[VIDEOS] Talent Spotter: Abdullah Shafique

He needs to massively improve his game against spin. He looks at ease against pace

Babar wasn't great against spin when he started his international cricket but he has improved a lot since then

This is where Muhammad Yousuf needs to justify his job.

Cannot wait to see:

Abdullah
Haider
Babar
Saud
Saif Badar
Hasan Mohsin

as our top 6

Still love how people will hype up any youngster for no reason like this list of 6 people. Babar had class and was a proven performer. IT's great he made it. I always supported him. Haider Ali looks great. Abdullah is too early to judge but he played well in that innings.

How can you prematurely think this will be the top 6 for Pak and why lol. I hear the name SAif Badar but what has he ever done. look at his record and tell me what is great about it https://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan/content/player/922967.html

Abdullah is a mirror image of babz and rohit sharma which is not a bad thing. I have no doubt in the longer format he will be a superstar inshallah

He looked unbelievable today

Has been unlucky in the last few innings

Was given out LBW on 43* when it was hitting his thigh pad and outside the line

And then another innings was out to a stunner of a catch

Top knock today

He rotates strike so efficiently

Much better than Zeeshan

Looks awful against spin bowling. For his betterment he shouldn't be rushed to Pakistan team .Ideally should play quaid azam trophy and should be selected for Pakistan A team against nz

Out done by Mohammad Abbas today - 13 off 9 balls.

Good stuff. Don't want things getting to the young man's head. Abbas is an international level bowler and Abdullah has an opportunity to learn from this.

I agree with this, however things haven't worked this way in Pakistan for a long time now. As soon as a youngster gets the 'promising' tag he's chucked straight in there.

I fully expect Abdullah to get his first international cap against Zim.

Honestly he'd be better served playing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy or the New Zealand A series this winter than playing Zimbabwe.

63 off 48 today - bit disappointed he didnt get to 100 - looked set.

Good variety of shots and knows how to build an innings. The only slight criticism I guess could be his current strike rate in the tournament which is 133, although that could improve in the coming matches.

63 off 48.

A very good Bateman who's how to build an innings properly more suited to tests and odis and replacement for babar in t20s

Should be selected for the ODI matches against Zimbabwe. After that release him to play FC cricket then call him back for NZ A.

Good player need first class experience......for atleast 1 season....
Send him to A tours ....can be given
Debue v Zimbos in ODIS

Misbah on Shafique :

“Abdullah Shafiq has been rewarded for his tremendous potential and performance. He has been identified as a future prospect and, therefore, drafted into the squad as part of his development.

Good selection. Definitely deserves a chance.

Hasan123 I know you're not a fan of Pakistani domestic cricket but you really need to rewatch some of the highlights from National T20 on YouTube.

For the first time in a long time, there was a high quality domestic tournament (awful fielding aside) with six competitive teams and a raft of youngsters elevated including Abdullah Shafique.

Oldies cannot coast on seniority and reputation alone with this new format, especially knowing youngsters like Abdullah and Haider are waiting in the wings.

I have seen some of his highlights. He looks impressive. We can judge him more at international level. It's good that he has been selected.

Great talent needs to work hard now the easily job is done

Well done to abdullah a really good talent hopefully they actually play him in the top 4 in odis and learns from babar

He's done the easier part which is to get his foot in the door.

Now comes the real hard work, performing and establishing himself.

A good opponent to start his international career against.

Hussain Talat is a player I like and who I wanted to see selected. I think he can be a good player at 4.

I think the t20 side is hard to get into espically the top 4.the only chance talat has is in the odi team as an all rounder.

Fakhar,babar,haider,hafeez,rizwan,khushdil

I don't see Talat as an all rounder. I see him as a specialist batsmen. Hafeez doesn't need to play ODIs so Talat can bat at 4 or 5.

Hes not thier for the odis I dont think hes thier for the t20s.i think hes played in the t20s for Pakistan he did ok but never won them a game so they dropped him.

The team I mentioned was for the t20s the odi team am not sure what line up they will play as imaam and fakhar and abid are thier for odis oppening slot so that leaves abdullah Harris haider babar rizwan for the positions of 3-5 with khusdhil batting at 6 so not sure were hussain fits or gets in the squad

Lol. Usually in Pakistan it's the other way round! Work hard to get your foot in the door and then relax once you're in. To establish yourself just make friends with the right people and moan loudly in the media if you're ever not selected.

Hard work and talent, who needs it? Shafiq, Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Shoaib Malik etc. certainly don't. They've got caps that far better cricketers in other countries could only dream of.

He did okay in the national cup with some good performance but personally i think he has to develop his bowling he wont be able to get in any squad based on just his batting he has less compition as all rounders only fahim and ammad butt or maybe yamin

Abdullah Shafique speaking to the media today:

"This journey to play domestic cricket and then get selected for the Pakistan squad has been great; The National T20 Cup was my first big tournament and I feel I performed really well in it, scoring 102 in one of the game; This was a learning experience for me as the Central Punjab side had some good players in it and I learnt a lot from them during the tournament"

"I am very excited that I have been names for the Pakistan side and I will try and put in my best efforts"

"Pakistan team's current top order is very strong but I will try to do my best - my 100% - whenever I am given the chance"

"My inspiration is Ricky Ponting - I admire him a lot and try to play like him; I really like his pull shot and his high backlift; From the Pakistan team, I am a fan of Babar Azam and during this preperation camp, I will try and learn from him and improve my game as much as I can"

"Having a young captain and vice-captain will be a good inspiration for us - I will do my best to learn from them to improve my game so that I can serve Pakistan"

"I was trying to get into the side but I wasn't expecting to be picked; But I performed well in the National T20 Cup and felt very excited when my name was announced as part of the squad; Any cricketer who starts off hopes that one day he can represent his country; This was also my goal that I could be part of the national cricket team; So I am lucky that I have been picked for the squad and will try and give my 100%"

"There is a lot of support from my family and my father supports and also advises me about how to play etc; He is my first coach and then after that there is my uncle who helps me; My family has a cricket background which really helps me in improving my game"

"My strengths are the cut and pull shots; As I play in the top order, you have to be able to play such shots to do well although, I can also play good cover drives"

"The National T20 Cup was a great platform for young talent to show their skills and we have seen a few emerge during this tournament; We had some debuts in my team also, a few U19 players played in the side also; So this was a good experience for the younger players as they will be able to see what they need to improve"

"I am good friends with some youngsters who had played alongside me in the U19 team; I am getting to know the other seniors including Babar Azam and its going well for me"

Not included in 1st ODI vs Zimbabwe - what's the plan here Misbah/Babar?

I thought he would make the squad. It needs to be explained why he wasn't in the 15 man squad.

Babar Azam in his presser:

"The future of Haider Ali and Abdullah Shafique is very bright and I do like both of these players; Both play with different techniques"

"Abdullah Shafique takes a little time initially but once he is set, he plays his natural game and does his best to dominate the bowlers"

Misbah is using the right tactics

He is slowly building a team, he doesn't want to rush Abdullah Shafique. He will get his chance in the T20 series. Same is the case with Haider Ali.

There are four players in the squad that have yet to play ODI match still people are moaning

Generally speaking I would agree. But this is Zimbabwe. I expect Haider Ali to at least get the third game, and Abdullah is simply not a T20 player.

Abdullah isn't a T20 player.

Yet had a better average than Haider Ali in the National T20?

And was one of the top highest run scorers in his first ever T20 tournament???!!

Really!

I believe Ahson8 means it from a place of good intent similar to myself - we don’t want to ruin him.

Abdullah isn’t a T20 specialist. He takes his time and plays his strokes which is why he finished with a high average, similar to Babar actually. To that end, it’s good to develop him as a backup to Babar in the T20 team for the anchor role.

But the main concern is that Misbah essentially saw his T20 hundred, and is now giving him a T20 debut, and is pigeon holing him into that role when Abdullah is a potential ODI and Test superstar. Instead, Misbah isn’t playing him against Zimbabwe of all sides! So when will he get to play?!

Strike rate also matters in T20 though, Abdullah is a proper batsman and will do well for us in Tests & ODIs InshaAllah

Even Babar in his press conference said the same thing today that "both Haider & Abdullah are really talented, but have different styles - Haider is an aggressive batsman while Abdullah takes his time initially, but both are good talents" and I couldn't agree more.

Babar himself is bit of an anchor, so having him and Abdullah together in T20s is not ideal.

Its zimbabwe not austrlia or india haider should have played and even Abdullah.abdullah is more suited to odis than t20s as for haider hes dynamic let him Express him self against a weaker opposition.if fakhar gets 100 what good is it going to do against Zimbabwe nothing at all.

Of course he has better average as he likes to bat throw similarly to babar who also averages 50 in international haider is a game changer

I think Misbah believes in increamental building of a team. Haider will get an extended run in the T20 cricket.

I think Misbah is a doing a fine, his approach has been best ever adopted by a Pakistan caoch. Misbah will need to believe in the process , not get effected by the media

This is one of the most delusional posts I've read on PP, Misbah has no clue on how to build a team

Lol. What on earth did I just read I hope you are being sarcastic. We are playing Zimbabwe not Australia in their backyard or something. Then again you support that clown rashid latif so never know.

What team is he building when you have the whole team full of cha chas abid ali, haris sohail, itfikhar, sohail khan, imad wasim.

What is the point of playing the oldies against a team ranked 14th I mean misbah is insecure he picked sohail khan malik abid ali Bhatti and so on how is this building a team its really poor they need to be groomed yes but this was a sporty opportunity.can you explain what misbah process is and building of a team ?

Included in the 15 member squad for final ODI vs Zimbabwe - will he get a chance?

He needs to OPEN!!!!!!

He's played 11 innings at professional level so far, and NONE have been as an opener(the position he's batted his entire life)

WORLD CLASS PLAAYAAA!

If Haider opens and he bats in the middle I'm gonna be pretty mad :))

If he plays tomorrow, will be his List A debut too along with ODI debut.

He's got 100s on FC and T20 debut, let's hope he can do it again tomorrow and make it a treble.

Seems to have some talent but I absolutely hate it when someone's international debut is the same as their debut in that format. Why should he be playing ODIs when he's played no professional 50 over matches?

He shouldn't open because we already have Haider Ali for this role. Haider and Zaman should open , would be a treat to watch :D

Don't take my word for it, but rumors are he's moving to a new spot on the bench.

Massive day for the kid.

Because we're desperate

So ? Rashid Khan's ODI and List A debut + T20I and T20 debut was the same game.

So ? Rashid Khan's ODI and List A debut + T20I and T20 debut was the same game.

Sure exceptions can be made for generational talents like Rashid Khan and Wasim Akram. Plus there's Afghanistan not having a reliable domestic structure until a few years back so Rashid's selection was more than justified. Abdullah Shafique seems to be talented but lets not act he is some batting savior for Pakistan

Shafique is like "Meri baaree kab ayegee?"

Still no sign of him in Pak colours.

Wish he was never called up, to be honest. Better to get first class experience than warm the bench for a T20 game. Even if he gets his debut in a later game, not sure it will be worth the tradeoff.

The question needs to be asked to the management ludicrous decision.even babar stated he may not be given a go just for the sake of it I seen it somewere cant remember were thou.the best chance for him was to play in the odis were thiers positions up for grabs. In t20s you cant fit him in unless babar and haider open and abdullah at three
