[VIDEOS/PICTURES] Winnipeg Hawks win Global T20 Canada 2019

Toronto has these grounds:

1) Flemingdon Park (worst ground possibly).
2) Eglinton Flats - East.
3) Eglinton Flats - West.
4) Sunnybrook Park - North.
5) Sunnybrook Park - East.
6) Sunnybrook Park - West.
7) King City (proper international ground).
8) Norfinch (garbage ground).

Sunnybrook and King City are the only proper ones. Rest are junk grounds.

I am following on Cricinfo. Not watching.

OMG EGLINTON FLATS? LMAOOO. Mississauga has the best grounds. Mavis and Danville Park are nice. Toronto grounds are trash. King City is trash, 5 minutes of drizzle and the next day is a washout. Beside Kingcity is 40km away from Toronto.

You are correct. Mississauga and Brampton have better grounds. Even Waterloo and Markham have amazing grounds.

Toronto grounds are trash because there are too many people and maintenance is not good. However, Sunnybrook Park is still an amazing ground. It is very picturesque.

Don't have much idea about King City. I never visited that ground.

BTW, King City actually hosted international games before. Canada used to play first class games there.

Jimmy neesham is the new choker with the bat or balll he cost royals the the first game as wel and now also this one how can you not defend 18 runs against a batsman who hasn’t even played first class or international cricket pathetic

It is kind of a small ground. Also, Neesham is more like a part-time bowler. His main strength is batting.

Bro this tournament is such a disgrace to these players nobody even shows up and Canada is a terrible place to play cricket I can’t beleibe they are doing it again this year it was a massive flop last year honestly their is not a single Canadian born person on our Canadian team or even that is white all are south Asian cricket has no future in Canada just stop it

Exactly what I was thinking. Cricket Canada seems to be a circus of a setup, run exclusively by Desis. Why does it not reflect the multicultural nature of Canada's population? Is it because the whites are not interested, or because the paindoo desis want to keep it as their fiefdom?

I don't really get these types of comments. This is a new tournament, being played when currently there is lack of infrastructure and understanding of the game in Canada. This is the start of something which could become bigger and bigger each year. It's only Year 2 of the tournament, give it time. The infrastructure will improve even if they can build a 15-20,000 seat stadium or re-purpose another ground.

The game is definitely growing but your argument can also be made for Hockey Canada. Why doesn't Hockey Canada reflect the multicultural nature of Canada's population? It's run by a bunch of old white guys who don't want to give up their power and prestige. If you look at Canada's senior men's cricket team there is a mixture of players born overseas as well as some 1st and 2nd generation Canadians. There are lots of desis immigrating to Canada and less from countries such as England, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

What this tournament has going for it is that it can attract some big names because the top pay is $100k or more and secondly it's played in the summer in a 1st world country where safety/security isn't a concern. They could conceivably attract any big name if the league becomes big enough and playing schedules align. Good on the organizers for taking a risk with this.

I'm assuming you live in South Asia or in the Middle East. There are way too many main stream sports here and those sports are far more attracting than Cricket to be honest. Even Baseball is dying. Cricket is first of all not even available on mainstream channel so there is no way for the non desis to even accidentally run into cricket. Main stream channel will suffer loss if they air cricket, so cricket is not even know. Most won't even know what it is even if they run into cricket. Then it comes to liking. Cricket is too complicated, too long, not attractive as they mostly see brown guys who aren't seem cool in the first place (yikes I know).

Then participation, cricket is too expensive to play for fun. Most team won't let you bowl if you getting smacked around everywhere, then you are wasting whole Summer, weekend playing, standing in the field lol. It is not an easy sport attract and grow. Even most of the Canadian players you see were forced by their daddies at very early age. There is also a bit of segregation between many of the Canadian players that were born elsewhere and moved to Canada vs the guys that were born and grew up in Canada.

Kingcity is trash bro, Malton ground is nice but the pitch is an ugly matting. Why don't you play in Mississauga Cricket Premiere League. It is ran by OCA. They play all their matches in Danville and Mavis which are the best two grounds in Canada. They also play their play offs in Turf wickets. All the matches in Danville are played in Turf with proper groundstaff.

Mississauga is too far for me. I am in Scarborough.

I have played 2-3 games in Mavis. Lovely ground.

I haven't played hard ball cricket since 2015.

Well, cricket is not popular here. We have ice hockey, basketball, American Football, baseball etc. Those sports get higher priorities.

Only subcontinental people and Caribbeans play it here.

Shoaib Malik to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, fuller ball outside the off stump. Hafeez looks to slog it away and gets a top edge. The fielder at short fine-leg settles under it and takes the catch. Poor shot

Lol I went to one game only like 500 people in a 10000 capacity bleachers on a Sunday and that even in Brampton where south asians and Caribbean people rule. That shows you how flop it is but it was great entertainment not gonna lie my first time going to a cricket game and afridi fired. But coming to the main point this seems like a very bookie galore league wasim akram was here for a week watching just some games didn’t have anything to do with any teams and left like yesterday. Bet365 covers it as well and the chasing team has won every game except one so it’s all very fishy and scammy. Even if u ignore my conspiracy theories the league is very dull and boring and it’s a disgrace for such big names to be playing infront of Empty stands in a 50 metre boundary. Never the less like the upcoming euro league t20 cricket is getting extremely ruined with these cheap t20 leagues all over the world soon players will quit playing cricket for national teams and will only play franchise cricket it’s a better option so why wouldn’t one

Unpaid wages? Didn't expect it in Canada.

Organizers should ensure these things don't happen. It is not good for Canadian cricket's image.

Cricket has no future in Canada. League management or investors are wasting their time. They can invest in much better places.

Number of brown people in Canada is increasing day by day. There is no reason why cricket can't have a future in Canada. But, these leagues need to be monitored.

Bit of a world is ending attitude there bro. Cricket can have a bright future, this league can go somewhere as it will grow each year. Nobody will have an issue playing in Canada in the summer so they could conceivably attract any of the big names once they gain financial security. Give it a chance.

46* off 26 balls for Shoaib Malik today, apparently he broke a couple of windows with a six... One wicket apiece for Afridi/Wahab.

Wolves gave been best team but Zafar took three tickets in an over and they've collapsed in a heap

The organizers are reliant on Indian brodcast rights. Also it helps wash your black money into white money. The tournament has better crowds compared to last year, temporary stadium looks much better, they brough curators from Australia. It is overall an improved tournament for what it is. Cricket Canada will use this to advertise their local players, maybe next time when Canada plays USA 50 or 100 people come watch. These tournaments have long term affects on Cricket in Canada. Canada's cricket participation isn't much far from Jamaica, Trinidad or NZ. If countries like Trinidad and Guyana can produce such talents, Canada can too. The grassroot level cricket in Canada is now much better. The young kids are much more talented, they have the talent, they just lack the brain. But I like what I'm seeing.

Impressed with few of the Canadian and associate talents. They didn't look apart compared to the rest.

I would agree. The game is slowly gaining momentum in Canada. I don't see Canada that far behind any of the other associate sides. With some more money coming in the players could focus more time on training and coaching.

Brampton will build a new state-of-the-art cricket stadium. The realization that the country needs a world-class facility was driven home during the second Global T20 League that ended on Sunday with Winnipeg Hawks stunning Vancouver Knights in the final before a record crowd of 6,000 at the CAA Centre in Brampton. Among the superstars in the six-team league that was played over 21/2-weeks were India’s Yuvraj Singh, Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, West Indians Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine and South Africa’s World Cup skipper Faf du Plessis. The other marquee player who added a curiosity factor to the tournament was Mohammad Irfan, who at 7-foot-1 is the world’s tallest cricketer. The Pakistani fast bowler, who suited up for Winnipeg, thrilled fans with his bouncers and had the batsmen on their toes with his deliveries that were clocked in and around 140 km/h.

With turf transported from Indianapolis for a new wicket and a plush new field laid out in less than three months at a cost of $3 million (U.S.), Gurmeet Singh, owner and CEO of Bombay Sports Club of the GT20 League said these annual costs could be utilized in other areas if a stadium is built as soon as possible. It didn’t take Patrick Brown, the Mayor of Brampton, long to step in.

“With the ever-changing demographics of our city and with the enthusiasm I have seen during this tournament we have decided Brampton will be the capital of cricket in Canada,’’ he told The Sun. “I was elated when the organizers approached our council last year with a proposal to host the tournament here and we pushed aggressively for it as players such as Yuvraj, Gayle and Shahid Afridi are such big role models for our youngsters. The game is growing rapidly and since most of the recent immigrants come from countries where the game is the main sport, it’s time for the players to get a world-class stadium in our city.”

Brown wasn’t willing to divulge the cost, seating capacity or where the world-class facility would be erected. But The Sun learned it will be built in Meadows Gore in the north end of the city where there’s already a massive community centre. Brown added the stadium will be “built fairly soon,’’ but until then it’s almost a certainty the tournament will return to the CAA Centre next year as the venue has proved popular with the vast majority of the fans who live in Brampton and Mississauga. The stadium will also house a cricket academy where 24 players picked from the national squad, the developmental and under-19 teams will start training and then embark on its first international trip to Australia later this year. Singh said that his firm will likely help financially with the upkeep of the stadium and also the academy. In a lofty bid to help Canada qualify for the next World Cup the players in the academy will be assisted by top-rated coaches and also be paid $30,000 a year. “We want to make it as professional an environment for the players as possible who now have to juggle between full-time jobs and play the game on a part-time basis,” Gurmeet Singh said.

In its first season last year the tournament was played in King City and the venue proved highly unpopular because of the long commute. But the league grabbed headlines across the cricketing world after it snagged Australians Steve Smith and David Warner to commit to play here. It was the first appearance for the two batsmen following that sandpaper cheating scandal in South Africa. The two were banned from playing at home and internationally for one year but were allowed to ply their trade elsewhere. The two Aussies backed off this year since they were involved in the World Cup, but have indicated their willingness to return to Canada in 2020. “We would have had a much bigger field of world-class players if not for the World Cup,’’ said Gurmeet Singh. “And some of the big names like Warner and Smith have confirmed to me that they will return next year since they enjoyed their stay in Canada in 2018.” He added New Zealand World Cup captain Kane Williamson and pace bowler Trent Boult will also be back after having had to withdraw at the last minute because of a Test series against Sri Lanka.
Even though the top international players earn only as much as $100,000 for the tournament unlike the rewards reaped by playing in India’s IPL and Australia’s Big Bash League most of the players combine their playing stint here with a family vacation. “The money does not matter,’’ said Dinesh Chandimal, former captain of Sri Lanka. “The facilities and the hospitality here have been first class and the next time I hope to bring in the family as well.”

New Zealand’s World Cup star Colin Munro was also full of praise for the organizers and a chance to play in Canada. “Canada is an amazing place to play in and visit,’’ said the hard-hitting opening Kiwi batsman. “I have met some of the Canadian players in international tournaments and I have been more than willing to pass on my knowledge to them.”

Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik May to join Global T20

It is the dawn of a new day for the world of cricket, after a 3-year hiatus brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian Men’s T20 tournament is back and will be hosted at the Brampton Sports Park from July 20th – August 6th, 2023

Sport has a unique ability to shine in the face of adversity and grow in strength and determination and this is indeed demonstrated by Cricket Canada and Global T20 management.

With 6 (six) franchises participating in the tournament, each team will comprise of a total of 16 (sixteen) players from full and associate nations, including two (2) world renowned marquee players, three (3) Canadian National team players and three (3) emerging Canadian Cricketers, who will play 25 matches over 18 days.

The first two editions of the Global T20 saw some of the most renowned names from around the world, including the likes of Chris Gayle, Yuvraj Singh, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, David Warner, Steve Smith, Brendon McCullum and Thisara Perera, as players and the likes of Wasim Akram, Brian Lara and Mahela Jayawardene as mentors.

With Canada regaining ODI status, Global T20 will work as a catalyst to kick start our campaign to realize our vision to be amongst the top Associate Nations,’ said Rashpal Bajwa, Cricket Canada President.

Absolutely loved attending this the last time they played. Such a godsend for fans like me who are ordinarily unable to watch cricket live
