He's supposed to be the next big thing in South African cricket and as the title suggests many feel that he could go on to be the next AB de Villiers.

He's currently playing in the Under 19 World Cup and has scored 65 versus India and then 104 against Uganda.

Possibly one to watch.

U19 wc gives a chance to young players to shine at the highest level in their age group. We will see a few future stars from each country.

Was watching his highlights. Lol the guy literally looks like a reincarnation of ABD.

Was watching his highlights. Lol the guy literally looks like a reincarnation of ABD.

Even AB was not AB when he started he only started to become AB 360 well in to his career .I would recommend the young man to fist focus on building a good solid technical base like his hero did and then expand his repotore

A good T20 prospect but for Tests and ODIs, need to learn several other aspects of batting.

If I am not wrong, he bowls leg spin too and is seen more of an all rounder than just a proper batsman.

Obviously, many players who used to bowl in their U-19s ended up becoming specialist batsman only so only time will tell how it stacks for him.

It definitely seems like he has copied a lot of the aspects of his batting on AB.

Exciting prospect. Always good to see potentially good, young cricketers.

Unstoppable.

Brevis is leading the run-scorers charts with 265 runs in three games at 88.33 at the #U19CWC 2022.

This includes a century and two fifties.

Brilliant innings yet again.
Well done to him. Unfortunately he is a South African born in the wrong generation. It will be hard to shine as a SA's player over the next decade.

97 vs England today

Some of his shots are just out of this world (or ground even!)

You really think he’ll play for South Africa? 😆

ECB are probably arranging all the documents for him to get a British Citizenship.

Impressive performances. South Africa can start looking at him as an alternative option to David Miller.

He is too good for u19s level

If he was Pakistani he would be in the T20 and ODI sides right now. He is more talented than Babar and Rizwan both

Miller??

Only the bald guy batting at number 5 is clearly better than him.

Amazing talent this lad.

Surely won't be long before he's playing for the national team.

Dewald Brevis nicknamed 'Baby AB' by some fans, the 18-year-old made scores of 65, 104, 96 and 97 in the u19 World Cup

Looking forward to seeing him in the SA senior team as they continue their resurgence…

I seriously hope he keeps his head in check and aims for 10k Plus ODI runs and 8000 Test runs.

He can achieve this as long as IPL doesn’t destroy his focus!

A day after his picture donning the old Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) jersey went viral all over social media, South Africa's ‘Baby AB’, Dewald Brevis, left speculations brewing after yet another video went viral on Twitter where he is heard talking about his love for IPL and names his favourite franchise and cricketers.

In the video shared during the U19 World Cup 2022, Brevis said that he has been a big fan of the IPL and wants to play the tournament for his favourite franchise, RCB, as it has two of his favourite cricketers - Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

“For me one of the biggest dream is to play for the Proteas. I'm such a big fan of IPL and I would love to play the IPL for RCB. I love RCB because Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers was there. I'm big fan of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers," he said.

Brevis has been one of the most talked-bout players in the ongoing U19 World Cup on West Indies after fans found a striking resemblance between his batting technique and that of South African legend De Villiers, hence the name 'Baby AB'. And the 18-year-old has been living up to the expectations with his batting scores as well. In four matches so far, Brevis has scored four consecutive half-century scores with his figures reading - 65 against India, 104 against Uganda, 96 against Ireland and 97 against England.

Brevis is also a leg-spinner and has picked six wickets in the tournament as well.

Here comes another one who will retire from International cricket by the age of 30

South Africa’s young superstar Dewald Brevis took the tournament by storm, scoring 506 runs in six innings at an average of 84.33.

The brilliant Brevis showed off his enormous ability right from the start of the tournament with a fine 65 against India, accompanied with 2/43 from his useful off-spin.

And the 18-year-old very nearly followed up that knock with a hat-trick of centuries, hitting 104 against Uganda before falling four runs short of a ton against Ireland and three runs short in the loss to England.

Brevis’ only failure in the tournament was a disappointing six against Sri Lanka, but he finished his campaign on a high with an outstanding 138 against Bangladesh to steer his side to a successful run chase in the seventh-place playoff.

Reasons for comparisons between Brevis and AB de Villiers were clear from the moment he took to the crease against India, with the player having clearly modelled his style on the South African legend.

But there are worse players to emulate, and on the evidence of his displays in the Caribbean, Brevis has every chance of also making it in the international game.

BREVIS' RECORD-BREAKING NUMBERS

65 and 2/43 vs India
104 and 2/18 vs Uganda
96 and 0/13 vs Ireland
97 and 2/40 vs England
6 and 1/52 vs Sri Lanka
138 and 0/34 vs Bangladesh

WHAT THEY SAID

South Africa coach Shukri Conrad: “Dewald Brevis is a player who’s on everyone’s lips. He’s AB de Villers 2.0.”

ICC pundit Natalie Germanos: “He’s been absolutely brilliant. I’d heard a lot about him coming into the tournament, and seen a little bit of him as well. We all know he looks like AB de Villiers, he plays like him, strokes the ball just like him. He’s been brilliant through the tournament, whether it be with the ball, in the field, with the bat. He’s an absolute star, and for me – no pressure on the youngster – I really feel this is one for the future for South Africa.”

ICC commentator Alan Wilkins: “It’s almost as if he premeditates and says ‘this bowler’s going to go’. He plays these audacious shots, he’s got touch, but he goes big down the ground. He’s a formidable force for South African cricket, and I think he’s going to go all the way.”

DEWALD BREVIS IN HIS OWN WORDS

“I think I was born with a passion to play cricket and a love for the game, and I really want to make a difference with cricket," Brevis told the ICC.

“As a youngster, me and my brother always played backyard cricket, he had such a big ambition also for the game, there was lots of passion, lots of laughter, lots of tears.

"My mum always told me to believe that I was going to do something in sports, and cricket is what I want to do, that’s what keeps me driven.

“In my era growing up everyone knows AB de Villiers, he’s been such a role model for me from a very young age.

"Growing up watching him at SuperSport Park for the first time live, on TV, I always loved the way he played, 360 degrees, taking on the bowlers, being aggressive.

“I’ve chatted to AB quite a lot, it’s a special relationship, something that I keep close to my heart and don’t really talk much about, but he’s given me some advice and small things to improve my game.

“I love a lot of shots, but if I had to choose I believe it’d be playing a straight drive or straight over the top, but 360… I like playing 360!”

He was brilliant.

South Africa seem like they can rise again. Some of these new youngsters are looking promising.

Another fine knock from Brevis today, one of the only positives in this years IPL for Mumbai so far. 49 of 25 balls including four 6s in a row against Chahar. Definetly a future star in the making.

Struggles on short pitch stuff. He will be found out in international cricket if he doesnt do anything about it.

Nowhere near the finished article, but at this stage of his career he looks a special batter.

A star in the making if he continues to improve.

Dewald Brevis has lit up the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season and he has given some impressive performances. In the game against Punjab Kings, Brevis scored a quickfire 49 and he even smashed Rahul Chahar for four consecutive sixes. Then, against Lucknow Super Giants, he smashed 31 off 13 deliveries and till the time he was at the crease, one could not take their eyes off him. The young Proteas batter had earlier set the stage on fire at the ICC U-19 World Cup as he amassed 506 runs. The batter has now revealed the two players he has always idolised.

Speaking on the MI show on Star Sports, Brevis said, "I think lot of people know AB de Villiers, and I look up to him since I was a youngster and love the way he played and how he goes about his game. Also Sachin Tendulkar, always idolised him because the way he plays and the way he lives about his mottos and how he goes about the things in life."

"I also like Virat Kohli and as a bowler Shane Warne, I look up to him because I'm also a leg spinner so that's why," he stated further.

Speaking about this year's IPL, Dewald Brevis said, "I'm so excited, for me I really look forward to spending time with every single player in the team, learning from them and when i get the opportunity, use it mostly just to learn, play the game and to enjoy it and keep it simple."

Mumbai Indians have lost their opening six matches in the ongoing IPL 2022 season. On Saturday, Mumbai Indians suffered a 18-run loss against Lucknow Super Giants.

In 2014, Mumbai Indians had lost their first five matches, but they managed to progress to the playoffs that season.

NDTV

Dewald Brevis has already made an impression at the 2022 IPL and has been tipped to be fast-tracked into South Africa’s XI for the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup later this year.

But it was “Baby AB’s” stunning showing at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup earlier this year that sped up his journey to the top of the game.

If eyebrows were raised when the Indian Premier League’s Mumbai Indians splashed out Rs 3 crore to bring an 18-year-old Brevis to the franchise, then the doubters cannot have been paying attention.

The South African teenager immediately showed his class, slotting into the IPL starting XI at number three for Mumbai and displaying his outrageous range of shots and ability to score eye-wateringly fast, stroking 29 from 19 balls in his first IPL outing against Kolkata Knight Riders.

And Brevis has barely looked back, slamming five maximums in a 25-ball 49 that almost helped his side pull off an unlikely run chase against Punjab Kings, and hammering 31 from 13 balls against Lucknow Super Giants.

But a pair of low scores saw Brevis suddenly on the outer in Mumbai as Indians coach Mahela Jayawardena shuffled his side in an attempt to find the winning formula.

But Brevis' star is still on the rise and the now 19-year-old is tipped to be fast-tracked into South Africa’s full T20I side ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

But nobody who watched the brilliant Brevis light it up at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in January and February will have been surprised by how the past few months have gone for the boy from Johannesburg.

Brevis was comfortably the top-scorer at the tournament, hitting 506 runs in six innings, including two centuries as well as a 96 against Ireland and a 97 against eventual runners-up England.

South African teenage batting sensation Dewald Brevis has signed deals to play in the upcoming Lanka Premier League and Caribbean Premier League T20 events.

The 19-year-old will play for the Kandy Falcons in the Sri Lankan T20 showpiece, which starts on 31 July, and the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League from 31 August.

Earlier in the year, Brevis made headlines when he broke the record for the most runs scored in the U19 Cricket World Cup - 506 runs in six innings at an average of 84.33.

His exploits saw him bought by the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League auction for R6 million.

In seven IPL innings, Brevis scored 161 runs at an average of 23.00 and a strike rate of 142.47. His 49 off 25 balls against the Punjab Kings was the most memorable.

Meanwhile, Brevis' compatriot, Dwaine Pretorius, has also signed with the Patriots in the CPL.

Just watched some highlights and this guy is the real deal.

SA would have been unstoppable with him in the team.

Yeah, his striking is next level.

Will underachieve if he doesn't finish as SA great.

You can tell he's been watching a lot of AB and Guptill by the way he strikes the ball.

Hopefully the hype doesn't get to him and he can perform at the big tournaments.

For all the Talent AB had - he never did enough at world tournaments.
Great test batsman though

WInning world tournaments is a team effort. THs is not wimbledon single. It is not like fans watch only world cup matches. Only their country man has to worry about that. Neutral fans shouldn't worry about what he won what he didn't win. His batting ability is the only thing that matters.

Bavuma the quota player is keeping this guy out. On merit he deserves to play ahead of the South African captain. What a shame.

South Africa's teenage batting prodigy Dewald Brevis put the world on notice with a blistering 57-ball 162 yesterday, then revealed he learned the game studying videos of AB de Villiers on short-form social media platform Instagram.

The 19-year-old wrote a new chapter in an already burgeoning reputation when he torched bowlers for 13 sixes and as many boundaries in a domestic T20 match in Potchefstroom.

The knock was the joint third-highest individual score in T20 history, behind only Chris Gayle and Aaron Finch.

Gayle holds the world record for the highest T20 innings when he smashed 17 sixes in his 175no from 66 balls for IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013, while Australia's T20 skipper Finch hit 172 for Australia against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in mid-2018.

Brevis announced himself at the start of the year with a stunning U19 World Cup with 506 runs in six games, the most in the tournament's history, and was then part of a three-way bidding war at the IPL auction where the then 18-year-old was bought by the Mumbai Indians for about A$500,000.

Nicknamed 'Baby AB' given his stance and shots bear a striking resemblance to the South African legend, Brevis revealed it was intentional imitation.

"From young, and still now, I watch lots of videos on Instagram about AB and all these guys, how they hit the ball," Brevis told the host broadcaster.

"I like AB's natural bat swing and back in your head, you get a visual of how the ball goes, how the bat falls and everything. So I try to watch as most as much as possible, and to just also be myself."

A part-time leg-spinner, with 12 wickets in his 32-game career so far, Brevis also modelled that part of his action on another icon of the game.

"That's how I started bowling leg-spin, I watched Shane Warne bowl," he told reporters. "It's something that comes naturally I would say, and it's just loving the game, I really love the game and I love to watch videos of players."

While some pundits call for Brevis to be rushed into international cricket, Brevis is content to bide his time on the domestic circuit. He played seven games in his debut IPL season, and the Mumbai Indians have snapped him up for their franchise in South Africa's new T20 league, launching in January.

He has also played for St Kitts and Nevis in the CPL, and will soon be headed to Sri Lanka for the Lanka Premier League.

"This is a next stepping stone," Brevis said in response to questions about his international ambitions. "I believe that the people in control they know the best and everything works out as it should.

"This is where I have to be, I have to do this, this is part of my journey, I am at the right place where I need to be. We never know what happens."

But hitting the ball – and hard – remains his true love.

"I'm always looking to hit boundaries. I think that's a very important thing in playing fearlessly and aggressively is to be in a very strong position," Brevis said.

"And if the ball is there, you take it on."

While most stars would have come to T20 cricket through a pathway of playing 50-over games, Brevis has gone the other way, bred on a diet of T10 cricket.

"In T10 cricket there's less balls, so there's more pressure on you to score from the start," Brevis explained.

"So it learns you to adapt and to find ways in your strengths in how to get runs, so it's batting quick in T10s and then when you go to T20 cricket it's just a small little adjustment, but you're still always positive and looking to score every single ball."

Brevis brought up his fifty from 18 balls, and had a century by 35 balls – the joint fifth-fastest in T20 history – and 17 balls later had reached 150.

"I always keep everything the same, I'm Dewald and I'm true to my game, how I play, my strengths. I'll always be true to that."

Brevis's 162 helped the Titans post 3-271 from their 20 overs, while their opposition, the Knights, were hardly a slouch in replying with 9-230.

Although the winning margin was a comfortable 41-runs, the match aggregate score of 501 set a new world record, beating the previous mark of 497 set in a New Zealand domestic game in 2016.

I seriously hope he keeps his head in check and aims for 10k Plus ODI runs and 8000 Test runs.

He can achieve this as long as IPL doesn’t destroy his focus!

Which youngster (under 28) in his right mind cares even remotely about test and ODI runs. People who talk about tests/ODIs haven't perhaps interacted with youngsters around playing in grounds. The only thing they care about is T20 and sooner we realize that, the better it will be for the game.

Facts. Even AB retired way too early

Reverse racism at play. He is not black enough for South Africa. Him and Brook are probably the two best young batting talents in the world.

Handed his maiden Proteas call-up, Dewald Brevis is set to hit the ground running against Australia to boost his chances for the CWC23 squad.

U19 World Cup star Brevis is excited to make his senior debut after he was called up to the South Africa limited-overs teams for the upcoming month-end series against Australia.

"From a very young age, I've wanted to be part of this amazing set-up of the Proteas," Brevis said ahead of the series.

"It's been an honour and it's been wonderful to live my dream and to spend time with the team. Couldn't have asked for anything better".

This won't be Brevis' first taste of action in a South Africa jersey, having broken a few records during the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup in 2022. The South African youngster then hit 506 runs from six matches in the U19 World Cup, the most any batter has made in a single edition of the tournament.

With big runs come big expectations, especially when you are nicknamed after one of the greatest cricket players produced by the country and Brevis knows it. The 'Baby AB' tag may not go away soon, but Brevis is prepared to embrace the pressure.

"I know there will always be expectations and I always like that because there is more reason to show who you are then," he said.

"Pressure is always there; I feel the pressure, but I like it. It's just how you deal with it, just being yourself and enjoying the moment and trying not to think too much of it.

The top-order batter insisted that he wants people to know him as Dewald Brevis and talked about building his own legacy as a cricket player.

"I just want people to get to know me as Dewald Brevis and just see how I go about my things and I want to inspire people and be an example for people."

The series begins with three T20Is from 30 August, followed by five ODIs.

Own your space: Brevis’ lessons for U19 World Cup hopefuls

Speaking ahead of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024, beginning on 19 January in South Africa, Proteas phenom Dewald Brevis reminisced on what was a breakout tournament for him in 2022.

Brevis was a standout performer at the most recent edition of the Under 19 showcase, amassing 506 runs while averaging 84.33 and striking 90.19, with the next-best player (Haseebullah Khan of Pakistan) putting up 380 runs during the tournament.

The South African's 18 sixes were eight more than the next best on the list, and his efforts led not only to senior Proteas selection, but a taste of T20 domestic cricket around the world.

"I get good flashbacks when I think back, there's so much good memories you build with the team, with your players, and with other countries’ players," Brevis began, reflecting on his time in the West Indies.

"It's absolutely like a springboard because you're on (the) world stage and there's so much opportunity that you can just grab, and then remember, everyone is watching and it can boost your career very quickly.”

The young batter feels what is at stake even at an Under-19 global tournament can bring the best out of those who thrive in tense situations.

“I feel there was always pressure situations and I thrive on pressure. I like pressure. The team was quite a few times in pressure environments and pressure situations, and I really enjoyed that,” Brevis added.

“It is against the best of the best of the countries, their best U19s, so you learn to play against those guys and what to do in certain situations.

“You just go out there and play against the best.”

It's one thing to thrive at the underage level, yet another to belong at the senior level, making the leap against experienced world-class players.

To handle the jump, Brevis believes the most important thing for a player is to know why they've been trusted in their team selection

“I think to be honest it always stays the same because a cricket game is a cricket game,” Brevis said while focusing more on the constants of the game irrespective of the level.

“You have to own your space. You have to know you are here for a reason. And I know that, and I'm ready to take on anything.

“When you go up high and play at higher levels, for example, the senior Proteas team or even in IPL, there's much more expectation, much more pressure that’s always there. But when you start playing there, you learn how to develop and play differently because it is the pace you face is quicker.

“I feel everyone should know that they are selected for a reason and you have to take ownership and what you've learned so far."

Sixteen teams feature at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup, with 12 sides progressing to the next stage of the competition. Four teams will then move through to the semi-finals beginning on 6 February, with the final held on 11 February.

The hosts meet the West Indies at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom in one of two matches on the opening day of the tournament, while Ireland take on the USA at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

de Villiers himself was average in his first few years. You are comparing his peak with the fresh faced Brevis.

DEWALD BREVIS LIGHTS UP CENTURION, NOW FOR NEWLANDS...

Dewald Brevis may play for MI Cape Town but he has a great affinity with Centurion.

It is where the former Afrikaans Hoer Seunskool (Affies) learner has played the majority of his fledgling professional career.

And it was the familiar comforts of the grass banks and braai smell hovering in the air that ignited his Betway SA20 Season 2 on Thursday evening.

Brevis has endured an “interesting” second season up until this point with just 65 runs in seven matches.

Both MI Cape Town coach Robin Peterson and captain Kieron Pollard have needed to field questions about whether the talented prodigy in fact needed a break and some time away from the spotlight.

But both Peterson and Pollard were with the youngster last year at Major League Cricket in the United States when Brevis took centre stage at a critical period of MI New York’s campaign to play a pivotal role in them eventually winning the inaugural championship.

And they have unconditionally backed him to find form just at the right time here in South Africa too.

Their prophecy was fulfilled at Centurion with MI Cape Town’s season on the line in a must-win game against the Pretoria Capitals. Brevis repaid the faith by surpassing his entire season’s tally with 66 not out just 32 balls to spearhead the visitors to a competition high of 248/4.

It was a pulsating innings that included a half dozen sixes - which included a ‘no look’ lofted on-drive off Daryn Dupavillon that had the commentators gasping for superlatives.

“This has been an interesting time. Grateful to contribute to the team and to have a great score,” Brevis said.

“Really enjoyed being out there. I love it here. I back us all the way and we will give it our all.”

Brevis has also formed a special relationship with his experienced captain Pollard due to their previous stints together both in the US and at the IPL while representing the Mumbai Indians global franchise and it was certainly evident on Thursday evening.

Pollard was consistently motivating his young charge throughout his innings and there was even a special moment when Brevis reached his half-century with the big West Indian prompting him to acknowledge the crowd.

"It was unbelievable (batting with Pollard),” Brevis said.

“He told me to wait after a slower ball and I took one and gave the strike to him. That gave us the momentum.”

The entire MI Cape Town family will hope that Brevis can repeat the magic at his Newlands home too on Saturday against the Capitals to sneak his team into the playoffs through the back door.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Brevis revealed his goals for the upcoming season, which gets underway with the T20 Challenge on Friday:

"I want to get into all the Proteas squads, to be an all-format player. I want to be noticed as an all-rounder, not just a batter. I hope in the new season I really get more opportunities with the ball,”

“I want to be the best Dewald Brevis, play with a smile, enjoy the game and do my best,” he added. “If I do that, put in the hard work, I know exactly what will happen.”

“It’s interesting … I’m never happy or satisfied with my performance, I feel that’s dangerous. When you think you’ve ‘made it’ or you’ve achieved something great, the game will bring you back down to earth very quickly. I’m always in competition with myself. I want to be Dewald Brevis.”

“I know exactly what I want, I want to inspire people. I want to be the best cricketer that has ever lived. I will do whatever it takes to do that.”
