Full name Saif Badar

Born July 3, 1998, Sialkot

Current age 18 years 355 days

Major teams Pakistan Under-19s

Batting style Right-hand bat

Bowling style Legbreak googly

First interest in cricket

Like all youngsters, my interest in cricket began with playing cricket amongst friends in the back streets of my home in Sialkot. We used tape-ball to play these games and I bowled and batted as I really liked playing the game. My father was also very interested in cricket and he recognised my love for the game at an early age. My mother wasn’t that keen as she was more interested in making sure I studied but in the end, I suppose, my love for the game won the day.

Starting proper cricket at Murray College, Sialkot

Once again, it was my father who pushed me towards playing proper cricket as one day he saw some other parent taking their child to play what looked like proper hard-ball cricket. My father asked where this was and he was told that it was at special training which was given at Murray College. I then bought my first kit and started off at the age of nine at the college under the guidance of a famous local coach, Imtiaz Ahmed who was also known as Mithoo Bhai. The set-up there was like an academy and youngsters were taught the basics of cricket as well as given match practice. I am to this day grateful to Mithoo Bhai for his guidance and in making me the cricketer I am today.

Exposure to Under-16 Cricket

I continued playing local games in Sialkot and also participated in Under-16 trials a few times but I was told that I was too young and I had to wait another year. In one of the talent hunt camps that happened in our area, the famous former Pakistan player and coach Ehteshamuddin also saw me perform and was very impressed and really motivated me. Finally, in December 2012, at the age of 14 I was able to play for Sialkot Under-16 region. In my first year of playing Under-16 cricket, I was not able to perform and impress others. Understandably, tongues began to wag and people started to speak about how I was not suited for cricket. People started to say that I had been playing cricket for last 4-5 years and still had nothing to show for it at the Under-16 level. These comments really bothered me and I used to think about it a lot and used to wonder what I could do to answer these voices. What also did not help my situation was that my school would not give me time off to play Under-16 matches. My father had no option but to withdraw me from the school and from then onwards, I did all my schooling from home which was what fate had in store for me.

Playing District Under-19

Seems that my luck was about to change as I was selected for District Under-19s in May 2014. Until then, I had very weak performances in all of PCB’s tournaments. But I was afforded a chance to play after missing out on the first three games and the reason I was included was because one of the players had to go to take an exam. I grabbed this chance with both hands by scoring 156* in my debut game. This allowed me further opportunities to play in three games in total in which I was able to score 217 runs. However, whilst I seemed to be scoring runs at will, I was still not considered good enough to play for the Regional Under-19 squad.

Moving from Club Cricket to Regional Under-19 level

The disappointment of not being picked for the Regional Under-19 was not an easy one to overcome but I continued working hard at club level. I played for various clubs and due to my good performances at that level, I was finally selected for the Regional Under-19s. In One-Day matches at that level, I played five games in the Inter-Region Under-19 One-Day Tournament in September 2015. My performances in that tournament were brilliant and I am sure I answered some of my critics as well my own self-doubts. I ended up with an average of 63 and a good strike rate of 89 as I scored 253 runs in four innings. By my own standards, my performance in the three-day version of the Inter-Region Under-19 Tournament in October 2015 was not what I had hoped for. Having said that, I still ended up with 321 runs in seven innings with an average of 46.

Selection for camp for Pakistan’s Under-19 tour of Sri Lanka

I was given a unique opportunity to be part of a training camp for the Pakistan Under-19's tour of Sri Lanka in late 2015. This was a camp consisting of 30 players but unfortunately, I was not selected for the main squad but included as part of the reserves. During this camp I had the amazing experience of being praised by former Pakistan cricketer Ijaz Ahmed. He really appreciated my batting and gave me a lot of encouragement. His words were to prove a great motivation for me in my future.

Tri-series in Dubai in 2016 with Australia and New Zealand

I was selected for this series which was held just before the Under-19 World Cup and did not perform very well in the first 2 games, scoring just 5 and 19. However, I was motivated by our coach and in the game against Australia I scored 53 runs. I then scored 99* against New Zealand after coming-in at number 6 in the last match of the series. We won the Tri-series and those performances will always be very special to me.

Success at the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh

This was one of the proudest moments of my career as I was the second-highest scorer for Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup in 2016. All in all I scored 258 runs in six matches with two fifties to my name. All my hard-work from the previous years and advice of the likes of Ijaz Ahmed seemed to be having an effect as I had scores of 44 against Canada, 88 against Nepal and in the 5th place play-off against England, I remained not out on 75.

List A Debut for Punjab in 2016

I was picked in the emerging players category to represent the Punjab squad for the Pakistan Cup in 2016. It was indeed an honour to play alongside my childhood hero and role model Shoaib Malik who also of course comes from Sialkot. This was my dream to play alongside Shoaib and I was very pleased that my dream came true. What was amazing was that Shoaib also became my mentor and gave me advice during the tournament and also continued giving me tips after the end of the Pakistan Cup. This was an exciting time for me and although I did not perform to my own satisfaction, scoring just 53 runs in five games, I learnt a lot from this experience and I am sure this will help me a lot in my future.

Developing as a batting all-rounder

I started to bowl leg-breaks during the Under-19 days and also bowled a few overs during the Under-19 World Cup, picking up a wicket against Afghanistan. During the Pakistan Cup, Shoaib Malik told me to be prepared to bowl as well but to be honest, my main emphasis was on batting alone. However, I was lucky that I was named for the two-week all-rounders camp at the NCA in May of this year. I was part of a list of 15 players chosen for this camp and fortunate that Mushtaq Ahmed spent some time with me to help me refine my bowling skills. He guided me by helping me understand what I was doing wrong and also provided me help to fix my issues. This gave me more focus and confidence on this side of my game.

Association with Lahore Qalandars

I have had a great association with the PSL side Lahore Qalandars. I was part of the Lahore Qalandars’ Jazz Rising Stars team that went to Sydney in November 2016 ahead of the main PSL tournament in early 2017. That was a great experience for any youngster and I really enjoyed the opportunity to play against quality opposition in Australia. I have to thank the management of Lahore Qalandars and also Aaqib Javed for their role in encouraging us youngsters. So, players like Usman Qadir, Mohammad Irfan Jnr and myself were associated with the full Lahore Qalandars squad during the PSL which was an amazing experience for all of us. I did not get to play any games for the Qalandars during the 2017 PSL but I am really hopeful that I will get an opportunity next year.

Areas of improvement in the future

Whilst I have done well in the One-Day and Twenty20 format, I have not been able to perform that well in the longer formats of the game since my Under-19 days. So that is an area which I need to improve upon if I am to play First-class cricket which requires one to play longer innings and get to bigger scores. I am lucky that I have great advice given to me on this aspect of my cricket at the NCA by Mudassar Nazar who told me that the only way to become a good cricketer is to develop the ability to play longer innings. In addition, the likes of Lahore Qalandars coach Paddy Upton and our captain Brendon McCullum also gave me tips on technical issues with my batting and that is what I intend to improve upon in the upcoming months. Once again, being part of the PSL has really helped me learn a lot as even though I didn’t play a game, just sharing the dressing room with such big names has really made me a better cricketer overall.

He is a proper stylish batsman but Aaquib Javed shahab is moulding him into a late order finisher which is curbing his development... Last I say him was for the LQ development squad in UAE where he couldn't buy a run. Badar is really good but he needs the right guidance to prosper.

InshaAllah, he will join Haris and Babar in the middle in three years time. Pakistan's next great batting prospect.

Seems like a good prospect need to be nurtured carefully, and hopefully he can make the national side in a few years. Best of luck.

He is a player which I am really looking forward to.To me he is a player which Pakistan badly needs in the middle/lower middle order. He has got a game which is suited to modern day cricket and can be developed into a very fine batting all-rounder.He can bowl as well which is an added bonus. And to top it off he is a very good fielder as well.

The area of improvement for him,as he has confessed himself,is that he needs to go big when set.He often throws it away after getting in.But he is going to get better by playing more matches. The more matches he plays he will get better and better.

My advice to Saif Badar will be to keep working hard on your batting as well as bowling because you can be a very fine all-rounder.You have got every shot in the book and can tear away any type of bowling by playing proper cricketing shots,so don't ever try to become another blind slogger who plays every shot towards mid wicket and long on ala U Akmal.

This season is very important for him to get selected for Pakistan A next year. Hopefully he shows good growth, seen many U19 cricketers show potential then fade away.

Very much hope he fulfils his potential- he needs to remain motivated. Coaching will also be key.

I was disappointed LQ did not give him a game in the PSL- hopefully he is given a few opportunities next season.

Looked million dollars in only match he played that too batting at #8 or #9, Thanks to Sindh and Anwar Ali group for not giving proper chance to youngster.

is he selected for any PSL team?? looks good prospect with good muscles and body in shape.. he was running twos every time the ball went past 30yard circle. how is his fielding as well?

Last year he was selected by Lahore Qalandars through their PDP.He was sent to Australia with LQ Developmental squad to play in a tri series with sydney thunders and sydney sixers developmental squads. He was then selected in the main team of LQ in PSL but unfortunately didn't get a game.

He is a very good fielder.Infact the players who have come from the U19 cricket of late are terrific fielders-Shadab,Hassan,Saif,Sameen to name a few which is a very welcome change.

yes its good to know.. I cant believe Mc Callum didnt give him a chance. hopefully he should get few games this time around.

Saif badar birthday yesterday turned 19

He's been spotted in several LQ training pictures recently, hopefully he gets some game-time during the 2018 PSL.

From memory, he was one of their supplementary players last year but didn't get a game (even though one of their games was a dead rubber). Like you I very much hope he is given a chance in the next PSL, although I am not sure t20 is his best format.

He shares same birthday with a great cricketer - Sir Richard Hadlee.

Actually few more - Hadlee's new ball partner Chatfield, Harbhajan, Charles Bannerman .... and a PAK cricketer who can be his idol - Wasim Raja.

Not impressed with this guy.
I think Asif Ali is the one to look up to for power hitting at 6,7 in white ball cricket

Saif Badar scored 86 of 69 balls, Fast an impactful innings by him helped his team to win the match.

Is this the season he finally pushes on? Let's hope so.

On a side note, his batting has always reminded me of Shoaib Malik. Let's just hope he plays pace and bounce better :P.

Saif Badar finished with the figures of 58* of 29 balls and helped his team to chase a mammoth total of 335.

Is he the finisher Pakistan needs?

Makes me so happy he has finally pushed on in domestic cricket and is now doing justice to his ability. Those two shots off Afridi in the PSL seem to have done him the world of good.

As I have repeatedly said, he has been completely mistreated by LQ and MS and I sincerely hope whoever he plays for in next year's PSL actually gives him a proper chance to perform.

Also, playing him as a finisher would be a waste. He should play in the middle order and can launch if the situation requires it.

Again i am saying, this guy is special. Once in a generation talent and a ready made batsman (only has a little temperament issues). Iska kuch karo yaar. Bring him into the A side at least. DO NOT WASTE HIM.

And no , he is not a finisher. He is a proper batsman who can average very high and play clutch knocks. A number 4 or at the most a number 5 batsman. He can take Malik's place when Malik retires.

His batting style is very Malik-esque, isn't it? Malik is supposed to be something of a mentor to him too, but as I wrote above Malik mistreated him at MS.

He resembles him a lot. Malik is one heck of a mentor.

About mistreating Saif, i guess it was more of a management decision. Malik has groomed a lot of youngsters since his Sialkot stallions days like Haris, bilawal bhatti etc. So i am not sure he would deliberately treat someone unjustly.

True, but Malik was captain and has to take some responsibility. (Maybe he felt threatened by him, who knows).

Also, I hope Saif has a different mentor when it comes to playing pace and bounce!

I think playing pace comes naturally to him. I hope for his sake Malik doesnt teach him about it :)) man, he really is a great talent, one can see it by watching a 5 minute clip of him batting.

Just checked the scorecard. He came in at seven.

His nonchalant reaction afterwards makes the video. :))

It's fair to say the bowler was not impressed.

Butler plays that shot sometimes doesnt he?

I didnt know Saif plays it too. This guy is genuinely good. He is young and can be further moulded into something even more special. It would be a catastrophe if something doesnt become of him in next 2 years.

Correct. In fact Buttler did a masterclass with Rob Key where he talked about these type of ramps shot which Badar should definitely watch.

In essence Buttler was saying for these shots you should not use the wrists as that is harder and needs your timing to be perfect etc. Rather, the best way to do it was stay upright (for mobility) and simply deflect the ball and the pace of the delivery would do the rest.

Like I said earlier, I am so happy to see him putting in performances in domestic cricket this season. I really hoped PSL3 would be his breakthrough year, but one year delay is fine. To think Wasim (MS director of cricket!) said he wasn't impressed by the batting talent in PSL.

Despite the fact that he his coming in lower the order. I still think he can be a solid middle order batsman. Maybe a future No.5 for Pakistan. An aggressive hard hitting No.5 replacing Malik. He shows form in the domestic season and hopefully gets selected for the PSL then he will definitely get a wider ray of attention on him.

Came in at 136-5, scored a 55 ball 68 to get his side to 252.

Another quick inning by Saif Badar, he scored 68 runs of 55 balls today.

Thanks.

Still need to see extended footage of his batting against pace. Hopefully he is not Malik II in that regard.

Hope he gets a bigger chance in PSL. Multan picked but he hardly got a real opportunity batting at 7

Handled Musa with ease. Those drives!! This is why i call him as once in a generation talent (as per Pakistani standards). He can be a Babar Azam with a power game.

Really impressed with him got great potential. He can make it big along with amad butt who was equally impressive.

@Talletspotterpk. What are your thoughts about a him.

He is second most talented U-19 cricketer after Zeeshan Malik.

Needs couple of Fc seasons. Isn't a ready product yet.

Khan look at Salman Butt. He is a fearless Captain with no selfish approach.

Saif Badar for PTV batted at number 7 number 8 with success. Salman has promoted him today to number 4 and uptil now Saif is playing quite well.

Hassan Mohsin, Saif Badar & Umar Akmal are eyeing number 6 spot in Pak Odi team. Umar needs to reduce his weight (10-15 kg) otherwise shouldn't be in contention.

I call him Malik 2.0 +

Plus because unlike Malik he is very good against Pace both of front and backfoot.

Against spinners he is as good as Malik.

Hope he scores in this tournament too. He is a delight to watch.

I hope he does not turn out to be like Malik.Need more from him,But my PTV sports is showing hockey now, dammm.

About time. Still a bit tentative to plant the front foot with confidence. He's reaching for the ball. Not assured of his off stump yet.

Should remain fit as well, like Malik. He looked in better shape during PSL. Here I see he is probably 5 kgs beyond preferred limit.

I thought he would have been a good pick for the PSL. Sometimes it's difficult to predict what the PSL teams are thinking.

Would love MMHS views on Saif Badar.

Need to watch more games at higher level. From the clip, looks a little bit too leg sideish for my liking, but looks like a strong, well built lad; should be better striker of the ball than Asad, Azhar or Babar.

There are few very good young prospects actually in batting department - Badar, Zeeshan, Imran, Umair Yousuf, Saud, Saad. Not sure if they'll get proper chance as long as there is no change in selection committee.

39(23) today in National T20 Cup Final. Singlehandedly helped Model Town team (Lahore Whites) win the match.

Plus Inzimam was in stadium too. Hope this performance at least gets Saif an emerging category contract from one of the PSL franchises.

This season is very important for him. He has to show tangible progess.

Zeeshan, Hasin Mohsin and Saif are the only youngsters to have decent potential for LOIs cricket.

People are not realizing how good this guy is.

I have hyped up only three batsmen so far. Haris, Babar and Saud Shakeel. And i hyped them up when many here had not even heard their name. I talked about Saud when everyone was talking about Sami Aslam. At that time i said Saud is the bigger talent.

Saif is another such talent. He needs to be drafted in the LOI set up ASAP. Special player.

Saif badar has signed for Leyland CC in Preston.

Hope he performs in Pakistan Cup.

Personally it was very exciting for me to see Ahsan Ali get reasonable success in PSL especially his offside play against pacers.

I wanted to see Rizwan Hussain, Saud Shakil & Saif Badar play and succeed but it could not happen.

Saif was unlucky not to be picked by any franchise but He is our Future.

This is what Pakistan cricket is missing. Too many softies in the team. Love the attitude

Hope he backs his words with actual performances. One of the rare batting hopes from Pakistan.
