Full Name: Faisal Akram

Date of Birth: 20 Aug 2003, Multan

Major teams: Pakistan Under-16s, Southern Punjab Under-19s, Multan Under-16s, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Under-16s

Batting style: Left-handed

Bowling style: Slow left-arm orthodox (Chinaman)

Interest in Cricket

I grew up in a household where cricket was not looked at as a profession which could earn you money so obviously there was some resistance to the idea of me taking up the game as a profession. However, with the efforts and support of my elder brother Bilal Akram who used to play at a local club, my family relented and allowed me to take up the game seriously. It was also whilst watching my brother play that my interest in the game was ignited. Of course, like most youngsters in Pakistan, I started off bowling with a tape-ball with a style of spin that came to me naturally, which at that time I did not realize was that of a Chinaman bowler. Whilst cricket is an important part of my life, I have continued to study and have cleared Matriculation level, and now am looking to complete the first year of Intermediate.

Starting hard-ball cricket in 2017, and being selected for Multan Under-16s in 2018

I was introduced to hard-ball cricket by my elder brother and he helped me start my hard-ball journey with the Zawari Cricket Club in Multan in 2017. I managed to impress the selectors at the club with my Chinaman deliveries and was an instant success at the club. After playing club cricket that year, I appeared at the regional Under-16s trials and was selected to represent Multan in the PCB-PEPSI Stars Under-16 One Day Tournament 2018/19. I then participated in the PCB Under-16s Pentangular One-Day Tournament 2018-19 but this time for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Under-16s where I topped the charts with 10 wickets in 5 games.

Touring with Pakistan Under-16s for matches against Australia and Bangladesh Under-16s in 2018/19

Based on my performances for regional Under-16 sides, I was invited to a camp at the National Cricket Academy and then selected for the series against Australia which was played in UAE. In 5 One-Day games against a fairly strong side, I was the second highest wicket-taker and the best spinner for Pakistan with 10 wickets. The next tour of Bangladesh for the Under-16s did not turn out to be that great in terms of performances but I am glad I was included in it as such tours really help in the development of a young bowler like myself.

Impressing all at the National Under-19 One-Day tournament in 2020/21

I had a great start to the Under-19 phase of my career when I was picked to represent Southern Punjab for the 2020/21 season. When the season ended, I was the highest wicket-taker with 27 wickets in 10 matches, at an average of 14.33. My performances in the National Under-19 Three-Day Tournament 2020/21 were not that great but once again the value of experience is something which is very important, and I feel that I learnt a lot from playing in the 3-day format.

Tremendous opportunity to learn from Mushtaq Ahmed at the Under-19 camp for postponed tour of Bangladesh

Whilst we were all disappointed with the postponement of the tour, what I am really happy about is the fact that I got the chance to practice with some top-quality players and above all, got the opportunity to train under the guidance of my role-model and favourite bowler, Mushtaq Ahmed. His advice during the camp was very useful and I will try to put that into action when I play next.

Desire to bowl to one of the best batsmen in the world, Virat Kohli, is my lifelong wish

One only gets better and also learns about one’s true skills when they come up against the very best in the game. In that sense, it is my lifelong wish to have the opportunity to bowl to Virat Kohli. Every cricketer has some goal and taking Virat Kohli’s wicket is mine, God Willing.

Taking the prize-wicket of the world’s top ODI batsman, Babar Azam

Based upon my previous performances at the Under-16 and Under-19 levels, I had recently been invited to practice with the Pakistan senior team ahead of the tour of South Africa and as one can imagine, I was very nervous but Waqar Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq really gave me a lot of confidence. With this sort of support and confidence, I was able to bowl at my best and it was a great feeling when I trapped Babar Azam lbw. What also filled me with great joy was that after I had got Babar out he came to me and appreciated my bowling by saying “well bowled” to me.

Mushtaq Ahmed and Brad Hogg as role models

The bowlers who I have always admired from my childhood is the Pakistan legend Mushtaq Ahmed. I always watch videos of Mushtaq Ahmed bowling to learn more from his skills and I hope one day I can perform in the same way he did for Pakistan. Amongst Chinaman bowlers, I am a great fan of Brad Hogg and he is one that I do copy when I am bowling. I have seen his videos on Social Media and that has helped me become a better bowler as well.

To play in the PSL and for Pakistan in Tests would be a dream come true

I have done well in One-Day games during my career so far, but my ultimate aim is to play for Pakistan in Tests. I understand that to achieve that I will have to work very hard but I am all set for it and will do what is needed to achieve my dream. Of course, like many other Pakistani players, I am also interested in making a name for myself in the PSL, whenever that opportunity is offered to me.

Interesting to see Brad Hogg as one of his role models. Extremely underrated cricketer

If he is developed correctly, he could be an asset for us in the future.

Good luck to him. I hope he can develop well and represent Pakistan in the future, having a left-arm wrist spinner would be very useful to the teams combination.

Pretty decent action and generates some good revolutions on the ball. He has had a decent start to his career as a cricketer with performances at junior level and leaving impression on Pak national team during camps and warm up matches.

Along with the main skillset it would be really good if young cricketers can be given more awareness regarding fitness and possibly given customized fitness plans from the very young age based upon their cricketing roles. Quite a few guys were lost to fitness issues in the last decade and they couldn’t achieve their full potential so definitely need to minimize that and make players more ready from the junior level itself.

Clips look ok and his action looks pretty smooth.

I just hope they give him enough time to develop and mature as a cricketer.

The Lad has a nice action but the turns comes from the slow pace and but the crunch will come when he bowls a bit quicker and loses some of the turn. As Yadav has discussed recently, he finds it difficult to know what pace to bowl and he was tipped by many including me to be a super star and he may still become one but atm he has lost his confidence.

The other problem with left arm chinaman bowlers is that they bowl into the natural hitting arc of the right handed batsman. If he makes it onto FC consistently then it will be a hell of an achievement. Best of luck to the lad.

Faisal Akram should be in Pakistan's next squad

I think he should be in Pakistan's next squad and possibly for T20 World Cup too. I know that he does not have much experience, that is the speciality of mystery spinners, you don't really have to overexpose them as other teams might be able to handle them. Most of the teams don't even have a chinaman and all those teams struggled against Kuldeep Yadav and Brad Hogg in the past.

It seems as though you haven't learned from what we did to Naseem Shah, Muhammad Musa, Hasnain, and all those promising players we destroyed by exposing them early on.

Exactly. We need to stop jumping between the 2 extremes of selecting inexperience teenagers, and also 35+ year olds to make their debut. There is a happy medium in there that we should be focusing on.

Nice going for Faisal in the National Under-19 Championship

Promising left-arm-wrist spinner Faisal Akram took eight wickets in the day (four in each innings) as Southern Punjab Whites U19 gained control of their National U19 Championship (three-day) fixture against Sindh U19 Whites on day-two of the second-round fixture.

Obvious choice for the U19 World Cup and well deserved as well.

Teenage left-arm wrist spinner Faisal Akram’s beguiling variations have been a salient feature of his short professional career ever since he burst onto the Pakistan cricket scene. Belonging to Multan, the city of saints, Faisal’s obvious potential has allowed him to find success at the domestic level but his journey in the initial years was hampered by a lack of financial support from his family.

Faced with challenges in his path to pursue his passion, Faisal has been greatly assisted by the PCB Pathway Cricket Programme. The 18-year-old is one of the 100 cricketers given contracts under the PCB Junior Development Programme, which serves to hone the skills of youngsters and groom future stars of the game.

Faisal made an early mark on the cricketing horizon when he finished the PCB U16 Pentangular Tournament 2018-19 as the leading wicket-taker. He later graduated to the U19 level with the same success, managing nine wickets in four games for Southern Punjab Whites at the National U19 Cup 2021-22. He later bagged 26 wickets from five outings in the National U19 Championship 2021-22.

In conversation with PCB Digital, Faisal said: “The Pathway Cricket Programme is a great initiative as it provides financial support to families from humble background. I was personally really happy to be named alongside the 100 cricketers given contracts and my family was equally delighted.

“When I started playing cricket, my parents couldn’t afford to back me because of the monetary constraints. The introduction of this programme has paved the way for me to continue my journey and follow my dream of representing the country and play for a long time.”

The spinner recently took part in the first phase of the National High Performance Centre conditioning camp in Lahore, where he commented how it was a great learning experience for him to be bowling to some of the high-profile players.

“It is a huge privilege for me that at this age, I am playing alongside great players of the country. It will help me adapt to the pressure you face in a competitive match. Bowling to batters like Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq is a great challenge and I enjoy it as it forces you to devise new strategies.”

It is not surprising that Faisal took up wrist spin in a bid to emulate his hero Mushtaq Ahmed. Currently serving as spin bowling consultant, Mushtaq expressed his excitement at what Faisal has to offer and lauded his talent.

Left-arm wrist spinners are considered to be a rare breed because of their unorthodox skill and if shown the right direction, Faisal can prove to be a match winner for Pakistan, Mushtaq reckons.

“Faisal is a mystery spinner I have worked with him in the camp previously and he has all the tricks in his bag. We are currently working on his mental toughness and on his body. His body needs to be strong and he will surely improve.

“The thing that inspires me as a coach is talent and Faisal is a very promising cricketer. I enjoy it when he deceives batters in the nets and he is a keen learner of the game.”

Thats because of parchi ijaz ahmed...hr was the leading wicket taker in one of tje formats but ijaz didnt play him one match even the last meaningless game he could have played him

That's just one of his many blunders he made.

Could Faisal Akram be the mystery spinner Pakistan needs desperately?

He needs to play full season of domestic and no 2020 toutnaments and inshalla he be ready

No. If he has a successful career at the FC that will be an amazing achievement.

Faisal Akram registered his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket today in the sixth round of the ongoing President's Trophy 2023-2024 for PTV against KRL. His bowling figure was (5/95).

I think he is currently the only chinaman bowler in the domestic circuit right now so why don't we give more exposure to this lad specially since we are already short of good spinners in the team?

Faisal Akram from PTV was the game changer in their triumph over KRL during the sixth round of the President's Trophy 2023-24.

His stellar performance of 9/182, breaking down to 5/95 in the first innings and 4/87 in the second innings, sealed the deal for PTV.

To be honest he hasnt been given any chances what so ever.. i actually thin there is potential here. Ijaz Ahmed destroyed him in under 19 days and after that he hasnt been seen since even Sufiyan Muqeem has gone ahead of him.

In a stellar display of bowling prowess, PTV's Faisal Akram delivered yet another remarkable performance by claiming 7 wickets for just 47 runs against WAPDA during the seventh round of the President's Trophy 2023-24. Following his phenomenal 9-wicket haul in the previous match, Akram played a pivotal role in dismissing WAPDA for a mere 124 runs on Day 1.

Highlights of his brilliant spell

Faisal Akram notched up his maiden 10-wicket match haul in First-Class cricket. His exceptional bowling, including a brilliant 7/47 in first innings and 3/92 in second innings , came against WAPDA in the seventh round of the President's Trophy 2023-24. Despite his outstanding efforts, PTV couldn't clinch the victory, and WAPDA emerged triumphant by 3 wickets.

As we are wasting time on Shadab Khan and Usama Mir, why are selectors reluctant to invest in Faisal Akram?

Going over 6 in FC and when the standard is this bad. Not good signs.
Well on these pathetic pitches we can never judge his abilities. Surely he is looking like a good prospect who might perform better if given a chance in international cricket.

If he going over 6 against these clubs levels batsmens at FC on spinning tracks, he's got no hope at international. I have seen him enough to know he won't make it.

I agree. One Is playing First Class cricket and trying to improve himself whildt the other two seem content playing leagues around the world.

He should play more and more to improve his skills. He is a good bowler and one of the few left-arm chinamen in the country, so he can definitely do well in the future but he needs to learn that you have to work hard everyday and try again and again,

Faisal Akram would finally be in action in PSL 9 today. Also this is the lad's first ever PSL match, can he do something special against Lahore Qalandars today? 🤔

First wicket for Faisal Akram in PSL 9. Kamran Ghulam is his first victim and Sikandar Raza the second one. His figures so far 2/20 in 3 overs.

Poor guy has had like 3 faily easy catches dropped from his bowling

I was calling for his selection from the first game of this PSL.

Glad he's finally played today and got 2-26 in his 4 overs in his first PSL game.

Good to see his name for the pre-season fitness and fielding camp to be held in the next month. Pakistan really needs a good spinner and this guy should be among those who should be groomed.

Faisal Akram remains the the most expensive bowler for Pakistan Shaheens in the 2 Four-Day Match series against Bangladesh A in Darwin

Matches: 1

Wickets: 3

BBI: 2/87

Overs: 35

Bowling Economy: 3.94

Bowling Average: 46.00

Truly appreciate the team at Pakpassion trying to unearth good players from within Pakistan's domestic circuit...

Cricketing talent, it seems, has dried up in Pakistan...

The next 10 years look really painful if you are a PCT supporter...

Guys like faisal need to be groomed properly. No everyday you will see a left arm chinamen and most of the bowlers in internationals have been quite successful so there is always a chance that faisal can be one of those bowlers for Pakistan.

All chinaman / wrist spinners are expensive are they not. Remember when Kuldip started his career but they stuck with him and i have always been a fan of Faisal he has been treated very harshly he is much attacking option then any spinner including your naumans or even mehran who apparently is the next big thing.

He has been part of the setup for more than 6 years now and just look at the amount of FC games he has played in those years, in this era of pak cricket where we have severe lack of talent , the talented ones are still finding it nightmarish to get in to any FC team.

Faisal Akram's impressive bowling spell of 2/25 helped restrict Melbourne Renegades to 107, playing a key role in Shaheens' successful chase in the Top End Series match. How would you rate his today's bowling performance?

What a day this guy is having against Bangladesh A in the Top-End series game in Darwin.

Took 3 wickets so far and gave away just 8 runs in his 3 overs. Brilliant bowling from his young chinamen.

Needs to bowl 100s of overs in FC to kick on.I am not convinced by left arm leg spinners because historically the angle is against them but Yadav has shown they can be effective. Bowl him for 2 years in FC cricket and lets see what happens

4 overs, 10 runs and 3 wickets for Faisal Akram. Brilliant spell of bowling from this young man.

Faisal Akram is the second top wicket-taker for Pakistan Shaheens in the Top-End T20 series in Darwin.

Matches: 4
Wickets: 8
Economy: 7.19
Average: 14.38
BBF: 3/10

For which format do you think he is ready to represent Pakistan?

Suddenly we have very potent spinners coming through in the form of Faisal , Arif ,Mubasir , Mehran, Abrar and Arafat. Couple of them must be tried soon.

Faisal Akram strikes

He dismissed a settled Shan Masood, who was looking dangerous after scoring 41 runs from 53 balls against Lions in the Champions One-Day Cup 2024. Akram's clever bowling ended Masood's innings, catching him out with a scoop shot attempt. A crucial wicket taken, showing Akram's skill and ability to break partnerships.

Both Faisal and Sufyan doesn't spin it much unless spin friendly conditions , both are strictly mediocre and won't trouble international batsmen.

Wrist spinners take time to mature. Kuldeep is an example.
But I am afraid Faisal will be lost in our system after just a few bad performances.

Maiden List A five-wicket haul for Faisal Akram

A terrific spell (5/24) by the left-arm wrist spinner helps PTV bowl Ghani Glass out for just 166 in President's One-Day Cup 2024

Faisal Akram is the Best bowler of the tournament with 13 wickets total in the recently concluded President One day cup.

Should Pakistan bring him in???

With a serious lack of spinners coming through Pakistan, their is a serious amount of pressure on Faisal Akram to work out despite his young age.

Faisal Akram has been named in the ODI squad for the upcoming Australia and Zimbabwe tours. How good was this decision.??
