[VIDEOS] Shaheen Shah Afridi starts to bowl again as part of his rehabilitation from knee injury

Aaqib Javed:

"It could be due to workload. Shaheen has been playing cricket continuously. No doubt, it's a huge loss for Pakistan before Asia Cup and the team will feel his absence"

"Team management should deal with patience. Do not panic in this situation and let Shaheen recover completely. He has a long career ahead"

"Previously, it was Amir and then Shaheen, left-arm pacers always gave tough time to Indian batters. Amir led us to victory in Champions Trophy 2017 and Shaheen in T20 World Cup 2021"

Aqib seems to agree workload has played a part.

Solid bit of advice there. Don't rush him back now and don't panic, we will be fine (if Hasan doesn't return!)

I completely agree with Aaqib that he should be allowed to recover completely. At the same time hope he gets to that level in October before tri series vs NZ and BD to get ready for World T20.

Maybe time for PSL franchises to assist their players during their injury recovery as well as after all someone like Shaheen adds bug chunk to LQ brand value. Like we have seen Mumbai Indian did with Bumrah during his previous back injury. Ofcourse by taking the home board into conference and if required.

It was an injury waiting to happen.

Sooner or later he was going to pick up a serious injury.

It was an injury waiting to happen.

Sooner or later he was going to pick up a serious injury.

I think this is a bit harsh.

Everyone loves to criticize the board but this does not seem like a workload injury. He did not get a stress fracture from being over bowled. He stumbled awkwardly while fielding and damaged a ligament.

Weather he bowled 1000 overs this year or 10, this could have happened.

Unfortunately PCB will never learn. They will do same thing in future.

He can't be playing all 3 formats!
Very soon he needs to make a decision to skip one format - ODIs or T20s. Also he should not depend of our desi experts and management because they will want him to play every single game, even if it's against U.A.E or Netherlands.

It was due to the fielding effort during 1st Srl test. So while workload management should be talked about it has nothing to do here. I believe its not a tear as if that would have been the case recovery time would have been much more.

World T20 is the main thing, hopefully he would be fit for that.

Shahid Afridi warned him about not diving too much in the field. He was right. He is Pakistan’s biggest pace asset and he doesn’t need to be risking injuries by trying to be too athletic in the field

There is no need for him to play T20i

He should just play ICC tournaments like Trent Boult does

Is Afridi just trying to be funny or was SSA injured due to diving rather than work load :13:

Am sad to find out SSA is injured. A true world class bowler.
But he ain't the second coming of Marshall Garner & Akram and Frankly Waqar was one hell of a legend as a player, maybe not as competent as a coach but since his comments in the WC 2021 after indo-pak game & the comment above , he's certifed vaccuum between his ears

Pictures from PCB video - seemed to be in discomfort

Extreme sad to see his state. I mean it's been a month now since his injury and he can barely walk.
Seems like a really bad injury.

Don't think he will make the wc.

I hope he is able to return this year.

Yeah it seems like he probably needs surgery, but they're delaying it hoping it heals

Update on Shaheen Shah Afridi

Dubai, 29 August 2022:

The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced Shaheen Shah Afridi has departed for London where he will complete his rehabilitation.

PCB Chief Medical Officer, Dr Najeebullah Soomro: “Shaheen Shah Afridi requires uninterrupted, dedicated knee specialist care and London offers some of the best sports medical and rehabilitation facilities in the world. In the best interest of the player, we have decided to send him there.

“The medical department will receive daily feedback on his progress whilst in London and we are confident Shaheen will return to full fitness before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”

Whilst in London, Shaheen will remain under the supervision of the PCB Medical Advisory Panel, which also comprises London-based Dr Imtiaz Ahmed and Dr Zafar Iqbal. Since 2016, Dr Imtiaz has been the Head of Medical Services at the Queens Park Rangers Football Club, while Dr Zafar is Head of Sports Medicine at the Crystal Palace Football Club since 2015 (having worked previously with Tottenham Hotspur FC, Liverpool FC and Kent County Cricket Club).

Shaheen suffered a PCL injury in July whilst fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka. He is expected to regain complete fitness before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, though his return to competitive cricket will be decided upon by the PCB Medical Advisory Panel.

Just seen a video posted by Shaheen on his twitter in which he is working with Zafar Iqbal..seems like he will be back in weeks rather than months. Very positive news amongst all the negativity

He needs to take as long as he needs. I’d happily he miss the World Cup as long as he fully recovers. Pakistan have to think in the long term, not the short term

Very encouraging this - need him for the WT20

I would prefer he take it easy and rehabilitate carefully and avoid any serious recurrance of the injury.

Shaheen Afridi set to fly in from London for T20 World Cup in Australia

LAHORE: Pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi will start bowling in the first week of October in London after recovering from his knee injury before flying in to Australia to join the Pakistan squad for the T20 World Cup later that month.

Shaheen is set to be one of the first names in the 15-member World Cup due to be announced by chief selector Mohammad Wasim on Thursday, the last day for the submission of squads set by the International Cricket Council. Names of three travelling reserves, who will be available forthwith in case of an injury, are also likely be announced.

Shaheen injured his right knee during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle in July and missed the second Test of the series as well as Pakistan’s tour of the Netherlands and the recently-concluded Asia Cup.

His rehabilitation period was initially slated to end on Aug 28 but he was then also ruled out of this month’s seven-match T20 series against England at home after Pakistan Cricket Board’s medical panel decided to send him to England as he wasn’t unable to recover from the injury.

Dawn learnt on Wednesday that the authorities at the rehabilitation centre in England will allow Shaheen to start bowling at the start of next month and he will join the squad without having played a match in almost three months as he will also not be part of the Pakistan squad for their tri-series in New Zealand, which also features Bangladesh, ahead of the World Cup.

The squad for the upcoming England series as well as the World Cup is likely to have no big surprises despite Pakistan’s poor showing with the bat in their Asia Cup final loss to Sri Lanka.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam struggled with the bat throughout the tournament and the team’s sluggish approach at the top of the order has come for criticism from several former players.

Babar along with Mohammad Rizwan provided Pakistan with slow starts which put the middle order under pressure, most notably in the final against Sri Lanka where they lost by 23 runs. With a middle order comprising pinch-hitters rather than pure batters, it’s an approach that can be a hit or a miss.

Former Pakistan batter Sadiq Mohammad told Dawn on Wednesday that Pakistan should try “a combination of five specialist batters along with two all-rounders and three pacers” during the England series.

“Players like Shan Masood, Imam-ul-Haq, Haider Ali or Abdullah Shafique should be tried during the series,” he said.

Sources told Dawn that Shan is not happy with the treatment meted out to him by the selectors and left the short training camp in Lahore ahead of the tour of the Netherlands as he wanted to play for English county Derbyshire.

Calls for including Shan, who has had a prolific year with the bat in various franchise leagues as well as county cricket, have been rife during the Asia Cup.

Former Pakistan chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq said including Shan, alongside explosive opener Sharjeel Khan and veteran Shoaib Malik — all of whom have been among the runs during the ongoing National T20 Cup, would strengthen Pakistan’s middle order.

“I think Shan , Sharjeel and Malik should be in the team, especially in the middle order,” he told reporters during an event in Lahore.

However, it is unlikely Pakistan will make too many changes to the squad with the World Cup fast approaching.

It took a lot of time for Bumrah to recover from injury and hit the rhythm. Now two more Indian bowlers go through the same phase. Deepak Chahar, Natrajan both don't look at their best after their injury. Will be curious to see how his rhythm will be when he is back.

PCB:

The PCB is also pleased to advise and update that Shaheen Shah Afridi is making excellent progress in his rehabilitation in London and is on track to make a full recovery in time for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Australia 2022.

That is not in their policy unfortunately

Just an alternative argument. Shaheen was picked after 1 first class match. He has very little milage on him. He needs more and more games to develop. Not that bad of an idea to keep him busy.

His injury was not workload related it could have happened during anything

Basic of bowling wise Afridi is better where as Bumrah has (or had) that Novelty factor. So Afridi would take much less time compared to Bumrah to get back into rhythm.

Please note, I am not alluding that Afridi is a better bowler that Bumrah but former has got better basics where as later is a freak.

Hopefully he is fully **** and he gets to play all the practise games just before the world cup.

Alhamdullillah, good to see him making progress

He should sit out the WC, there are bigger fish to fry down the line. Big big gamble by the PCB who didn’t even facilitate his rehab, he can’t trust them with his career anymore

I hope he is not being rushed to get ready for T20 WC.If has fully recovered and feels no discomfort then that is ok, otherwise he should be rested.

LAHORE: National coach Umar Rasheed is to fly to London on Wednesday where he will join Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on Tuesday, informed the media that Rasheed is set to travel to London on Wednesday.

The coach will join Shaheen in London to help him start proper bowling practice.

A terrible idea bringing Shaheen back for the World Cup.

Clear in the video he isn't even putting pressure on his knees.

Any misstep and he can have a career threatening injury.

Will, it's quite logical that he isn't putting preassure on his knees as he is just starting to bowl again, can't go out 100 % right away, but I understand where you are coming from.

If he is feeling good and the professional coaches are there for him, he can gradually increase the workload. There is still time left for the WC so he will have an idea of how it's going. If he is feeling 100% well he should go for it, but if he is not 100% he should definately drop WC from his mind and just take the time required for complete fitness.

How did he clear the fitness test. This is a joke watching him able in and bowling 82 mph floaters in a world cup.

Dearly hope it's just a hiccup and he doesn't have to go through an Umar Gul phase.

Both shaheen and the TM had to take it slow regarding the return of Shaheen so as it not further aggravate it. Pak needs to use him carefully just like India uses Bumrah and England uses Mark wood and not play him in every inconsequential match. especially when they have worthy replacements in the sqaud.

Waqar mentioned that the Doctor looking after Shaheen in England could at best only declare Shaheen physically fit to start bowling again. Only the coaches, captain and players could assess whether Shaheen was actually in Rhythm and bowling effectively in the nets and back to a hundred percent in international cricket. This entire episode has been so shockingly mishandled and heads have to roll for this big time.

As long as he's physically fit, its good for him to keep playing. This is the only way he will build up rhythm and match fitness.

He needs a few games, hit sitting out for the World Cup would have meant he needed even more games after that.

And its not like he's lost pakistan these 2 games, he's been ok, just not contributing much.

Shaheen escorted the ball to the boundary against Zim. He also could not complete the second run which cost Pakistan the match. So eventually his selection even after not at 100% fit might cost Pakistan the tournament.

Allah only helps people who help themselves. Self help comes from Mindset and the will to succeed.

8 overs 0 for 63 in the 2 matches so far at the T20 World Cup.

Nowhere near his best and clearly not fully fit.

This was Babar's and Saqlain's call to play him. According to reporters Ramiz wanted to excercise caution and had cautioned the team management against rushing him back this soon but Babar and Saqlain insisted that they wanted Shaheen in Australia.

Team management will definately be going home after this WC is over.
