He can't play as a pure batsman so needs to be dropped.

Would much rather have Kamran Ghulam over him.

A far superior batsman and can bowl just as well as Agha.
 
6-7 is a fine position for him to bat. But he needs to improve his off spin. He must be a AR rather than a pure batsman.

Specially with Azhar Ali retiring, Saud Shakeel emerging in the middle order. Agha Ali Salman could shift in to No.5.
 
Bit of a jittery starter but looks quite comfortable when he gets in, particularly against spin bowlers.
 
With him being used at 7 he needs to learn to bat with the tail better, you have to be able to take control of an inns and also maximize scoring opportunities which he doesnt seem to do.
 
Looks like a really decent player now. I wasn’t sure at first but sooner or later he’s got a big score coming and he’s gonna do really well. The trouble is that pak tail is awful and from no 6/7 he will have to excel and accelerate with the tail which isn’t easy. Nevertheless a real gem of a player once he’s in.
 
Fake batsmen and fake all rounder. Poor man's hafeez / malik. Such garbage player shouldn't be picked again.

He can't even bat well with the tail so what is the point him having at 7. He doesn't have any strokes, looks out of depth

I think there is a player in there somewhere, but I dont know what his role in the team is at the moment and accordingly he looks a bit lost.

His dismissal today surmised this because he was suddenly left poking around with the tail, then he felt pressure to push the target up and probably the first attacking shot of his innings was a tame chip to a fielder from the wrong ball.

He needs to be given a clear set of responsibilities, for example: as a frequent spin bowler who has the licence to pinch-hit from no.8, or as an occasional bowler who is trusted to bat in the middle order and build an innings from no.6.

Or, something else. Just give him a role !
 
Anyone can average 35 with the bat at No 6 or 7. It isn't earth shattering. And anyone can bowl part time off spin too if that is what is Salman's role.

The issue is that a 35 avg batsman is never going to bail out your batting or give you that extra edge. And neither will a part time bowler give you wickets. So you're losing both ways.

Thr PCB is either stupid or incredibly biased that they're having to manufacture bits and pieces positions and shove Salman, Nawaz, Faheem et al in the team.

Get a 45 avg batter at 6 and boost your team with 4 'proper' bowlers and then see the results. This is how Misbah got his successes.

Perfect role for him is to go back to domestic cricket and learn to bat and never be picked for Pakistan again.
 
They should have picked Mubasir.Agha is a terrible batter and his bowling is that off a club cricketer.

I can give you a proper analysis on why Salman Zahid Nauman and others won’t succeed in international cricket.

I can do the same for Salahuddin and a few other 40 strike rate batsmen being touted as to why they will add zero impetus to the test batting line up which already has plenty of slow grinders.

This guy should never have been picked. It’s unfathomable how he was given a test cap. Either sifarish of the highest order or Mr laptop ran the wrong formula in excel when he was doing the analytics.

Team management keep using him at 7 so the clearly dont think hes good enough to be batting in top 6. Kamran ghulam or usman Salluddin would be better.
 
Hiding him wont help him and you can imagine that he will claim that he never batted in his ideal place and he will be justified in his claim. Give him responsibility or ship him out

clearly no faith at all, Moyo was one who requested him to play and sqai thinks he did well vs England, deluded team management.
 
We don't like him but once again it is he who is holding the fort in the end.
 
Credit to him for scoring runs again. He looks decent but the a role at no.7 is that of an alrounder. If he cant bowl effectively then we need to find someone else.

Ideally yes. But that is when the management knows what it wants in terms of team balance. This one seems clueless based on the evidence of the last series. They just seem to play people without giving thought to the specific role they will play.

Salman has been more than decent in the opportunities he has had. He is gritty and has a good enough technique. Not his mistake that the captain hasn't bowled him as much as he should have. At the moment he should be judged as a pure batter and not an allrounder and in that role he hasn't done badly and deserves more chances.

I guess if he is good enough to play as a genuine batter then we should drop Shan and play an alrounder.

The current Pakistan XI is one bowler short and will not win many games with this strategy.

350 all out for Pakistan would have been an even contest, but he’s taking the game away from New Zealand here.

Lovely strokeplay and intelligent rotation of strike.

Hope he gets a hundred.

Based on the evidence so far he seems to be. We need a gritty number 6 and he fits the bill. Shan definitely needs to go. On these pitches, with two spinners, and Babar's brand of captaincy don't think we are a bowler short. The spinners will bowl 70-80% of the overs in any case so the fifth bowler will likely be underutilized(we saw what happened with Faheem in the last series). And if we must play one then it has to be a specialist, no point playing bits and pieces players like Nawaz or Fahim. And before you point it out, yes it will affect the balance with the tail starting at 7 but I don't see any solution to that unless we find a proper allrounder. So in my opinion on these pitches this is a better option and does give us more balance. The fault actually lies with the captain who doesn't want to use Salman or Saud.

Credit where it's due - scored 103 out of the 132 runs that were added while he was at the crease today against New Zealand.

Very impressive innings.

First 6 Tests all in Asia - that is always a nice start.

As I mentioned earlier I see shades of VVS in Salman.He should give priority to batting and sure he can bat well with tail with great temperament like VVS.His bowling is just bonus.
 
As usual, egg on a lot of faces. He got a lot unnecessary hate as I said. If a guy scores 50s batting at number 7, you don't slay him. I was impressed by him in the England series. Even more impressed now.
 
Unfairly and unreasonably criticized right since he was named in the test squad earlier this year but he continues to defy his critics.

He needs to bat in the top 6 though
 
Can not criticise a player scoring runs, but do keep in mind the type of pitch it was scored on.
 
Unnecessarily being labeled as allrounder to push him to # 7 slot in batting order , which is unfair with him. He is a proper batter who can bowl a few over when needed . Its hard to score long inning at # 7. He should bat ahead of the keeper , Sarfraz or Rizwan .

My impressions of Agha Salman were actually quite different to a lot of posters here initially. I thought he has batted quite well since his debut and had showed some grit and courage. But I kept quiet because it seemed like most people thought he was useless and perhaps I was wrong and missing something.

But today imo he showed he's got the courage and the smarts and he was not just a random pick. Babar has backed this guy for a reason and it paid off today.

He has done better than a lot of people expected and has justified his place thus far. Whether that can translate to performing overseas, I don't know. But from my brief watching of him and the way he plays, I can tell you guys I'd rather have him in the team over a player like Abdullah Shafique, who to me, so far plays with zero authority.

edit: I might add that I had also checked his domestic stats to see if he deserved to be picked. And guess what - his domestic stats for last few seasons were very very good.

He will be decent for Pakistan in ODI too
 
He will never have many fans because he doesn’t have the talent tag & he also doesn’t fulfill the English quota like Shan.

He will inevitably have a short, lonely career because he will never be far away from getting dropped because he has no support system.

He should enjoy while it lasts. Brilliant hundred. Happy for him.

He looks like a batsman and tbh I had very little hope for him because before the SL tour he was playing Bham Parks league on a Sunday and that doesn't you give any confidence that he would succeed. I have no idea whether he will succeed in the medium term but if MY likes him, he must have something. Let's hope he takes responsibility and the management agree with him and moves up the order.
 
Agha Salman should bowl more and should show something with the ball to add more utility to the team.
 
He should bat at no 6...seriously the likes of Rizwan and Sarfaraz coming ahead of him? Why?
I've been saying this for some time he is a good enough batter, may be not as celebrated as the other dimwits, but he deserves more respect.
 
i wasnt his biggest supporter but hes not gonna get dropped anytime soon now. credit to him, he's taken his opportunities.

i actually dont mind him batting at seven, batting with the tail allows him the license to be a bit more aggressive and helps pad the weak batting line up.
 
Racked up a string of high scores batting with the tail. Impressive stuff.
 
A good batsman and confident one . Will play more clutch innings in future. He should be regular in tests and odis, can be tried in t20s too, will surely play better than the likes of khushdil and asif
 
Needs to be persisted with after his 100 in the 1st Test.

Great day's bowling from him to get Pakistan back into this game. Totally outbowled Abrar.
 
Seeing what he's done today makes it strange that he'd only bowled 14 overs across the previous 4 Tests. Seems this performance has come as a surprise to Babar too.
 
Most of the time he looks innocuous against the right handers but doesn't look too bad against the lefties
 
Bowled beautifully but it's a fluke. He won't replicate this performance all year. I hope I'm wrong but can't see it again
 
If he can bowl with control means going under 4 rpo and get around1 or 2 wickets per inning, and with his batting ability he can be permanent fixture in our test team as all rounder, but not as pure batsman unless he turn into Smith 2.0

They are not deluded he’s a fantastic player. There are obviously always areas where these players can improve but he seems to have the temperament to hold an end and craft out an innings. He’s a gritty player who absorbs pressure well. Time and again batting as low as he does he will have to farm the strike and he’ll occasionally get it wrong because we have the worst and longest tail. Nevertheless I like that he’s inventive and can score fast and change gears when needed. Obviously the real test will be when there’s footage of him so opposition will exploit weaknesses especially on seaming and tracks but still there’s a lot to like.
 
I take back everything I said about him. Shouldn't be fooled by that ugly technique. He is playing a clutch knock and if he sees Pakistan home, it will end up being a highly memorable and important innings.
 
Not the most "naturally talented" as some would put it but somehow always seems to do his job wether with the bat or with the ball
