play limited overs matches in Colombo and Kandy before playing two Test matches in Galle.

Australia have suffered a setback ahead of their tour of their tour of Sri Lanka this month.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald will miss the start of his side's tour of Sri Lanka after he picked up Covid-19 on Tuesday.

McDonald tested positive to the virus on Tuesday afternoon and will not be able to fly to Sri Lanka with the remainder of the team this week as he remains in isolation in Melbourne for a seven-day period.

It means assistant coach Michael Di Venuto will take the reins for the opening T20I of the series on June 7 in Colombo, with McDonald set to join the remainder of the team ahead of the second match of the series at the same venue on June 8.

Australia have already announced a new-look coaching setup for the series, with Kiwi great Daniel Vettori and highly-rated cricketing brain Andre Borovec announced as full-time assistants under McDonald ahead of the Sri Lanka tour.

"I have worked with Daniel previously and could not speak more highly of his approach, work ethic and rapport he brings," McDonald said last week.

"His experience and balanced style are well documented. He is a great fit and will bring an enormous amount of knowledge to the team.

"Andre has been fantastic for the group when he has been involved as an extremely skilled and experienced high performance coach.

"He is a great fit culturally and brings the skills to complement our high-performance specialists."

The duo will take up their roles ahead of the Test series that commences on June 29, with Di Venuto to be helped out by former Test seamer Clint McKay and spin coach Sri Sriram for the white-ball portions of the series.

Andrew McDonald will miss the first game of Australia’s multi-format tour to Sri Lanka after testing positive to Covid-19.

The match between Sri Lanka and Australia in Colombo on June 7 was supposed to be McDonald’s first since his appointment to the head coaching role full-time, but instead he’ll watch from isolation as assistant Michael Di Venuto takes the reins.

McDonald is set to join the team in Colombo ahead of the second T20 on June 8.

A Cricket Australia spokesperson told News Corp that McDonald was asymptomatic as he began his isolation period in Melbourne.

The Aussies are spending more than a month touring Sri Lanka, where they’ll face the locals in three T20Is, five ODIs and two Test matches.

Led by captain Pat Cummins, Australia will assemble in Colombo on Thursday.

The tour will be McDonald’s second in charge; after Justin Langer resigned as head coach in early February, Cricket Australia appointed his former assistant, McDonald, to the role on an interim basis.

As caretaker coach, McDonald oversaw victory in a home T20I series against Sri Lanka, as well as on Australia’s first tour to Pakistan this century.

The 1-0 Test series win against Pakistan was Australia’s first on the subcontinent since 2011.

Having passed the audition with flying colours, McDoanld signed a four-year contract in April and became Australia’s full-time head coach.

“The journey so far has been particularly pleasing, and I am honoured to be given this incredible opportunity for what is an exciting period ahead,” he said at the time.

Last Tuesday, Cricket Australia announced it had hired two new assistant coaches who would begin working with the Australian team from the tour of Sri Lanka.

Andre Borovec and Daniel Vettori will work with McDonald from the Test portion of the tour onwards.

The pair replaces outgoing assistants Jeff Vaughan, who is returning to his post as Tasmanian head coach, and McDonald himself.

Sri Sriram and Clint McKay will work alongside McDonald and Di Venuto as assistants for the white ball legs of the tour.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lankan fast bowling legend and former captain of the ODI and T20I team, as the ‘Bowling Strategy Coach’ of the National Team for the white ball segment of the Australia Tour of Sri Lanka.

Malinga, during the tour, will support Sri Lanka’s bowlers, providing tactical insight and technical expertise to help the on-field execution of strategic plans.

Sri Lanka Cricket is confident that Malinga’s vast experience and renowned death-bowling expertise, especially in the T20 format, will help the team immensely going into this all-important series.

Lasith Malinga held the same role with the national team when the team toured Australia in February this year for a white ball series.

Australia limited-overs captain Aaron Finch hopes his team can bring some joy to cricket fans in Sri Lanka amid the island nation's worst financial crisis in over seven decades, the 35-year-old said on Friday.

Australia cricketers had voiced some ethical concerns about the situation in Sri Lanka, where demonstrations have roiled the country since late March, but they arrived on Wednesday for eight limited-overs matches and two tests over the next six weeks.

"We are here to play cricket. Hopefully, we can bring some joy, some entertainment to Sri Lanka ... This is the first time we're here since 2016, which is such a long gap," he said.

"It's such a special place to tour. The hospitality that you get here, the friendliness, and their love for the game is unbelievable."

The protests and frequent power cuts as a result of the economic crisis has led to some questions over day-night games.

Asked if they were confident about those games, Finch said: "It's well and truly above my pay grade. But all that stuff was ticked off between the two boards and the governments before the tour went ahead.

"Whether they shift the games to day games, I'm not sure what's going to happen ... but over the last week or so, I haven't heard any complaints (from team mates)."

Australia begin its tour on Tuesday with the first of three Twenty20 matches against a Sri Lanka team ranked ninth in this format.

Finch, who led Australia to its maiden T20 World Cup title last year, ruled out any complacency against a home side containing batter Kusal Mendis and spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.

"We had a couple of close series against them ... they are a very dangerous side," Finch said.

"If you just look at the top order, you've got Kusal there who can be as damaging as anyone on his day and obviously Hasaranga has had an unbelievable couple of years in T20 cricket."

Australia have named a strong XI for the opening game of their T20 series against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Tuesday.

With Test skipper Pat Cummins and first-choice spinner Adam Zampa the only notable absentees from the squad, Australia will take a near full strength side into the opening match.

Left-armer Ashton Agar will be given the chance to deputise for Zampa, while Kane Richardson has beaten out fellow quicks Sean Abbott and Jhye Richardson for Cummins' vacant spot.

Skipper Aaron Finch will open the batting alongside left-hander David Warner, while Mitch Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and Marcus Stonis will make up a strong top six for the reigning ICC T20 World Cup champions.

Veteran Matthew Wade will keep wickets and bat at No.7, with experienced duo Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood making up the remainder of the bowling unit.

Sri Lanka vs Australia | 1st T20I | Colombo | 7 June, 2022 | Match Discussion

Both sides will have one eye on the ICC Men's T20 World Cup later this year when they meet for the three-match T20I series in Colombo and Galle.

The first two matches will be played in the Sri Lankan capital on 7 and 8 June, with the series then moving to Galle for the third and final match on 11 June.

The two teams will be relatively familiar with each other having played a five-match series on Australian soil at the start of the year and that series showed there is little between the two sides.

While Australia claimed the series 4-1 on that occasion, all matches were closely-fought and another tight series is expected this time around.

Hosts Sri Lanka will be hoping to get big performances from star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga after he took 26 wickets at the recent IPL, while the likes of Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and skipper Dasun Shanaka will be relied upon to provide the bulk of the runs.

Many eyes will be on Australia captain Aaron Finch, just to see if he can find some of his best form prior to his side's T20 World Cup defence on home soil later this year.

Finch struggled during the IPL and will be hoping a reunion with fellow veteran David Warner at the top of the Australian batting order will help him regain his touch.

All-rounder Mitch Marsh will continue to bat at number three for Australia, with Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis to make up the remainder of the batting order.

Experienced spinner Adam Zampa will miss the tour as he remains in Australia for the birth of his child. In his absence, left-armer Ashton Agar will lead Australia's spin department with some help from the likes of Mitchell Swepson and Maxwell.

Remember the last time

Kusal Mendis was the hero as Sri Lanka successfully chased down Australia's total of 154/6 with one ball remaining at the MCG in February this year.

Mendis finished unbeaten on 69 on that occasion, with the opener receiving ample support with the bat from skipper Dasun Shanaka (35) and Charith Asalanka (20) as Sri Lanka clinched their only victory in the five-game series.

The 4-1 series scoreline was not a true reflection of how close the series was, with Australia also clinching a Super Over victory in the second game of the series at the SCG.

What they said

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka: "Since we have a good bowling attack, we need the batters to fire and, if they can, I think we can win the series. We played on good sporting wickets in Australia and, even though we lost the series, we gave a good fight."

Australia captain Aaron Finch: "We feel as though that that's a really balanced side for T20 cricket, because we've still got seven genuine batters with (wicketkeeper) Matty Wade at seven. We saw the importance of that (allrounder) role throughout the World Cup … when the conditions suit, (Glenn) Maxwell's as good as a frontline spinner (and) Mitch Marsh and Marcus Stoinis' bowling is very underrated in T20 cricket as well."

Squads:

Sri Lanka: Dasun Shanaka (c), Pathum Nissanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Nuwanidu Fernando, Lahiru Madushanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Kasun Rajitha, Nuwan Thushara, Matheesha Pathirana, Ramesh Mendis, Maheesh Theekshana, Praveen Jayawickrama, Lakshan Sandakan.

Easy win coming for Aus. SL outclassed.

A devastating three-wicket over from Josh Hazlewood paved the way for Australia’s openers to cruise to a 10-wicket tour-opening victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Hazlewood’s emergence as one of the game’s premier T20 bowlers was once again on display, taking 4-15 as he silenced a full house at the R.Premadasa Stadium as Sri Lanka crumbled in a major anti-climax to Tuesday evening’s highly-anticipated clash.

David Warner, playing in his first T20 International since last year’s World Cup where he was player-of-the-tournament, was dominant while Aaron Finch (61no) profited from an early review after being given out before scoring.

The Australia captain hit four sixes, including one jaw-dropping blow off Dushmantha Chameera over long-off, while Warner scored even faster as he found the fence xx times.

Following a lengthy second-innings rain delay, the tourists reached the modest victory target of 128 with six overs to spare.

Trumpets had blared and drums were beaten by a crowd adorned in navy blue waving the national yellow and red flag as Pathum Nissanka (36 off 31) and Charith Asalanka (38 off 34) played a series of exquisite strokes.

Their 61-run partnership that had the ground rocking and Sri Lanka eyeing off a large total.

But Hazlewood spoiled the party in a spell of 4-16 as the hosts, from a strong position at 1-100 in the 12th over, fell in a heap to lose their last nine wickets for 28.

Mitchell Starc snared 3-26 and troubled the Lankans for pace after a bizarre opening-over mishap where the left-arm quick sliced open his index finger on the seam of the ball and required brief medical treatment.

Having earlier removed free-wheeling opener Danushka Gunathilaka (26 off 15), Hazlewood scythed through the middle order by having Kusal Mendis (1) skying a catch, Bhanuka Rajapaksa (golden duck) caught behind and captain Dasun Shanaka (second-ball duck) lbw in the space of six balls.

The paceman now has 12 wickets at 8.91, with an economy rate of 5.35, from five T20s against Sri Lanka this year.

Finch, who has admitted to battling technical issues as he attempts to fix his balance at the crease, was given out lbw in familiar circumstances off crafty spinner Maheesh Theekshana’s third ball of the Australian innings.

But DRS saved him and the right-hander was tactically astute in targeting Sri Lanka’s best two bowlers in Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga, whose first over he helped take 19 off.

Warner, who offered a straightforward chance to Nissanka on 55 that burst through the fielder’s fingers, then took control in an otherwise unrelenting onslaught that saw him reach fifty from 33 balls.

Finch reached the milestone, his second consecutive T20I fifty after a match-winning hand in a one-off clash with Pakistan in April, from 37 balls, then opened the shoulders with a four and six to seal the win.

The match was a sell-out, and played under lights at night despite the island-nation’s crippling economic crisis that has seen inflation rise to record levels, queues for petrol stretch for kilometres as the country faces shortages of fuel and power.

Sent in by Finch, Sri Lanka got off to a fast start as Gunathilaka played a pair of daring scoops off the Aussie quicks before being caught at deep third man by Mitch Marsh, who nearly ran under the high catch.

It was a brisk stand that followed as Nissanka, the only shining light from Sri Lanka’s top-order on their tour of Australia earlier this year, and Asalanka delighted the home fans.

Asalanka smashed Kane Richardson’s second ball for a bullet six that hit the ground’s huge scoreboard and rolled back onto the field as the pair brought up the 100 inside 12 overs.

But a pinpoint Starc yorker bowled Nissanka to open the door for Hazlewood’s blitz.

Asalanka and Chamika Karunaratne deepened the home side’s woes as the pair were needlessly run out either side of a brief rain interval, the latter thanks to a direct hit from Steve Smith to make up for an earlier dropped catch, off Nissanka on 22.

Warner also took a sharp running catch to finish the innings in an impressive Aussie fielding display.

Mitchell Starc is set to sit out Australia's second T20I against Sri Lanka after sustaining a rather bizarre injury during the first match. Starc managed to bowl through his quota of overs despite the injury in the first match, recording figures of 3/26. The match is scheduled to take place in Colombo on Wednesday evening.

Starc sustained the injury in the opening over of the match. Play paused after the last ball of the over was bowled with Starc in discomfort and needing treatment. It was later revealed by cricket.com.au that the 32-year-old had slit the index finger of his bowling hand on his own shoe spike during the opening over.

He was allowed tape on his finger last night as the injury occurred during the match but the same can't be said for the second match.

Australia went on to win the first match by 10 wickets. Starc's three-wicket haul and Josh Hazlewood's 4/16 helped them dismiss Sri Lanka for 128 runs. Captain Aaron Finch and opening partner David Warner then scored unbeaten half centuries to ensure that the reigning T20 World Cup champions win the match without losing a wicket.

"It was a strange one," said Hazlewood, who won the player of the match award, after the game about Starc's injury. "Once his left leg came back through, he clipped it on the spike, so he's got a little cut on his bowling finger. He was allowed to strap it tonight being an external blow in this game (but) can't strap it (Wednesday) night so that might cause a few problems."

Australia have survived an electric spell from allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga to edge Sri Lanka by three wickets and wrap up their three-match Twenty20 series.

Veteran wicketkeeper Matthew Wade (26*) handled the immense pressure of batting with the tail to secure victory with 13 balls to spare in Colombo on Wednesday night as the visitors took an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Chasing the hosts' mediocre total of 9-124, openers Aaron Finch and David Warner came out intent on powering Australia to victory as quickly as possible.

Only a night earlier, the same pair blasted Australia to a 10-wicket win when they passed Sri Lanka's score of 128 with six overs to spare.

But the Lions showed far more fight in the second match as Hasaranga weaved some magic with Australia collapsing to 7-99.

The leg-spinner took figures of 4-33, and almost secured a hat-trick after removing Glenn Maxwell and Ashton Agar in consecutive balls.

But Wade was able to steady the innings as he received solid support from fast bowler Jhye Richardson to help give Australia an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

With star quick Mitchell Starc sidelined for Wednesday's match after suffering a finger injury, Maxwell was given the new ball and struck in the first over after Finch won the toss and elected to bowl.

The Lions stumbled to 2-7 before Charith Asalanka (39) and Kusal Mendis (36) steadied the innings with a 66-run stand.

But Maxwell ended the partnership in the 12th over with Asalanka skying a ball to Finch.

Mendis' knock ended in bizarre fashion, departing after falling back into his stumps after being hit in the helmet by a delivery from Jhye Richardson.

The Western Australian paceman, who has played just two international games since he was dropped after taking five wickets in the second Ashes Test win last December, came into the team for Starc.

Richardson finished with career-best T20I figures of 3-26, while Josh Hazlewood (0-16) was treated with extreme caution by Sri Lanka's batters after his player-of-the-match performance of 4-16 in game one.

Kane Richardson also had a career-best night with the ball, walking off the ground with figures of 4-30 after taking three wickets in the final over.

Sri Lanka have been fined 40 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against Australia in the second T20I in Colombo.
Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Dasun Shanaka’s side was ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Shanaka pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Prageeth Rambukwella, third umpire Lyndon Hannibal and fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge leveled the charge.

Dasun Shanaka's magnificent knock of 54* off just 25 balls helped Sri Lanka to a four-wicket win in the final over of the third T20I. Australia take the series 2-1.

With the series in the bag with two wins, Australia opted to bat after winning their third toss in a row.

Both teams rung in a change each – Praveen Jayawickrama replaced Nuwan Thushara for Sri Lanka while Josh Inglis made the XI in place of Mitchell Marsh, who was out with a minor calf strain.

David Warner was slow to get off the blocks for Australia but Aaron Finch made up for his partner's slow start. He welcomed Dushmantha Chameera into the bowling with two fours in his first over and dished out the same treatment to Maheesh Theekshana in his next.

The change of ends didn't help Chameera, though it did with Theekshana. Finch and Warner accumulated a boundary each in the penultimate over of the Powerplay but the spinner broke through for his side, ending the Aussie skipper's entertaining knock of 29 from 20 balls.

Maxwell sent the ball into the stands off his second ball while Warner broke loose after the end of fielding restrictions. The three overs after the Powerplay fetched 33 runs.

It looked like Australia were going to set a massive total for Sri Lanka to chase down but the hosts were not going down without a fight. Wanindu Hasaranga got the big wicket of Maxwell, who picked the googly but failed to gain the elevation for a maximum.

Off the very next ball, DRS came to Sri Lanka's rescue as Theekshana trapped Warner in front of the stumps for 39. Inglis, who was drafted into the XI for the game, was run-out for a first-ball duck, making it three wickets in three balls for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka tightened the screws in the middle overs, with overs 9-15 accounting for three wickets while giving away only one boundary.

Marcus Stoinis took on Praveen Jayawickrama with a six and two boundaries but the spinner had the last laugh off the final ball of the over.

Despite a flurry of wickets that fell in the middle, Australia set Sri Lanka a challenging target of 177, thanks to Steve Smith's 27-ball 37* and a couple of boundaries from Matthew Wade in the death.

Sri Lanka started with a bang, getting 11 runs off the first over. They kept the scorecard ticking with Danushka Gunathilaka getting in some good shots. The opening partnership of 25 was broken at the beginning of the fourth over with Josh Hazlewood removing Gunathilaka for 15.

Charith Asalanka kept up the scoring rate and along with Pathum Nissanka helped bring up Sri Lanka's fifty with a four on the first ball of the seventh over. His resistance ended when Stoinis got him for 26, breaking the fledgling 42-run stand.

At the halfway mark, Sri Lanka needed 100 more to win.

Stoinis got Nissanka in the 11th over and Bhanuka Rajapaksa fell to Ashton Agar two overs later. Hazlewood got Kusal Mendis in the over after that and Jhye Richardson brought the end to Hasaranga's patchy innings as Sri Lanka slipped to 108/6 in the 16th over.

Shanaka blinder turns the game on its head

A true captain's knock from Dasun Shanaka completely outfoxed the opposition bowlers as Sri Lanka registered a final-over victory in the the third T20I.

With 59 needed in the final three overs, the hosts had a tough ask ahead of themselves. But Shanaka, refusing to give up, put up a brilliant display of batting, taking the Australia bowlers to the cleaners. After Chamika Karunaratne gave Shanaka the strike with a single off Hazlewood, the Lanka captain smashed two sixes and two fours in quick succession to the cheers of the crowd.

The equation read 37 in 12 balls and Shanaka this time pounced on Jhye Richardson to slam more runs. A six and two fours came in the penultimate over to leave Sri Lanka 19 off the final one to make it home.

Kane Richardson started the last over nervously with two wides, a couple of singles later and with 15 needed off four, Shanka hit back to back fours and a six to ease off the pressure, bringing up a superb fifty and ultimately leading the hosts to an exhilarating win.

Australia, however, took the series 2-1.

Reinforcements for a depleted bowling attack, which received what Australia conceded was a "reality check" on Saturday evening, have arrived for the ODIs following a third injury in the space of a week.

After missing the third T20I defeat with a calf strain, Mitch Marsh will also miss at least the first two ODIs of a series consisting of five matches in 11 days, beginning in Kandy on Tuesday.

Marsh joins Mitchell Starc, whose sliced finger will also see him return during the back end of the ODIs at the earliest, and Sean Abbott, who has gone home with a broken finger, as casualties during the opening stages of the all-format tour.

Boosting the pace bowling stocks for the 50-over games are Test captain Pat Cummins and allrounder Cameron Green, while Marnus Labuschagne is the other addition from outside the T20 squad.

The trio will train in Kandy on Monday morning, but Travis Head has remained with the Australia A squad ahead of their four-day games in Hambantota.

Jhye and Kane Richardson, who were both expensive in Sri Lanka’s remarkable victory at the Pallekele Stadium, have also been kept on after neither were initially selected for the one-dayers.

Australia’s overall bowling depth is being tested given lead bowler Adam Zampa is absent due to the birth of his first child.

It could open the door for Mitchell Swepson, who made his ODI debut in Pakistan earlier this year, to play alongside fellow spinner Ashton Agar.

"We’re missing a couple of Mitches there but I think Pat will come back in," Josh Hazlewood, speaking about the T20Is, told cricket.com.au. "We’ll have a look at the wicket, maybe (bring in) another spinner, who knows."

Australia were measured in their reaction to Dasun Shanaka’s almost singlehanded effort to score the 59 runs Sri Lanka required from the final three overs of the third T20I.

The pace trio of Hazlewood, Jhye and Kane Richardson all came in for punishment during the extraordinary onslaught that revived a run chase that had appeared completely out of reach.

"From Shanaka it was some great hitting," said Hazlewood after the 2-1 series win. "We nailed a few balls and they went to the boundary, and we bowled a few change-ups and they weren’t quite right either.

"Everything just seemed to hit the middle of the bat there at the end.

"Everyone’s calm out there. You play the over back in your head and you’d change a few things … there are no major concerns, maybe just a bit of a reality check."

Marcus Stoinis admitted the Aussies may have thought the game was won.

"Maybe we got a little bit ahead of the game and ahead of ourselves there for a second," said Stoinis. "But (17) overs went really well and that’s what happens in T20 cricket.

"Someone plays one of the best innings they’ll play for their career, and hats off."

On the vociferous Pallekele crowd that had chanted ‘Aussies, Aussies’ as they posed for photos with the series silverware, Stoinis added: "It was a brilliant atmosphere.

"I hate losing and I think I speak for everyone in the (dressing) room when I say that we hate losing.

"But that was a brilliant innings, it was great for the crowd, the crowd was nuts and it is good for Sri Lankan cricket as well."

Australia have suffered yet another injury to a fast bowler in their Sri Lankan campaign with Kane Richardson flying home with a serious hamstring injury.

Mitchell Swepson will however continue to wait for his first game of the tour after the leg-spinner lost out to Jhye Richardson for the final spot in the XI for Tuesday's first one-day international in Pallekele.

Australia's first ODI XI: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey (wk), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Jhye Richardson, Josh Hazlewood

Captain Aaron Finch revealed Kane Richardson, who was a late addition to the ODI squad following injuries to Mitchell Starc (sliced finger), Sean Abbott (broken finger) and Mitchell Marsh (calf strain), played with the tendon injury during their third T20I defeat on Saturday.

The paceman suffered the injury in the warm-up but the Aussies did not realise the severity of it until he went for scans on Sunday. He has flown home and is expected to be sidelined for six weeks.

Scott Boland has been brought into the squad as cover.

Pat Cummins will play his first ODI in 18 months as Australia fields its strongest ODI side since it played India at home during the 2020-21 summer.

With Marcus Stoinis added to Australia's list of injuries in Sri Lanka and Ashton Agar in doubt, the door is ajar for spinner Matthew Kuhnemann to earn his first international appearance.

Sri Lanka v Australia Match Centre
The 25-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner has a reputable domestic record for Queensland in domestic One Day cricket, and has performed on Australia A's adjacent tour of Sri Lanka, most notably picking up 3/43 against the hosts' A side.

Kuhnemann's victims were all full Sri Lankan internationals, claiming Oshada Fernando, Niroshan Dickwella and Dhananjaya de Silva.

With Stoinis ruled out for the remainder of the ODI series, Travis Head also earns a re-call for the touring Australian side, who have been forced into a reshuffle given the spate of injuries.

On top of Stoinis' side strain and Ashton Agar's similar injury, Mitchell Marsh (calf) is being managed, Mitchell Starc (finger) remains out and Kane Richardson (hamstring) is also unavailable for selection. Sean Abbott broke a finger at the beginning of the tour, while Cameron Green has been held back from limited overs cricket with an eye to the upcoming World Test Championship series.

The five ODIs are not part of Cricket World Cup Super League and thus do not form part of Australia's qualification for India 2023.

Australia are 1-0 up in the series, with the second match to be played in Kandy on Thursday.
