[VIDEOS] How has Mohammad Rizwan managed to improve so much?

Andy Flower speaking the press before start of Abu Dhabi leg of PSL 6

“Having said that, I would also say that Rizwan has done a good job as captain as well and I like the way he approaches the game. He is confident, he is smart, he is brave and he leads from the front as we saw with the bat in his hands"

“This is also a very good growth opportunity for Rizwan as he is going to play a very important part in Pakistan’s future in the medium term. We hope that our franchise is playing part in the growth of not only him as an individual and a leader but also in other young prospective international players"

"It’s wonderful to see a player like Rizwan, who had been labelled as not a T20 player. It’s also wonderful to see a young player like that show what you can do with skill and an understanding of the game through his brave, courageous and aggressive batting"

Mohammad Rizwan goes to the top of the PSL 6 run-scoring chart

Mohammad Rizwan: The keeper-bat who had a phenomenon one year

• Has scored 1320 runs in one year, the second highest amongst all players

• Has 43 dismissals behind the wicket in one year, the second on the list of wicketkeepers

Derby, 2 July 2021:

Mohammad Rizwan, hailing from Peshawar is a wicketkeeper-batsman who made his white-ball debut in the series against Bangladesh in Bangladesh in April 2015, while he made his debut in the Test cricket against New Zealand at Hamilton in November 2016.

Earlier in his career, Rizwan had never been a regular feature in the national team, but since 2020, the right-handed batsman has been a permanent feature in the team. He captained the side in the tw0-match Test series against New Zealand in December/January 2020-21 in the absence of regular captain Babar Azam, who was unavailable due to finger injury.

Even though Pakistan lost both Test matches, but Rizwan remained Pakistan’s highest run-getter in the Test series. He scored 202 at 50.50 with three half-centuries from four innings. He also took four catches behind the stumps.

Rizwan has featured in 15 Tests for Pakistan, where he has scored 820 runs at 43.15 with six half-centuries and one hundred. He has 38 dismissals to his name which included 37 catches and one stumping. Since last year, Rizwan has featured in 10 Tests, where he has scored 605 runs at 46.53, which included one hundred and five half-centuries. Behind the stumps, he has 24 dismissals to his name which included 23 catches and one stumping. Amongst Pakistan’s batsman, only Azhar Ali has scored more runs 694 at 49.57, with two hundreds and as many half-centuries from 10 Tests.

In 38 ODIs played so far, Rizwan has scored 772 runs at 28.59, with two hundreds and three half-centuries to his name. He has taken 34 catches and has one stumping. Since 1 May 2020, he has featured in six ODIs, scoring 67 runs. He has taken five catches behind the wickets during this period.

Similarly, he has played 36 T20Is, where he has scored 843 runs at 44.36, one hundred and six half-centuries to his name. He has 18 catches and six stumping to his name in this format. Since last year, in 20 T20Is, he has scored 663 runs at 82.87 which included one hundred and six half-centuries. Behind the wickets, he has 19 scalps to his name which includes 15 catches and four stumpings.

Since 1 May 2020, the wicketkeeper-batsman has featured in 33 international matches across all formats, where has scored a staggering 1320 runs at 50.76, with two hundreds and 11 half-centuries.

The runs scored in the year makes him only the second player in the world, only 12 runs behind his teammate and captain Babar who has scored 1332 runs at 45.93 from 29 international matches, where he struck three hundreds and 10 half-centuries.

Amongst the wicketkeepers, England’s Jos Butler tops the list with 59 dismissals to his account from 26 matches, while Rizwan is second on the list with 43 dismissals (38 catches, five stumpings).

Overall in 89 international matches played so far Rizwan has 97 dismissals to his name which include 89 catches and eight stumpings.

While talking to Fakhar Zaman exclusively for PCB’s Digital, Mohammad Rizwan said:

“I always enjoyed batting but unfortunately couldn’t perform well in this department at the start of my international career, but change in batting order has favored me a lot. Current team management has shown their confidence by promoting my batting order and I tried to capitalize it well.

“At the start of my international career, no one believed that I could hit long sixes but off course I worked on my hard hitting ability.

“I was fortunate enough to get tips from Mohammad Hafeez, Mushtaq Ahmed and Shahid Afridi. Once Ramiz Raja was walking beside the nets and he asked me to keep the head still, which helped me a lot.

“As a wicketkeeper-batsman, Test cricket requires commitment from me and if you are a cricketer and featuring in all three formats, you must have great fitness.

“I have worked really hard on my batting and wicket-keeping skills before the tour of England last year. In England, the conditions were tough and the red ball swings late, so to get command over it, you have to work extra hard on it.

“In white-ball cricket, English conditions are favorable to score runs on board. If you stay longer on the wicket, you will get more out of it. I have worked on it and will try to implement this in the forthcoming series.”

Some would say Boult, Southee, Jamieson and Sodhi will count as atleast a half decent attack against which he scored 89 at SR of 150 to win the match for his side in NZ.

He is not a world beater in T20s but has been doing the job in recent times.

Yeah and that’s the only decent knock he’s played against a quality side in recent times. All his other performances are vs South Africa b and c at home/sa and then Zimbabwe b where they almost lost the t20 series so hold your horses. He’s done well as makeshift opener but he needs to be consistent in SENA against quality attacks before being a world beater. Fans are hyping him up already based on inflated stats. Yes he’s an upgrade on Sarfraz but that doesn’t mean much considering he didn’t do much since the SL game in the CT17 (with 2 drop catches). Rizwan needs to be consistent against the top sides in their conditions to be considered a great.

Someone needs to tell him to stop, he’s breaking all traditions here , he should become complacent now because his place in team is set - don’t just keep on improving and getting better and better , only Imran Khan was allowed to do that in Pakistan cricket.

Sorry, who is hyping him and saying he is a world beater? Contrary to that I said he is not a world beater as of now.

Its a fact that he has done extremely well across the formats (Pak didnt play much ODIs) in last year or so. His numbers in T20I during the same period speak for himself, even if anyone wants to discount the SA T20s (Where every specialist batsman other than him and Babar flopped), one cant deny his improvement of his game which he showed in the recent PSL season as well. All the recent developments might not have shown he is a world beater but, have clearly shown he is one of the best batsman in Pakistan currently. Yes would like to see more of him in ODIs but, that doesnt change what he has already proved backed by numbers in international cricket as well as domestic in atleast two formats.

So the covid outbreak in the England set up means Rizwan will open the T20s against England's c team bowlers.

This guy is easily the luckiest person in the world for the past year or so! He has the best chance in the world to win the lottery if he actually plays it!

Yes I suppose he is also lucky to be the best pure wicket-keeper in the world and it has nothing to do with his talent and the hard work that he puts into his keeping and fitness.

Why are you always so bitter? You must be a Sarfaraz fan.

Was so hoping to see what Rizwan is all about against Archer, Woakes, Jordan etc and see how his 'surviving the initial outburst' would impact the rest of the innings for his team mates.

He probably would have smashed the Curran bros down to fine leg and square leg as he does feast on mediocrity to his credit.

Jake Ball was lined up and deleted by Hafeez, Azhar and Fakhar Zaman in the Champion's trophy. Easy runs for Rizwan to feast on!

Yeah lets deflect the argument by bringing his keeping abilities into the frame. Shadab Khan is the best fielder in the Pakistan side right now, we dont tend to refer to this fact when discrediting his batting or bowling at that time do we?

Opportunity of a lifetime to come in after 4 balls (practically opener) with both Imam and Babar in the hut

Played some decent strokes against England c, and then got out when Pakistan needed someone to stand and bat. A 50 odd here would have been enough for his fans to tell you for the next 10 years how he is a deserving opener and is better than Babar in reality!

One bad match and you are celebrating. Rizwan has been one of the most consistent batsman in the world across all formats in recent times.

idk what you are going on about but Rizwan is definitely more hard working and a better player than Babar.

Babar might be more talented but Rizwan has outdone Babar in all facets of the game.

Thank God we have actual selectors in the PCB and not emotional fans who will drop players after one bad game.

Definitely should have done better today all things considered.

However doesn’t change the fact that this is the guy who is the reason we haven’t been whitewashed in our last 3 T20 series (including Zimbabwe) plus is our second best batsmen in terms of skill plus ability and by far our best batsmen in terms of game awareness and versatility

Rizwan got turned inside out after a good start to his innings:

It is foolishness to play Rizwan at 4. 4 requires a specialist batsman. Rizwan has to come at 6 and sometimes at 5 if top order has done well. In this line up Rizwan has to come after Saud Shakeel and Sohab Maqsood. Bowling sides will be happy if a batsman like Rizwan is slated to walk in at 4.

Saud should definitely be at 4, but I reckon we have Rizwan above Sohaib. It'll be mutually beneficial for both of them, since Rizwan loves to bide his time and can negotiate collapses. While Sohaib would probably prefer less time/fewer overs left in the innings as that usually simplifies the equation (i.e. go big, go hard), and that's usually when he's at his best.

I like Rizwan but he is failing to find his feat in ODIs big time.

Don’t know if going back to Sarfraz is a better option, however it seems apparent that Rizwan is clueless about his game at 4 - not sure if he wants to be an accumulator or aggressor.

Maybe Sarfraz could be a better option however I’d doubt he’d do better on current form plus in terms of keeping Rizwan is easily superior, so I reckon Rizwan should be used as a buffer in ODIs and positioned according to the situation

Rizwan has scored 85 runs in last 8 ODIs - that is very disappointing.

He hasn't... has he?

bashing C grade bowlers from SA and Zim, scoring consolation runs vs Aus/NZ when everything was lost

WOW he is our greatest batsman; another parchi of IK

Imran's parchi

Misbah, Waqar, Rizwan

Yes, he is keeping Sarfaraz out who would have scored a breathtaking century

Yep this parchi has been our best test batsmen over the last year, top performing against both New Zealand and England away on damn tough wickets while the rest of our "brilliant" batsmen failed. Also scored a century against the same SA bowling line up that demolished WI and the same SA line up that made Babar Azam into their bunny but yep such a parchi.

It's reactionary fans that really deserve all the loses Pakistan endures.

Rizwan's issue in ODI's has been mental and it's obvious when you watch him bat. That being said I do think that maybe Sarfraz should take his place however I'd doubt he'd do any better plus his keeping would be a massive downgrade to Rizwan's.

Also it's funny how fans are always blaming Misbah when under Mickey we were whitewashed twice in a row by Eng and AUs

Because against Australia, we played our B team not the otherwise...

Dont worry Misbah cheerleader, we will even break Mickey's record under Misbah

:))) Misbah cheerleader. Just because I acknowledge the fact that we were a rubbish team before Misbah doesn't mean i love him.

And anyway even if we were playing our A team for one series we were still humiliated against every top team we had a one day series with, even with our full team

This fraud will be allowed to play in this team until he scores a pointless 50

he will probably score it in the next match

Probably we win next game and then everything will be back to normal;
and with some excuses

Too early to criticize, we won against England, hurray!!!

What an amazing technique... the way he walks back looks like he just scored match winning 265 runs breaking Rohit Sharma's record

He always had the potential, as was evident by his domestic performances and stats, his time for take-off was now! But some players do waste themselves, he avoided it by working hard on his game and fitness. He is humble too. He is the Pakistani Virat Kohli, albeit not on his level but still the best player to look up to especially for youngsters in Pakistan cricket.

he hasn't

stick him outside of Pakistan and he'll be worse than sohail tanvir with the bat

a one average series in nz and now against SA of 2021... lol
lets not act like he will ever be a WK like SL/Sa/ind/eng have had in the likes of buttler/dhoni etc etc

This post has aged terribly.

Hes our second best batsmen after Azam across all formats

Gun player!

I heard a rumour that Rizwan’s improvement as a batsman is down to top secret tip that he read in a book - sshhh, Ahmed Shezad and Umar Akmal must not find out or they too could become superior batsmen.

The tip was “hard work and practice, practice, practice is the way to mastering any skills” <— interesting and groundbreaking stuff , as many a Pakistani cricketer had previously thought just appearing in TV commercials , taking selfies, posing with sunglasses, signing autographs , taking wives for shopping etc. would also make your batting or bowling improve.. but these methods just haven’t quite worked.

Meanwhile Rizwan has quietly gone to nets and looks like he’s spent many hours working hard to address his weak areas and practicing , working on improving his batting and has become a much more capable and confident batsman.

Amazing how the change in mindset, and simple change from 4th to 1st position creates a remarkable difference in his performance.

This is all down to the mental side of the game. Personally i think he needs to open, drop imam to 3, and drop babar to 4. We need babar to carry his bat through the innings, the only way he gets out is if he gets unplayable deliveries like in the eng series.

Rizwan
Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Saud

A first class average of 43, 11 Fc hundred for a wicketkeeper is a very, very good average. With some exceptions to the rule, if a player is good enough for longer format of game , he is well suited to all formats of game.

This batting-order will work better than the current one but it will not happen because Babar cares too much about personal milestones to bat at 4.

I think if Fakhar and Rizwan swap their positions, it could work out very nicely under the current circumstances.

Fakhar can bat at 4 and play impactful knocks. It would also protect his weakness against the moving ball and he will find it easier to rotate the strike with the field spread out. He can also attack the spinners from ball one.

I feel we need to replicate the t20I blueprint in ODIs and give it a try. Babar and Rizwan need to open in ODIs too with Fakhar coming at 3, and Maqsood at 4.

The likes of Maqsood, Khushdil, Asif etc. might be useful for a few slogs in T20Is but they don’t have the temperament for ODIs.

Thats why i had Fakhar at 3, instead of him being at his usual number 4. We can even move Hafeez at 4, and Maqsood at 5.

Asif, Khushdil are galli mohalla level players. Not even in my consideration.

What a champion player
Best wicketkeeper in the world
Can walk into any white ball team in the world....ahead of Babar azam.
Hard to believe player like Rizwan also have haters in Pakistan

Don't know about England but he is good enough to bat at no 4 for India..

India has plenty of options like Iyer, Kishan, SKY, Samson, Nitish Rana etc. who would outperform Rizwan in white ball cricket if you play them in the same team.

Indian cricket will have to hit the absolute rock- bottom to ever require the services of a Pakistani batsman.

You said Maqsood is more talented than the other two but I fail to see it. I think he's on par with them.

He is more talented but equally brainless and lazy. He has thrown away his career multiple times and looks like he will now do it again.

Could this be the secret?

He has improved in real-time under the pressure of Test cricket. certain individuals have the innate ability to respond to pressure by going up in performance, in this, it is quite rare for a Pakistani, especially a batsman to be able to do this. There are so many talented Pakistani players, who when faced with intense pressure fold like a pack of cards, especially when playing outside Asia. There are examples like Abid Ali who I don't think will cut it.

Someone with Rizwan's mental strength like this should be celebrated.

Rizwan can walk into any red or white ball team in the world. He is the best wicket-keeper batsman in the world.

Mohammad Rizwan 65* for KP in the national T20 Cup, doing what he does best.

What a way for Rizwan to show how good he is.

Remember Imad saying Walton was better? :))

Tough day for a certain Sharjeel Khan fan.

Rizwan has to be one of the most improved players in recent years. He deserves so much respect.

So the covid outbreak in the England set up means Rizwan will open the T20s against England's c team bowlers.

This guy is easily the luckiest person in the world for the past year or so! He has the best chance in the world to win the lottery if he actually plays it!

Today was also c team huh? Man just stop it from now on by hating on him. You re humiliating yourself.

Rana I hope you will give Rizwan a break now :))

I am one of the most patriotic Pakistan fans here

Instead of congratulating me, everyone is tagging me due to Rizwan’s brilliant innings

Need to take the hit mate. You've questioned Rizwan's ability despite the stellar performances he has put up. Instead, you backed an overweight fixer to outdo him.

I find if sad that you didn't see something so obvious and you will denigrate one of our few World class players. Riz is a brilliant player, the best WK in the world and top batsman.

Tbh

I deserve this humiliation because of Rizwan.

He was outstanding today, I can’t fault that.

That's the spirit and the right attitude...Haris Rauf made me eat humble pie today and I am loving it!

Some of those pull shots to Mo Shami were too scrumptious

Today Rizwan turned Shami into a Shami Kebab with ketchup and devoured him!

Love this guy. He is just so likeable. I would like Babar to play as a regular member in the team and Rizwan captaining the team full time in all formats.

Babar and Rizwan are keys if Pak has to go deep in this World T20.

He was out there laughing and joking, putting his team-mates at ease.

Exactly the sort of relaxed but determined character you want in your team.

Misbah talking about how when Rizwan started batting in top order he felt difficulty. SO they looked for a release shot. Under Shahid Aslam they practise the good length ball over the leg side which Rizwan hit today. That became his strength shot.

Misbah told that against England, they started placing fielder there, two fidlers and hoping Rizwan would not hit anything there. Misbah said to Rizwan that they are placing fielder there hoping that you would take a risk and hit it somewhere else, thus what Rizwan did he hit it over six over those fielders.

He finally got a chance to showcase his talent just like Iftikhar will if he is backed.

He's not being sent in to bat under inferior batsmen anymore.

It's no coincidence Khyber dominate the domestic scene so heavily. They have a legion of mentality monsters in their squad. They don't bow to pressure and are afraid of nobody.

His evolution has been brilliant, a good strike rotator, good timer of the ball and solid fitness. Add to the fact he is a good fielder. He played according to the situation and doesn't look stressed out.

I bet his teammates love him. He seems like such a happy, relaxed and chill person and doesn't seem to let anything faze him.

Not to mention his incredible performances speak for themselves. He's turned himself into one of the most important Pakistani batsmen across the formats. It also just shows, this is why you back players with great domestic performances because with enough chances, they will break through.

Rizwan is brilliant for pakistan Exactly the type of relaxed calm n classy guy pakistan needed Always smiling and so so hard working

Hes never under pressure n so so comfortable in his skin and his skills Hes just so good What a great guy to.have in the team and a inspiration for the youngsters

The guy is world class n a star for pakistan

Great fitness and a clean hitter. He is a world class batter. When was the last time both of our openers were world class?

His mentality and attitude is what has catapulted him to the top. There is not a hint of ego or arrogance in how he talks and conducts himself. He simply puts his head down, works for the team and is mentally unshakeable.

One of the most lovable guys in cricket these days. Does all the right things, says all the right stuff and carries himself like a man on a mission all the time. He is the trademark Pathan with a clean heart and happy face which bursts sincerity and ingenuity.

Absolute brilliance today. Not just his batting, keeping, fitness, game sense rather his whole demeanour and calmness alongside Babar which rubs off to the team as well.

A top-class player and a top-class individual. A natural leader and an asset for any team. Love to watch him bat, keep or just walk around the ground with his beaming smile.

It was fascinating to hear about his mindset from Misbah about how he perfected that shot he played against Bhuvneshwar for six. Top player
