Frank Lampard: VAR handball call 'incompetence at best' | Micah Richards: How's that not clear?

A furious Everton manager Frank Lampard blasted VAR official Chris Kavanagh as "incompetent at best" and a "professional who cannot do his job right" after his side were denied a late penalty in the 1-0 defeat against Manchester City.

Phil Foden's 82nd-minute goal was shortly followed by the ball striking the arm of midfielder Rodri. Referee Paul Tierney had not given a decision on the pitch and VAR official Kavanagh ruled there was no reason to change that.

The fury of the home fans was matched by that of coach Ashley Cole, who was shown a yellow card for his protestations to Tierney after the final whistle.

"There is no doubt, there is no probably to it," said Lampard on whether his side should have been awarded a spot-kick.

"The decision is incredible, incredible, and that loses us the opportunity to get what we deserved.

"That's a VAR call. That's Chris Kavanagh, I spoke to the referee and they know it is a penalty, the question is that is it offside and it wasn't. That's the reason we have VAR. It wouldn't have needed more than five seconds to know it was a penalty. He [Kavanagh] should have either told the referee to give it or told him to go look at it.

"We've lost a point because of a professional who cannot do his job right. You start searching for whys and I can't think why. It is so incompetent to get it wrong.

"Pep will know, Everton fans will know, Man City fans will know, it was the clearest penalty you could give: arm is out - great, below the sleeve - great, I was waiting for the penalty.

"Incompetence at best, at worst who knows? I'll wait for the statement or apology they do when things are wrong but it will mean nothing."

Everton very unlucky last night, but that aside, still look in deep trouble.

Alisher Usmanov: Everton-linked Russian billionaire has assets frozen by EU

The Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who has commercial ties to Everton, has had his assets frozen by the European Union as it announced further sanctions in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Restrictions include a "prohibition from making funds available" and an EU travel ban.

The Usmanov-owned company USM Holdings sponsors Everton's training ground.

Usmanov also has an exclusive naming-rights option on Everton's new stadium.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is the chairman of USM Holdings.

It is not yet clear what, if any, effect the move might have on Everton. The club have been contacted for comment.

In its reasoning, the EU Council said: "Alisher Usmanov is a pro-Kremlin oligarch with particularly close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin".

It added that he "actively supported materially or financially Russian decision-makers responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilisation of Ukraine".

A spokesperson for Usmanov has declined to comment.

Could be going from bad to worse for Everton...

Everton have received an apology from the head of the professional referees body Mike Riley after they were denied a penalty in the 1-0 defeat by Manchester City on Saturday.

The Toffees wrote to the Premier League to complain about the decision when Manchester City midfielder Rodri seemed to use his arm to control the ball.

Neither referee Paul Tierney nor video assistant referee Chris Kavanagh deemed it was worthy of a spot-kick despite complaints from fans and Everton boss Frank Lampard.

Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) boss Riley called both Lampard and Everton chairman Bill Kenwright on Monday to apologise for the incident, which could prove costly to the club's bid to stay in the Premier League.

Everton are 17th in the table, one place and one point above Burnley, who host Leicester in the Premier League on Tuesday (19:45 GMT).

Kavanagh will be the referee for that match.

"We've lost a point because of a professional who cannot do his job right. It is so incompetent to get it wrong," Lampard said following the game at Goodison Park.

<b>Ukraine invasion: Everton suspend commercial sponsorship arrangements with Russian companies</b>

Everton have suspended their commercial sponsorship arrangements with Russian companies owned by Alisher Usmanov following the invasion of Ukraine.

Russian billionaire Usmanov has had his assets frozen by the European Union.

Usmanov-owned USM Holdings, which has Everton owner Farhad Moshiri as its chairman, sponsors the training ground.

Usmanov also has an exclusive naming-rights option on Everton's new stadium which is due to open for the start of the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Digital and telecommunications company Megafon is owned by USM and sponsors Everton women's shirts. The multi-year deal was agreed in October 2020, while Yota, part of the Megafon group, is on the sleeve of the shirt.

"Everyone at Everton remains shocked and saddened by the appalling events unfolding in Ukraine," a club statement said.

"This tragic situation must end as soon as possible, and any further loss of life must be avoided.

"The club can confirm that it has suspended with immediate effect all commercial sponsorship arrangements with the Russian companies USM, Megafon and Yota."

Everton added that it was doing all it can to provide "full support" to Ukrainian defender Vitalii Mykolenko, who joined the Toffees in January.

Mykolenko embraced Manchester City's Ukrainian full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko on the pitch at Goodison Park before Saturday's Premier League match between the teams.

The EU Council said it was freezing Usmanov's assets because he is "a pro-Kremlin oligarch with particularly close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin".

On Tuesday, Usmanov made a statement on the website of the International Fencing Federation, an organisation of which he is president, calling the EU's decision to impose restrictions on him "unfair" and pledged to "use all legal means to protect my honour and reputation".

On Saturday, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich gave "stewardship and care" of Chelsea to its foundation trustees following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss claims Abramovich "wants to get rid of Chelsea quickly" after the threat of sanctions was raised in Parliament and has been offered the chance to buy the club.

The United Kingdom government is yet to sanction Abramovich or Usmanov.

Manchester United terminated their sponsorship deal with Russia's national airline Aeroflot last week following the country's invasion of Ukraine.

Everton football club has cut ties with its Russian sponsors, including USM which is owned by oligarch Alisher Usmanov.

The Merseyside club has also cut ties with Megafon, which is the second-largest mobile phone operator and the third-largest telecom operator in Russia and smartphone manufacturer Yota.

Currently 2-0 up against Boreham Wood in the FA Cup.

Horrible season so far at Goodison Park.

The first half was very stodgy and uneventful. Everton struggled to break down Boreham Wood until the hour mark.

Lampard as manager does not exactly appear to be working wonders thus far.

They are really missing Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s creativity and goalscoring prowess up top. He keeps getting injured.

Everton manager Frank Lampard says the club's main sponsor Alisher Usmanov being sanctioned "hasn't impacted" the squad.

The club had already suspended all dealings with Usmanov's businesses, including USM's sponsorship of the training ground.

The sanctions came on Thursday due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"I haven't had any conversations on that - and it hasn't impacted on my side at all," said Lampard.

The restrictive measures were brought in as the government said the oligarch had "significant interests in the UK and close links to the Kremlin".

As well as suspending USM's sponsorship, Everton paused Usmanov's smartphone company Yota's sponsorship of the women's team and MegaFon's deal at Goodison Park.

USM paid £30 million to buy the first option for the naming rights on the new ground being built on the Bramley-Moore Dock.

Ahead of their match against Tottenham on Monday, Lampard added: "I don't have concerns and by that I mean I don't have enough information to comment on the stadium.

"My focus has to be on the pitch and the job I'm here to do."

Everton are currently 4-0 down away at Spurs.

What a mess they are in.

Relegation dogfight looms for the rest of the season unless they turn things around quickly.

A laughably bad performance from Everton tonight with gaps in their defence that a fleet of buses could drive through. They have been completely overrun by Spurs and their run-in looks appallingly difficult as well.

Another loss. This time at home to Wolves, 1-0

Meanwhile Leeds and Watford win and that adds to the pressure on Everton.

Everton are terrible.

The truth that is they need to replace Lampard.

Everton are terrible.

They play us next, it's a huge game for them

Lampard hasn't got things going, the problem is if they sack him after only a handful of games where do they go from here?

I’ll be rooting for you to beat them :)))

Yes maybe a bit too late for another change, but Lampard is not the guy and he was the wrong appointment. 6 league games so far and he has lost 5 of them.

Their run in also looks horrific — examining the fixtures, they could conceivably lose most or all of their remaining games, and some of them (Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal) could be very heavy defeats as well.

Frank Lampard: Everton crowd have every right to boo team off at Goodison Park

Frank Lampard said Everton fans have every right to boo the team off after his team slipped to another defeat at Goodison Park.

Lampard's Everton side have lost five of their six Premier League matches under his watch and had no answer to Conor Coady's header on 49 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Wolves.

Frustrations were clear to see in Everton's chasing of the game as Jonjoe Kenny picked up two yellow cards with 12 minutes to play and the Toffees were roundly booed off at the full-time whistle.

Everton's 22-point haul from 26 matches is the lowest tally in their history at this stage of the season and they are now only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

"I've played for 20 years and I have seen plenty of reactions from crowds," said Lampard.

"I can't stand there and say 'Thanks very much for helping us play so well against Brentford and Leeds and Manchester City' - and deserve more in that game - and not expect that the fans that want the team to do well, want the team to stay up and get wins, will not have reactions."

"I don't put an emphasis on Goodison Park, I want to get points everywhere," added the Toffees boss.

"It wasn't more worrying as Tottenham. Tottenham wasn't a good performance. Today in the first half we were the stronger team.

"The goal changed the whole feeling of the game and in the stadium, that is understandable the position the club is in. That's been coming a long time.

"We have 12 games to go now so we can't get stuck in the rut of looking at this game alone.

"We lost against a good team in a tight match with 10 men for the last period when you really want to push."

Everton and England footballer Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been fined and handed three penalty points for speeding in his Lamborghini.

The 24-year-old striker admitted driving the sports car at 58mph in a 50mph zone along the A533 in Cheshire on 18 August last year.

As well as the points on his licence, the player was ordered to pay a £900 fine, £620 costs and a £90 surcharge at Chester Magistrates Court.

He had been due to stand trial after he initially pleaded not guilty to exceeding the speed limit and failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver.

But Barry Warburton, defending, said he would be changing his plea to exceeding the speed limit to guilty.

Michael O'Kane, prosecuting, said no evidence would be offered in respect of the second charge.

In the hearing, which lasted under 10 minutes, the court was told Calvert-Lewin already had three penalty points on his licence from a speeding matter on 28 February 2020.

Everton 1-0 Newcastle: Frank Lampard suffers broken hand celebrating dramatic Toffees' winner

Everton boss Frank Lampard said he broke his hand celebrating his side's stoppage-time victory over Newcastle - but admitted he would suffer one every week if it meant similar results.

Alex Iwobi's winner came in the 99th minute came after team-mate Allan was sent off on 83 minutes in a game delayed by a second-half protest.

"I did it in celebration for the goal," he said as his side moved three points clear of the relegation zone.

"I just connected with something"

He added: "I didn't punch anything, but I realised two minutes later my hand was shaking and aching. I will take it for the three points."

The win was only Everton's second in 13 matches, but came after a controversial sending off for Allan, which saw referee Craig Pawson overturn his decision after he initially awarded a yellow card.

Lampard said he was "frustrated" with the decision, especially after his team were denied a handball during a 1-0 defeat by Manchester City last month, which led to an apology from referee's chief Mike Riley.

"We now lose Allan for three games, let's hope the Referees' Association can say we got that wrong [too]," said Lampard.

But he said was pleased by what he called "a night of togetherness and fight" at an emotional Goodison Park.

He also revealed that the win came after chairman Bill Kenwright delivered a "passionate" speech to the players at the training ground on Wednesday.

"I don't think it's my formations or cleverness that will keep us up. It's part of the bigger picture, but it's people and the players that will keep us up, and the fans when we get together.

"I thought the start of the game was a bit special. I know I'm new to this, an evening game at Goodison. You could feel the crowd, maybe they had a couple of pints of Guinness for St Patrick's Day. Fair play we need that. We need them behind us.

"If we get out of this it's together, the fans and the players played their part."

Of Kenwright's visit, he added: "The chairman came to the training ground yesterday of his own accord, and delivered a talk to the lads for half an hour and that's not normal.

"A lot of chairman are corporate, but our chairman grew up an Everton fan. He takes the stick, but he and [chief executive] Denise Barrett-Baxendale and [board member] Graeme Sharpe were there.

"I speak to the players all the time, and it's not an easy audience, 25 young men, but the chairman showed his passion for the club. It was a big deal for me and us."

A 99th minute winner to blow the roof off Goodison. Oh how Everton needed that.

Everton out of the FA Cup.

Thrashed by a solid Crystal Palace side.

Lampard tactically poor again and his players don’t look interested.

<b>Frank Lampard: Everton boss questions players' mentality after FA Cup loss</b>

Frank Lampard has questioned whether his players have the right mentality to play for Everton after they were heavily beaten by Crystal Palace in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Everton sit one place above the Premier League relegation zone and have picked up only four wins in their last 12 games in all competitions.

Despite a bright start at Selhurst Park, they conceded two goals either side of half-time as Palace won 4-0 on Sunday.

"There is only so much you can keep trying to butter someone up to give them confidence," manager Lampard said.

"We are playing at the cut-throat end of football here. This is a cup quarter-final to get to Wembley and if you haven't got the confidence to play, you can quickly flip it and say have you got the guts to play?

"Sorry, excuse me, but that is the football reality. If you fall somewhere in the middle then don't worry about it."

First-half goals from Marc Guehi and Jean-Philippe Mateta put Palace in full control, before Wilfried Zaha and Will Hughes secured the win.

"We didn't play that badly today and Palace didn't play that well and we lost 4-0 because of a lack of confidence and a lack of what I just said," Lampard added.

"It wasn't tactics. Tactics showed in the first 20 minutes Palace couldn't get out of their half."

Everton last reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 2015-16 and have not won a major trophy since their victory in the final in 1995.

"Maybe it is not Everton's time, or my time as Everton manager to be there. It is Palace's time. The job is to stay up and that is the reality of it," Lampard said.

"If you offer any Evertonian - do you want to win today and go to Wembley or stay up? We know the answer. We performed at 70% and that is not good enough."

Another loss.
Another sending off.
Another abysmal performance.

Everton are lucky that at the moment there actually are 3 worse teams than them in the Premier League.

Poor side with an appalling manager.

Another good result for the other teams in the bottom 5.

Hopefully Everton keep losing and eventually go down.

Yet another defeat.

3-2 to Burnley who are now only 1 point behind Everton.

Things looking bleak for EFC.

First benitez and now lampard, poor recruitment , think its too late to change, gotta hope for the best either way think frank will be gone end of season

Everton haven’t won an away match in the league since August 2021, they can’t buy a point at the moment and their run-in of fixtures looks truly horrendous, they’re in massive trouble.

Sean Dyche told Burnley players Everton 'don't know how to win' to inspire Turf Moor comeback in survival fight

Sean Dyche revealed he told his Burnley players Everton "don't know how to win" as they plotted their comeback to inflict a seventh defeat in 10 games on the Toffees.

Burnley trailed 2-1 at the break courtesy of a pair of Richarlison penalties and Dyche's dressing-room message to his players was clear - to take advantage of the visitors' leaky defence and low confidence after a punishing run of away form.

Everton have not won a Premier League game on the road since August but looked like breaking that eight-month record until Jay Rodriguez and Maxwel Cornet struck in the second half to give Burnley a late victory. It puts them a point off safety and gives the Toffees the same cushion outside the bottom three.

Dyche told Sky Sports: "I've been down there, I know what it's like and every season there have been tough patches for us. It's hard to explain, but sometimes you sense that a team might have lost how to win a game. I said to them at half time 'I'm not sure these know how to win a game, away from home particularly'.

"I told them we've got to play on that mentality - we do it by playing forward with better quality and being more aggressive in our play. Our passing and trying to get into the front areas of the pitch wasn't glorious but there were patches and enough patches where we found three goals and I'm pleased with that.

"I think they had taken six points from 42 away from home before this game and conceded 49 over the season so far, so we felt there might be that edge that we could attack them maybe, possibly more freely. I don't think it was free-flowing, but we had moments that counted, of course, and I reminded them of that at half-time."

<b>Everton’s run-in</b>

On the evidence of last night then their next five games in particular will be extremely tough.

Everton have a pretty horrendous run of fixtures coming up and they are lacking momentum on and off the field… meanwhile Burnley are doing well in the post-Dyche era, have a relatively favourable run-in and are starting to knock on the door; and Leeds whilst not over the line themselves do have points on the board & are likely one more win and a draw away from safety.

For me Everton are now favourites to finish 18th and join Watford & Norwich next season in the Championship.

Hopefully Everton will be relegated its been high time they've enjoyed the free ride in EPL with kamikaze approach

Everton will contact the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to query why a challenge they feel should have led to a penalty was not reviewed further in the Merseyside derby.

With the game goalless, forward Anthony Gordon went over in the area following a challenge by Liverpool's Joel Matip.

Eight minutes after the incident Andy Robertson scored Liverpool's opener with Divock Origi sealing the 2-0 win.

The defeat left Everton in the relegation zone with six games to go.

Frank Lampard's side are two points below Burnley, who occupy the final position of safety, though the Toffees have a game in hand.

Lampard suggested post match that a penalty would have been given if the challenge had been made on a Liverpool player.

"It was a penalty, you don't get them at Anfield," he said.

"If that was Mohamed Salah at the Kop end, I think [the referee] gives that. It was a foul on Anthony."

Earlier this season PGMOL apologised to Everton after they were denied a penalty in their 1-0 defeat by Manchester City despite midfielder Rodri appearing to use his hand to control the ball.

5 points adrift of safety and in real trouble despite having games in hand.

Burnley's upturn in form has hit Everton hard.

A sad time in this storied institution's grand history.

Dodgy owner with no business acumen making bad mistake before even bigger ones.

The trajectory has been eerily like Sunderland.

They are relegated, it's just a matter of when, not if :(

Burnley's miraculous turnaround in form is really spelling danger for Everton, they'll need some miracles of their own.

Everton’s season and their prospects of survival probably come down to an away match against Watford on 11th May and then a home game against Brentford on 15th May. There is also a home game against Palace on 19th May.

Brentford with Eriksen are a classy side and Palace are in really good form at the moment.

They may or may not beat Watford.

If they lose to Chelsea today, I think Frank’s Everton are pretty much done.

Everton fully deserved to win that, they were strong going forward and Pickford was immense in goal. They just wanted it more. A very poor show and sluggish performance from Chelsea.

Crazy team - they've recently beaten Man Utd and Chelsea yet keep losing to the so-called weaker teams.

Now only 2 points behind Leeds and Burnley.

Massive win for Everton with only 22% possession but who cares 68 year stay in top flight at stake

Everton climbed out of the Premier League relegation places by holding on for a hard-fought victory over Leicester City at King Power Stadium.

A stunning volley by Vitaliy Mykolenko and Mason Holgate's header gave Frank Lampard's side their third win in five games and ensured they remain in control of their destiny with four Premier League games to play.

Mykolenko finished superbly from Alex Iwobi's cross after six minutes but Patson Daka capitalised on Yerry Mina's attempted header back to Jordan Pickford to draw Leicester level five minutes later.

The unmarked Holgate was quickest to react after Kasper Schmeichel kept out Richarlison's initial header from a corner to restore the Toffees' lead after 30 minutes.

Forced to chase another equaliser, Leicester dominated for large periods in the second half - but they found England number one Pickford once again in inspired form.

Having made one of the saves of the season against Chelsea last Sunday, the Toffees goalkeeper produced sublime stops to deny Nampalys Mendy and Harvey Barnes to protect his side's narrow lead.

Everton moved up to 16th with victory, one point above Burnley and Leeds United, who lost 2-1 at Arsenal to drop to 18th.

The Toffees have played one game fewer than their relegation rivals.

Meanwhile, defeat extends Leicester's winless Premier League run to five games and leaves Brendan Rodgers' side 14th in the table.

BBC

Everton I think will survive to fight another top flight season now.

Lampard has led them to two massive wins back-to-back against Leicester and Chelsea. Jordan Pickford in goal has been outstanding & in world-class form.

They also have some very winnable games left out of their five in hand, such as two home fixtures at Fortress Goodison, not to mention an away meeting with the completely hopeless Watford which with all respect due is basically a bye at this point — so, long story short, there are plenty of points available to them.

Congratulations Everton.

So even an attacking player like Lampard has to revert to 5-4-1 to save his side from relegation that's why they say football teams are built on defense

<b>Watford 0-0 Everton</b>

Everton's Premier League fate remains in the balance after Frank Lampard's side were held to a goalless draw by already relegated Watford at Vicarage Road.

The Toffees moved two points above the bottom three with three games remaining - having played one game fewer than 18th-placed Leeds United, who were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea.

Everton went closest to breaking the deadlock but Ben Foster produced a superb save from Richarlison's deflected strike shortly after half-time, while Demarai Gray shot wide from close range.

Watford, whose immediate return to the Championship was confirmed by defeat at Crystal Palace last weekend, failed to land an attempt on target and remain 19th.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/60724994

A disappointing result for Frank’s Everton side at already relegated Watford.

The Toffees could have pulled decisively clear of the drop zone with a win, but were held to a turgid draw.

Not safe yet.

Everton 2-3 Brentford.

An absolutely shocking performance from Everton today and a disastrous result.

Finished the match with nine men after collecting a couple of reckless straight red cards.

Brentford dominated and could have scored double what they ended up with.

Lampard’s Everton side still in relegation trouble.

Self destruction once again by Everton.

No discipline at all.

Big match at home to Palace coming up on Thursday.

Everton getting hit by injuries and suspensions, if they lose at home to Palace on Thursday then they could be in real trouble because they travel to Arsenal on the final day and with their infamous away record they will probably lose that one.

<b>James Tarkowski: Burnley defender in talks with Everton</b>

Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski is in talks with Premier League club Everton.

Tarkowski's contract at Turf Moor expires at the end of this month and he had already resolved to leave, even before the Clarets' relegation.

A number of clubs have expressed an interest in signing the 29-year-old, including Aston Villa.

However, BBC Sport understands Everton are now in pole position to sign the defender.

Tarkowski has been capped twice by England and has made 219 appearances for the Lancashire club since signing for them in February 2016.

It is promising to be a busy summer at Burnley, who are closing in on appointing former Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany as their new manager.

Burnley have been trying to resolve some work permit issues, although it is thought the red tape is close to being sorted.

Striker Wout Weghorst, a £12m arrival from Wolfsburg in January, has been the subject of interest from a number of clubs, including Turkish outfit Besiktas.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has apologised to the club's fans for mistakes made during a "challenging" season that nearly led to relegation.

The Toffees needed a 3-2 win over Crystal Palace in their penultimate match to avoid the drop.

That is despite is despite the club spending more than £500m on new players since Moshiri's arrival in 2016.

"It has not been good enough and we need to do better," Moshiri wrote in an open letter to Everton supporters.

"Mistakes have been made and for that I want to apologise to all of you."

Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright have faced criticism from fans this season for the way they run the club, which included the unpopular appointment of former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez last June.

Benitez was sacked in January after a run of one win in 16 games and replaced by Frank Lampard who, after a difficult start, secured their top-flight status for a 68th successive season.

Moshiri says an ongoing strategic review, which has led to the appointments of Lampard and director of football Kevin Thelwell, is evidence of the board's determination to learn from past mistakes.

The British-Iranian businessman also reaffirmed his commitment to deliver a "fully-funded" new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, which is currently under construction, while pledging to not make the same mistakes in the transfer market that led to the club posting combined losses of £372m over three seasons.

"The stadium alone will not help us achieve our objectives and we are committed to not making the same mistakes again - including how we have not always spent significant amounts of money wisely," he said.

"You have given us incredible support that helped us over the line when we most needed it, and we must repay that support and show that lessons have been learned."

Moshiri also revealed Everton have offered Ukrainian club Dynamo Kyiv a friendly match at Goodison Park to raise funds for Ukrainians during the ongoing conflict in the country.

The Toffees signed full-back Vitalii Mykolenko, a Ukraine international, from Dynamo Kyiv in January.

criticised after announcing gambling firm sponsorship deal

Everton's announcement of a club-record multi-year sponsorship deal with a gambling firm has been criticised as "saddening" by a prominent campaigner.

Stake.com becomes the club's main sponsor and its name will appear on both the men's and women's shirts.

Premier League clubs could face a ban on having gambling sponsors on their shirts when the UK government updates its gambling laws this month.

Last season, nine top-flight clubs had betting firms as a main shirt sponsor.

Norwich City were the only Premier League club who did not have a betting partner among the competition's 20 teams in 2021-22.

Gambling campaigner James Grimes of The Big Step - which aims to end all gambling advertising and sponsorship in football - said: "Gambling sponsorship is unpopular, unhealthy and strongly rumoured to be on its way out of football. So for Everton to announce this partnership now is massively tone deaf."

He added: "It's saddening that the self-titled 'people's club' is putting profits before its own supporters - especially young fans, who face a season being unable to wear the same shirt as their heroes while encouraged to use addictive online casinos."

Sources told BBC Sport that a ban on gambling shirt sponsors in the Premier League was included in a draft government white paper with law changes expected to be announced in June.

Two years ago, Everton chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale said "in an ideal world" the club would not have a gambling sponsor on their shirts but added they had to consider commercial needs.

A recent YouGov survey reported 1.4 million people in Britain were being harmed by gambling with a further 1.5 million at risk.

But the Premier League and EFL maintain there is no evidence to show a causal link between gambling sponsorship and problem gambling.

Everton have posted losses of £372m in the past three seasons - £170m of which they attribute to Covid-19.

The Toffees secured their Premier League status with one game remaining last season, ending the campaign four points above the relegation places.

The club had been sponsored by car firm Cazoo for the past two years but ended that partnership early to agree the deal with Stake.com.

Earlier this year the club suspended their Russian sponsorship deals with USM and other companies owned or part-owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who was sanctioned by the UK government following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Peter Kenyon
Peter Kenyon ran Manchester United between 2000 and 2003, and Chelsea from 2003 to 2009
Former Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon is leading a consortium hoping to buy Everton.

The club's owner Farhad Moshiri is known to be open to investment options around the funding of the new stadium.

However he has not ruled out selling equity stakes in the club.

Now a director of football consultancy business Opto Advisers, Kenyon has worked on several deals in recent years and was linked with a bid for Newcastle United before their Saudi takeover.

The group led by the former Chelsea chief is understood to include wealthy US-based businessmen Maciek Kaminski and John Thornton.

As first reported by the Telegraph, talks are still at an early stage.

Last week Moshiri apologised to the club's fans for mistakes made during a "challenging" season that nearly led to relegation from the Premier League.

Moshiri also reaffirmed his commitment to deliver a "fully funded" £500m stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, which is currently under construction, while pledging to avoid the mistakes in the transfer market that led to Everton posting combined losses of £372m over three seasons.

Moshiri has pumped more than £600m into the club since he first bought shares in Everton in 2016. He increased his stake in the club to 94.1% in January.

Last season Everton suspended their lucrative sponsorship deals with Russian companies USM, Megafon and Yota, who are all owned or part-owned by billionaire Alisher Usmanov, a close business partner with Moshiri.

Russian businessman Usmanov had his assets frozen by the European Union following the invasion of Ukraine.

USM had paid £30m for an exclusive naming rights option on the new 52,000-seat stadium, which is set to open in the 2024-25 season.

Everton, Kenyon and a spokesman for Moshiri declined to comment when approached by the BBC.

The Toffees faced a relegation battle last season under Frank Lampard, the former Chelsea midfielder who succeeded Rafael Benitez as manager in February.

They were only assured of survival after winning their penultimate match of the campaign, eventually finishing 16th and four points clear of the drop.

In March the club posted losses of more than £110m for a third straight season, taking the total to £372m since the 2019-20 season. Everton attribute £170m of the £372m to loss of income as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright have received criticism from fans over how the club is run, including the unpopular appointment of former Liverpool manager Benitez last summer.
