[VIDEOS] Rehan Ahmed - Young spinner from England

Two more wickets for Rehan tonight, doing great for Leics this season.

Looks like a talent!

amazing spinner for his age, genuine talent and potential replacement for adil rashid.

see - for all the so called age fudgers - accusing players - rehan dont look 16 - looks like 18/19yr old.

All the best to him - lets see how far he can go

Decent talent but, needs to generate more pace on the bowl to be consistently effective at top level as variations are something which now a days are found out soon. Its with how much accuracy, revs and pace that you can vary (LOIs generally require quicker pace for leggie with flighted ones in between) that play a role at top level. He will get bit more pace with age and should specifically train for that as well during his training regime.

England need quality spinners!

This kid looks very promising!

Work in progress but looks pretty good.

One to keep an eye on.

Bowls fast spin but doesn't have an effective leg spinner that will get people out in the longer forms. He will have a good T20 career because of his consistent lengths

England Men's selection panel have named a 13-player squad for England Lions' two Royal London 50-over internationals against South Africa, starting on 12 July at Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton.

England Lions squad:

Tom Abell (Somerset) (Captain)
Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire)
Tom Banton (Somerset) (WK)

Mo Bobat, ECB Performance Director, said: "It's always great when we can bring some of our best and highest potential players together, particularly to take on senior international opposition.

“The two games provide an excellent opportunity to continue to grow our depth and assess players' readiness for England.

"The squad reflects a balance of England's next best players and some future players of note, as well as high performers from this season's Vitality Blast campaign.

"With these games coming at the same time as England ODIs versus India and a County Championship round, we're very appreciative of the collaborative approach of counties, enabling us to field strong teams."

The first match at Taunton will permit full squad participation to facilitate South Africa Team preparation for the international white-ball programme, but the second match at Worcester will be played as an 11-a-side List-A match.

England to call up 18-year-old Rehan Ahmed after just three first-class matches
Exclusive: Teenage leg-spinner expected to be retained for Test tour to Pakistan following his involvement with the Lions

Rehan Ahmed, the 18-year-old Leicestershire leg-spinner, is set to be involved in his first senior England squad next month, despite playing only three first-class games.

England will take an expanded squad to Abu Dhabi for an intra-squad warm-up match involving England Lions. That will provide preparation for the three-Test tour of Pakistan in December.

Ahmed will be named in the Lions group, and is expected to be retained for the Test tour, likely as a net bowler and travelling reserve, raising the possibility that he could become England men’s youngest Test debutant.

Against Derbyshire last month, Ahmed finished the county season in some style. His third first-class match brought both a maiden century (a glittering 122 from 113 balls at No 5) and a maiden five-wicket haul (five for 114).

Ahmed has been on the radar of cricket fans longer than the average teenager with three first-class games to his name for the county that finished last in this year’s Championship.

He has been a player of national interest for some time. In 2016, aged just 11 and then in the Nottinghamshire system, he was invited to bowl with the England team before a Test at Lord’s, and dismissed Ben Stokes. A similar call came the following summer, and he continued to impress.

This year, he was also invited in for an altogether more serious session with Adil Rashid before an ODI in Manchester. More serious because, by then, although still a teenager, he was a professional player being seriously considered for full international honours.

He took 12 wickets in four matches at this year’s Under-19 World Cup, which saw England beaten in the final by India. In the English summer, he was an ever-present for Leicestershire in this year’s Vitality Blast, picking up 19 wickets in 14 matches, then played five of Southern Brave’s eight matches in the Hundred, where he was on a contract worth £50,000.

Many in England’s pathway see Ahmed as the long-term successor to Rashid in the white-ball setup, but it is in Test cricket that his first call is coming. He will go to Abu Dhabi as an England Lion in November, then is set to continue to Pakistan for the three-Test series in December.

He was signed up to play in the inaugural Pakistan Junior League, which a handful of English youngsters are currently playing in. But Ahmed withdrew in anticipation of a busy winter (as well as his England calls, he will play for Gulf Giants in the inaugural ILT20 in the United Arab Emirates. His coach there will be Andy Flower).

In white-ball cricket, Ahmed has made a name for himself by bowling a mix of googlies and leg-breaks into the pitch, but England hope time in their set-up will develop his red-ball bowling and help him get up to speed fitness-wise.

England have plenty of cricket in Asia coming up, meaning spinners are required. They are planning Lions trips to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, for both red and white-ball cricket in the new year. That may help prepare for five Tests in India – where England have won one of their last 10 matches – in early 2024, a tour Ahmed may be earmarked for involvement in.

England have only capped one 18-year-old in Test cricket, Brian Close, against New Zealand at Old Trafford in 1949. He was 18 years and 149 days old, meaning Ahmed, born in August 2004, would pip him as England’s youngest if he were to play this year. In recent years, Sam Curran and Haseeb Hameed both played Test cricket as teenagers.

An early debut for Ahmed would be significant for other reasons.

Leicestershire have not had a player capped by England since 2011, when James Taylor made his debut, shortly before moving to Nottinghamshire. Coincidentally, Taylor, 32, returned to the club on Monday as their new batting coach.

Ahmed’s younger brother, Farhan, is also causing excitement. Another spin-bowling all-rounder, the 14-year-old has been playing for Nottinghamshire Seconds.

Ahmed’s elevation reveals his promise, but also the paucity of spin options for England.

Moeen Ali has declared that he remains retired from Test cricket, while Rashid has not played a red-ball match of any sort since his last Test, in January 2019. Jack Leach is the only certainty for the XI (and the only red-ball spinner among 30 contracted players), which will probably require more than one spinner. Will Jacks, who has outlined his plans to become a genuine all-rounder, is likely to make the tour, with Liam Livingstone another hard-hitting part-time option.

Matt Parkinson’s stock – and confidence – has fallen since replacing Leach as a concussion sub in the opening Test of the season against New Zealand at Lord’s. By the end of the summer, his place as concussion and Covid sub (which requires the player to be on standby, rather than at the ground), had been taken by Liam Patterson-White, the Nottinghamshire all-rounder who took more Championship wickets (41 at 28) than any other English spinner this summer.

Dom Bess endured a tricky season at Yorkshire and will play grade cricket in Sydney this winter, while Mason Crane only made the Hampshire Championship side once.

A more experienced option is Liam Dawson, the Hampshire, all-rounder, who is with England as a travelling reserve for the T20 World Cup having impressed on the white-ball leg of the Pakistan tour with bat and ball.

Dawson has not played a Test since 2017 but remains a consistent performer for Hampshire.

Shame no Rashid

That’s amazing for Rehan. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. The England selectors are often cautious and would not go for such a young player unless they were confident in his abilities. Hopefully he gets a Test debut this winter.

Rehan Ahmed could become England’s youngest men’s Test cricketer after Leicestershire’s teenage leg‑spinner was added to the squad for the tour of Pakistan next month.

If selected during the three-match series that begins in Rawalpindi on 1 December, Ahmed, aged 18 years and 102 days, would beat the record held by Brian Close (18 years and 149 days against New Zealand in 1949) and become his county’s first England player since James Taylor in 2011.

The call-up was announced after day one of England’s three‑day warm‑up against the Lions in Abu Dhabi, with Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, captain and head coach respectively, undeterred by Ahmed’s figures of eight overs, none for 73 as the senior players racked up a dizzying 501 for seven from 79 overs.

“We know he’s not the finished article and has raw potential,” said McCullum, who broke the news to Ahmed at tea. “But Ben, myself and the rest of the coaches like how he approaches his game. The experience of being part of the squad in Pakistan will be hugely beneficial for him, and he will add to the makeup of our squad.”

Ahmed has unquestionably been selected on potential, having played three first-class matches. His summer ended in encouraging fashion, at least, recording a maiden first-class century (122 from 113 balls) and a five-wicket haul (five for 114 from 28.2 overs) in a draw against Derbyshire at Grace Road.

The England Under-19s international, who has already attracted interest on the franchise Twenty20 circuit, will provide an additional option for Stokes. Before his call-up, Jack Leach was the only frontline spinner in the touring party, supported by two uncapped batting all-rounders in Will Jacks and Liam Livingstone.

As well as Ahmed’s news, Ollie Pope scoring 146 from 120 balls, 96 from opener Zak Crawley and Jacks cracking 84 from 48 balls, England’s warm-up fixture at the Sheikh Zayed Complex featured a heartening return to action for Jofra Archer after the fast bowler’s 18‑month injury lay‑off.

From the McCullum quotes it looks like he is not being considered for a starting spot, probably just there to be a net bowler and get some experience of an international dressing room.

Pakistani batters have a history of making decent spinners look unplayable. Good move by Rob Key’s new England.

Misbah-ul-Haq on Rehan:

He caught my attention when we met in England seven years ago. It was a joy to watch him outperform his peers with his Googly. Congrats
to Rehan Ahmed and your family. I am really happy to see your progress. Good luck.

A clip of cricket legend Shane Warne has emerged, showing the Australian tipping England prospect Rehan Ahmed for greatness when he was just 13 years of age. Now 18, Ahmed proved to be the breakout star in the 2022 County Championship season.

His impressive form for Leicestershire has now earned him a call up to the England setup, and, if selected, he will become his nation's youngest ever Test player. According to the great Warne though, Ahmed was always destined for greatness.

The video on social media shows a 13-year-old Ahmed shaking the hand of the Aussie leg spinner, who tips Ahmed to be playing first class cricket 'very soon'.

Warne - who sadly passed away earlier this year - was heard telling the young spinner: "That is awesome man! Really, really good, I am going to keep a close eye on you. I think we will be commentating on you very soon.

"I think you are going to be playing first class cricket by the age of 15!" Of course, the Australian great was not too far out with his prediction. Warne though was not the only big name in the sport to notice Ahmed's talents at a young age.

saw a twitter post on the lad talking about his family in Pakistan, all the replies are indian fans spamming underneath. i mean englands former captain was born in india but ethnic pakistanis playing for england is somehow an issue?

i for one think its great that adil, mo, saq, and now rehan are in and around the eng team, to have four internationals from a population of about a million is really good going, also puts paid to a lot of the chat about selection being harder if ur ethnic, if ur good enough you will make it.

Esp. as since Amir Khan a lot of the British-Pakistani youth is going into boxing, some of the most promising young UK boxers being British-Pakistanis (the Azim brothers, Hamzah Sheeraz, ...), so that makes it even more impressive I guess.

Pakistan are awful against leg-spin at the moment.

I just hope he doesn't play or this could get rather embarrassing for Pakistan.

An exciting addition to England's Test squad for Pakistan in December is Rehan Ahmed. Just 18 years old, he would become the youngest man ever to play a Test for England if he is given a debut next month.

"We've seen him as one of those very rare talents. To have someone at such a young age be so noticeable as a cricketer with the way that he bowls and the way that he bats. We saw it as a very good opportunity to get him into the squad, get him around the group, get him into the environment," Stokes said.

"He's a fantastic talent, he loves cricket, he just spends all his time shadow-batting in his room," he added. "He absolutely loves it. I'm really excited to have him into the squad, get him round the group and see what he's got."

Stokes however warns that Ahmed shouldn't be placed under too much scrutiny at this stage. He is still developing.

"We're also fully aware that he's not the finished project yet. I think it's important for his inclusion not be to be looked into too much," Stokes said.

"We see this as an opportunity to get someone as talented as Rehan into the squad, nurture him and then who knows where we could be in two to three years' time?

"If we feel like we want to chuck him a Test cap then we're in a position to do that as well."

He isn't much of a leg spinner( unless he has improved beyond recognition since I saw him bowl). The ball goes straight on, with the odd one holding its line. If we can't play him, it's time to give up.

Cue wickets galore in the Test series if he gets a chance.

No experience or anything. Poor stuff from ECB to throw him in interantional cricket. Pakistan is gonna mull this kid.

he shouldnt be in the squad. Too early to bring him in when he has no experience.

Would had been better if England used their other spinners here

There isnt much to choose from in terms of spinners. Certainly a lack of quality.

McCullum has won 6 Tests out of 7 since he took over the team, there will always be varying opinions out there but he has fully earned England fans’ trust in his personal judgment.

Our batsmen do have a habit of making new or unknown spinners look good.

He spends too much energy on each delivery. Spinners are supposed to be workhorses. Does he have the fitness levels to fit the bill?

(Reuters) - England coach Brendon McCullum said Rehan Ahmed has a fantastic opportunity to showcase his talent on the three-test series in Pakistan and has no doubts the 18-year-old has the confidence and ability to overcome the challenges he will face on tour.

All-rounder Ahmed has featured in only three first-class matches for Leicestershire - taking nine wickets and making 195 runs - and could become England's youngest men's test player if he plays in Pakistan next month.

"What a fabulous kind of opportunity for someone like him," McCullum told the Daily Telegraph. "He seems really confident in himself.

"He's 18 and on an England tour to Pakistan so there's some real opportunities there and there'll be some challenges along the way, but it's our job to figure this out.

"We know that he's not the finished product. He's a long way away from that, but he's got something which is pretty kind of special."

Ahead of their Pakistan tour, England played a three-day match against the Lions in the United Arab Emirates last week.

McCullum stressed the importance of bringing teams together in the build-up to a tour, saying it helps develop camaraderie in a squad that frequently separates to play different formats.

"One learning we had from earlier on in the year is that because now the team is very separate to the Twenty20 set up," McCullum said.

"A lot of our guys go off and they do their own thing, so if we're asking these guys to push the boundaries, then we need to get them together a bit earlier.

"A lot of that is not to do with cricket but breaking down those barriers, spending time socially, playing golf or at the pool. Once you have spent a couple of days together, you can put the graft in and start ticking off the skill side of things."

England's first match against Pakistan begins on Thursday in Rawalpindi.

England will make Rehan Ahmed their youngest Test cricketer on Friday as they seek a whitewash in the third and final match against Pakistan in Karachi.

Leicestershire leg-spinner Ahmed, at 18 years and 126 days, will beat the record set by Brian Close in 1949 by 23 days. Ahmed only made his first-class debut in May and has played just three matches for his county.

'He just loves cricket,' said England captain Ben Stokes. 'I'm struggling to work out if he is a batter or a leg-spinner, which is good because it shows how much talent he has got.

'When we spoke about adding Rehan to the squad, it was more than just integrating him. We had no issues with selecting him if we felt it was the right option.

'If he plays, I don't think it is a case of giving caps away. Having a wrist-spinner is always exciting, especially for England, but it is about not getting too carried away with his potential. You have still got to nurture talent, however exciting it is.'

Ahmed will likely replace Will Jacks as the only change for England, seeking to become the first touring team to complete a 3-0 clean sweep in Pakistan.

Glad to see him get a test!

But the side is unbalanced by Stokes’ lack of bowling these days so they have dropped their good keeper for a backstop.

How does one get experience? By playing! Even Shane Warne got mullered to begin with.

Vast majority of British Asian players are mentally weak & fizzle out quickly because they are either not good enough or cannot handle the pressure.

Hopefully he will be different & can prove to be Adil Rashid’s successor.

Teenage leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed will become England's youngest men's Test cricketer after being awarded his debut in the final game of the series against Pakistan in Karachi from Saturday.

The Leicestershire player will be 18 years and 126 days when the final Test begins, beating the record of Brian Close, who was 18 years and 149 days when he played against New Zealand in Manchester in July 1949.

Ahmed is one of two changes to the England side as the tourists seek a historic 3-0 series sweep and a ninth win in 10 Tests since Ben Stokes became captain and Brendon McCullum head coach.

Ahmed and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes come into the XI, in place of seamer James Anderson and off-spinning all-rounder Will Jacks.

Foakes will regain the gloves from Surrey team-mate Ollie Pope, who kept in the first Test in Rawalpindi when Foakes was ill and then retained his spot behind the stumps for the second fixture in Multan.
Ahmed will not be the youngest person to play a Test for England, with that accolade going to Holly Colvin, who was 15 years and 336 days when she played for the women's team against Australia at Hove in 2005.

Speaking about the inclusion of Ahmed, who has played just three first-class games, Stokes said: "Having a wrist-spinner is always exciting, especially for England.

"But it's about not getting too carried away with the potential that he has because he is only young. You've still got to nurture talent, no matter how exciting it is."

"I think it's a good opportunity for us to not only look at him but for him to come in and experience what it's like to play international cricket.

Ahmed was not initially in England's Test squad but impressed Stokes, McCullum and England's managing director of men's cricket Rob Key on a pre-series training camp in Abu Dhabi.

"We obviously brought him in to try and get him amongst us and experience what it's like being in this cricket team and we've been very impressed with what we've seen.

"He's got a lot of skill with both bat and ball, so it's great to be able to bring someone with the talent and the excitement that he has into the squad and see what he's got.

Ahmed took 12 wickets as England Under-19s reached the final of the World Cup in the West Indies earlier this year, while he picked up a five-wicket haul and scored a century in the same game while playing for Leicestershire against Derbyshire in the County Championship in September.

Ahmed's summer also included playing for England Lions against South Africa in red-ball cricket and making five appearances for Southern Brave in The Hundred.

Stokes added: "I think being at such a young age, it's great to see someone who has so much freedom in what they do. The way that he bats, he likes to get on with it and show what he's about. He's got a vast array of shots.

"Obviously a wrist-spinner is great to be able to have in your team, especially in these conditions.

"We've taken a look at the wicket. It looks very dry and I think it might spin a bit more than it did in the last Test match - but I'm not great at looking at pitches!

"It's exciting times for Rehan and he was very excited when we gave him the nod.

Sky Sports Cricket's Michael Atherton...

"Ahmed bowls brisk leg-spinners and googlies, he gives it a bash down the order and Stokes and McCullum like what they saw in Abu Dhabi. It is a dry-looking pitch which England think will spin, therefore a perfect opportunity to give young Rehan his debut. It is quite the story and an amazing rise to the top.

"He is clearly a very talented young man - he has played for England Under-19s and been on the radar for some time - and England are not blessed with a great number of spinners in county cricket. The Stokes and McCullum management team are also not afraid of taking a risk.

"Sometimes English cricket gets a bad wrap when it comes to young cricketers, there is a feeling they don't really throw them in, but we have picked quite a few teenagers [over the years], enough 18, 19, 20, 21-year-olds when they are good enough."

Worked fine for Denis Compton. He was only a few days older than this youngster when they threw him into a match against Bradman.

Ace. Give the old fella a rest. So that’s two quicks and two spinners - a Wood at last getting the new ball!

I bet that Robinson will bowl the first over and then SuperBen will give the new ball to Leach, with Wood coming on later… just for you :P

Pakistan has a terrible record against leg spinners. We have struggle to deal with Hasaranga's, Adil Rashid's, Imran Tahir's googlies, this could be a master stroke by Stokes.

England haven’t done much wrong in this series but Rehan’s selection seems bizarre. Still too raw and cannon fodder at this level currently.

Not sure why Matt Parkinson was not selected for this tour?

Got to admit [MENTION=1842]James[/MENTION], you called it.

Rehan Ahmed becomes the youngest men's England cricketer after 3 fc games for Leicestershire beating the record set by Brian Close in 1949.

Close made his debut for Yorkshire in May that year and England in July in between he played 18 fc matches

It was like trying to hit a bullseye blindly. He is not ready yet.

He’s just a young kid who has bowled five overs of legspin on a dead pitch, and it was the first morning of a Test match. Let’s see how the match plays out across the five days. Even if he doesn’t settle down, legspinners can take a while to get going in Test cricket and he has a long future ahead of him.

Lol, i thik i said this before. Young player, no experience....

And thats what happened.

Terrible move by england.

First wicket!

After beating Shakeel’s outside edge with a ripper of a googly, the next ball, a leg-break, loops up to Pope at short leg and the soft signal is out.

Replays show it was clearly bat onto pad and Pope’s superb one-handed grab lunging forward means England’s youngest-ever men’s Test cricketer has his first Test wicket!

The graphic below was shown just before the wicket and highlighted that it was hard for batters to spot the difference between Ahmed’s googly and leg-spinner out of the hand. We saw both balls consecutively as Shakeel was first beaten and then dismissed. Ahmed struggled with his length before lunch but not on this occasion.

Lovely piece of bowling for his first wicket.

Dismissed a good batter and in form player as well.

Well he has a wicket. Set up Shakeel nicely. A great move by England to give him exposure in a dead rubber test match. Rehan has every chance especially against a shambolic batting line up

I think England might as well incorporate this in to their onboarding for international debutants.

Wait for a series vs Pakistan.

Then monitor players in bad form, if they require a little boost to their confidence.

Wait for a series Vs Pakistan.

Do you have some ideas for out of the box field placings.

Wait for a series Vs Pakistan.

Well he is raw and expensive, and he serves up some buffet balls, but he is very young, and you can see the thinking and planning behind his bowling. An interesting prospect.

Looks raw.

Needs some work on his action but spins the ball and has variety.

Great experience this for him to be playing Test cricket at such a young age.

Will only get better this lad.

He won't spin the ball away from right handers with that action so unless something changes, I don't see what he will bring to the table

He’s all over Salman Agha like a cheap suit.

Seems to have warmed up now, getting some revs.

Another wicket for the young fellow.

Settled down and bowling quite beautifully now, he’s having a bit of fun out there.

Pakistan is a great team to debut against for any cricketer, particularly if you are a spinner.

Rehan Ahmed: It was a great day

England debutant Rehan Ahmed, after taking 2-89 on day one against Pakistan...

"Bowling them out for 300 in a day was great - and also getting my first wicket.

"I just take everything for itself. I didn't expect to play, I just came to get better and they gave me a chance.

"I couldn't sleep or eat [yesterday], but it was a great day."

He picked two wickets, and went for 4 an over. Whats yhe judgement? Better than abrar or close enough?

Started poorly with too many bad balls but was looking far better in the latter half of the innings.

The experience of bowling to his older brother during childhood helped Rehan Ahmed make Saud Shakeel his first victim in Test cricket.

It is not so long ago the 18-year-old was bowling against left-handed batter Raheem, who has featured for Leicestershire's second XI, back at home and Rehan's tactic for setting him up was his favourite googly followed by a leg-spinner.

After becoming England's youngest men's Test cricketer at the age of 18 years and 126 days, his debut coming 23 days earlier than Brian Close's had done as a teenager in 1949, the Leicestershire right-armer went on to finish with figures of 2-89 after Pakistan were bowled out for 304.

It was very much a family affair for Ahmed at the National Stadium beyond putting into practice what he learned bowling against his eldest sibling though, with his father Naseem invited into the huddle pre-match as his middle son was presented with his first England cap.

Naseem, originally from the Pakistani city of Mirpur and a keen cricketer himself, was delighted to see his son starring on the international stage and Ahmed was proud to have him there after the support the former all-rounder has given to him, Raheem and youngest brother Farhan, who has already played second XI cricket for Nottinghamshire at the age of 14.

"He was huge," Ahmed said of his father's influence. "He loved cricket himself and the three of us all loved the sport. He backed us all the way; late nights, early mornings - he was always there.

"It was a big day. He's put in a lot of hard work for my family to set all of us up, so he's not just been good for me.

"I didn't expect to play, I just came to get better, and they gave me a chance."

Ahmed admitted he did not expect to be part of the team for the final match of the series as England seek a 3-0 whitewash, having been called up after impressing in a pre-tour training camp in Abu Dhabi and spent much of his time in Pakistan closely with spin coach Jeetan Patel.

He only had three first-class matches in county cricket to his name before being thrust into the international spotlight as well, but the support of head coach Brendon McCullum and skipper Ben Stokes have proven vital for him.

"I think I rushed a little bit in my first spell, but it came out better than I expected. I know I got hit for boundaries, but Stokesy was like 'I don't care about the runs, just get me wicket'," Ahmed said.

"The second spell I just went in, forgot about the runs and wanted to take wickets, and it happened.

"The way Baz and Stokesy have backed me, that's all I needed to know so it felt great."

Nothing special.

Early days — if I recollect correctly Warne went for 1/150 in his debut against India. Not much better in the next match and then got dropped.

Given Ahmed’s age and lack of experience (four first class matches) it’s a bit embarrassing how easily he settled in against the Pakistani batsmen.

even if hes average now, just being the in the England system he's gonna improve, maybe not tomorrow, but he has time on his side, and I'm guessing they'll keep selecting him as a spin bowling all rounder in asian conditions.
