[VIDEOS] How has Mohammad Rizwan managed to improve so much?

The way Rizwan has transformed himself in he last 1.5 years is truly astounding. Unprecedented in the recent history of Pakistan cricket to have a player who went from good to a world-class match-winner in such a short period of time.

Brilliant work from ICC's camera team to catch this.

Talent + hard work + clean habits + honest intentions = success

When you are fat and also a match-fixer, you will not have a career.

After an era of Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal and Sarfraz, Pakistan have finally found a competent keeper batsman.

The wrist work from Rizwan in playing the ball behind square wicket is incredible extremely strong wrists.

A humble character.you won't hear a single bad word from him an incredible character

Exactly. I cannot believe that people still harp over having that match-fixer Sharjeel in the team. Even if we ignore his fixing and fitness (hard things to do), he still doesn't hold a candle to what Rizwan has been producing.

Was listening to Misbah on the Pavilion show on Ten Sports and he told that Rizwan had practiced hours and hours and days over days to master that swat/pull shot that he does off a length ball. People think that this comes naturally and he's just good at playing the shot. But that's not the case. It was simply hard work and the discipline to learn that is bringing him success.

Rizwan is clearly the best thing that has happened to Pakistan in the last 3 years. We should be grateful to Misbah for sacking Sarfraz and installing Rizwan as an opener.

Everyone always knew that he was the fittest player in the team, an excellent wicket keeper and an excellent runner between the wickets. But his batting was his weaker spot. There was a time when everyone felt Sarfaraz was a better batsman than him. I remember Siqander Bakht making fun of Rizwan's selection where he claimed the team management was only selecting him because of his fitness rather than anyone real cricketing ability. He was most of all mocked for lacking a power game and for not being able to play classy cricketing strokes

How the tide has changed now. What did Rizwan really do to become the player he is today? Worked his backside of at the NHPC? Worked hard and consistently played domestic cricket to improve his game? Hire a batting coach, power hitting coach.

This guy is a great example for so many other players in the team on how to make the most of limited ability

I think he played his first game as a Batsman for Pakistan. When Sarfaraz was selected for Pakistan, Misbah (then captain) wasn't happy as he wanted a young Rizwan to play in his spot.

Also, Rizwan does not show any ego; he is down to earth.

He doesn't listen to criticism, he is humble and strives for excellence.

Such a good player we have found.

Pakistan's opening batsman Mohammad Rizwan, who has been in consistent form in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2021, achieved a major milestone on Tuesday (Nov 2) as he smashed 79 runs off just 50 balls to help Pakistan post a challenging total against Afghanistan. During his knock, Rizwan also surpassed Indian skipper Virat Kohli to become the second batsman to have scored most T20 runs in a calendar year.

While Kohli had scored 1614 runs in 2016, Rizwan has now scored 1661 runs and is just five runs short of explosive left-hander Chris Gayle - who occupies the top spot as he had scored 1665 runs in 2015. Rizwan is soon expected to break the world record.

Along with Babar Azam, Rizwan stitched yet another magnificent partnership for the first wicket as the two added 113 runs for the first wicket before Azam departed in the 14th over. Azam and Rizwan, who had added unbeaten 152 runs for the opening wicket against India in their opening match of T20 World Cup 2021, have now become the first pair to stitch five-century opening partnerships in T20 internationals.

Against Namibia, while both Rizwan and Azam found it difficult to score runs freely in the first ten overs, Rizwan once again carried his bat throughout the innings and changed gears in the death overs, with him scoring 24 runs off the final over bowled by JJ Smit.

Rizwan has been one of the major reasons behind the Men in Green's dominant show in the shortest format. In T20 World Cup 2021, Pakistan have sealed the semi-final spot with three successive wins against India, New Zealand and Afghanistan. Apart from being a prolific opener, Rizwan has also done an excellent job behind the wickets for Pakistan.

Lauding Rizwan's knock against Namibia, veteran Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Hafeez said after the match, "Good to have the momentum with us, our batters gave us the platform and we could go and express ourselves. He (Rizwan) is a fantastic player and in great form. After Babar got out, he had to bat deep and that's what he also planned. He got his rhythm back and was able to score quickly towards the end. We as a team wanted to score 175 but we got some more runs on the board. We wanted to test ourselves as we have chased down targets in the last three games. We wanted to put ourselves in tough situations as anything might happen in the next few games."

He has been very impactful.

Best LOI keeper-batsman in the world currently.

Special time at the moment for high-quality wk/batsmen:

BairstowRizwan
Pant
Mushfiqur

Pant and De Kock are overrated. Mushfiq is very poor now.

It is a competition between Butler and Rizwan. Rizwan wins due to superior keeping.

I was worried about how he was batting today in the first few overs.

He was struggling badly, footwork was poor and he couldn't time the ball. But as all very good batsmen do, he stuck in, didn't throw his wicket away and then found his touch in the latter overs.

Fabulous batting once again.

He has improved dramatically and is reaping the rewards. Does anyone think that Rizwan is a Pakistani version of N'Golo Kante? He's short, always smiling, doesn't complain about anything and just wants to play cricket.

Butler is a terrible keeper who should never be compared to Rizwan.

No doubt, Butler is a big time batsman, but then Rizwan is equally good or may be even better when it comes to all three formats.

I think it is impossible for any batter to look amazing every game. Rizwan has been performing for a long time now and has scored more runs than any other player in a calendar year, so not sure why all guns come out when he is having a bad day or few bad overs. Namibia bowled very well at the start of the innings and troubled both Rizwan and Babar. Rizwan is always facing the new ball and the first over can always do the trick if bowled well.

No Pakistani Cricketer in history has had the strength of character and the work ethic of Rizwan

Misbah credit Rizwan's penchant for learning and perfecting the pull shot/sweep/hoick whatever you may call it towards the leg side that he worked for days with Shahid Aslam solely on that shot from mid to late 2020.

The wicket was difficult early on, plus Namibia bowled really well with the new ball. Pakistan could easily have been 25/3.

Thats why Riz is on the top floor, and most are on the 5th floor and below.

Every person has a key driver in life. It seems like for Riz, its his faith.

Well, if you put it that way, then sure, faith certainly drives him.

I was referring to his improvement purely in terms of cricketing skills, which I thought was what OP was referring to. If a budding cricket, who looks up to Riz, is given that answer (i.e. faith), I am sure it would not really help him out. Faith likely helps him execute his skills and is more of a lever, but you need to have a solid foundation of skills and hard-work; without which faith isn't going to do much for you.

When you set high standards you will get critisied even if it's just for a few overs.

Speaking in a PCB video:

"As far as this record is concerned, I am more happy and proud that its one that is associated with my country"

"In the past whatever people used to say about me used to push and challenge me to do better"

"Something that was said not by me but by so many experts during the T20 World Cup was that our strength is that our batters don't give up our wickets and hold on to them and then hit 170 or so in conditions in Dubai which is very difficult"

"Yes, we were slow in Powerplays but it's about assessing conditions because even teams with really good power-hitters were finishing up on 40-45 in Powerplays and we were averaging around 40 and also did not throw away wickets"

Mohammad Rizwan "I am feeling much better than before when I was having difficulty breathing. I will start practice again from tomorrow as I've now had 2-3 days rest which was advised by the doctors"

I knew something was not adding up when the word ‘flu’ was bandied around. Anyone who has had the flu or understands what flu is, who know that flu confines one to a bed for ATLEAST 5 days. This was later changed to a chest infection? My father had a chest infection, was in ICU, and was diagnosed with left acute pneumonia.

Also, look at the picture of Rizwan in ‘ICU’ - NO TUBES!

If this was an attempt to play mindgames with the Aussies before the semi-final then it backfired royally! On the flip side if we are to believe what is said is true, there is no need to parade the picture of a sick player unless for sympathy votes.

Loss/loss.

Pakistan should really think out of the box here. If the team is to significantly improve over the next few years then it requires a reliable opener. Rizwan has done fantastic and should be given the responsibility across all 3 formats similar to the likes Rohit and KL Rahul. He is one off Pakistan best batsman and him at the top especially in test cricket will bring in more consistent in opening partnerships, and who knows maybe captaincy in the future.

With that said, he should not continue to wicket keep anymore, pak should look to try out a new player such as Rohail nazir or M Hasan.

Also Babar should bat at number 4 in all formats. So with that, you have the current best batman in PK batting in integral position.

Following on from my previous, if I was to pick my text XI with Rizwan opening without wicket keeping, the below will be team. It does not include a 5th bowling option such Faheem but I think with the left arm spin of Saud and Ghulam should easy cover it.

Rizwan
Azhar
Saud
Babar
Fawad
Ghulam
Rohail
Hassan
Nauman
Shaheen
Dahani

Against Oshane Thomas?

Even Iftikhar is smashing that rubbish bowler!

Iftikhar also smashed Starc, Cummins, Zampa etc in Australia, I guess that makes them rubbish bowlers too.

We could go round in circles for centuries with such futile arguments.

I admire your determination though, in mercilessly continuing a Rizwan agenda despite being humiliated time and again by a player who has >1200 T20I runs in a single calendar year.

"Sarfraz ke saath ziadti horahi hai"

I can not believe there are still people who are saying that Sarfraz with his averages like 15,16 and 17 in SENA deserves to be considered against this beast called Rizwan whose the mid-20s was wasted by Sarfraz.

Sarfraz got what he deserved.

His fitness levels were a joke and i bet he probably blames the pcb and not himself for what he has become. Even now the guy cannot bat and has only served waterboy duties.

Time for pakistan to work with someone like Mohammad Akhlaq as back up.

Its really annoying seeing Sarfraz still gets preference for the back up spot even though he cant even score runs now.

Because he has a gang of 3-4 journalists at his back who belong to the lobbyist clique from Pakistan cricket club PCC. This has to do with club-level lobbyism not the Karachi ethno angle as some like to believe, Rizwans biggest supporters are from Karachi too like Rashid Latif. The selection committee does not want to get under media pressure from these three men on TV so they keep Sarfraz in the squad. Otherwise, can anyone tell me how come someone with averages like 15, 16, 17 against good teams survive this long in 15 men squads?

Rizwan was a quality player even back in 2015, when he made his debut. He should have never been dropped in the first place, but specialist captain had to play. Rizwan is a talented player and a likeable person. May he keep on performing at this level for many years.

In white ball cricket Rizwan was pretty bad between 2015-19. He just didn't have a stable base when trying to hit big and was getting into awkward positions. The 2017 Australia ODI series was one example. His SR was around a run-a-ball in T20s before his shift to opening in NZ last winter.

He always performed superbly in domestic cricket but never translated that onto the big stage until now.

Rizwan is a rare example of a Pakistani player self-analysing his weaknesses, listening to advice, making the necessary adjustments and overcoming the doubters with sheer hard work.

Contrast him to a former has-been WK who cost us countless matches crying about being demoted in PSL category.

Rizwan in the post match conference today gave credit to Misbah, Waqar and Shahid Aslam who trusted him and worked on him...

Wonder where is Younis Khan now who says i can read eyes of players and know what they mean :inzi2

Misbah does deserve the credit of backing Rizwan and also having the foresight to push him up the order - no doubt about that.

"Sarfraz ke saath ziadti horahi hai"

I can not believe there are still people who are saying that Sarfraz with his averages like 15,16 and 17 in SENA deserves to be considered against this beast called Rizwan whose the mid-20s was wasted by Sarfraz.

Who says that?

A run-scoring machine.

No situation is too much for him. Just goes out there and does the business with no fuss or drama.

What a cricketer

Who cares !! 🙄 btw look @ the offside boundaries he hit today… & stop trolling as Sarfi ain’t coming back

Even someone in complete n utter denial over the last decade or so ala Kamran has finally publicly admitted his intl career is over such has been rizwans inpact lol

I expected him to replace Sarfraz with immediate effect due to the latter hiding down the batting order and just relying on his captaincy to win games (his wicket keeping was never that amazing to begin with). Initially, I assumed Rizwan to just be a tad better than Sarfraz and he comes across as a "busy" player in the side. I did not expect him to have such a meteoric rise, I feel that he's had the Rohit Sharma effect by opening the batting and completely transformed himself as a world class WK batsman, I knew his fielding (when he played as a specialist batsman) and wicketkeeping were outstanding but I never knew he would be a major pillar in the batting side. I love watching him bat. A Pakistani N'Golo Kante; both are short, smile all the time and just want to get on with things because they love sports. You cannot deny the comparison.
