Andre Russell is a mercenary and whilst you can't blame him for playing these leagues, it shouldn't be ahead of International commitments.

He always tries to shuffle to the leg side to make room in order to slog, quick bowlers angle the ball into him and he gets all messed up
 
He has always struggled vs Bumrah in slog overs. I recall back in 2019, he smashed RCB bowlers like Southee and Siraj for 90 runs in the final 5 overs while chasing but his hitting weakness has always been exploited by Jassie Bumrah and that is the main reason why MI are 22-6 ahead vs KKR.
 
West Indies and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder, Andre Russell, has crossed the threshold of 6000 runs in T20 cricket during an IPL match against the Delhi Capitals.

The big hitter became the sixth West Indian to reach the mark behind the likes of Dwayne Bravo, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith, Kieron Pollard on top run-getter Chris Gayle. Russell is, however, the youngest West Indian player to reach the total.

Russell, who was celebrating his birthday, reached the milestone with a double in the 16th over of the match. He went on to blast an unbeaten 45 from 27 deliveries but Delhi won the match by 7 runs.

Overall, Russell has played 80 matches in the Indian Premier League, scoring 1635 runs at an average of 29.68 with a strike rate of 179.67 and a high score of 88*. He has also taken 68 wickets in IPL so far, at an economy rate of 9.08 and an average of 26.86.

This season the player is off to a strong start for Kolkata, scoring 118 runs in six matches at a solid strike rate of 151. He has also claimed seven wickets in six games. Things have, however, not gone well for KKR who have lost four of their first 6 games.

Australia's bid to knock off the reigning T20 world champions on their home turf will have a further challenge with superstar allrounder Andre Russell in line to play his first international match in more than a year.

West Indies named the 33-year-old in a provisional 18-man squad captained by Kieron Pollard for their three upcoming T20 series against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan.

Russell, who is among the world's most devastating T20 players but has not played for the Windies since March last year, is in line to face Australia in July alongside the likes of Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder.

Exciting young batter Shimron Hetmyer and paceman Sheldon Cottrell have also returned to the squad, but mystery spinner Sunil Narine remains on the outer.

While 24-year-old Pooran and 25-year-old Hetmyer represent two of the Caribbean's most exciting young batters, the Windies have also included veterans Dwayne Bravo (37) and Fidel Edwards (39) along with Gayle (41) and Pollard (34).

Batter Andre Fletcher, 33, who had an entertaining maiden BBL stint with the Melbourne Stars last summer, is also included.

Australia's five-match T20 and three-match ODI series, to be played in St Lucia and Barbados respectively, are sandwiched by home T20 campaigns against the Proteas (in Grenada) and Pakistan (Barbados).

The return of Russell after he skipped the Windies' T20 series against New Zealand in November to play in the Lanka Premier League is a major boost ahead of the side's defence of their T20 World Cup trophy later this year.

The former Sydney Thunder star, a devastating power-hitter who also bowls at express pace, was named in the ICC's team of the tournament in 2016 and remains one of the most coveted players on the domestic T20 circuit despite battling a crippling knee injury.

"These upcoming T20Is are crucial in terms of our preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup," said Windies coach Phil Simmons.

"We are at that point where we have identified those who we will look to be the core of the squad to defend our World Cup title.

"We won five years ago, so the next few weeks and months will be major stepping stones on the road towards defending our title and being World Champions for a third time."

Australia have not played the Windies in T20 cricket since a March 2014 meeting at the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh when a side captained by George Bailey was beaten by six wickets.

Australia last won a T20 against the Windies nine years ago in 2012 at that year's T20 World Cup in Colombo.

Russel is bang average cricketer in every other format other than T20 where he is a beast and will have a big say for WI in T20 WC.

Thats nothing unusual, most batsmen will struggle to strike big against 140kphs plus bowlers if they get it right doesnt matter who you are.

Jamaica Tallawahs’ Andre Russell bulldozed his way through Caribbean Premier League record books in a stunning assault as the allrounder scored the fastest half-century in the T20 league history on Friday. Coming in to bat in the 18th over, Russell struck an unbeaten 14-ball 50 to set the record as he powered Tallawahs to a mammoth 255/5 against St Lucia Kings at Warner Park.

Kings bowler Wahab Riaz took the brunt of the assault, finishing with figures of 0/16 from three overs. Obed McCoy did take three wickets but conceded 52 runs as well from his four overs.

In reply, Kings were bowled out for 135 in 17.3 overs with Tallawahs registering a massive 120-run win. Migael Pretorius was the pick of the bowlers taking 4/32 while Imran Khan finished with 3/7.

#Russell’s half-century off 14 deliveries is the fastest ever in CPL history. He overtook the previous record of 15-ball fifty set by JP Duminy in 2019.

#Russell blasted 49 runs in the final two overs of the innings and thus drew level for the most numbers of runs scored in the 19th and 20th over of a T20I innings. Umar Akmal is the other batter to have done the same during the National T20 Cup in 2016.

#Tallawahs crushed Kings by 120 runs which is the biggest win by run-margin in CPL history. Before them, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots held the record when they beat Tallawahs by 119 runs in 2015.

#In Tallawahs total of 255, a total of 25 runs were registered in the extras column which is the most in CPL history.

During his innings Russell struck three fours and six sixes having walked in to bat in the 18th over of the Tallawahs innings.

Andre Russell does not know how to bat, so it is very hard to take him seriously. These T20 players are nothing but a hack.

He knows how to hack successfully in a T20. Thankfully it will be very hard for him to bat like Joe root.
 
I’m not sure he’s quite up there in the category of Lara, Viv, Hafeez, Kohli, Wasim, Warne or Tendulkar if you are talking about pure natural talent in cricket. These guys are hands down the most gifted cricketers I’ve ever seen.

He is currently in Australia playing a meaningless Big Bash whilst the Windies team is in Pakistan. He has done this in the past as well when Windies were playing and he was playing pyjama cricket in SPL! He is the epitome of what is wrong with international cricket. He is too big to play in Pakistan at the moment but will want a PSL contract as a marquee player when he turns 36, and PCB or PSL managements will rush to give him a platinum contract!


When will this mercenary be called out and purged out for good!
 
The issue of Andre Russell’s loyalty to West Indies cricket was up for discussion on the Mason&Guest talk show in Barbados on Tuesday night and it sparked a contentious conversation between the show’s host Andrew Mason and CWI West Indies Vice-President Kishore Shallow.

Mason believes the CWI is seemingly willing to bend over backwards to accommodate the players’ fancies.

Russell had declared himself unavailable for the West Indies tour of Pakistan for three T20 Internationals citing personal reasons. A relatively inexperienced West Indies team has so far lost two of the three matches with one match to go on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Russell signed on to represent the Melbourne Stars in Australia’s Big Bash League. On the weekend, he scored an unbeaten 42 from 21 balls and was named Man of the Match in the Stars’ six-wicket win over the Sydney Thunder.

On Tuesday, Dr Shallow sought to explain why Russell was in Australia and not in Pakistan helping the West Indies.

“Russell indicated to the lead selector that he was mentally fatigued in the bubble and in the Big Bash League, where he is now, he would be required to be in a bubble,” Dr Shallow said. “That was the rationale provided to the lead selector.”

An obviously exasperated Mason was unable to contain his displeasure at the situation where certain players only choose to represent the West Indies when it suits them to.

“Yes, Dr Shallow, they have got to get the opportunity to make money but there is a word called ‘sacrifice’,” Mason declared, adding that such situations are almost unique to the West Indies.
“The other players don’t do it to their countries, and I am sure Russell is going to be ready to play for us in the world cup and we are going to pick him.

“We cannot continue with the foolishness with these guys.”

Sir Andy Roberts also weighed in on Dr Shallow’s explanation, suggesting that the players seem to make their decisions based on money only.

“These guys just don’t want to play for the West Indies because the fees ain't that high,” said the long-retired fast bowler. “I am not saying that they should not be allowed to go but they should only go if the West Indies do not require their services.”

This is not the first time Russell has faced criticism over his decisions on when to represent the West Indies.

In December 2020, the iconic Antiguan fast bowler publicly criticized Andre Russell, who declined an invitation to play for the West Indies against New Zealand but later went to play in the Sri Lanka Premier League T20.

Chief selector Roger Harper told media that Russell declined the West Indies invitation citing the need to clear his mind after being in quarantine lockdown for both the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in Trinidad and Tobago where he played for the Jamaica Tallawahs franchise and then, the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Abu Dhabi where he played for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

“Because he wants to clear his head for a while to get his mind together, I have no problem with that because cricket is a high-pressure game,” Ambrose said then.

“So if you want to clear your head for a while, take your mind off cricket I have no issues with that, but if you are going to reject playing for your nation, your country, and then two weeks later you’re playing for somebody else, that to me is a no-no.”

In a later interview, Ambrose provided further clarity.

“The game has evolved. There is a lot more cricket being played now and many different T20 tournaments around the globe and there’s lots more money as well, so guys are going to go where the money is and I have no issues with that,” Ambrose said.

“A cricket career can be a very short one, once you have an injury it could be all over for you so with guys going around plying their trade with different franchises making money to set themselves up financially, I have no issues with it.

“However, I think it needs to strike a balance somewhere because most of these guys who are playing their trade around the world, it’s because they played for the West Indies team why people saw them and gave them contracts.

So for me, you need to find a balance somewhere where you can give back to West Indies cricket. You need to give back to West Indies cricket at some point as opposed to abandoning West Indies

Excellent comeback from one of the t20 greats and World T20 champion Andre Russel. Other West Indian players should put their differences aside and play for their country. Nothing better than getting praised for the performance that you did for your country. Superb spell of bowling and that finish with Powell.​

In the 4th T20I against England Andre Russell fought hard scoring 51 runs in just 25 deliveries but couldn't secure a win for his team.
 
What is the use of Andre Russell as a bowler? He has no pace, no consistent line, and length. Why does he call himself an all-rounder?
 
He is another version of Azam Khan


In league cricket he plays on another level but on the international stage I hardly seen him performing.
 
A superb athlete who should have focused more on Test Cricket. Most of the West Indians are naturally gifted but their focus has always been on money.

Then no PAK/NZ/SL/WI/BD player has any legacy after 1996 because only Big 3 has won ODI World Cups after that and South Africa is the only non Big 3 nation to have dominated Test cricket for a period of time.

20-ball fifty for Dre Russ. I remember how bad of a shape Andre Russell was in during 2021-22. He wasn’t consistent and was struggling, totally unfit. Still, KKR somehow believed in him and retained him. Now he’s back to his best, and KKR deserves every single credit for it.

He propelled KKR to a total of 208/7 in 20 overs with his unbeaten 64 off just 25 balls.

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has completed 8,500 runs in T20 cricket. The star T20 cricketer attained the milestone with his 6th run in a must-win ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8, Group 2 clash against South Africa at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.

Recently, Russell went past 450 T20 wickets and completed 500 appearances in the format.

Does Rahul Dravid has no legacy?
I think Legacy is not just defined by trophies.

T20s are gaining importance but a players legacy is still defined by how he does in ODIS and tests.

Even cricketers themselves do agree with this.
 
The greatest T20 allrounder of all time and will slot into any XI.

Truly gifted athlete and amazing how he has built his body back at age of 36 to bowl 135+ again and stay a world class fielder.

Love Dre but his international cricket record is absolutely pathetic. He is actually one of the worst ever international cricketers for all the hype accumulated through domestic leagues.

Darren Sammy has done more.
Corey Collimore was a better international cricketer.

There is no such thing as 'T20 legend'. T20 is a mickey mouse format whose result should not be taken seriously. "T20 is not cricket. And Pollard is not a cricketer" - Michael Holding
 
Russell came up in an era when West Indies were finished but when it comes to natural talent and ability, I truly believe there have been very few all-rounders like Andre Russell in the history of the game. Had he come up in the 80s, I could have seen him slot right into that ATG West Indies side.

He is built like a tank, athletically gifted and one of the best fielders you will ever see. He has the ability bowl at 140+ and can consistently bowl at 135+. His striking ability with the bat is just insane. He hits the ball with so much force that you know its a six the moment it touches his bat. An Andre Russell six is well and truly in a league of its own because nobody hits sixes quite like he does.

It's a shame that because of the era he came up in, his potential could only be tapped in the shortest format. Because he had all the tools to achieve greatness in this sport.

Andre Russell lashes out after TKR's loss in CPL eliminator owing to floodlights​


Andre Russell expressed his frustration following the unfortunate exit of Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) from the CPL 2024 after an eliminator loss to the Barbados Royals. The high-stakes match at Providence Stadium, Guyana, was marked by an unexpected floodlight failure that disrupted play, ultimately affecting the outcome and leaving Russell and TKR fans aggrieved. Russell took to his Instagram to call-out the concerns over floodlights which cost them an eliminator 2 berth. TKR were in a commanding position at 168/3 with just one ball left in their innings when a sudden power outage hit the stadium.

The disruption forced officials to resort to the DLS method, resulting in a significantly reduced target of just 60 runs for the Royals in five overs. The outcome left TKR players visibly upset, especially Russell, who felt the situation was unfair to his side. Defending a modest target in a T20 match is always a tough ask, and TKR's bowlers faced an uphill battle to contain a hard-hitting Barbados Royals batting lineup. Despite an early breakthrough by Sunil Narine, who dismissed Quinton de Kock, and a brief moment of hope when Chris Jordan almost had Rovman Powell out, the tide turned against TKR.

How TKR lost the match?​


David Miller's explosive 50* off just 17 deliveries, including five towering sixes, took the game away from TKR in no time, sealing the win for the Royals with 9 wickets in hand. The shortened chase heavily favoured Barbados Royals, leaving TKR players, particularly Russell, questioning the circumstances under which the match was decided.

Fans and players alike were left puzzled by the handling of the situation, with many feeling the delay could have been managed better. TKR's superior position in the points table would have allowed them to progress if the match had been called off.

Russell's frustration was evident, as the abrupt conclusion denied TKR a fair chance to defend a competitive total they had built through Nicholas Pooran's outstanding 91* and strong contributions from Jason Roy and Andre Russell himself. For Russell and TKR, this loss in such unusual circumstances felt like an opportunity lost, leaving them with a sense of unfinished business in the CPL 2024 campaign.
