India's influence in world cricket has grown exponentially, transforming from a once-marginalized nation to the sport's financial epicenter. The recent Cricket World Cup highlighted India's commanding position, with accusations of favoritism in scheduling and venue selection to maximize viewership and revenue.

India contributes 80-85% of the ICC's annual earnings, giving the BCCI unprecedented control and BCCI also takes back the largest share of ICC’s earnings (38.5 per cent). This power affects big tournaments, bilateral series, and even the cricket boards in other countries, especially Pakistan.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become a global phenomenon, attracting top talent and generating massive revenues. Its success has further solidified India's position in world cricket.

India's rise from paying guarantee money in the 1980s to its current status is remarkable. Key factors include:
  1. According to the data available, India has more than 1.12 billion mobile users, which makes up about 79% of its population. Most of these are smartphones. Additionally, there are 230 million households with televisions in India.
  2. Smart marketing of tournaments since Jagmohan Dalmiya won the ICC elections in 1997
  3. Good financial management and negotiation skills by the BCCI
Now, India is so important to the ICC and other cricket boards that it often influences decisions about tournaments, where games are played, and games between two countries. While some people criticize this power, it’s clear that India now has a big role in a game it once had little recognition in.

Yes please ask China to dominate cricket and compete with India. They too have the numbers

I don't understand the point of bashing India for making money from there own country. Cricket is a hugely followed sport, we spend our own money running it, across the length and breadth of the country. To run and manage 38 teams, 1000s of players etc is country like India no mean feat. Learn from there management to improve yourself.

It is more of a lesson for Pakistan to learn than a trolling attempt.

India made its name by working hard and improving day-by-day. Cannot take anything away from them in this regard.

Pakistan needs to have some sort of stability in PCB. Some needs to grow a pair, and get this ridiculous Patron in Chief concept to the bins of history. Give one guy a go, give him clear KPIs and objectives and let him run cricket independently for 4 years. Things will start falling in place. Talent and interest is there.

The worst thing about India's monoply over cricket has been disenchantment of players from National duty. And now it remains to be seen how they respond to CT 2025 being held in Pakistan

Absolutely right. Not just for the PCB to learn, but ICC as well and the rest of the boards.

The situation screams for a change in the current setup. The ICC needs to change. They need to change their revenue model. The other boards too need to change. Get more self sufficient.

But all of this takes hard work, sacrifices. It can be done. BCCI have demonstrated that. Are any one of the boards or the ICC willing to do this. Especially when they can just sit back and let the BCCI money fall into their laps.

Nothing is stopping Pakistan or any other country to monetize cricket as much as they can monetize. It is not India’s fault that the administrations of some (not all) countries are miserable failures. This is unnecessary shaming of India and BCCI for its success.

I believe cricket world has been harmed by BCCI's petty politics and actions driven by greed.

Cricket world was far more appealing before BCCI started to dictate things.

Our biggest fault was to bring Bangladesh into international cricket.

The worst minnow nation ever to play cricket by far.

Ya’all, we are sorry for lowering the quality of cricket.

I would contend that the ICC and other boards are the ones driven by greed. Add to that a lot of selfishness.

They don't as much lift a finger against the BCCI. Because they want all that BCCI $$$$ fall into their laps. Why? Because it gets them money with zero effort on their part. So they are perfectly fine with what BCCI does. As long as they get their share of $$$.

Absolute greed on the part of ICC and all the other boards.

Did you first realise this on March 17th, 2007? :inti

I think cricket eras can be divided into 3 eras.

1) Legacy era (pre-1975 cricket).
2) Golden era (1975 till 2007).
3) Fruitcake era (2007 till present).

IPL and T20 initiated the fruitcake era and it has been a disaster since then.

We need a brand new era. For that to happen, BCCI's influence needs to be reduced.

They are doing it in Olympics. Will that be enough? :inti
India obviously isn't good in olympics. But hear this out. The 4 most popular mens team sports in the world are Football, Cricket, Basketball, field hockey in that order. India is the world champion in one and an Olympic bronze medalist for the second time in a row in another. China sucks in all 4. So yeah, we aren't a dud in sports. Our investments just go to different sports compared to China.

Cricket & Hockey are not really that popular outside the subcontinent. Volleyball is more popular than either of them

Football, volleyball, basketball are the most popular team sports in terms of nations involved. After that cricket & rugby

Google it. Europe, Australia and Asia are power houses in hockey. Heck, Chinese women's team won a silver in olympics. They play the sport too but their men suck at it. Bottom line is Chinese men suck at team sports. They probably made more investments in the last 10 years than anyone in football and they still suck. Their basketball, volleyball teams are subpar as well. So the bottom line is numbers matter but not that much. A country like Spain dominates in football, hockey and basketball and their population is miniscule compared to China and India.

European sides & Australia do well in hockey but its not really that popular. Mostly played by college kids or working professionals on weekends while doing their day job on weekdays. Like Saurabh Netravalkar plays cricket in the USA

Holland won gold in both men's & women's hockey at Paris but ask any random Dutch guy to name a hockey player - he will struggle

But yes China does poorly in team sports for men's events. They do fairly well in women team sports. Probably something to do with their culture

Volleyball must be recognised and played in all countries of the World but is it watched and followed with same passion like Cricket and Rugby ? Are there any Volleyball leagues that have money involved like IPL or NBA ?

Just found that there is event called Volleyball World Cup which was last held in 2019. Only 12 teams and very poor average attendance of 2310 only.

World Cup is big only for football, rugby & cricket. Many sports don't have World CUp but that does not mean anything

Like there is world cup for basketball but nobody bothers. NBA is gold standard for basketball. Also there are many popular leagues in Europe. Same for volleyball. No world cup but there are popular leagues in many countries. Top volleyball players earn upwards of 1 million USD - that's unthinkable for many sports including cricket ( outside of IPL)

Let me give u an example. Think of 100 countries. Ask 1 person from each of those countries about cricket, rugby, basketball, volleyball. U will see basketball & volleyball will be known to almost everyone. Rugby to fair chunk of them. BUt cricket will be known to max 10-12 nations.

Technically prior to IPL, Indian too was at the mercy of ICC and England/AUS cricket board who ran things. All 3 Asian countries (apart from SL - less population) had the potential to do what India did to become a powerhouse. Cricket is followed by so many people in pak/ind/bd, but india saw an opportunity and jumped on it.

Look at both PSL and BPL, mostly ran incompletely. Not saying the BCCI board members are all saints but most wants to not only benifit their pockets but to see Indian cricket improve and get more power. Where as both bcb and PCB wants to line their own pocket for personal financial growth and self power rather than focus more on cricket growth.

IPL surplus is more than the PCBs annual budget. Let that sink in. The fact is bcci is sustaining cricket in all the Associates and low revenue nations and even 30-40% of pcb revenue which Rameez raja himself accepted. So with respect to the coming champions trophy- it is delusional to even think that the tournament will go ahead without ind and even more delusional to think that pak will host it by substituting SL instead of Ind.

Bcci and ind cricket worked up their way to where they are now the hard way to be the financial powerhouse with nobody else as a competitor from a revenue generating standpoint

There are hockey clubs in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. Thats the reason for their domination as these are professional clubs. It's not college kids as you claim. How many names of volleyball players do you know?

The one child policy for decades meant male narcissistic kids don't gel with others in a team environment. Also, the Chinese are robots in sports with pre determined moves. Hence their dominance in diving, weight lifting etc.

Ipl is the best things that's happened for the growth of cricket. Be grateful.

Hampshire agree 'dream' takeover by IPL group

Hampshire have signed a deal with Delhi Capitals co-owners the GMR Group to finalise a takeover of the County Championship club.

The agreement - which has been ratified by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) - makes Hampshire the first county to be owned by an overseas franchise.

GMR - which has wholly or jointly-owned Indian Premier League side Capitals since the IPL's inception in 2008 - initially agreed the deal for the Southampton-based club a year ago.

The parties have agreed a "phased acquisition" which will see GMR take an immediate majority stake and aim to complete a 100% takeover in the next two years.

"This is the fulfilment of a dream for me and, I hope, for all Hampshire Cricket supporters," said Rod Bransgrove, the club's majority shareholder.

“After a thorough selection process, we chose GMR as our partners due to their shared values and commitment to our vision. We believe it is the perfect organisation, with the right people, to build on our proud legacy.

"Becoming the first English cricket club to join an international cricket group will open exciting new opportunities as we embrace the globalization of this great sport."

The deal is solely for control of Hampshire and does not relate to the Hundred or the Southampton-based Southern Brave franchise in any way.

Under the new ownership structure, Hampshire's existing leadership team will remain in place.

Bransgrove - who announced last year he would step down as Hampshire chairman after 23 years - will now continue as group chairman until at least 30 September 2026, while David Mann retains his role as group chief executive officer.

Bransgrove arrived at the club in 2000 when it stood on the brink of bankruptcy.

His investment helped Hampshire relocate from Northlands Road in Southampton, the club's home of 116 years, to the Utilita Bowl on the edge of the city, while the club has been awarded an Ashes Test in 2027 - a long-term goal for Bransgrove.

GMR holds a 50% stake in the Delhi Capitals (IPL and Women's Premier League), the Dubai Capitals (International League T20) and South Africa T20 side Pretoria Capitals (SA20) as well as investing in USA Major League Cricket club Seattle Orcas.

Grandhi Kiran Kumar, corporate chairman of GMR Group, said: "What initially attracted me to Hampshire was the way it was run by Rod Bransgrove, whose leadership ethos closely mirrors that of the GMR Group.

"I believe [we are] in the best position to carry Rod's legacy forward and continue building on the strong foundation he has established."

The deal comes with an immediate but undisclosed cash injection to reduce Hampshire's debt position and improve facilities at the stadium, the adjoining hotel and golf course, which are owned by Hampshire Sport & Holdings Group Ltd.

Richard Gould, ECB chief executive officer, said: "This is an exciting time for Hampshire, and I'd like to welcome GGPL [GMR Global Pte Ltd] to cricket in England and Wales.

"I am pleased to see their commitment to continuing to develop Hampshire's cricket teams and pathways and enhance facilities at Utilita Bowl, and their respect for the traditions of the game in this country.

"This announcement also demonstrates the global interest in investing in cricket in England and Wales, and underlines the continuing appeal of county cricket.

"I'd like to thank Rod Bransgrove for all he has done in transforming Hampshire and creating a world-class stadium, and look forward to continuing to work together in his role as group chair."

What nonsense , insane how ECB is allowing this , you are not USA that requires cricket to be marketed..future of England cricket and football to be divided between India and Arabs/Americans corporations and rich people.

BCCI Gets Richer, Bank Balance Jumps To Eye-Popping Rs 20,686 Crore In FY 2024

BCCI’s healthy bank balance got healthier this year with an approximate increase of Rs 4200 crore, taking the overall earnings to a whopping Rs 20,686 crore.

A major chunk of BCCI’s revenue comes from the IPL media rights and bilateral cricket rights.

With India being the biggest cricket market in the world, the powerful board also gets a lion’s share of revenue generated by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Back in June 2022, the IPL media rights were sold for an astronomical Rs 48,390 crore for a five-year period.

“The cash and bank balance of BCCI has increased from Rs 16,493 crores in FY2023 to INR 20,686 crores in FY 2024. This is an increase of approximately INR 4,200 crore," read a BCCI document in possession of PTI.

The board was projected to earn Rs 7,476 crore in FY23-24 but the actual income stands at Rs 8,995 crore. The general fund also increased from Rs 6,365 crore to 7,988 crore.

In the FY24-25, the BCCI is expected to earn Rs 10,054 crore with the total budgeted expenditure set at Rs 2,348 crore.

BCCI’s 38 state units rely heavily on the board’s annual grants and as per the document, the budgeted amounts due to the associations stand at Rs 499 crore.

Just highlights how cricket is a relatively minor sport where one country and it's supporters probably make up 85% of the fanbase.
