Oval Invincibles fast bowler Spencer Johnson produced the most economical 20-ball effort in The Hundred on Wednesday, claiming three wickets for just one run in his stunning debut in the tournament.

Two days after being picked in the Australia squad for the T20 International series in South Africa later this month, the 27-year-old justified his selection firing 19 dot balls from a maximum of 20 deliveries as his team trumped Manchester Originals by 94 runs.

After the Invincibles racked up 186-5, Johnson did not concede any run in his first five balls, and gave away only a single to England white-ball captain Jos Buttler in his second set of five.

The left-arm quick returned to bowl 10 straight deliveries during which he mowed down the Manchester lower order, taking three wickets including two bowled.

“I’m speechless, not really sure what’s going on,” Johnson, who played the final of the Global T20 Canada on Sunday, said afterwards.

“I’m pinching myself…I’ve had a bit of a tough run with injury but I’m 27 now and come out the other side. I’m just really enjoying my cricket and lucky to be here.”

Oval captain Sam Billings admired Johnson’s ability to swing the bowl at high pace.

“To provide a performance like that against Jos Buttler and Phil Salt as well, two of the best players in the world at the moment, I can’t really put into words how special that bowling performance is,” Billings said.

Looks good, saw him in BBL as well and was impressive.

One thing to note is that he seems like a late boomer. He is 27 years old and has just played 4 FC matches, 6 list A matches and 11 T20 matches. Really surprising that he came into the radar at this level so late when he was part of South Australia U19 as well and it wasnt like South Australia was spoilt with express pace options in last 5-6 years. They just game him very few list A matches in 2017 despite him looking like a natural potential with his height, left arm angle and pace (Combination of all three attributes is not common).

Whatever is the reason for his delayed development, all this would mean that despite his potential he will have to put in extra yards to take his career to the next level.

FC record in limited matches is solid but, for late boomers at this level there is a general tendency that they become white ball specialist as it allows them to maximize their financial side of the things. Lets see how he develops, how his fitness is and everything. Starc is an all format pacer for so long, for which skills are just one aspect and fitness is extremely important aspect as well to get that longevity.

First time I've seen him.

Rapid, over 90mph.

Looks a great prospect.

Justin Langer suffers ugly start as Spencer Johnson lights up cricket world in IPL

Justin Langer's first major coaching role since leaving the Australian national team did not get off to the best of starts, while emerging superstar Spencer Johnson has only further pressed his T20 World Cup claims. Langer returned to the cricket coaching scene having taken over the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League.

Langer has a number of superstars in the team, including Aussie Marcus Stoinis, South African Quinton de Kock and a very strong Indian contingent including KL Rahul. However, his first game did not go to plan after the talented outfit lost by 20 runs to the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur after a lacklustre run chase.

The Royals posted a formidable 4-193 after captain Sanju Samson was able to bat throughout all 20 overs to steady the innings. He finished on 82 not out. But Langer's side struggled in the run chase with no batter ever firing. De Kock and Devdutt Padikkal were dismissed cheaply with New Zealand quick Trent Boult doing the damage as the away side slumped to 3-11 in 3.1 overs. Stoinis was dismissed cheaply as well.

West Indian Nicholas Pooran's 64 not out and skipper KL Rahul's 58 off 44 balls proving not enough as they finished on 6-173. Langer joked before the season: "I will have sleepless nights in fitting so much talent in just 11 slots." Although those sleepless nights might come sooner with the Giants starting with a grim loss. While Langer may have been disappointed with his introduction to the lucrative tournament, Johnson enjoyed a brilliant start.

Spencer Johnson shines in Indian Premier League debut

Gujarat left the cricket world stunned last year when they signed Johnson for $1.78 million following the tall quick's debut season in the Big Bash League. And the 28-year-old repaid his fortune having delivered in the second last over to help Gujarat defeat the Mumbai Indians in a close clash.

The Mumbai Indians were trying to chase down Gujarat's 6-186. Johnson came on in the 10th over and endured a nightmare first six balls. Dewald Brevis (46) and before India captain Rohit Sharma (43) blasted him to the boundary as he went for 17.

The game went down to the wire as Mumbai needed 27 off the last two overs with five wickets in hand. And young captain Shubman Gill risked backed Spencer with the second last over.

Johnson looked in for a long night when Tilak Varma smashed him for six. However, the Aussie stormed back. Johnson dismissed Varma - who was caught in the deep - before following it up with a caught-and-bowled off a mistimed pull by Gerald Coetzee.

The over went for just eight runs, which allowed Gujarat to secure the match in the next over. "To have the backing from him and everyone else, even after going for runs in my first over, it's pretty cool," Johnson said in his post-match intervew. "This is easily the biggest crowd I've played in front of, I've always wanted to play cricket in india - and here I am. I hope we can keep winning."

Johnson also praised Gill, who is the captain at just 24, for backing him before his debut. "Shubman is unbelievable. He sat next to me on the bus trip, he was calming me. We talked through the game. As a young captain, he's unbelievable," Johnson added.

Australian bowler Spencer Johnson ruled out of United Kingdom tour due to injury

Australian bowler Spencer Johnson has been ruled out of next month’s white-ball tour of the United Kingdom after sustaining a side strain while representing The Oval Invincibles in The Hundred.

The 28-year-old, who has played five T20Is since his international debut last year, is expected to miss the remainder of The Hundred after managing just five deliveries during last week’s victory over the London Spirit at The Oval.

“(Johnson) will return home for further assessment rehabilitation before the Australian summer,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

The left-armed quick, who helped the Brisbane Heat win its second Big Bash League earlier this year, took two wickets at 64.00 in six matches for the Invincibles.

New South Wales all-rounder Sean Abbott, who had already been named Australia’s ODI squad for the tour of Scotland and England, will replace Johnson in the T20 touring party.

Johnson, who has an unfortunate history with injury, claimed 19 wickets at 14.47 during last summer’s BBL campaign, taking 4-26 during January’s triumphant final against the Sydney Sixers at the SCG.

After turning heads in the Big Bash and The Hundred, the South Australian was snapped up by the Gujarat Titans for $1.78 million at last year’s Indian Premier League Auction.

Last month, CA announced that bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, along with all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, had been rested for the T20 leg of the United Kingdom tour, which gets underway on September 4.
