What's new

[VIDEOS/PICTURES] Salman Ali Agha - Will he succeed at the international level?

Very very poor game awareness, what is the hype about experience in Ist class cricket if you can’t play the situation. He was beaten thrice. It’s criminal if you can’t close the game.Pakistan must try to play 5 genuine bowlers , take wickets and let not opposition score as many runs.

I take back everything I said about him. Shouldn't be fooled by that ugly technique. He is playing a clutch knock and if he sees Pakistan home, it will end up being a highly memorable and important innings.

Am not sure what he was thinking he wasn't even disappointed when he got out.

The shot he got out to was very poor he wasn't slightly disappointed and that's why Sarfraz was frustrated with Agha.

He did well positive mindset yes shot selection was poor but if he was there till end we would have won.

Sarfraz led the counterattack

But it was that clown saud who did his best to heap the pressure he just didn't get going .
Even in first innings he got his century and then went in total limp mode.

We could have won this game .

I'll give saud the benefit of the doubt this time because he is new but he needs to really improve his strike rate and start playing to the situation.
you cannot play with a 20 strike rate as a batsmen even last remaining wicket naseem shah a tailender was positive and hitting the spinner.

Outside Asia, he may not succeed because he is not good against pace bowling. But within Asia, he should be an automatic pick at number 7. Plays spin very well and can attack. A little improvement in his off-spin and he could be a very good player in the subcontinent.

Awful technique. Easiest pitches. 33 average.

No a wearing 5th day pitch with world class spinners bowling into the rough with the weight of runs behind them is not easy. If he was an opener batting on a first day subcontinental pitch you could say that but on a fifth day he has to adjust to the tempo and be inventive and gritty. He always finds unfortunate ways to get out but he’s a perfect lower order batsman and Pakistan have filled an almighty gap with him. The other gap to fill is a seaming all rounder (I don’t mean hasan or faheem)

A lot of people throw around casual player categories such ‘Asian conditions player’ and ‘outside Asia player’

Like, how do you work out who is capable of playing in which part of the world? Who exactly is our specialist ‘non Asian conditions’ players? Do they play their domestic FC cricket outside of Pakistan and not play in Pakistan’s domestic circuit?

Who would replace Agha outside of Asia if he isn’t suited to those conditions? Who is the player that is?

The obvious non-performer outside Asia is Babar. But no one mentions it.

There are some sure biases.

It's easy. Shoaib Malik cannot play pace if his life depended on it. That's a fact. But he's a monster when it comes to hitting spin. Obviously he's much more suited to Asian conditions. Is it really unbelievable that Shoaib Malik's two consequential innings have both come in Asian conditions (one in Abu Dhabi and the other I think in Kandy) and has been hopeless abroad. In England he has an average of 15 and in NZ an average of 12. Averages 41 in Asia.

Similarly Agha Salman is a terrific player of spin and does really well at number 7. But he looks really bad against pace. He may not succeed in English and NZ conditions where pace bowlers bowl 75 overs in a day on relatively seaming wickets. It's a no brainer that he will likely not succeed.

On the other hand, Saud Shakeel looks adept at playing both pace and spin. So he has a better chance of surviving abroad.

I am none the wiser about him. I don't know if he can play or not. Statistically he has done well but it remains to be seen where he goes from here. He needs to bat up the order and soon we will see whether he is the wheat or the chaff

Ok, but besides Saud…who is our best players for non Asian conditions?

I think he did reasonably well given the circumstances and the way he mas moved up and down the order.

He looks like a handy player and Im keen to see how he performs in ODIs.

Bowled well in first innings , batted well given the situation in second innings. He is not a big shot player and the shot he played yesterday to get out was horrendous and not needed. But the innings as a whole was good and gave pakistan hope to win the match. After he left even sarfraz just wanted to play for time and in the process got out.

If he is not a big shot player, do you think it was a bad decision to keep him in ODI setup over Iftikhar. Considering he will bat at no. 6.

Iftikhars time i think is over , his ineffectiveness against adil rashid sealed his fate that day.

I believe agha won't be a good lower order batsman in odis , i have not seen him hit big with success regularly in shorter formats. He looked out of his depth. Both tayyab tahir and kamran g are better at hitting.

Well as long as we pick bits & pieces players like Agha Salman, we will never be a champion team.

Brilliant catch by Salman

He has the absolute ugliest technique and looks like a part-timer while bowling. But objectively speaking, he has done fairly well and made the most of the chances he has been given.

Should not be in the xi but now he is should be given a reasonable amount of chances.

Pakistan looking to Salman to work with Babar now...

Never a run there.

Threw his wicket away.

The ball was straight to the fielder. Crazy running.

Very poor running today:

Brilliant stuff from Salman Ali Agha - 45 off 43

45 off 43 - good knock although I feel he could have worked some of those dot balls around for singles.

You Pakistani fans are brainless we in a country where no Batsman barely touches the average of 50 in domestic cricket this guy has come and it’s doing amazing playing lockie with ease which is not easy by any means his spin game and where the gaps are is amazing to watch. Our fans judge our players like there are kallis and klusener not getting a chance cause of him. We are very average batting nation he is above our pay grade

Very useful player Salman

Continues to impress Salman - second wicket

Fantastic bowling spell today:

10-42-2

Hardly any poor deliveries.

This guy has truly surprised everyone. A good find. Hope he keeps up with the hard work.

For someone who's considered a part time bowler, he bowled well.

I do think there are areas in his batting needing improvements such as strike rotation. But he played well today.

He’s a lock for the WC for me. A clever player of spin and you need that in India. Also a better bowler than KG who he’s probably competing for a spot with.

He is an enterprising player. Doesn’t have the talent & golden boy label so he won’t have a lot of rabid fans, but he is pretty good.

I would say he is a better all-round cricketer than self-appointed superstar Shadab. Certainly has better fitness levels,

Absolutely love how he keeps proving ppl wrong. He already has an important role in the one day team just a few games in.

He is like a Hafeez. A quiet performer that contributes with bat and ball. He play spin and has some attacking prowess. He will improve the more he matures.

Good fielder for sure - excellent throw to get Will Young out.

Batting am not so sure.

Doing a great job with the ball Salman - has been difficult to score against and also has a wicket too.

Pretty strange that fans here are calling for his head when he’s actually been good so far. I feel he has decent ability with both bat and ball and a good head on his shoulders

It's like Mamoon said, he has never had that 'golden boy' label so no backing from fans. He'll always have to prove himself.

Look, not everything is about power hitting when you bat low down the order. As long as Salman bats at a good SR, he is worth his weight in gold at his position.

Has shown good Match awareness and ability to find gaps well.

He is a good batsman who can provide a few overs of spin. He is needed in the lineup.

Never liked him as a player but full-credit to him. He has made the most of his opportunities and established his place in the side on the back of consistent performances.

Brilliant innings by Salman Ali Agha

Decent command of English too in the post match! Good to see!!

Salman plays a fantastic innings and some people here are fawning over him speaking English. :))

This is how Shan English Masood got his marketing from as well. It’s a slippery slope.

But Agha has done more in this game than Shan has done in his entire ODI career.

He keeps on playing like this and it will take a brave man to drop him.

Talk about taking your chance. He is very good with strike rotation and then brilliantly attacks spin to score his runs at a decent clip.

Another excellent 50 today.

Comfortably better than fake athlete.

Salman Ali Agha showing why he topped the charts last few domestic seasons where he had to face the best of Pak's bowling (regional set up with five teams).

He is a good player, but because he isn't flashy and because he doesn't have the delusions of a superstar, he won't get the respect that he deserves.

Looks handy with the bat

Questions are if he can do it against better sides on more tricky pitches. Also whether he can go up a gear once the situation requires it.

Decent technique though

Looks like another Shoaib Malik, not sure if that is a compliment or an insult tbh, but going with that: Stuggles against pace, plays spin well and is a handy off spinner (better than Malik in this regard).

Handy player to have in the subcontinent World cup this year, should be on the plane for it.
