[VIDEOS] Babar Azam becomes number 1 ranked batsman in ODIs

The two best ODI batsmen in the world are already playing in the same team and yes it is destructive.

No better sight in ODI cricket than a Kohli-Rohit partnership.

World’s best batsman - Babar Azam

Anwar and Inzamam were probably our best ever ODI bats and during their tenures there were always a few batsmen ahead of them in the world. Taking nothing away from them but they were not at the very top.

Miandad and Zaheer Abbas are easily our best ever ODI batsman and among the best of all time. A tier above Inzamam, Anwar and Yousuf

Babar is better than all Pakistani bats potential wise. Hes probably the third best potential ATG batsman to grace the world in 2000 after Kohli and Steve Smith.

I'm sorry Zaheer made a lot of soft runs but Miandad I can agree with. Although was still not the best in the world.

This post is wrong on so many counts that it boggles the mind. Tendulkar's strike rate for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 combined was around 93 and Sehwags in the same period was 123. The game has gotten even faster in recent times and Babar should be compared to contemporaries like Roy, Bairstow, Buttler etc. Check those guys' strike rates since 2015. Strike rates are extremely important in ODI cricket , not just pyjama cricket :inti

I was talking about the overall strike rate and not picking and choosing years. Jayasuriya had an overall strike rate of 91 and he was also an opener. It seems some people have different rules for different batsman just because they are from the other side of the border. :inti

ODI cricket has changed significantly during the course of those players' careers. i don't see what your point is.

Number 1 batsman in the world! I have ZERO doubts. What an amazing blessing of Almighty, Babar Azam we are proud of you! :’)

What strike rate are you expecting from Babar Azam? And kindly list the strike rate of all top players in this era. :inti

Since 2015, these batsmen have 40 + average at higher strike rates(min: 500 runs) and are actuiively playing

Buttler, Roy, Bairstow, Iyer, Pooran, Miller, Warner, Morgan, Quinton, Stokes, Kohli, Fakhar, Dhawan,Rohit, Guptill, Billings, Root, KL Rahul, Finch.

Babar is a brilliant ODI player. He still has some improvements to do with his hitting of spinners but overall kf he isnt the best, he is close to being the best.

Babar is Number one on current form.

Haters can keep crying, I will send them a pallet of tissues. Just give the damn address.

Well deserved, his form in last few years rightly reflects the position.

Why bother with tissues, let them drown in their own tears :P

Babar is cricket. What a legend. The best in the world. Wow.

#1 Batsman in the world. Absolutely well deserved. The haters will keep on hating, but Babar has done this amazing achievement without being in a star studded team. He came into a weak team, is now helping to improve that team even as a captain. This is why his achievement and records are worth so much more in my eyes than any Sharma, Kohli, Finch, and Root stat you throw at me. Babar is a champion batsman who deserves every achievement he's got so far. Many more to come as well.

Hope is a potentially good bat if improves his SR

He knows how to make runs

Anwar and Inzamam were probably our best ever ODI bats and during their tenures there were always a few batsmen ahead of them in the world. Taking nothing away from them but they were not at the very top.

Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad, Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Yousuf and Inzamam ul Haq all enjoyed periods where they were the best ODI batsmen in the world. Regardless of their actual ranking.

Well deserved. He is undoubtedly the best batsman in the world, across formats and has been, over the last two years. 60+ averages in both tests and ODIs with a several hundreds, along with some super innings in T20 cricket.

Stats don't care about your feelings. Babar is unmatched over the last two years, across formats.

A truly magnificent all-format player who at age of 26, looks destined for greatness over the next 6-7 years.

He is undoubtedly the best batsman that I have seen from Pakistan vs pace bowling and can play all kinds of bowling very well. The LOI stats are all great to have but his ultimate greatness will be decided by his exploits in test cricket.

There is no reason to suggest he can't become a great of the game in Test Cricket, the lack of big runs is an attribute that comes with time and he has age and hunger on his side to overcome that. There is no doubts in my mind now that Babar is undoubtedly the best U-30 batsman going in the world across all formats if we take the overall career of all the U-30 batsman that are still active and playing.

Now Babar is indeed taking his game to the next level. Today's innings was just 'WOW'.

I don't think players should worry too much about rankings.

This rankings importance has recently become important to some. In the past most players didn't really care about the rankings.

However, credit to Babar, a great achievement.

Lol it is amazing to see how one inning can change the view of some people within 1-2 day. Yesterday or day before yesterday you were putting him and Manish Pandey in the same bracket and now this? Waah. :inti

That was for one format.

On overall level, I mentioned he will be in league of Kane and Root but you deliberately ignored that because that probably doesn't suit your agenda like many of your other agendas which have got owned over past three months :))

Number 1 batsman in the world! I have ZERO doubts. What an amazing blessing of Almighty, Babar Azam we are proud of you! :’)

Bro, do you remember the days when I had to convince you he is far better than Ahmed Shehzad ? Glad to see you've finally seen the light.

Getting to the top is hard work; staying at the top is even harder.

Inshallah Babar will do us proud in the long run.

Today is just the first of many steps.

Having climbed to the top of the ICC's men's ODI batting rankings, Babar Azam has his eyes set on doing the same in Test cricket.

Babar followed in the footsteps of Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad and Mohammad Yousuf on Wednesday as he became the fourth player from Pakistan to sit atop the ODI batting rankings.

"This is another milestone in my career, which will now require even more hard work and absolute consistency with the bat in order for me to hold on to the ranking for an extended period of time," Babar said.

Having previously been the top batter on the ICC's men's T20I rankings, the one format Babar has not yet reached the summit of is Test cricket. Currently sixth on the Test batting rankings, he hopes to change that as soon as possible.

"I feel privileged and honoured to have joined the company of stalwarts like Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad and Mohammad Yousuf, who will always be the shining stars of Pakistan cricket," he said.

"I have also previously topped the T20I rankings, but the ultimate ambition and goal is to lead the Test rankings, which are the real testament and reward to a batsman's calibre, reputation and skills."

The 26-year-old celebrated his move to the top of the ODI batting rankings in style on Wednesday, scoring a thrilling 59-ball 122 as Pakistan completed a 204-run chase to win the third T20I against South Africa.

Speaking after the match, he confirmed becoming the No.1 ODI batsman had been a lifelong dream.

"It had always been my dream to be number one and that has been fulfilled," he said.

"There was lots of hard work, suffering, and sacrifice needed to get there. I have always been trying to improve my game with each passing day, learning new things and applying them. We all know cricket evolves and you have to keep up with it or risk getting left behind."

ICC

Well, its a great achievement and congrats to babar azam , all the hard work has paid off.
Hope his captaincy does not affect his batting and he goes on to greater heights.

In a world where Kohli, Rohit, Smith, Root and Williamson do not exist, he probably has a chance of claiming the title.

LOL at root and William. They are nowhere in the picture when it comes to Babar. His only competition is Kohli and Smith.

I will sum up my views.
Best ODI bat- At the moment yes quiet possibly, however not playing ODIs against top teams, less ODIs being played is a strong case against him being that. Luckily, Kohli also in a very obvious dip in form(according to his standards) helped Babar get that top spot.
Comparing him to an ATG like Kohli- I think Kohli has an extremely strong case for the greatest ODI bat of all time. Comparable across generations like Viv, ponting, tendulkar. Babar is too young in his career to be compared to Kohli. We don't compare Babar to Viv, Tendulkar. We compare him to Kohli because for us Kohli is the benchmark but even then the comparisons don't make sense considering how much Virat has achieved in his career. Can Babar get there? Only time and performances can tell because so far imo he hasn't achieved half the things Kohli has. However he has time to prove me wrong.

That was for one format.

On overall level, I mentioned he will be in league of Kane and Root but you deliberately ignored that because that probably doesn't suit your agenda like many of your other agendas which have got owned over past three months :))
The guy who keeps changing his favorite teams and players according to who is at top should be the last one to accuse others of having an agenda. I am not into this childish "owned you stuff" because it can come back to bite you in the future again but since it is you I would say you pretty much owned yourself within a day after Babar's inning. :yuvi :inti

In a world where Kohli, Rohit, Smith, Root and Williamson do not exist, he probably has a chance of claiming the title.

I don't know if root and Williamson are able to score 120(56) deliveries even on a flat pitch against poor SA B bowling line up.

LOL at root and William. They are nowhere in the picture when it comes to Babar. His only competition is Kohli and Smith.

Its a shame babar was injured for the nz test tour.

Would have been able to compare babar with williamson

Root’s 83 in 44 balls to chase 230 against South Africa in the previous WT20 against an attack of Steyn, Rabada & Tahir was a far greater innings than Babar’s knock yesterday.

Babar has not and most probably will not play a better T20I knock than that Root masterclass.

LOL at root and William. They are nowhere in the picture when it comes to Babar. His only competition is Kohli and Smith.

LOL’ing will not change the reality.

Babar is probably equal to Root and Williamson in LOIs but he has a long, long way to go before he can merit a comparison in Tests.

At 26, Babar has only 1 Test century away from home and cannot even score 150+ at home.

Root and Williamson at 26 were far more accomplished and refined Test batsmen.

Babar has a lot of catching up to do and he needs to do it fast because time is running out for him as far as building a legacy in Test cricket is concerned.

Not a hate post or anything but why is everyone, including Pakistan team, cutting cakes on Babar becoming No. 1 and people are going mad like small children. 😂😂

This individual ranking has no real significance and it changes very quickly. I don't think Virat even knew he is No. 1 batsmen for so long, neither did he care as long as he is contributing towards India's wins.

Because that is what fans do, especially fans of teams who don't produce great batsmen. Indian fans made a similar fuss after producing decent pace bowlers after decades of making do with trundlers.

Babar is a class act. This has been recognised by lots of seasoned watchers of the game. Kohli, Root, Smith etc are also world class batsmen. He is on his way to joining an elite club. Don't feel too bad about it, sooner or later we were going to get another great Pakistan batmsan. Rizwan is another one to watch out for.

Yeah no...

Root and Williams are part of the Fab 4 for a reason, they are modern greats of the game

Definitely not deserving of a lol ing response...

I hope he can inspire the next gen with these achievements. Pakistan batting stocks have been mediocre for far too long now.

It will surely inspire the next generation. After a long time, Pakistan has gotten a batsman who can play well in all formats.

Well deserved. That's a great achievement. I'd like to see it inspire some others around the team & Pakistan cricket to aim high. Pakistan might not have all the advantages of some big 3 teams, but if he can become best in the world, anyone can.

He's absolutely not taken the easy way to #1 either. If you look at his last 4-5 years he's got here with runs in South Africa (twice), runs in England, runs in Australia, runs in WI and finally some runs at home (no one should begrudge that of a Pakistani player considering all they have missed out on).

He's made them in bouncy countries, spin countries, flat countries (modern England ODI). You name it, he's scored there. I wasn't sure a couple of years ago if Pakistani fans were hyping him up too much- turns out he is completely world class.

I don't understand what the fuss is all about. Kohli loves chasing, so he can now chase Baber in the rankings.

Babar is certainly an excellent batsman and you have to be blind as a bat to not see it.

His rise is almost miraculous when you consider the fact that Pakistan is the least talented cricket nation and has always had the worst batsmen.

However, the issue is when deluded fans (basically 99.99% Pakistani fans) project him as the greatest batsman in the world and try to force him in the same league as Kohli, Smith, Rohit, Root, Williamson etc.

He has only 1 away Test hundred at 26 and cannot even score big at home, and he is nowhere near Kohli and Rohit level in white ball cricket and will certainly find it very difficult to get close to Kohli’s record in Test cricket as well.

There are several batsmen at Babar’s level in India but they don’t get a chance to pad their stats against weak bowling attacks all the time like Babar does, simply because the level of competition in India is extreme.

He can also fail in Test cricket for 2 years and not lose his place because he faces no competition. There is no pressure on him to alter his playing style either. He could have scored another 50 (50) the other day and his place in the side would not be under any threat.

There are more than a dozen batsmen in India who barely get a shot in India but would be superstars in Pakistan.

Pakistani fans should never compare their batsmen with India’s because it is a completely different ball game altogether.

Babar is the best a talentless team like Pakistan has got and he could be our best batsman ever since the bar is very low. However, it appears that it is not enough for our fans who will keep trying to force him into a league where he doesn’t belong.

What an embarrassing rant, but you have compiled so many it’s hard to know weather you believe half the nonsense you type.

You are so desperate to get brownie points I’m sure they too are embarrassed for you.

Younis Khan speaking about Babar:

"Babar Azam is one of the top players in the world so there must be something special in him that has got him to that stage"

"I feel that Babar's learning process is amazing but I let me say that when players in my generation came into the national side, we had the examples of Saeed Anwar, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Aamir Sohail, Ijaz Ahmed and Salim Malik in front of us; So in a sense we had a factory of readymade examples where we could go into learn and come out as good players; The players from today miss that kind of exposure to top players but Babar is lucky that he saw players like Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan playing in their prime"

"Babar went through a process and got the time he needed to grow as he has been with the team for a good few years now"

"The most important quality that Babar has is the desire and hunger to score runs; We are also seeing his captaincy improve with each outing as his shot selection"

"There is a lot of expectation of Babar Azam as it should be as he is a top international player and he is meeting those expectations"

"His fitness is improving as his technique as well, especially where he used to struggle against spin in the past but what we saw was that he overcame that problem in South Africa"

"He scored hundred here against spin bowling and also worked on his power-hitting as well; Before this series, he wouldnt play sweep shots but now given the expectations off him, he is playing sweep shots, cut and pull shots too

"Fitness is a demand for today's games are very high; We would play 3 match series over 15 days but we recently played 4 T20Is over 8 days - but due to Covid-19 and travelling, its much tougher for players"

"Its tougher for players nowadays as they have to train and some have to fast as well as its Ramadan as we saw in the case of Rizwan"

"Sometimes people say that they say glimpses of us in Babar, Fakhar and Rizwan which feels like an achievement for us"

Waqar Younis:

"The way Babar Azam is playing is there for all to see and the whole world is quite rightly praising him. He’s the best batsman in the world and If he keeps working hard and continues his efforts and continues to improve he will just get better and better. My well wishes are with him. We always tell him how good he is and my hope is that he continues to serve Pakistan."

Thanks for the inside info on unfulfilled potential of domestic Indian batsmen, but it's all ifs and buts in reality. Maybe they would be stars, maybe they would flop. Who cares other than really hardcore India fans? Start a new thread about them if you are that bothered, but you must accept Pakistan fan worship of Babar despite your objections because he has now earned it. Please come to terms with it, will be better for your peace of mind.

Special hundred that today from Babar.

Looked in the mood and in the zone after the criticism following the 1st ODI versus Australia.

ODI average currently stands at 57.72

Strike rate of 90.

Most ODI hundreds for Pakistan:

20 Saeed Anwar in 244 innings
15 Babar Azam in 83 innings
15 Mohammad Yousuf in 267 innings

I wonder if babar knows how good a player he really is?

Too often he plays with insecurities Today shows if he plays with confidence and intent he can become as good a player as any that has been

Just continue to believe n back yourself like today

Played like a number 1 ODI batsmen today.

Everything was in sync from ball one and crafted his innings perfectly.

That is more like it from Babar. He played a captain’s innings today. I want to see more of that from going forward.
