Pakistan and Netherlands will play their inaugural bilateral ODI series in August when Rotterdam will host the three ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches on 16, 18 and 21. The two sides have previously met in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups 1996 and 2003, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 with Pakistan winning the three matches.

The three Super League ODIs were earlier planned in July 2020, but had to be postponed following the Covid-19 outbreak.

Hosts Netherlands have won two of their 10 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches, while Pakistan have a 50 per cent record in the 12 matches. The event will determine which seven highest-placed sides plus hosts India will qualify directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

PCB Director – International Zakir Khan: “We are pleased that with the support of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond (KNCB), we have been able to reschedule the series, which is important to the growth and development of cricket in Netherlands as well as to the two teams’ chances of progressing directly to the 2023 World Cup.

“Our men’s national cricket team had an excellent 2021-22 season and I am confident they will build on the momentum to entertain expat Pakistanis and the Dutch spectators with good cricket. This series will also help KNCB attract new and young audiences towards the game.”

Series schedule:

16 Aug – 1st ODI; VOC Cricket Ground, Rotterdam
18 Aug – 2nd ODI; VOC Cricket Ground, Rotterdam
21 Aug – 3rd ODI; VOC Cricket Ground, Rotterdam

Good exposure for Netherlands. They are the 2nd strongest associate nation currently.

Lahore, 3 August 2022: Pakistan today announced its 16-player squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League fixtures against the Netherlands from 16-21 August and a 15-member side for the ACC T20 Asia Cup, which will be played in the United Arab Emirates from 27 August to 11 September.

Fast bowler Naseem Shah has been named in both the squads in place of Hasan Ali, while Salman Ali Agha, who toured England in 2021 for the ODIs, has been recalled. Shaheen Shah Afridi has been retained in the ODI and T20I squads, and his rehabilitation programme will be overseen by the team trainer and physiotherapist, who will also decide on his return to international cricket.

There will be five changes from the Netherlands ODI squad to the ACC T20 Asia Cup side. Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Haris, Salman Ali Agha and Zahid Mehmood will be replaced by Asif Ali, Haider Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed and Usman Qadir.

Squad:

Pakistan squad for Netherlands ODIs - Babar Azam (captain) (Central Punjab), Shadab Khan (vice-captain) (Northern), Abdullah Shafique (Balochistan), Fakhar Zaman (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Haris Rauf (Northern), Imam-ul-Haq (Balochistan), Khushdil Shah (Southern Punjab), Mohammad Haris (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Mohammad Nawaz (Northern), Mohammad Rizwan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Mohammad Wasim Jnr (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Naseem Shah (Southern Punjab), Salman Ali Agha (Southern Punjab), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Shahnawaz Dahani (Sindh) and Zahid Mehmood (Sindh)

Player Support Personnel: Mansoor Rana (manager), Saqlain Mushtaq (head coach), Shahid Aslam (assistant to head coach), Mohammad Yousuf (batting coach), Shaun Tait (bowling coach), Drikus Simmon (trainer/strength & conditioning coach), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Abdul Majeed (fielding coach), Ibrahim Badees (media and digital manager), Lt Col (retd) Asif Mahmood (team security manager), Talha Ejaz (team analyst), Malang Ali (team masseur) and Dr Najeebullah Soomro (team doctor). Col Muhammad Imran will replace Lt Col Asif Mahmood as team security manager for the ACC T20I Asia Cup.

Chief selector Muhammad Wasim: “We have only made changes that were necessary. Both the competitions are important for us and, as such, we have picked our best available players in consultation with the captain and head coach.

“Hasan has been given a break from international cricket and he has been replaced by Naseem Shah. He is express fast and can give further impetus to the fast bowling department, which already boasts Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shahnawaz Dahani. Naseem has not played any international white-ball cricket, but he has demonstrated with the red-ball that he is an attacking option with good pace and controlled swing.

“Salman Ali Agha has been recalled to the ODI side after he performed well in the past two Pakistan Cup tournaments, averaging 40.33 and 48.8, respectively. He also gives Babar Azam an additional bowling option.”

The training camp for the players will be held in Lahore from 6-11 August, during which they will also play two 50-over matches. The side will depart for Amsterdam in the wee hours of Friday, 12 August. T20I players will join the squad in Dubai for the ACC T20 Asia Cup on 22 August.

Zahid Mehmood is still a baffling selection to me. Don't feel he is a good bowler. No Iftikhar Ahmed in ODIs is also surprising.

Naseem Shah in ODIs is a gamble considering he has only played 4 List-A matches. But I guess if you are going to debut him in this format, it might as well be against Netherlands. In my opinion though Dahani should be given a chance in-place of Hasan Ali in the starting line-up.

Salman Ali Agha is a poor cricketer

He looked like headless chicken whenever he has played in PSL. Kamran Ghulam is much better

Why is Shan Masood be continuously be ignored?

Because Mohammad Wasim is obsessed with the idea of people remembering him as the guy who unearthed so much new talent. Years from now when people ask him what he did as chief-selector he wants to have enough players he can point towards, whom he provided with their first break. Eventhough many of them would have been selected anyway by any other chief-selector.

Shan Masood does not fit that description sadly. Eventhough he considerably improved as a limited-overs batter in the last PSL and this year's Vitality Blast...and has one of the highest List A averages in Pak domestic cricket.

Well it should be an experimental series. Haider Ali is a mind boggling exclusion.

Shaheen has no buiseness playing any of these matches. He should sit out all 3.

Naseem, Dahani, Waseem, A Shafique, Agha should play all 3 games.

Wasim’s logic is rubbish

KL rahul is an opener yet he plays in the middle order in ODIs. Sometimes team has to experiment when you have minnow level middle order.

Shan Masood in the middle-order would be a far better choice than Haider Ali, Saud Shakeel or his new boy Salman Ali Agha, who has so far done nothing to show that he is good enough to play international cricket.

Mohammad Wasim on why not pick youngsters for the ODI series vs NED?

"When people speak of giving chances to youngsters then that is applicable in a scenario where you have a well settled side with experienced players in it but when you look at this squad, you will not see that many experienced players in it"

"None of these players has played 100 ODIs so it is a young side; When you have a side which has experienced player than you go towards rotation of the side"

"This squad does have some players who haven't played much or not played ODIs at all such as Abdullah Shafique so we can look at giving him a chance to play also"

He is not wrong. Pakistan also need to figure out their middle order issues and their first choice bowling attack. They have hardly played any ODI's since 2019 World Cup.

They can afford to experiment in T20's though but not until the WC is over.

As for everyone pining for Ghulam & Shan Masood, look at their List A strike rates. More accumulators in the middle order doesn't make any sense if the goal is to be a more modern side.

Imo, the reason so many 1st choice players are picked here is because it probably is a nice vacation. There's no cricketing justification and it's ok (kinda).

I really doubt half of these big names would've played if Pakistan was hosting instead.

We just should make sure the new guys should play as much as possible while Shaheen who desperately needs a rest shouldn't play at all.

Netherlands bound squad to face Pakistan Shaheens before departure

Lahore, 4 August 2022:

Babar Azam-led Pakistan ODI squad will face Pakistan Shaheens twice in a seven-day long training camp in Lahore. Sindh middle-order batter Saud Shakeel will lead Pakistan Shaheens in the two 50-over games on 7 and 10 August at the LCCA Ground.

92-run defeat for Shaheens

In response to the target of 291 runs set by the Netherland-bound Pakistan ODI squad, Shaheens were bowled out for 198 with Mohammad Nawaz taking 4 wickets

Abdullah Shafique scored 44, Mohammad Haris and Abdulwahid Bangalzai scored 27 and 27 runs respectively

Babar Azam speaking to the press today:

"After consultation with the coach and selectors, the best team has been selected. The Asia Cup is immediately after the Netherlands tour, so there is no possibility of a change in the team"

"Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez will be missed in the upcoming Asia Cup but Asif Ali, Khushdil Shah and Iftikhar Ahmed are players of these numbers and they have performed well. We will utilize Shadab Khan's batting form and will look to have strong batting depth"

On Imad:

"Currently, Mohammad Nawaz is performing well in white-ball cricket and has won us matches, the way he is performing, he must continue, however, Pakistan will definitely include Imad in the team whenever required.

On Shaheen Shah Afridi:

"We are carrying him because both of our doctors are traveling with us and they will look after them. Asia Cup and T20 World Cup are also after the series, we are trying to make him ready as soon as possible. If fit, we are trying him to play one game of the Netherlands"

Don't you think the players were depressed, the workload was more?) So won't it be a good idea if you people play only two formats?" a journalist asked.

"It depends on your fitness, I don't think we should limit ourselves to two formats. Do you think I have become old?"

"The workload is much more," the journalist added. "I don't think so. If the load is more then we will increase our fitness levels"

Hopefully Babar gives chance to Dahani,Naseem,Wasim Jnr and Haris.

Certainly sounds like he will. Looks like the plan is for Shaheen to sit out minimum 2 matches too and only play 1 if he is fit.

I hope Haris gets a shot and showcase his abilities.

I hope Shaheen plays the last match becouse if they do get a 2 nil lead they could potentially rest him for the 3rd game which then will give another chance to the pacers. Its very important that Dahani or Naseem take thier chance.

Fear of losing against Netherlands :ma

They should have take Shaheen s to play against Netherlands and send the main team to UAE early to prepare for Asia cup.

If they had a fear of losing then babar would have said he will play 3 games.

Thiers no better preparation than actually playing against a opponent even if its less fancied team.

Lol why is Babar even mentioning Malik and Hafeez :)) nice way to show faith in the middle order that you state you are missing two 40 year olds

I honestly think the real reason for naming so many 1st choice players is because it probably is seen as a nice vaccation in Europe.

Anyway, they now need to play the new guys who are there as much as possible.

The middle-order is extremely weak. It’s pretty much Babar, Rizwan and Fakhar, and then nothing.

This really is the youngest team we have had in a very long time.

Only Babar, Rizwan, Nawaz and Fakhar could be considered 'seniors'. To an extent Shaheen, Shadab and Imam are joining that group in terms of experience - but are very young.

Yeah a lot of these players haven't even played 20 ODI's like Rauf, Khushdil etc.

For all the talks of bench strength, the core of the team itself is fairly young & don't have a lot of matches under their belt yet.

I think this is a good tour for players like Salman/Haris/Dahani/Naseem etc to show what they can do.

The squads have been finalised for the upcoming three-match ODI series between Netherlands and Pakistan.

The crucial Super League series will commence in Rotterdam on Tuesday, with Netherlands handing a recall to experienced wicketkeeper-batter Wesley Barresi at the age of 38.

Baressi hasn't played international cricket for his country since June 2019, but earns a call-up with a host of first choice players away in England participating in The Hundred.

Young all-rounder Arnav Jain earns his inaugural place in a senior Netherlands squad, while Scott Edwards will take charge of his first full series following the recent retirement of Pieter Seelaar.

Babar Azam will lead a strong Pakistan side that contains a bevy of fast-bowling options, including star quick Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah.

Babar has indicated Afridi may be used sparingly during the ODI series, with the towering pacer recovering from the knee injury that forced him to miss the second Test against Sri Lanka and with the Asia Cup on the horizon later this month.

"We're looking long term at his fitness and health," Babar said recently of Afridi.

"We want him to play a game against Netherlands if he's fit and be ready for the Asia Cup."

Netherlands squad: Scott Edwards (c), Musa Ahmad, Shariz Ahmad, Wesley Barresi, Logan van Beek, Tom Cooper, Aryan Dutt, Arnav Jain, Viv Kingma, Ryan Klein, Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Tim Pringle, Max O'Dowd, Vikram Singh

Pakistan squad: Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan, Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Imam-ul-Haq, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Afridi, Shahnawaz Dahani, Zahid Mehmood

Netherlands v Pakistan Super League series schedule:

First ODI: 16 August, Rotterdam, 11:00am local
Second ODI: 18 August, Rotterdam, 11:00am local
Third ODI: 21 August, Rotterdam, 11:00am local

Rotterdam (Netherlands) (AFP) – Pakistan will look to collect crucial World Cup qualifying points when they tackle the Netherlands in a three-match ODI series from Tuesday but will have a wary eye on the fitness of star bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The 22-year-old paceman suffered a knee injury on the recent tour of Sri Lanka, a worrying setback with the Asia Cup -- and a meeting with old rivals India -- coming up at the end of the month.

Pakistan team bosses do not want to overload a fast bowler who has already played 97 times across all three formats since his international debut just four years ago.

"We're taking a couple of doctors with us to take care of Shaheen and want him to play a game against Netherlands to see if he's fit and ready for the Asia Cup," said Pakistan skipper Babar Azam.

"But we have 11 trump cards. Each of them can be match winners on their day. I have faith in every one of them, whether batters or bowlers."

The series in Rotterdam was postponed due to Covid in 2020.

It forms part of the 13-nation Super League from where the top seven teams plus hosts India will qualify for the 2023 World Cup.

Pakistan are currently third with 90 points, having beaten a formidable Australia 2-1 in their last ODI series at home.

Failure to make the top seven would mean having to negotiate a perilous route through a qualifying competition.

"There are important Super League points at stake which we can't lose," said Azam who may be stunned to find Europe baking in a heatwave.

"I think the conditions will be similar to England. The weather will be cooler so we have practiced with the air conditioning on indoors, perhaps that helps simulate the conditions," he said Thursday on the team's departure for Europe.

Recall for 38-year-old

The two teams have only played three one-day internationals -- all in multi-national events at the 1996 (Pakistan) and 2003 (South Africa) World Cups and 2002 Champions Trophy (Sri Lanka).

Pakistan won all three.

After qualifying for the Twenty20 World Cup to be played in Australia later this year, the Netherlands are seeking a huge lift in their 50-over fortunes.

They are placed last in the Super League, having won only two of their 16 matches with one no-result and 13 defeats.

Those two wins -- against Ireland -- followed 12 straight losses in series against Afghanistan, New Zealand, West Indies and England.

England also smashed a world record total of 498-4 against them in June.

But new skipper Scott Edwards believes playing against bigger nations has helped his young team.

"ODI cricket is still a benchmark for Associates," said Edwards, who replaced Pieter Seelaar as skipper in June.

"We have got a lot of young cricketers coming through who have got exposure against England and New Zealand. I am excited for the next two, three years.

"We play Pakistan which is another opportunity to face world-class bowlers and batters and that is a huge preparation for us to fine-tune our skills for the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.

"It's been an awesome summer for the players for this opportunity to play these bigger nations. There is a little bit of shame that we haven't got some wins on the board."

Pakistan have dropped out of form fast bowler Hasan Ali who is replaced by rookie pacer Naseem Shah while Shahnawaz Dahani, Haris Rauf and Mohammad Wasim Junior are the other quicks in the squad.

The Netherlands, meanwhile, have recalled 38-year-old all-rounder Wesley Barresi after a three-year absence.

After the opening game on Tuesday, the sides meet again on Thursday and Sunday.

Is this series going to be televised internationally?

Or is it just the usual with nearly every Pak series we find out just before the game starts.

I asked the same question I know the matches are on PTV and Geo Super both but what about UK

Babar Azam-led Pakistan ODI squad is all set to feature in the first-ever bilateral series against Netherlands commencing from Tuesday, 16 August in Rotterdam. Fourth-ranked Pakistan will face the host side again on 18 and 21 August.

The three-match series is part of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League where the visiting side occupies fifth spot with 90 points. Babar’s side will be aiming to win all three matches to grab second position in the points table.

A couple of milestones are on the cards for Pakistan’s premier players. Number one ranked ODI player Babar Azam needs one more century to become the only Pakistan captain to score 10 tons in international cricket. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan requires 18 more runs to complete 1,000 ODI runs.

Imam-ul-Haq, who trails his skipper Babar on second spot in the ICC batters’ rankings, will be looking to continue his rich vein of form after amassing seven fifty-plus scores on the trot in ODIs. He was declared player of the series for scores of 65, 72 and 62 in Pakistan’s 3-0 win against the West Indies at home in three-match ODI series in June 2022.

Pakistan will be without the services of world number three ODI bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is not available for the first two games due to knee injury.

The touring side had their first training session in Schiedam cricket ground, but due to rain they were compelled to conduct the second training session in indoors facilities in Rotterdam.

Reflecting on team’s preparation ahead of the series, Babar Azam said:

“It’s great to be here in Netherlands for the first time. The weather and the hospitality is very good here and we are being looked after really well.

“I do follow Netherlands cricket and I am impressed with their passion for the game. I am very hopeful that the series starting tomorrow will go a long way to promote the game in this region.

“We will not become complacent here and the players are ready to express themselves at the ground. In the absence of Shaheen Shah Afridi, this is an opportunity for youngsters to come forward and showcase their skills.

“We are looking forward to a good contest between bat and ball and I am hopeful the fans will turn up in numbers to witness the series.”

Imam sure is on quite a crazy run in ODI's. His last 7 scores: 62, 72, 65, 89*, 106, 103, 56. Batting at a 96 SR in these matches and a streak of 7 games of 50+ scores. Impressive stuff.

England nearly scored 500 vs the Dutch when they played them. Lets see if our batsmen play in same aggressive manner during series or whether it will be a selfish stats padding series.

We should go with 4 pacers + one spinner. Dahani and Naseem should both play. No point playing 2 spinners Salman will bowl, no need to worry about long tail. It's Netherlands, we gotta experiment.
I'd play Shafique too, in the Middle order.

Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Shafique
Salman
Rizwan
Shadab
Waseem
Haris

I think they don't want to play Abdullah In the middle order because of the comments about Shan batting in the middle order.

Pakistan's ODI squad visited Ajax FC headquarters

Ajax players and Pakistan team members met ahead of the 3rd ODI vs Netherlands and exchanged pleasantries as well. AFC Ajax are one of the top-tier football teams in Netherlands and while introducing Babar to them, Shadab said, "He is Cristiano Messi, he is both." What Shadab meant was that Babar had qualities of both Ronaldo and Messi in world cricket.

Netherlands allrounder Bas de Leede has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second ODI against Pakistan in Rotterdam.

de Leede was found to have breached Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the use of an audible obscenity during an international match.

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to de Leede’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred in the 17th over of the Netherlands’ innings. de Leede played the ball directly to a fielder and used inappropriate language which was heard through the stump microphone and on the live broadcast, necessitating an apology to the public by the commentators.

de Leede admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee, Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Michael Gough and Nitin Bathi, third umpire Rizwan Akram and fourth official Adriaan van den Dries levelled the charges.
Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

What did we gain from this tour? honest question. Did we find out something we didnt know? Any news stars?

In a cricketing sense I don't think we gained anything. The performance was not great, the cricket was quite dull. However it is good to see Netherlands getting some exposure and hopefully their cricket will improve as a result.

Also those world cup super league points. I think we are pretty much guaranteed an automatic world cup place now.
