Regarded as a promising all-round option for Pakistan, Aamer Yamin has so far played 6 international games since his debut against Zimbabwe in 2015 and participated in all three editions of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) where he has represented Peshawar Zalmi and Lahore Qalandars.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Aamer Yamin spoke about his career so far and his hopes of performing well in the upcoming domestic season, the tough competition for the all-rounders slot in the Pakistan team, the advantages of playing in the PSL and his aspirations to make an international comeback.

PakPassion.net: How would you describe your career so far?

Aamer Yamin:
I feel that I have done fairly well based on the opportunities I have been given. I made a promising start to my international career in my debut ODI series against Zimbabwe in 2015 where I scored 62 and took one wicket in the 2nd ODI and then when I was selected for the series against New Zealand in 2018, I played one game in which I scored 32 runs and took one wicket. Later on in the T20I series against New Zealand (2018), I did really well taking one wicket whilst conceding just 25 runs. The fact of the matter is that whenever I have been given a chance to play for Pakistan, I have made sure that there is no lack of effort from my side.

PakPassion.net: It therefore must be a matter of great disappointment that your name did not feature in the latest list of central contracts published by the PCB?

Aamer Yamin:
I am naturally disappointed after learning that my name was not included in the list of players who were awarded central contracts by the PCB for 2018/2019. But, such is life and there are ups and downs along the way, so I am not too worried about this as I know that a player can be in and out of any team during the course of his career. What I am focusing on now, is to work hard and to keep my eyes on performing well in the upcoming first-class domestic season that starts on 1st September with the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. I'm hoping to do well in that tournament and catch the eye of the selectors with some excellent performances.

PakPassion.net: Having played in a few domestic seasons yourself, what is your opinion of domestic cricket in Pakistan?

Aamer Yamin:
I feel that the standard of domestic cricket has really improved over the years. In previous years, we had 16 departmental and 12 regional teams which have now been reduced to 8 teams each from both departments and regions. The quality of cricket has improved drastically as a result of this change and with the introduction of the drafting system, the level of competition has also gone up a few notches.

PakPassion.net: Do you think the PCB’s recent announcement regarding improvements in match fees for players will help in improving quality of cricket?

Aamer Yamin:
It goes without saying that having better financial rewards will lead to better performances by our cricketers as they will be more relaxed knowing fully well that their monetary needs are being looked after well by the PCB. There will be more motivation to perform better and I do believe that the changes made for this year are an excellent gesture by the PCB and will surely lead to improvements to the quality of cricket played in the country.

PakPassion.net: What sort of assistance have you had so far which could you in improving your game?

Aamer Yamin:
I have been working very hard on my batting and I'm also trying to increase the pace in my bowling as that can really increase my chances of playing international cricket again. In the past, Waqar Younis worked with me to help improve my bowling which was a great experience. I can also consider myself lucky that during the PSL tournaments, Aaqib Javed helped me to fix issues with my bowling during my time with the Lahore Qalandars. I am also indebted to Pakistan bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, who helped me improve my slower deliveries and in the process, I learnt about 3 variations of this sort of a delivery. Unfortunately, I am no longer part of the Pakistan team at the moment but God Willing, I hope I get another chance to work with Azhar Mahmood and improve my skills further.

PakPassion.net: Do you feel that you have a chance to make a comeback in the Pakistan team as an all-rounder, given the presence of the likes of Faheem Ashraf and Shadab Khan?

Aamer Yamin:
Let me start by saying that I am proud of the fact that Pakistan is blessed with some excellent talents like Faheem Ashraf who was recently declared as the PCB’s emerging player of the year, and Shadab Khan who has performed brilliantly for Pakistan. As far as my situation is concerned, I feel that one can only prove himself and also improve as a player if given chances to play at the highest level. I can assure everyone that I have always endeavoured to make the most of any chance given to me. It doesn’t matter if it is a high-profile domestic game or if it’s a local club, I put in my best efforts to perform to the best of my abilities and will prove to the world that I am an outstanding all-rounder.

PakPassion.net: How has your experience been at the PSL?

Aamer Yamin:
I have taken part in all three editions of the PSL but unfortunately, I have not been able to perform that well in this tournament. I played two matches for Peshawar Zalmi in the first edition of the PSL and then in 2017 I became a part of the Lahore Qalandars and played three games. In the 2018 edition of the PSL, I played just two games for Lahore Qalandars but could not take any wickets which was very disappointing. But, I do know that a good performance in the PSL can do wonders for your career and this is why I am targeting much better performances in the next edition of this tournament. My intention is to give my best for any team that picks me for this tournament and to help them win PSL 4.

PakPassion.net: What were the reasons for Lahore Qalandars' below-par form in the PSL in 2018?

Aamer Yamin:
The Lahore Qalandars squad was an excellent one, but I feel that it was just a matter of some bad luck in the 2018 tournament as we lost games from winning positions. Regardless of the how they performed in the tournament, the fact remains that Lahore Qalandars have done a great job in discovering and introducing new talents into Pakistan cricket and for that I would like give credit to Aaqib Javed and the team management for their tireless efforts. I do hope that Lahore Qalandars will perform better in the next edition of the PSL and will end up as tournament winners.

PakPassion.net: How important is the advent of the PSL for Pakistan cricket?

Aamer Yamin:
There is no doubt in my mind that the PSL has played a key role in introducing and refining our talent. The likes of Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman and Faheem Ashraf are all products of this tournament and I am sure more such names will emerge as a result of future editions of this tournament. Each game in PSL is of high quality and provides experience similar to international games for the players. As a player, you get the chance to share the dressing room with world-class players which is a great learning exercise for any cricketer. Personally speaking, I learnt a lot from our senior international players as they showed me how they handle pressure and gave me great insights as to how to read the game.

PakPassion.net: You are 28 years old now; you must feel that time is running out to make a comeback to the Pakistan team?

Aamer Yamin:
I am a firm believer that if you are fit enough, you can play until the age of 40 as well, as has been demonstrated by Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan. I do realise that a fast-bowler has a relatively shorter shelf-life and it’s rare to see bowlers play past the age of 35. In my view, it's only when you get to the age of 30 that you can consider yourself a seasoned cricketer as by that time you have gained valuable experience and are better equipped to handle pressure. Only after playing a good few domestic seasons can one be in a position to be called a proper cricketer, so I am not too bothered about my age but instead I am focusing on gaining as much experience as I can which could help me play for Pakistan again.

PakPassion.net: Does the idea of playing league cricket around the world interest you?

Aamer Yamin:
I have a lot of interest in playing in international leagues as I feel that such competitions provide excellent experience in different playing conditions. Last year I represented the Bengal Tigers in the inaugural edition of the T10 League in the UAE and hopefully I will get another chance to play in this league in the next edition which is to be played in December of this year. I am also on the lookout for opportunities to play in other leagues so let's see how it goes in the future.

PakPassion.net: Do you feel that you still have the skills to make a comeback to the Pakistan side?

Aamer Yamin:
I am a very positive person and I have high hopes of making a comeback to the Pakistan team in the near future. I understand that this is easier said than done so I am prepared to work doubly hard to achieve this goal. I am hoping to put in some solid performances in the upcoming domestic season and I would like all my well-wishers and fans to pray for my success and to know that I will never let them down and will do whatever is needed to play for Pakistan once again.

Tough for him to make an entry into a team which looks well settled but hope he does well in the upcoming season and also in PSL.

Think he will find it hard to get in the team with Fahim already there. Fahim is clearly a better bowler with much more armory than Amir. Amir seems like a Sri Lankan medium pacer of yesteryears, medium pace and all that. Needs to improve all facets of his game to get a call up I feel. I feel that he is not a lower order hitter that we think he is. But then, he hasn't really scored a lot of runs to get a chance for him to be tried in top 6.

He and Sahibzada Farhan should've been picked for the Zimbabwe series to be tested out before the Asia cup.

Didn't really deserve to be dropped but I get this feeling that his bowling is too soft and would get hammered by good opening batsmen like Dhawan or Roy. Fahim is way better as a bowler but needs to work on his lower order hitting.

Should've never been dropped.

However, Fahim has improved considerably and is a much better bowling option than Yamin, which puts him ahead of the latter overall.

I wouldn't mind Yamin as a squad option, though. I believe all 3 of Yamin, Fahim, and Shadab can coexist in the same XI in T20Is.

Have always liked Aamer Yamin. He comes across as humble, an honest trier and someone who believes in hard work. He comes across well in this interview and bears no grudges despite his ill-treatment.

He has been harshly treated throughout his career. Why was he dropped after performing on his debut? Why wasn't he given a go in tests when Pakistan desperately needed a seam-bowling all rounder?

Re PSL, he is wasting him time at LQ. He should move to a team like MS who desperately need an all-rounder- he will play every game there.

With all that said Faheem has obviously jumped ahead of him but it is always useful to have a back up. Wish him all the best.

p.s. Faheem is not a PSL product!

Surprised he missed out on a central contract, but he faces stiff competition to get back into the Pakistan team especially with Faheem Ashraf doing so well and improving at a rapid rate.

He needs to stay in contention - opportunities will arise soon. We cannot afford him to drift away.

He's a solid allrounder, someone who should be around the LOI teams. He's a great subsitute for Faheem. Also his fitness looks impressive.

Aamer Yamin deserves more chances at international level

Their is always someone that it can be said is unfairly treated by the PCB. But I want to raise one point here. Our test team is struggling badly. Yet, we are unaware that Yamin averages 40 at almost a strike rate of 80 in FC, with a double ton as well. All this batting at number 8! Of course, we all know he can bowl as well and averages 25 with the ball in FC.

I personally think his bowling is nothing to write home about, but he seems a decent, gritty batsman and so far averages 95 in odis. With shafiq and Sarfraz struggling for consistency, I reckon Yamin needs to be included to aid the shaky batting lineup.

He has been treated unfairly. He is the best all rounder we have, he should have been groomed properly.

He's behind Faheem Ashraf in the pecking order, I just hope Aamer Yamin gets a chance in the PSL

Aamer Yamin on the bench whole season of the BPL

He is a good all-rounder. I know his team has some very accomplished foreign players and it is hard for him to break into the squad. His management should release him if they are not going to give him a chance and let him play the grade two tournament.

Surely he would have been picked to be given a chance. I feel for him on the bench.

So many so-called all rounders around these days for Pakistan, but not one has it in them to even fluke their way to a 100, a rapid fire 70 or get a 5- wicket haul now and again..

To be honest we havent produced any batsman never mind any allrounders..i think they need to keep investing in Faheem and give him lots of batting practice as i dont see any other option

Interestingly, Aamer Yamin averages higher with the bat in FC cricket than Azhar Ali. One heck of a statistical anomaly...

We unfortunately have a rich history of banking on wrong players and even persisting with them when the writting is on the wall.

A classic bits n pieces player, conveniently called allrounders in Pakistan.

Faheem Ashraf's pathetic LOI performances this series have opened the door for Yamin, he should be motivated now to do well in upcoming domestic tournaments

Faheem is a specialist bowler and not an allrounder. He had plenty of different opportunities to show off his batting talent and never delivered.

Either play faheem as a normal bowler or look for a real allrounder.

God here we go again..... Why are we obsessed with bits and pieces players.... Why can't we try to find genuine batsman and bowlers to do their job in their specialties. I am talking about Tests and ODI's where if your specialist did their job than no need to rely on these so called all rounders. In tests and to a lesser degree in ODI's I would play 6 specialist batsman, 1 keeper and 4 bowlers. In both format I would expect few of these batsman to bowl couple of overs if and when needed. Now in ODI these batsman bowlers might leak few extra runs than a regular bowler but you hope they make it up with their batting. We can't rely on these bits n pieces players to do either job properly.

His batting is better than Faheems. I would rather have his batting than Faheems batting or bowling.

Someone tell Yamin to give up bowling please, his batting is so good. He should focus on batting and he can easily replace hafeez at number 6 in Odis.

It is surprising that our bits and pieces player look better than our actual batsmen (hafeez, malik, hammad, yamin, Hassan mohsin)

Not the greatest bowler but not the worst either as a batsman and fielder he pretty good hoping he can have a good PSL

Yamin has made himself the glue of Karachi Kings. Very solid and consistent performer.

Mickey finally realising his worth...

He's been brilliant with the bowl and the bat. I'm hoping he's in the team against Aus and hopefully goes to the world cup.

Mickey is such a terrible judge of talent

Yamin would have been a perfect investment because he’s actually a batsman and uses new ball better than many in PCT. it’s a travesty that he never was given a consistent run despite being decent enough in chances given

He is still not the answer. His dibbly dobblies will be dispatched to the boundary more often than not, and he is at best a decent batsman.

Much better than faheem though

He actually swings the new ball so can provide good 5-6 overs upfront

Rubbish to be replaced by another rubbish. Story of the team for over two decades. It's natural because he's filling the shoes of the mighty Faheem Ashraf.

The train has left the station. The term fast bowling all rounder is not understood correctly in Pakistan.

It depends if he has a brain. Stoinis of Australia has shown that if you have good control combined with clever use of the slower ball you can be highly effective even in the death overs. He has been bowling yorkers very well and has become a key bowler for Aus.

Agree with Rizvi that Yamin can actually swing the new ball, whether he has the rest of the tools necessary only time will tell, but he deserves a chance now.

The forgotten AR. He is the best one we have in domestic. He bowls good sith new ball as well and is certainly better with bat than Faheem

50 for Aamer Yamin on Day 2 of Round 4 of QeA 2019

112* at the moment for Southern Punjab versus Sindh.

Having a good season with the bat so far. 4 innings, 290 runs with a hundred and 2 fifties.

If he was taking wickets then the pressure would increase on Faheem.

I still feel he needs to offer more with the ball to make it in international cricket.

He gets good shape with the new ball, so he can be utilized in that role of opening the bowling in sub continental conditions and that will allow us to play two specialist spinners when required. He is a good batsman to bat at no 7 and then someone like Zafar and Shadab as specialist spinners can provide the batting depth.

However in overseas conditions we dont need two specialist spinners, one along with Imad is fine. So in those conditions if he wants to play he needs to prove himself as a bowler.

He needs to be selected for future tours has the ingridents to have success he is not world class but he is very solid all arounder something Pakistan can use

All he needs to do is bowl 10 steady overs a day. If he can bowl 10-12 overs at 3 an over his job is done, he doesn't need to take wickets.

Forget about Fawad Alam and Saud Shakeel, the real injustice is with this guy. He performed everytime he has been given an opportunity, he is making runs in domestic, yet Faheem, who isn't even good eneough to play 2nd XI, makes it ahead of him everytime. Yamin's batting is good enough to bat at 6 for Pakistan, he can replace Shafiq, then Rizwan should replace Sarfaraz and bat at 5.

Pakistan have the players to be a top 3 team, but our selectors are always incompitent and people actually defend the selectors. Yamin deserves a call up in at least t20i and tests. He should play ODIs outside Asia. The new system has no point if the selector is useless and pick worthless players like Umar Akmal, Shehzad and Faheem.

Yamin is the batting allrounder Pakistan need right now. If he is in the team we can play an extra pace bowler.

Should carry on performing well so he can replace Faheem. Getting sick of him now

142 runs as batsman 6 wickets (2-26 & 4-23) - Superb all-round performance in Southern Punjab vs Sindh

That's what you call an all rounder. An allrounder is not 1/50 and 20 runs (Faheem).

This train has left the station now. Time to look elsewhere. He was never good enough to play in international cricket.

He would've been a much better investment than Faheem Ashraf.

Needs to be selected for Australia this year and then England next year.

His batting has really improved by a huge margin these days.

His bowling just lacks a yard of pace but he's no worse than Faheem Ashraf.

Match winning performance in QAE trophy. He surely would have won us some matches if he would have played as many matches as Faheem Ashraf.

Yes he lacks pace but he does swing the new ball and if not more atleast as good a swing I have seen any current Pak bowler do consistently. He can provide much needed stability to the squad combination and will allow Pak to play two specialist spinners in Sub continent or against the sides like Aus, SA, Eng, NZ which can struggle against decent spin while he will be batting at no 7.

always rated him higher than all of the useless so called all rounders in our team.

He's better than Faheem Ashraf hands down

He is at the moment.

One has worked hard on areas of his game that he needed to work on, whilst the other has been sat in the comfort zone taking his place for granted.

His batting has really improved by a huge margin these days.

His bowling just lacks a yard of pace but he's no worse than Faheem Ashraf.

He's not even that slow, he is usually in the 130-135 range which is good enough for 10-15 overs a day.

Too bad for him, Misbah will not allow players with credentials to play for pakistan. He will be the fawad Alam of all rounders.

This guy should have been in the team already for 4 years. Competing with stokes and holder for the best all rounder position.

How ashraf delayed yamins career by 2-3 years is beyond absurd. But I guess beyond absurd is the best description for pcb selectors over the last 6 years

33 of 20 with the bat and 15/1 in 2 overs today.

Hoping that he'll continue to perform and gets a call in the team.

According to him, he has been running on sand to increase his bowling pace. The good thing is he is keen to improve himself in all facets.

Shouldn’t be holding any hopes with Misbah in charge.

His FC stats are impressive. Can't believe he hasn't played Test cricket till date. We should seriously consider him as a batting all rounder at number 6.

I still remember the phainta he got from Pollard to lose the match for LQ. Thanks but no thanks.
