Honestly Virat was also a good captain but luck didn't support him in getting the best results for his team. Otherwise his decision making abilities were spot on.
Naw he wasnt. He got exposed as soon as Dhoni left international cricket, Something people don't pick up on.

When it comes to infield decisions + DRS, Dhoni guided him especially in drs reviews since Dhoni never messed up on those

Kohli was mainly helped by Dhoni while Rohit is a natural leader. Especially in white ball, Rohit is way ahead of Kohli while in Tests, I would say that Kohli did better job.

'Once a Player Hits The Mid-thirties...': Sunil Gavaskar Questions Absence of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli From Duleep Trophy

Prior to the announcement of the squads for the upcoming Duleep Trophy – a red-ball competition that will kickstart India’s domestic season – there were speculations that it could be a star-studded affair with top international stars set to feature.

The selectors named the four squads recently which do feature top India cricketers barring a few including Test captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya.

While Bumrah has given extended period of rest given his past history with back issues, Shami is continuing recovery from an ankle injury. On the other hand, Pandya hasn’t played first-class cricket since December 2018 having prioritised his white-ball career given his own history with injuries.

However, Rohit and Kohli haven’t been picked.

Why?

Because in the words of BCCI secretary Jay Shah, picking them doesn’t make any sense and they don’t want them to pick up injuries playing domestic cricket given the upcoming Test assignments including a five-match series in Australia.

“It doesn’t make sense to add to Virat and Rohit’s load by asking them to play domestic cricket. They run the risk of getting injured,” Shah had told The Times of India.

However, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar differs in his view. He argues that both Rohit and Kohli aren’t spring chickens anymore and for them to remain in top form will be relatively more challenging than when they were younger.

Gavaskar says they both could have benefitted from some game time in the Duleep Trophy that starts from September 5.

“The selectors have not picked the skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the Duleep Trophy so they will most likely go into the Bangladesh Test series without much match practice,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for the mid-day.

“While it’s understandable that somebody like Jasprit Bumrah with his delicate back needs to be handled with care, the batters could have done with some batting time out in the middle. Once a player hits the mid-thirties in any sport, then regular competition will help him maintain the high standards he has set. When there’s a longish gap then the muscle memory weakens somewhat and to get back to the high standards from earlier is not easy,” he added.

Rohit last played a Test in March this year while Kohli in January. However, both have been regularly playing white-ball cricket and recently announced their retirements from T20Is.

The duo will be back in action from the Bangladesh Test series next month.

Kamran Akmal, former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter, suggested during an interview with an Indian media outlet that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should visit Pakistan before retiring from cricket:

“Virat and Rohit should visit Pakistan before they retire.”

“These two are stars of world cricket, traveling across the globe to play the game. Every single fan loves them. They have a massive fan base due to their batting and match-winning performances. The fan following, they will experience in Pakistan will surpass anything they’ve seen elsewhere.”

“Virat is a role model for many around the world, Rohit is the World Cup-winning captain, and Bumrah is currently the best pacer in the world. When players like Virat, Rohit and Bumrah visit Pakistan, it will evoke unique feelings in every fan. Virat has been to Pakistan during his under-19 days, but he wasn’t as popular then.”

Sanjay Manjrekar said while speaking on a sports media outlet:

"I'm not worried, but I'm sure somebody made a note of the fact that they would have been better off had they played some red-ball cricket. There was the option of picking them in the Duleep Trophy. So one has to be careful about treating certain players differently and do what's best for Indian cricket and for the player. Virat and Rohit not playing (Duleep Trophy) was not good for Indian cricket, nor was it good for the two players. Had they played the Duleep Trophy and had some time in the red-ball cricket, things would have been different."

"But they have the class and experience to make a comeback later in the series, and I don't see them, for that reason, not being in form. But something that one must make a quiet note of, and that has been a problem with Indian cricket for a long time now, is that certain players get picked out for special treatment because of their status, which eventually hurts that player more than anyone else."

Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood was all praise for Indian captain and legendary opening batter Rohit Sharma:

"Rohit Sharma plays fast bowling Unbelievably well. The bounce doesn't seem to worry him, The movement doesn't seem to worry him. He's got all the time in the World. I find it quite tough to bowl him,"

Harbhajan Singh while speaking on a program on local channel sent a firm Virat Kohli's captaincy reminder:

"Kohli ki kaptaani mei chaahe aap World Cup nahi jeete (you may not have won a World Cup under Kohli's captaincy), but it doesn't make him a lesser captain or lesser player."

"Jo usne aag lagayi na team mei (the fire that he ignited in the team), like it may be a target of 400 in the fourth innings of a Test, we'll go for the chase, we won't' panic. If we go down, we do it while chasing."

"...it takes a lot of guts and brain, which Kohli has instilled in the team. So every person has left his legacy."

Former Pakistan player Basit Ali said that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are taking cricket for granted:

“They are not concentrating on the game after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Earlier, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma used to have proper practice sessions but they have made it optional. It seems they are taking cricket for granted. Virat and Rohit think that if they get out early in one innings, they will score big in the next. But cricket doesn’t work like that. The water has gone above the head now and if these two don’t score runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, India wll be in big trouble,”

Kohli is the better batter, Rohit is overall a better all format pick especially for t20.

An onsong rohit is 100x more deadly then an onsong kohli

Both are deeply mediocre Test batsmen which means neither of them are in a conversation of being amongst the greats of the game.

Right time for them to retire from Test cricket

For sure.

One bad series and your mainstay batters should retire..
They are having bad series one after another. This is the first series where the results are also against them.

It seems you only have started watching cricket since last 1-2 years.

Kohli is a better batsman than Rohit in each and every format.

I said kohli is a better batter but rohit is more deadly.

What part of that do you not get? Are you telling me kohli is also more deadly? Them why do they call Rohit Hitman? Because he starred in James bond ?

Yep Kohli waits till very last while Rohit used to come and start bang bang

What’s their batting average in the last 2 years? And compare that with other batters in India.

I don’t know, I’m just curious.

Virat is a missed fire bullet. He should not be playing anymore. His reflexes have gone slow and his ability to play has gone low now.

Same is the case with Rohit Sharma but he is still not as bad as kohli.

Captaincy wise, I think it is same.

Calling him a legendary Test captain seems exaggerated given his ordinary statistics.

Rohit Sharma's post-match press conference after being whitewashed by New Zealand in the 3-Test match series:

"It is a concern when seniors aren't scoring runs. But what's done is done. As a player, as a captain, as the team, we all have to look forward and see how we can correct what we didn't manage to achieve here. We have an opportunity to do something special in Australia. We'll focus on that now."

"We made a lot of mistakes, so I think those mistakes needs to be addressed. I think it's important to just focus on that particular series,"

Look at the nerve on him, he should be praying he doesn't get sent packing but instead is already looking forward to playing in the series against Australia, as if everything is just willy nilly and this whitewash is completly irrelevant.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir in a pre-departure press conference before leaving for Australia ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25:

"I have got no concerns whatsoever for Virat and Rohit. What does Ponting have to do with Indian cricket? I think you should think about Australian cricket and what I have got no concern for Virat and Rohit and I think they are incredibly tough."

"They've achieved a lot for Indian cricket and they will continue to achieve a lot in future. For me the most important thing is that they still work really hard. They are still passionate, they still want to achieve a lot more and that is something which is very important."

"Hunger in a dressing room is incredibly important for me and the entire group of people as well in the dressing in the dressing room and I feel there's a lot of hunger and especially after what has happened in the last series."

If Rohit skip a test, it might be a blessing in disguise for India.
