[VIDEOS/PICTURES] Asif Afridi banned for two years for anti-corruption offences

Agree...the guy has delivered solid performances in domestic, turns the ball, is quite smart when it comes to his bowling + better batter + more importantly, has delivered gutsy performances both in the domestic and in the recent PSL including the finals. International teams need such strong characters who can think on their feet. I believe he will do well.

Plus you cant go wrong when your sir name is Afridi. :)

Not picked for the ODI Series against the Windies

Asif Afridi was unfairly dropped didn't play one game however with nawaz back it was very unlikely he would have been played.

Daryll Cullinan during KPL commentary: “Asif has not played for Pakistan is really surprising”

Asif Afridi being as miserly as ever in whiteball cricket

The Pakistan Cricket Board, on 12 September 2022, provisionally suspended Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s left-arm spinner Asif Afridi with immediate effect under Article 4.7.1** of the PCB Anti-Corruption Code, which means that he cannot take part in any cricket-related activity, pending conclusion of the investigation being carried out by PCB's Anti-Corruption Unit.

Asif Afridi has today been issued a Notice of Charge for two breaches under Article 2.4 of the Code and has fourteen (14) days to respond to the charges.

As this is an ongoing investigation, the PCB will not make any further comment pending the outcome of this case.

Note:

Article 4.7.1 reads as: Where either (a) the PCB decides to charge a Participant with an offence under this Anti-Corruption Code; or (b) the PCB considers that there are other exceptional circumstances relevant to a Participant (for example, where any relevant police authority has arrested and/or charged a Participant with an offence under any relevant criminal law in respect of facts or circumstances that may also constitute an offence under this Anti-Corruption Code), it, shall have the discretion, in circumstances where it considers that the integrity of the sport could otherwise be seriously undermined, to Provisionally Suspend the Participant pending the Anti-Corruption Tribunal‟s determination of whether he/she has committed an offence. He is innocent. PCB have acted in haste, but he has done nothing wrong

As per sources, Asif's complaint was first made to the board by a Test cricketer last year. He said the spinner had offered to join the Bangladesh League during the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

At the same time, in some matches, he had indicated to "play" for someone else, but the said cricketer refused to do so while declaring himself as Amin and also reported the matter to PCB.

During the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the anti-corruption unit took Asif's mobile phone into custody.

He confessed to the crime in a video statement, but he said the mistake was not only to report the suspicious contact to the board.

Someone from the Bangladesh League offered him to come and play in a few matches and do whatever we say. According to Asif, there was no intention of inducing a fellow cricketer for fixing.

The spinner's name had already been included in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) draft and Multan Sultans also selected him, but by that time, reports about Asif Afridi had started circulating in the cricket circle.

This was the reason why Multan Sultans didn't give him a chance in the first eight matches. PCB didn't take any action; therefore, the left-arm spinner was included in the last five games, where he took eight wickets at an average of 15.50.

PCB also handed him NOC for Afghanistan T20 League while also allowing him to play in Kashmir Premier League (KPL).

The justification given in this regard is that the other cricketers accompanying the spinner were allowed to play to expose them and were kept under observation.

A former Test cricketer coach of a team is also included in the list of suspicious persons, along with two other cricketers.

According to some circles, reports regarding Asif Afridi in KPL came to light even after suspicions were raised last year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has banned international spinner Asif Afridi for a period of two years from all cricket after he pleaded guilty as charged for two violations under the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Code for Participants.

For the breach of Article 2.4.10, Mr. Afridi was handed a two-year period of ineligibility, while he was given a six-month ban for the violation of Article 2.4.4. Both the periods of ineligibility will run concurrently and will commence from the day of his provisional suspension, which commenced on 12 September 2022.

While reaching its determination on the sanction period, the PCB took into consideration the admission of guilt, expression of remorse, past track record and Asif Afridi’s request that the PCB considers his case compassionately, claiming he had unintentionally breached the Code.

Chair of PCB Management Committee, Mr Najam Sethi: “It gives the PCB no joy to suspend an international cricketer for two years, but we have a zero-tolerance approach towards such offences. As the game’s governing body, we need to make examples, handle such matters robustly and send out strong messages to all cricketers.

“It is bitter fact that corruption poses a threat to our sport as selfish corrupters lure cricketers in different ways and methods. That’s precisely why the PCB has been investing heavily on player education so that they remain vigilant and can help the PCB eradicate this menace by reporting approaches and if, despite all our best efforts to create awareness, a player falls victim to his greed, then the PCB has no sympathy.”

His ban is the same length as Sharjeel. So did he have a meticulous plan to fix?

Seems harsh 2 yr ban for not reporting an approach

Naa. Under sethi, they started this. When a player is approached they dont report themselves. This creates more ambiguity. Players themselves need to report any such approach. This has helped keep the game clean

Players know the rules- it should be increased to 4 years. This rubbish has blighted PK cricket for 4 decades.

They need to be consistent

The guy doesn’t have much support or backing so he gets twice the penelty as players like UA and Nawaz

Left arm spinner Asif Afridi, who was a part of the National T20 cup winning team Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, previously got suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for breaching the anti-corruption code. Now the spinner got banned for two years, as announced by the cricket board yesterday.

In this case, two more players and coach were suspected for breaching the code of conduct whereas one of the coaching staff were seemed to be suspicious as well.

Asif Afridi represented Rawalakot Hawks in the previous edition of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL). From the start of the tournament, the organisers felt something suspicious about the spinner. When asked PCB, the board insisted to let him play, so they can further investigate in order to get some clues.

In the rain-effected match against Jammu Janbaz, Asif Afridi gave away 35 runs in his three-over spell and took only one wicket. He was being monitored before the beginning of the game against Kotli. In the match, Rawalakot suffered a 10-run defeat. Asif came to bat at number three and bowled out in the first delivery. Asif Afridi also gave away 52 runs in his four-over spell without taking a wicket.

After the match, things got pretty suspicious as the event organisers started their brief conversation with the PCB anti-corruption unit officers. Few people were against the decision to include Asif in the squad of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the National T20 cup. Against Central Punjab, he took two wickets and gave away 24 runs in his spell. After that, he didn't play any matches and was immediately suspended.

According to the sources, few players and officials were saved through strong connections. It was also shocking to see such convicted people yet saved by their 'sources' were given big responsibilities in the cricketing setup. When asked from the PCB management, they replied, "this case came under the notice of the previous board officials, we continued our investigations based on the official documents provided to us, and we did not find any proof during our investigation."

Wow,

So Sultans were knowingly playing a suspicious player?

Please don’t tell me who I think it is that might have got away due to ‘strong connections”

I think the ‘p*rchi” tag does not necessarily fit Asif Afridi because he is a decent bowler

But you must question how he emerged in the limelight as soon as Mohammad Rizwan became the captain of Multan Sultans. He is one of his favourite players alongside Khushdil.

From what I can work out from this article,

He hasn’t been banned for not reporting, rather they have determined that he has been playing in a suspicious manner. So he went ahead and did it (fixing).

-Team management suspect a player isn’t playing with the correct ethic.

+PCB and anti corruption unit investigate

+Player admits that he had approaches from fixers but didn’t go ahead with the fix.

Something isn’t adding up…so the suspicion was correct? He was playing against the moral code of conduct as a cricketer?

Look at how accurate Asif Afridi is with his line and length.
