Gary Kirstein in a pre game presser said following regarding the high voltage Pakistan India Clash
"I don't think I need to motivate these players for the upcoming game (they know it). we need individuals to have good performances but playing games like this, its a real team effort. its a big game, we are going to treat it as any other game but certainly we will give our best. the team is motivated
Fast bowling is our strength. it is important you cover all the basis. So, we gonna make sure we have spin options, good seam options and a deep batting lineup and i think most of the teams are trying to do so.
Well not to hide from the factor that it is a big game but to treat cricket like cricket should be treated. Every game you need to play well, your bowlers need to hit in the right areas, you need to score enough runs, and you need to take catches and field well. This is what we will try tomorrow. if we play good game of cricket we will have a chance of winning the game
on his approach ahead of the india's clash
The pitch is favorable for bowlers. the batters will have to play with courage, assess the conditions, assess what good score could be on this wicket if we bat first and then try to make a plan as the game unfolds to achieve a competitive target."
Gary Kirsten (Pakistan Coach) pre-match Press Conference - 8th June 2024
[Reporter:]
Pakistan's start has not been all that good. You have lost to new comers. Do you think we can regroup ourselves for tomorrow's match?
[Gary Kirsten:]
I hope so. Certainly, I hope so. We will give it our best shot.
[Reporter:]
Can you please confirm the availability of [inaudible] for tomorrow's match?
[Gary Kirsten:]
Yeah, he is fit to play tomorrow.
[Reporter:]
Yes, we know that Pakistan has not done well. The start was not well. But Pakistan has this strange kind of ability that they don't start well, but then they excel. We have seen this in the recent past. Do you expect this from the team right now, right now the way the team, do you think that they can bounce back, they have that ability to do that?
[Gary Kirsten:]
Yeah, I don't like to harp on history too much. We need to make sure we play the best cricket we can now. So tomorrow we're going to go out there and make sure we do the best that we can with our skill sets and how we can put pressure on the opposition. I mean that's what we would want to do every game. That's certainly how we would plan for every game. So, it's really up to us to get ourselves up for the game. It's a big game, India-Pakistan, we know there's no need for me to motivate the team anymore. They're well motivated, they're focused on this game. We've had to forget about the last couple of days and just move forward. That's the only way you can deal with life. Results are results, they take care of themselves. But the way we arrive at a match and pitch up and give it our best shot and make sure that our skills are up to where they need to be, that's all we can control.
[Reporter:]
Obviously, it's not ideal taking up [inaudible] so quickly before such a big event. In such a short time, how much have you understood what resources you have and how much of an input we can expect from you so soon?
[Gary Kirsten:]
Well, I've been with the team for 13 days, so it's early days for me, but it's been a real privilege to work with a Pakistan team. I've thoroughly enjoyed the players, they're lovely guys, they're giving their best for their country, and in the end, everyone's got a different way of playing the game. My job really is to understand that way and how it integrates into what we're trying to do as a team. So T20 cricket is a brutal game. As we know, the game changes very quickly, but you can be beneficial of that. You can either go through bad momentum very quickly or good momentum quickly. As we saw in the last game, we were pretty much out of the game for a long period of time and then we nearly won it in the end. So T20 cricket moves very quickly and we just need to be up to the task with our skills, our decision making, like any team would need to be.
[Reporter:]
Indian team, they are playing here. It will be their third match. They played one practice match and one World Cup match and tomorrow would be their third match here, but Pakistan, it would be their first. So, do you think it will give some sort of advantage to India? And how vital can be the toss tomorrow?
[Gary Kirsten:]
I'm not sure because I can't predict what's going to happen. I don't know whether it will be an advantage. Do you know? Will it be an advantage? Does that mean that because you've played more cricket here it's an advantage? Well, I don't know the answer. I don't know if it is an advantage.
[Reporter:]
I want to ask how is the – after the historical defeat the Pakistan team morale and any changes tomorrow?
[Gary Kirsten:]
We haven't finalised the team yet because we're waiting on a few players fitness wise. Yeah, that's all that needs to happen. We're going to go out and give it our best shot tomorrow.
[Reporter:[
You've coached India before. You've seen the India-Pakistan frenzy from that side before. How is it looking from this side?
[Gary Kirsten:]
The same. No, it's great. It's great to be part of, I certainly see it as a massive privilege to be part of these games. I've had, I think, two of them. So, it's great to be involved in this. Cricket doesn't get bigger than this. So, it's fun to be a part of. I think it's going to be a great occasion tomorrow. First kind of India-Pakistan game in America. It's been great being here in America on tour. I think it's one of the privileges of being involved in cricket for all of us, is that we get to travel the world in the name of cricket and see different places. So that'll be fun and a great occasion.
[Reporter:]
Do you bring any advantage, any inside info from...
[Gary Kirsten:]
That's a good question and the way I'd answer that is I think these players have seen enough of each other and how they play. In the end we want to make sure that we get our game right. Look at the conditions and what is required on the conditions because I think that's going to be a big play for tomorrow.
[Reporter:]
Gary, just on the theme of India vs Pakistan, the World Cup semi-final obviously that was a huge event all those years back and here it's like a league game all right but is the vibe any different from when it was 13 years back when you were in Chandigarh?
[Gary Kirsten:]
I'm not sure - yeah, I think it is. I think it is a little bit different because it's not in India or Pakistan. I went for a ride early this morning, which I like doing most mornings, and I certainly rode around the stadium a little bit and I kind of felt that there's going to be a good vibe there tomorrow. So that's going to be exciting for us all to have that many people that have come out to support the two teams.
[Reporter:]
During the last 48 hours, that defeat must have demotivated a lot of players. So, what was your message to the players to motivate them, to help them regroup ahead of this big match? How in the last 48 hours, what were your guidelines to these players?
[Gary Kirsten:]
It's never nice not winning games of cricket for any player. They're trying their best. It's never nice. I don't think I needed to motivate this team for this game. I think the important thing for us is that we operate genuinely as a team. Yes, we need individuals to make good performances, but playing games like this, I think is a real team effort. It's a big game, so we're going to treat it as any other game. But certainly, give it our best shot. The team's motivated. I mean, if that's what you're questioning, two days ago is forgotten. We can't take it back. It's gone. So, we move on.
[Reporter:]
Four top of the line fast bowlers, is that going to be your main weapon against Indian batting?
[Gary Kirsten:]
It certainly is a strength of ours. So, we like to look at that in the balance of our team. But I think it's important that you cover all the bases. So, we want to make sure we've got spin options good seam options and a deep batting lineup and I think most teams are trying to do that so however that stacks up we that's how that's what we aim for.
[Reporter:]
You've seen the expectations are very high when you were with India and in Pakistan also you have the same kind of -so what is your approach - especially with a pressure match?
[Gary Kirsten:]
Well not to hide from the fact that it's a big game, but to treat cricket like cricket should be treated. Every game you need to play well, you need to hit the ball in the right areas, you need to score enough runs, you need to take your catches and field well. I don't think it's ever changed the game. It changes a little bit because of the formats, but that's certainly what we're going to go out and try to do tomorrow. If we play a really good game of cricket with our abilities, we have a good chance of winning the game.
[Reporter:]
In every India-Pakistan match, it's always Pakistan bowlers versus Indian batters. But do you still believe Pakistan bowling lineup is better than Indian bowling lineup? I mean, India having Bumrah, Kuldeep, and Bindra?
[Gary Kirsten:]
That's a difficult question to answer. I think they're two great batting lineups.
[Reporter:]
Wicket looks dangerous for the batters. Even South Africa lost early four wickets in just three overs. So, our ex-cricketers and media says, is the wicket favourable for Pakistani bowlers? What is your opinion about the New York wicket?
[Gary Kirsten:]
I think it's just favourable for bowlers, full stop. Doesn't matter which team. For us, the batters are going to have to play with some courage in any team. Play with real courage, assess the conditions, assess what a good score could be on this wicket if we bat first, and then try to plan as the game unfolds to make sure we do what we can to get a competitive total. Bat first and bat second will be dictated by how we bowl.
