2nd test century in 6th match only. Well done to him, a good young prospect! :14:

Looks a great prospect for NZ. Can be their main opener for the next 10 years if he keeps his head down.

Macca is not a long term opening prospect. Need someone to pair with Latham. Rutherford seems to have gone Jamshed. Fulton was never good. I suppose we can take a punt with Raval.

He's only 22! A genuine youngster, one who looks like will be our first choice opener for at least the next decade.

looks an organized and temperamentally solid batsman, great find for the Kiwis.

Pakistan don't really have an answer for him at the moment.

Its a delight to see Kiwis producing some talented players.Like the look of him.

He looks well composed and has got a solid temperament.Plays spin with ease.A future prospect surely if maintains his consistency.

Watched him bat a little and he played sweep shots like a subcontinent batsmen. Looks like he has good temperament too. Good find for New Zealand.

Watch out for this guy. He's a genuine talent. He will probably join Warner and Cook soon as one of the best openers in the world.

So organized and excellent technique like Williamson. Plays the ball late and right under his eyes.

Am I the only one that thinks he plays spin better than anyone in NZ?

I remember when he came down to UAE. He played spin so well on that tour I was shocked at just how good and compact he looked.

Fantastic player.

Agree, thats the reason he scored couple of test hundreds in UAE against us couple of years back. But certainly he is not a good ODI batsman. His yesterday 100 was a surprise for me too but minus few innings he is not a good ODI player. only a decent test player.

Tom Latham gunning for New Zealand cricket history against India in Pune

Tom Latham is buoyed by a new role and an unexpected weapon in his batting arsenal as he eyes the possibility of New Zealand creating cricket history in India.

The Black Caps will clinch their first bilateral one-day international series win on Indian soil if victorious in the second match at Pune starting on Wednesday evening (NZT).

Latham's unbeaten century steered the tourists to a six-wicket win in Mumbai on Monday but the 25-year-old is well aware previous New Zealand teams have failed to close the deal on previous tours to India.

Last year they lost the decider in Visakhapatnam to go down 3-2 , mirroring the final scores in 1995 and 1999.

Victory in game two will mean they avoid another potential decider heartbreak in Kanpur on Sunday.

Latham says they have put the opening win out of their system, wary the world No.2 ranked India will be desperate to avoid their first home series defeat to anyone in two years.

"We know how good they are in their own conditions. We saw that last year in the one-day series," he said.

"We will be prepared for what they throw at us, and if we play some good cricket, hopefully we can win the series.

"It's in the back of the mind that it's something that hasn't been done before by a New Zealand team."

Latham is thriving in his role as wicketkeeper-batsmen, having agreed with coach Mike Hesson over the off-season that moving away from his Test role as an opener would best suit the team in ODIs.

He was effectively swapped with promoted opener Colin Munro, giving some ballast to the Black Caps middle order below senior batsmen Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor.

He unleashed a new shot - the reverse sweep - during his New Zealand-record 200-run stand with Taylor (95) in Mumbai.

The left-hander said he had practised the shot a lot but never used it in a game.

Taylor told him it was time to unleash against the spin-heavy Indian attack and he went on to score 35 runs from the sweep and reverse sweep.

"I was lucky I hit the first one. If I didn't, I probably wouldn't have played it again," he said.

"It was nice having someone experienced like that at the other end, sharing his knowledge in terms of what he was thinking.

"It's important to adapt to every surface that we get. If that's something I find easy to play out there, I will be possibly be sweeping."

Changes are unlikely to the New Zealand side, who Latham said aren't getting carried away with their fine all-round performance, led by Trent Boult's sharp work with the new ball.

He is quite a handy batsmen, knows his limits and bats accordingly. Very good in subcontinent.

Played a good inning in WC final as well. It was hard to score against the likes of Archer, Woakes and co in the final overs on that pitch.

Brilliant 251 ball knock comes to an end on 154

The best NZ batsman vs spin playing in their best ever NZ team.

First half century of the Test series for Tom Latham.

50* (70) and playing positively.

New Zealand lead by just 54 in the second innings so he has a lot of work still to do, but this has been a solid and fluent start. He is coming down the wicket to try and nullify the spin.

In their unbeaten 221-run partnership, the duo of Latham and Williamson created several records. Player of the Match Latham broke Nathan Astle's long standing record and became the highest individual scorer for New Zealand against India in ODIs.

Test ton #13 for Tom Latham taking him to the top of the ladder for NZ openers, going past John Wright (12). It's Latham's 3rd Test 100 away to Pakistan (2 in UAE, 2014) & 4th in Asia (Sri Lanka, 2019)

Pretty low key innings but got to his 50 in the 2nd ODI - 53*(62)

Captain leading from the front to get his 20th half century today in the 4th ODI - 50* (67b)

Tom Latham burned two reviews, one on Kohli's inside edge and the other on Iyer's catch.
Very poor judgment behind the stumps.

New Zealand's senior players must step up in Williamson's absence: Latham

New Zealand's senior players must step up to compensate for the loss of Kane Williamson when the former skipper opts out of part of the home summer, batsman Tom Latham said.

Latham spoke to reporters on Wednesday as New Zealand Cricket released its summer schedule, which starts with a three-test series against England in November before white-ball series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Williamson gave up the white-ball captaincy after New Zealand crashed out of the T20 World Cup group phase. He plans to spend January playing T20 franchise cricket in South Africa rather than representing the Black Caps as he would usually do.

Latham, Williamson's long-serving deputy, said he felt a greater responsibility to step up and lead.

"I think we've seen over many years now at times we haven't had those senior guys whether they're playing in the IPL or having a rest," said the 32-year-old.

"From my point of view it gives me an opportunity as a senior player to step up and lead as well. But also other guys that haven't necessarily had those opportunities in the past to step up as well in different leadership roles.

"It's never great when you miss guys of Kane's calibre but it gives opportunities to other guys to put their best foot forward."

Though often filling in as skipper, Latham missed out on the full-time test captaincy when Williamson stepped down, the role going to fast bowler Tim Southee instead.

New Zealand have yet to decide on a replacement for Williamson for the white-ball roles but Latham's record in T20s may count against him if selectors opt for a single captain for both the short-format teams.

Latham was not in New Zealand's T20 World Cup squad and his last T20I was over a year ago.

The three-match series against England, which starts in Christchurch on Nov. 28, will be the only test cricket played in New Zealand in the home summer amid concerns the longest format is being suffocated by the growing number of global T20 leagues.

Latham, who has played 80 tests, said players could only try to adapt to the changing landscape.

"There's no test franchise stuff. So if that comes out, that'd be great," he joked.

"But yeah, I think cricket nowadays you've got to be so flexible with the skill-set that you have."

Latham has been appointed the new Test captain of the New Zeland team after Southee resigned.

India tour is coming. It will be a great challenge for him to be competitive against India at their home.

He’s a good guy and did well in Bharat I think. Wishing him the best.

New Zealand Test captain said in a short video posted by New Zealand Cricket:

“It’s obviously a special feeling to be named full-time captain. It’s massive honour and a huge privilege. I think in the past, it’s always been a little bit of a caretaker role…But I guess, it’s a different situation where I would be able to put a little bit of my own spin on things and what that looks like.”

“I am not 100 per cent sure yet but hopefully we will see where it does look a little bit different. As a Test team, in the past, we have a done huge amount of good things. We have been successful playing a brand of cricket that is true to us as Kiwis.”

“It’s obviously a great group, a bunch of leaders, a bunch of older guys, and also some amazing talent coming through. So it’s certainly an exciting time and yeah, it will be a great challenge.”

Tom Latham scored his 31st Test fifty on Day 1 of the 3rd Test against England. With 13 Test centuries to his name, he has now surpassed Brendon McCullum for the most 50+ scores by a Kiwi batter.

Tom Latham's 55(76) contributed to New Zealand's effort against Bangladesh in their group-stage encounter of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

This is how their system works they have made him a match-winning batter.
