[VIDEOS] Is Andre Russell one of the most 'naturally talented' cricketers of all time?

Lol!

My bad but I missed a word (i.e. 'he') in my original post. I wanted to ask how Russell is bowling in the IPL. He was way below 100% during the PSL.

I got that. Don't think he is used much. KKR always has about 6 or 7 bowlers. Based on the conditions they will completely ignore a spinner or a seamer

IPL 207 runs from 77 balls.

PSL 50 runs at an average of 12.50

Of course he was saving himself for IPL, what is the point bashing noname bowlers of a lower tier league with empty stadiums and peanut salaries?

Yes PSL has great quality bowling when Kamran Akmal is the second highest scorer in 2019 and leading run scorer in the history of PSL.

Kamran Akmal, Delport, Ingram and Imam ul haq were among the top 5 Batsmen in 2019 PSL. Legends.

In my 18+ years of watching cricket I have never seen anyone with a better hand-eye coordination than Russel. Better than Sehwag, Dhoni Prime, Afridi and ABD. Probably the best power hitter in the history of the game.

Not sure better than Sehwag. But this guy relies on brute power as well. Sehwag relies on bat speed.

To be fair everyone becomes a super batting talent in IPL. We have seen him in PSL multiple seasons. Those same super batting talents can hardly score any runs in PSL or international cricket.

Yeah because only ATGs like Kamran Akmal can score in PSL - Kamran Akmal is the All Time Highest Scorer in the history of PSL :)))

IPL is all about batting nothing for bowlers, Andre is a good hitter maybe the best right now but this paisa league is all about who can hit these trundler further

I'm certain Kamran would easily score multiple 150+ runs in an inning in IPL. Which is pretty much a stick cricket at this point.

Do they take it seriosly ? Or just there to make some easy money ? Better fire them aint it?

Of course they take it seriously. Which player doesn't want to score runs and be loved by fans, and become in demand? These guys are professionals, saying that they don't take cricket seriously is disrespectfully to them. When Mccullum kept failing in PSL no matter what he did, do you think Mccullum was not serious? Whole Lahore qalandar's management and fans were relying on him and he gave it everything he had but it didn't work, and you could tell how frustrated he was.

Even people play street cricket they give it their best to win, and these are professionals-so yes they do take it seriously.

But there is a lot more at stake with IPL. You could lose close to million after one bad season. What about guys like Pollard, Watson, Munro failing in the IPL? lol In T20 players failures also depend on the team they play for. Even the great suer stars always didn't produce match winning performances for teams like RCB. Onus is on the team management to extract the best out of them. All West Indian cricketers can banish any bowler in the world. Russell smashed guys like Rabada Morris, Southee, Stoinis, Lamichane all international bowlers for their team.

When batting becomes easy even mediocre players can out perform the best players in the world. If batting was difficult or at least not easy in IPL then most batsmen wouldn't score as often as they do with such ridiculous SRs. Then, you would see players like Kohli and ABD, who are no doubt at the very top, out perform other batmen and win their team a lot more matches. They would be much more successful because they do have the quality to play in difficult batting conditions.

It won't be "easy" for just one batsman not others. Even the easiest of the esaiest conditions you can't see anyone scoring like Russell. Brathwhite hit four sixes off of Stokes in T20 final. He is an inferior batsman to Russell in many ways. West Indian batsmen can murder any bowler on their day. Forgot how Jason Mohmmad a virtual nobody smashed Amir all over in the one dayer?

Getting the better of Amir isn't a big achievement. Amir is averaging 72 this year and he averaged 100 in 2018.

I was waiting for Russell to have "his day" in PSL, that didn't happen, but i'm glad he is doing well in IPL.

He smashed Hasan ali as well in the same match.

Russel is a T20 beast. His hitting ability is phenomenal no doubt.

Pretty much all West Indian players are cut above the rest when it comes to big hitting. Proper channelization, percentage cricket is what missing. Once they have a shrewd captain they can get the best ouf of these guys. Ofcourse their bowling has to step up. One good bowler they have they are going to lose him to England.

Today it was dud captaincy by Kohli. Ball was turning for Negi who had figures of 2/20 in 3 overs. Even local boys struggled to read his turn. Negi would have definitely got him out.

Russell at highest level.

IPL has international class bowlers. Your telling me unknown bowlers in the PSL are better than the likes of Rabada,Boult ,Starc,Johnson,Malinga (at his peak),Bumrah,Rashid Khan?

You live in a world of delusion and green tinted glasses my friend.

That is the problem of West Indian team not being able to use his big hitting prowess. Hetmyer who slammed so many sixes in the recent India series and later England series couldn't buy run playing for RCB.

Gambhir played a lot of role in shaping him. Gambir gave a role to each player and they stuck to that role

You can see Russell's stats in IPL. Even after Gambhir left, they are still using him for the same role. He is clear about his role. He is sticking to it.

when he played for Delhi DareDevils

4 innings 58 runs 14.50 avgerage 145 SR

when he played for KKR

38 innings 1039 runs 33.5 aveerage 192 SR

Russell's innings today was probably the best t20 cameo I've seen, Kohli and co. looked absolutely helpless. This year's IPL has been very entertaining

I'm not telling you anything about PSL bowlers, i'm telling you a simple fact about Russell-he averages like 12 in PSL and 17 in international cricket with highest score of 47. Therefore, like many other international and PSL "failures" or mediocre players, his performance is hardly anything to jump up and down about-when all things are considered. He does it when it's easy but he couldn't do it when it wasn't so easy to spank bowlers.

So .... Many internationally successful players flunked in IPL, many did well in PSL has flunked in IPL, Many that were cast aside in internationals are doing well in the PSL. You cannot pick one player who didn't make an impact there and use him as a reference. I see lof pak fans complaining about PSL pitches where average bowlers look good. You are turning the plate and using it to hype the same average bowlers based on Russell's outing there.

It has to do with the UAE pitches and not the standard of bowling in PSL. Power-hitters like Russell are not cut for the sluggish UAE wickets.

He would be brilliant in a venue like Karachi where teams were able to post 200+ multiple times. The notion that the standard of bowling in PSL is higher is a myth.

PSL bowling attacks will get decimated on IPL pitches frequently just as they were decimated in Karachi. The UAE leg of the PSL is as easy as it gets for bowlers in T20 cricket.

In 2014, when quite a few IPL matches were held in the UAE, the average scores were quite low and similar to the ones in PSL.

Russell is class. Who cares if he scores in PSL or not ?

Andre Russell’s fitness

Watching Dre Russ in the IPL, he has gotten so big physically that he almost looks like a linebacker in the NFL.

He sure can hit gigantic sixes but how long can he keep bowling with that physique? Must be really fragile.

Is that really true? Can some physiotherapists or doctors here weigh in on this.

Tino Best was another jacked guy and used to bowl around 140 k for a while.

I mean he must also be training his legs and lower back for support. As long as his biomechanics are on point I don't think it matters if he is buff. I'll wait for an expert though.

His 40 odd against us in the 2015 WC was still one of his best ODI innings. Game was slipping away from Pak but then he ran away with it.

How can a player be called most talented when he has not done it year in and year out on difficult pitches, different conditions all over the world, against all kinds of opposition, in sunshine and rain, year in and year out.

Its like PP has been overtaken by kids who think cricket was invented in 2002.

He's one of the most naturally talented athlete to play cricket. As a batsman however, he's a great slogger, nothing else.

If he has done it in the greatest league of all time then nothing else matters. He is a legend already just like Pollard, Bravo, Unadkat, Mohit Sharma, Shardul Thakur etc. :inti

Andre Russell, the West Indies all-rounder, has been in phenomenal batting form in the Indian Premier League 2019, accumulating 377 runs at 75.40 at a strike-rate of 220.46.

His team, Kolkata Knight Riders, fell short against Royal Challengers Bangalore by 10 runs on Friday, 19 April, but Russell remained in splendid touch, scoring a 25-ball 65 in the chase. The Jamaican was run out in the final over, which helped Bangalore to keep the hosts to 203/5 in a 214-run chase.

Russell is one of the biggest hitters of the cricket ball today, and his 39 sixes in the tournament this season are a testament to that. Second on the list is Russell's fellow Jamaican Chris Gayle, with 26 hits under his belt. Gayle, of course, is the pioneer of the T20 game: his 933 career sixes so far is over 300 more than anyone else has managed.

Gayle has had a huge influence on Russell's career, and a piece of advice the senior player gave him during the ICC World T20 2016 helped Russell morph into the power-hitter he is today.

"Chris Gayle changed my life in terms of power hitting. I've learned a lot from him," Russell said on BBC's Doosra podcast. "I used to use lighter bats, but when you make contact with a light bat, it doesn't go anywhere. During the World Cup, he came to me and said, 'Russ, you're better than that. You can use bigger bats, you're strong.'

"2016, when we won the [T20] World Cup in India, that year changed my life. That semi-final onwards, where I scored 48 (43) runs for West Indies. Now my bats are [bigger]. There's a lot of mechanics behind my bats, I play around with them a lot."

Russell revealed that watching National Football League players in the United States gave him a unique perspective on power training. He ended up developing smart training methods after observing them in Dallas, and now has a personalised gym plan.

"I work out like NFL players. When I went to Dallas a few years ago, that kind of changed my life into seeing how professional athletes in different sport go about their game," he said. "These guys train hard, high intensity. Even if they weren't doing heavy weights, they were doing a lot of repetition. That's what I use: I don't need to get big and bulky. If I get bulky, I will bowl slow and my arm speed will get slow while batting. You need to smart about how you train.

"I train hard. I work hard in the gym, like a beast. A lot of power work. Because the stronger you are, the easier you're going to hit certain balls."

Russell has been a star for Kolkata this season, taking them to victory singlehandedly on more than one occasion. The 30-year-old feels he owes such performances to Kolkata, after the support they extended towards him following the one-year ban he was handed in 2017 for a doping-code violation.

"I owe all these performances to Kolkata," he insisted. "When I got banned in 2017, I was depressed. I do not cry easily, but to see Venky Mysore [KKR CEO] take up the phone and say they were going to retain me through that time, water filled my eyes. They know me, that's the thing about family. I owe these performances to them."

The West Indies all-rounder, who has featured in only one one-day international since 2015, says he is "hungry" to get back to national duties.

Andre Russell has been in tremendous form in the ongoing Indian Premier League, in which he plays for Kolkata Knight Riders. So far in the tournament, the all-rounder has accumulated 406 runs from 11 games, at a brilliant strike rate of 209.27.

Speaking to the media on the eve of his franchise's match against Mumbai Indians, the all-rounder admitted his recent performances in the league have helped him earn his spot back into West Indies' ODI squad for the fast-approaching ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

"I wasn't surprised that I was called to the World Cup squad," Russell said on Saturday, 27 April. "I've been doing well, I've been back and forth with the selectors and the coaches back home. I know once I'm doing my work here and performing, it will lead to national duties. I wasn't focused on the World Cup. I was just making sure that whatever happened here, I was doing my best."

I'm so hungry right now to play for West Indies like I'm doing here, hit sixes and score centuries.
In recent years, Russell has been in and out of West Indies' international set-up, mostly out, due to prolonged injuries and in 2017, he was also handed a year-long ban over violation of the doping code. His only ODI appearance since 2015 came against Bangladesh in July 2018.

He was recalled to the ODI side earlier this year for the final two games of a five-match series which ended in a draw against England, however, a troubling knee problem ruled the all-rounder out of the series and also the Twenty20 leg.

"I'm so hungry now to represent the West Indies," Russell said. "The last time I joined the West Indies team was recently when I had taken two injections to better my knee and it flared up again. I was so upset. I was watching the game against England and couldn't do anything about it.

"But as I said, I'm so hungry right now to play for West Indies like I'm doing here, hit sixes and score centuries."

West Indies will be participating in a tri-nation series against hosts Ireland and Bangladesh, a rehearsal dinner for the touring teams before the World Cup. However Russell, who was not named in the squad, will continue to play in the IPL and join his team for the 50-over premier tournament after the Ireland tour.

West Indies begin their World Cup campaign on 31 May against Pakistan at Trent Bridge.

ODI World Cup and a Domestic T20 Tournament like IPL is not the same thing , he will be his real self when he starts playing international teams in ODIs.

Clocking around 86mph on a regular basis.

The ball that got Haris Sohail out was 91mph.

Soft dismissals so far but he's creating doubts in the mind of the batsman. Deceptively quick.

He can bowl fast he doesn't in leagues and bilateral ODIs.

I expect Wahab, Bumrah also to hit top speeds in this wc.

Imagine him and archer together
The run up, the finesse, the guile
It’s like being born in the 80s again

Andre Russell is irked and inspired in equal measure when he is not recognised as a genuine fast bowler and the West Indies all-rounder took his frustration out on Pakistan’s batsmen at Trent Bridge on Friday.

The 31-year-old Jamaican’s performance epitomised his team’s overall strategy in their opening match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, delivering 16 straight short-pitched balls at one point as West Indies began their campaign with an easy seven-wicket victory.

“A lot of people have been saying I’m in the team as a big-hitting batter but they don’t remember I’m a fast bowler,” said Russell after finishing with figures of 2/4 from his three overs.

“I think they underestimate me.

“I’ve been jealous in the past couple of years because people have me down as a medium-pacer. When I see ‘Andre Russell’ come up on the big screen and I see ‘medium-pacer’, I’m like, ‘who are they talking to?’.

“Actually, I’m annoyed. Who’s responsible for that stuff should change medium-pacer to fast.

“At the end of the day I’ve showed them I can bowl 90mph. I think they should put some respect by my name. Today, when you turn up and see a (bouncy) pitch like that, it gives you a vibe to bowl fast, an energy to bowl fast.”

Russell said he was unfazed by the hostility he received from the large Pakistani contingent in the crowd for bowling too many bumpers.

“I don’t mind the crowd booing,” he said. “The short balls were our strategy and I’m just doing my job. I know if I bowl fuller and get hit back over my head, they will be cheering a four or a six. You can’t please the fans all of the time.

“It takes a lot of energy to bowl that way. When I came off the field one of my teammates asked how I was feeling after six short balls in one over. I said, ‘I feel tired’. But I know I only have three overs to bowl so once I leave everything on the park, I can cool down and come back for another three overs later.

“That’s my job, three-over bursts, two-over bursts for the captain, for the team. I’m just playing my part. I’m happy for the spell I bowled, getting two important wickets and setting the tone for Oshane Thomas to come on and do what he did and for Jason Holder to come back for his second spell.”

The equally hostile Thomas was named Player of the Match after picking up 4/27 while skipper and fellow fast bowler Holder claimed 3/42.

Russell was forced to go off for the latter stages of Pakistan’s innings as he was again troubled by an ongoing knee problem.

“I’ve been struggling with my knee for the last couple of months,” he said. “When they were nine wickets down, I just ran off to get a bit of treatment.

“I’m not worried. I’ve got five days until our next game against Australia so I’m definitely going to do some work on it. I’ll be fully fit by then.”

Plz add the Multan Sultan's owner I think he is Ali tareen's reply to this. The guy's heartbroken

He bowled absolute fire today. Didn't rate him as a bowler before but today he looked better than any of Pakistan's bowlers.

Brilliant cricketer. Under a better system he would have been a ATG in all formats. I think him playing mostly T20 leagues is such a waste of his talent.

He is an excellent cricketer.

Russell is better than all of our fake swag pseudo all rounders put together.

He has achieved nothing in test cricket to be considered a great.

Played like an irresponsible tail ender yesterday. This is not domestic T20 cricket where you can slog every ball.

A dreadful shot when the game was there for the taking. Talent without brains is worthless

That too against Mitch Stark.

Dre was very stupid to have taken Starc on for his slogging.

Coulter, Zampa, Stoinis were all there for the taking for him yet he did not have the brain to see through Starc,

The whole over he has no clue against Starc.

Was never fully fit after the 1st game. He needs to do something about that knee if he wants to play for West Indies.

Andre Russell said Jamaica Tallawahs – the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) team he turns out for – is the “weirdest” team he has played for and that there is no communication within the team. His comments closely follow Chris Gayle’s allegations that the Tallawahs management “played games” with him before releasing him from his contract this year.

“This is the weirdest franchise that I have ever played in. And when I mean weird, people that are supposed to reach out to you as an individual, and I am not just a normal player in the Jamaica Tallawahs team – I was once a leader,” Russell said on an Instagram Live session on Wednesday.

He went on to say how the team management did not communicate with him regarding the player’s draft even when he had been captain of the side. Russell also said that he was hurt at how he was treated. “I felt like a first-class player that just made his debut one game ago. Your opinion is not valuable. That’s how I was treated,” he said.

Former West Indies fast bowling great Sir Curtly Ambrose has criticised Andre Russel for playing in the Lanka Premier League neglecting his duties as a West Indies cricketer.

Russel is playing in Sri Lanka for Colombo Kings after declining an invitation to represent the West Indies during the recent T20 series in New Zealand where the West Indies lost 2-0.

Russel received a No-Objection Certificate to play in the Lankan Premier League as he does not have a centralized contract with the West Indies cricket board.

“The guys who are in control, in authority, have to decide to make some serious decisions and stick with it for cricket to move forward. I think that we are going about this thing too casual.

“Guys can do what they feel, come into the team when they feel like, go to ply their trade to the different franchises, leave West Indies cricket for dead and then come back into the team,” Ambrose said while speaking on Mason & Guest radio show in Barbados on Tuesday.
