Tim Paine has taken Virat Kohli down a peg or two with a classic exchange which continued the pair’s verbal sparring.

They went toe to toe at stumps last session as ‘King Kohli’ started to unravel as Australia regained control of the second Test.

And, as he and Usman Khawaja pushed Australia;s lead past 200, Paine revived the verbal sparring with Kohli - forcing umpire Chris Gaffaney to step in and cool things down.

Part of the exchange was caught by the stump microphones, with Paine noting Kohli had “lost it” late on Sunday.

“You’re the one that lost it yesterday, that’s why you’re trying to be cool today,” Paine said to Kohli, who was fielding at mid-on.

Sensing things could bubble over, Gaffaney stepped in to calm the situation.

“That’s enough. Come on, just play the game. You’re the captains!” Gaffaney says.

Paine retorted: “We’re just trying to have a conversation. There’s no swearing.”

Paine had the last laugh, and last comment, when he looked over at Kohli and gave one final piece of advice: “keep your cool Virat”.

Gaffaney earned some praise from Australian great Mike Hussey, who says he’s handled the situation perfectly.

“He’s done the right thing there, just getting in between the two of them,” Hussey says.

The over finishes with Kohli crowding the pitch and running into Paine as he completes a single.

Keep your cool, Virat.

Poor stuff from Kohli, why pick on Tim Paine ? He is not a trouble starter like Warner.... Success is starting to get into his head, he reminds me so much of Ponting every day passes.

You are being harsh on Ponting here. He didn’t do such antics or get physical.

Actually he wasn’t very verbal either and left it to others

Ponting lol? He was only hated by Indians and was nowhere as obnoxious as Kohli.

Kohli is going to end up being hated by everyone that isn't Indian. He is cricket's new villain.

Always liked Ponting and love his commentary

Kohli's sledging looks fake and forced. He should stop trying so hard and let it happen naturally. Right now it's cringe-worthy.

Paine has handled him really well.

I have to agree......... He needs to calm down..

Ohh Boi, Kohli is going to get a lot of heat when he comes to BAT. He will get all the respect in the world if he can lead India to victory, which i dont think he will do. Still his behavior has been terrible...To the ppl comparing him to SRT ??? lol are you on DRUGSSSSSS

But Kohli will be expecting and be ready for that. If the Aussies had any brains they would much rather offer no reaction at all, treating him as a tail-ender.

Kohli is great for cricket, this is the type of cricket that people love watching. Dont think many Aussies hate Kohli.

Kholi and Paine exchange was a light funny one. Nothing to make an issue about. Aussies aren't usually innocent on the field either so they shouldn't complain.

Watching Kohli laugh like a schoolyard bully when he caught Paine in the slip..... grow up man!

Tim Paine. What a sledge about Virat Kohli to his Indian teammates. “I know he’s your captain. But you can’t seriously like him as a bloke”?

Paine got the last laugh like yesterday, Kohli looking like a big idiot who's team lost to the weakest Aus team eve.r

Jumping around like a monkey and making that OUU OUU face each time a wicket falls is hilarious at best.

This!

That was not emotions. That was pure disrespect. I dont know how can anyone defend him after yesterday's and today's play when he first ran into Paine unnecessarily while he was batting and then laughed like a retaard when Paine got out.

Amazing double standards :
Rahane walks in, Lyon follows him and says some sweet nothings, but no mention...
Sure when Kohli does it - it is blown out of proportions.

Now that Paine sledges an Indian batsman about Kohli, all approve, as if he has some sort of a moral high ground. The Indian batsman should have asked Paine to focus his attentions to his team mates to ensure none of them were using sandpaper to rough up that ball..'coz pretty much nothing was happening while Kohli was there

Well, for what it's worth Vijay's test career has effectively ended after that innings anyway.

I have said for years that Tim Paine was missed awfully from 2011-17 due to his injuries.

He is a true leader: he’s tough (remember him restraining Warner on the Durban stairwell) but doesn’t cross any invisible line.

But also unlike virtually any Aussie player or pundit, he has no potential future Indian earnings to protect, so he won’t just suck up to either Team India, the BCCI or Kohli.

We all know that Kohli is as obnoxious as Javed Miandad was, but whereas the likes of Starc or even Warner have IPL earnings to protect, Tim Paine won’t let Kohli get away with his bullying nonsense.

There is an Aussie school of sledging and there is a West Delhi University of sledging. King Kohli belongs to the latter! :kohli

Crash Craddock has just revealed that yesterday Kohli sledged Paine with:

“I’m the best player in the world and you’re just a stand-in captain”.

(Maybe someone should tell Kohli that until AB De Villiers retired last Easter, AB and Rabada were the world’s best players. Kohli is only at the same level as Steve Smith and Williamson).

“Get out this ball and you get to go the disco tonight; there’s a good circuit in Perth on a Monday night” - Last ball sledge, man these are cunning

Needs to sledge better.

This is just cringy.

I liked Kohli's part time captain jibe haha. That was clever. Dunno when he said that.

Craddock is a habitual liar, don't take his words seriously. Guys like Craddock, Malcolm Conn, Ben Horne have no credibility and special hatred for Indians. Same guys made up stories even during the 2008 Monkeygate series and the 2017 series, all sorts of fairy tales with no basis.

"Speaking to a couple of the boys, Virat was going to the umpire and telling the umpire that 'Tim Paine is talking to me. Can you tell him to stop?' That type of thing," Johnson told Fox Cricket.

I guess Kohli can't really take it in when someone gives it back

Keep going at it, much needed. Love watching the intensity. All within limits so far, and no personal abuses. Some people will find it cringeworthy, some will exaggerate, so be it. Also, sledging/banter doesn't have anything to do with a win or a loss. If you sledge only when you're winning, then you're a pretender.

And not surprisingly IPL gets into the discussion by who else but Junaids. Watch a bit of Ind-Aus 2016 series in India or the 2014 series in Australua Junaids, all Aussie 'IPL' players were at Kohli all the time like a rash. No one lost their contracts. Things do not work that way in the professional world.

Picture telling a thousand words here...

Aussies going after Kohli. They know he is the one player that can help the Indians make a big score so they are trying to get under his skin and at this moment in time it looks like its working. Kohli should be professional and just wait until he has beaten them. then he can let it all out..

I don’t mind the sledging as long as it doesn’t go personal like family or getting physical.

Problem here was Kohli was going into Paines personal space. Once you cross that line you look silly so he did today.

I like Kohli but he should know the limits to what he can say and do by now.

In the 2017 test series IPL stars Maxwell (Punjab captain) and Smith (Pune captain) had no qualms about mocking Kohli's serious injury (he missed the next test and half of IPL), that's how low class those people are. Were those 2 removed from skipper duties in the IPL which was held after the test series?

This is plain disgraceful and pathetic behavior, both are not in the team.

not really

Ponting could be very thuggish

Loving it.

Refreshing to see some good cricket and good hearted banter going on.

All in the spirit of the game.

Lol, pathetic. Everytime I think this guy has grown up, he pulls off petty rubbish like this.

And someone tell him Kane is the best batsman in the world, now that Smith is banned, ABD is retired and Amla is on his last legs.

Also, worst captain in the world, as evidenced by his selections and tactics throughout the year.

No one claimed Kohli is a saint. But Aussie cricket ecosystem is full of bullies, nothing wrong in exchanging blows with bullies rather than being servile. And your observation doesn't change the fact that the likes of Craddock, Conn and Horne are extreme Aussie rabid nationalists with a definite bias against brown skin people. They are the opposite of experts like Roebuck, Haigh who are objective and honest in their duty. Asking for soundbites from Craddock about Kohli will be like asking Gambhir's opinion about Pakistan or Basit Al's view about India, no credibility.

Haha must be hurting so much to see him score 100s after 100s across formats and see his team at the top of the rankings.

Amal was never the best batsman in the world be it on his first or last legs.

Had a 3-4 year purple patch with little else alongside.

de Villiers was much better of course. A 21st century ATG if you take both formats into account.

Yeah assuming he did say that.

Did the stump mic pick up this exchange?

Apparently Kohli complained to the umpires about Paine talking to him.

Fake tough guy :)))

Paine seems like a good guy, must be really bad to get him to respond.

Brilliant stuff from King Kohli. It not only triggered Tim Paine but our Asian neighbours as well :)))
:sarf2 :shakib

Tim Paine is having last laugh coz he is winythe match, if Kohli had won the match Tim wouldn't had mattered.

Relax...we are winning the series. Even before the series started, I posted the below here in 'Predict the outcome of the series' thread:

Adelaide - Ind win
Perth - Aust win
MCG - Draw
SCG - Ind win

My prediction is right so far and hopefully it stays for next 2 games as well.

India is winning this series and retaining the border-gavaskad trophy.

Kohli needs to be suspended for 4/5 tests atleast. But obviously I don't expect BCCICC to do anything against him just like they didn't do anything when he used lollipop to tamper the ball. He acts like a thug on the cricket. He's nothing but a disgrace to this great sport. And what makes it even funnier is this immature, egotistical, brat is the captain of a national team. Wow.

Seeing the way Lyon bowl not sure how you are confident of Indian win in SCG

Who would have thought we'd have an Ind - Aus series where the Indian pace bowlers would be lethal with the Australian spinner ripping through the Indian line-up haha?

Being a cricket encyclopedia, anything I say has merit behind it. If we play the right team (i.e play Kuldeep Yadav) in Sydney...we will win. MCG is flat deck and we drew there even in 2014. So it will be a batting shootout. Perth was the only danger and its out of way now.

The MCG curator was hauled up last year after he made the road to end all roads.

So expect a fiery greentop.

Go on Kohli! Give these kangaroos the taste of their own medicine! Lol at our neighbouring brothers whining and ranting about Kohli's antics. He's anyday better than those captains who run across the pitch towards his own bowlers shouting and screaming at them after every ball... :))

OK Smith didn't do it. This image was shared on twitter, but Maxwell did mock Kohli.

Apology to Smith fans. Would remove that pic but can't edit.

Smith is not playing the game, is he? Who is the captain Tim Paine.

Tim has been a gentleman while Kohli is trying to abuse but when Paine turned out to be too cheeky what does he do? He complains to the umpire, what a bad sport.

You have to factor in the history, all the bad blood built up over the years. Aussie media has been very harsh on him, Aussie fans frequently boo him and anyway Kohli isn't like Rahane/Pujara temperament wise. These things boil over. I have seen how Aussies behave with Asian players, so can't take their side. Had Kohli shown this behavior with Kiwis or Kane, I would have lambasted him. Sorry but I feel no sympathy for the Aussie cricket ecosystem, history has given me lessons about their so called lines and sportsmanship. In fact I will support every single Asian cricketer if it comes to on field tussles with Aussies.

Aussies are rebuilding at this time, Aussies were much more aggressive but under Tim Paine this is a different unit. I am seeing less aggressiveness but come on man Kohli is the world's best batsman in the world, who is Tim Paine? Nobody even knows him, why get physical with him.

Fair enough. I respect your perception. Good post :amla

Even someone like Naseeruddin Shah had a go at Kohli today. Finally people are having enough of his monkey acts and disgraceful behaviour.
Paine being absolutely brilliant with clever quirps and jibes at Kohli.Sledging comes natural to AussiesKohli only knows Mc,Bc as he is incapable of coming up with such gems.Disgraceful Player

Kohli did nothing of what you are accusing him of, please tell me where this abuse happened. Kohli called him Paine a stand in captain, unless that now means mc bc, you are spouting **.
Also Naseeruddin Shah is a bumbling arrogant man who was never a star but thinks everyone who was is overrated.

Who promised not to start verbal sledging unless it was from Aussie side?Don't try to defend his crass behaviour.Even Gavaskar slammed him today. He would have been heavily criticised but many are worried they will meet the same fate as Kumble.

So he sledged an Aussie what happened to the line? Who decides this arbitrary crass behaviour standard. Has he broken any rules, if he has punish him if not stop moaning.

Gavaskar once tried to have his team abondon a game because he was given out, so gavaskar really doesn't have much to stand on here.

You need a brain to sledge and must be quick-witted. Also, the best form of sledging is done in a subtle way and then only is it most effective.

I think Kohli is doing all this deliberately. Aussies are notorious sledgers and mental disintegration is their mantra, moreover they are playing at home where they get even more aggressive. Kohli is painting a target on his back and telling the Aussies to have a go at him. This way all the focus is shifted to Kohli and other 10 players are shielded from barbs, boos and local media scrutiny. Kohli is doing it because he can take it, like the Dark Knight. Others (esp youngsters) may get intimidated or lose focus but Kohli the seasoned campaigner has learnt to channel the negative energy to improve his own performance and hunger.

Come to think of it, what he is doing is heroic. Evey single tour before Kohli's time I remember Aussies sledging our players non-stop, usually isolating the Fab 4/5 and going after the weaker targets like hyenas. Of course none of our legends (except Ganguly to a small extent) then had the nature to fight fire with fire, they escaped unscathed but the lesser players around them had a dip which ultimately cost our team. Kohli experienced the nasty verbals during our dreadful 2011-12 tour and maybe it made an impact on his mindset, especially in contests against Australia. Why else would he behave better in SA and England? This series his team mates haven't fired on full cylinders but at least they don't have the excuse of mental disintegration or press/crowd/player pressure, Captain India has ensured they can go about their jobs quietly in the shadows while he takes the heavy hits. I have had issues with Kohli's antics in the past but I smell a deliberate strategy here, I think he got influenced by the movie 'Dark knight' and wants to emulate Batman.

What do you think Ashraful_Rox? is it a possible explanation? :kohli:vk2

I have had issues with Kohli's antics in the past but I smell a deliberate strategy here, I think he got influenced by the movie 'Dark knight' and wants to emulate Batman.

What do you think Ashraful_Rox? is it a possible explanation? :kohli:vk2

I like the way you think. POTW
