[VIDEOS] Can Sri Lanka win the ICC World Cup 2023?

Their bowling looks pretty weak and today against Australia their middle order and lower order also failed in batting. They were 157/1 and were bowled out at 209 that is definitely not good enough to win any tournament. It would be a big surprise if they can make it to the semifinals.

They need a square turner to win matches with this side. They have done well in patches. Overall very inexperienced side.

I do feel sorry for them.

They are missing 5 or 6 first choice players I reckon.

Tough going when so many of our main players are not available.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera will join the team in India as traveling reserves.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Selectors took this decision in order to ensure that the team has ready replacements in place to face contingencies, such as an injury to an existing squad member.

Their bowling looks very very weak. Can't see them defending a score with this lineup

their bowling is so weak that i don't see them defending even an above par score. They may win couple of matches, mostly against NED, AFG and possibly BD. Thats it..

Sri Lanka have been forced into another change to their beleaguered squad at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Matheesha Pathirana has not recovered from a shoulder injury, and the selectors have called time on his involvement in the remainder of the tournament.

Traveling reserve Angelo Mathews has been selected as his replacement, in a move that has been approved by the Event Technical Committee.

Pathirana played in Sri Lanka’s opening defeats to South Africa and Pakistan, but was not able to bowl to his full ability, conceding 185 runs across the two matches.

And the 20-year-old fast bowler’s time at the tournament has come to an early end.

His replacement Mathews has a wealth of experience, having played 221 ODIs for Sri Lanka in his lengthy career. An first-XI call-up in India would mean that Mathews has featured in each of the last four ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups, following appearances in 2011, 2015 and 2019.

But 35-year-old Mathews brings a very different skill-set to that of strike-bowler Pathirana, whose continued absence will be keenly felt by a squad beset by injuries.

Key bowler Wanindu Hasaranga suffered an injury prior to the World Cup that ruled him out of Sri Lanka’s entire campaign, while seamer Dushmantha Chameera was only named as a reserve as he too struggled with injuries.

Sri Lanka’s injury struggles stepped up yet further when captain Dasun Shanaka was ruled out of the tournament with a torn quadricep, to be replaced by Chamika Krunaratne.

And the new-look Lankans will hope for some performances from their second-string players when they face England in their next match in Bengaluru on Thursday.

If only they had a fully fit Angelo Mathews at the start of the tournament and a first-choice bowling attack available.

They could have been more competitive than they have been.

They are a good side when all their key players are available.

Sri Lanka lose in-form quick to injury for remainder of World Cup

Sri Lanka's push for a semi-final berth at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup has taken another turn with in-form quick Lahiru Kumara ruled out for the rest of the tournament.

Kumara hurt his left thigh during training in Pune ahead of Sri Lanka's crucial clash against Afghanistan at MCA International Stadium on Monday and has been replaced in the squad by fellow pacer Dushmantha Chameera.

Chameera's inclusion was approved by the Event Technical Committee on Sunday and the experienced right-armer could come into contention to replace Kumara for that pivotal match against Afghanistan.

While Chameera has plenty of experience for Sri Lanka with more than 100 appearances for his country, the loss of Kumara will be felt after he played a huge part in their upset victory over England in Bengaluru on Thursday.

Kumara picked up the key wickets of England skipper Jos Buttler and all-rounders Ben Stokes and Liam Livingstone during Sri Lanka's eight-wicket triumph and has collected five scalps for his country through four appearances at the tournament.

Chameera's addition means Sri Lanka have now added a total of three members into their 15-player squad since the start of the tournament, with Chamika Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews having already found a way into the group following the loss of skipper Dasun Shanaka (quad) and Matheesha Pathirana (shoulder) previously.

Sri Lanka currently have two wins from five appearances at the World Cup and sit in fifth place on the standings with four group matches remaining.

Sri Lanka squad: Kusal Mendis (c), Kusal Perera, Pathum Nissanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Kasun Rajitha, Angelo Mathews, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushan Hemantha, Chamika Karunaratne.

That'd sad. Kumara was breathing fire vs england.
Chameera and madhusanaks it is. Still very good. If only they had all 3 and hasaranga fit. Plus fit Matthews and chandimal.

After their loss today against Afghanistan, they are almost OUT of the race for the semifinals. They were always likely to struggle without Hasaranga who has been performing really well for them in the last couple of years.
