Najam Sethi speaking on the Umar Akmal issue

"I know Umar Akmal well. When I went into PCB initially, the first problem I faced that I had to take a tough decision on was Umar Akmal.

"We found out that there were medical reports about him that had been hidden, we found them with great difficulty. We found out that he has epileptic fits.

"This happened to him during a tour, but the team tried to hide it and let him play.

"Think about if he is playing and has an epileptic fit and what will happen.

"That's in the PCB's records, doctor's reports. It was during a tour of WI or SA when the doctors reported this.

"When he came back, I told him that why don't you get treatment for this? He resisted it a lot and said no, but I said it's there in the report. He refused to accept it, sometimes he accepted it and said forgive me.

"Forgive him for what? It's a medical problem that requires treatment. And until you get that treatment, please stay a little away from cricket.

"You're playing Test cricket at such a major role, you open sometimes and the team depends on you. If there is this type of instability, we should take action.

"He refused to listen. I told him to stop playing for a couple of months and rest and wait for the next report from the doctor after which I would re-evaluate.

"Throughout this time, selectors knew about this. Once they had the information, I wouldn't intervene and left it up to them. They had to take the decision and they were responsible for the rest.

"From time to time, he would get selected. Throughout, he has had problems. Big people spoke to him, Haroon Rasheed, Subhan, myself, coaches, everyone.

"Every 2-3 months he would get into a controversy or some issue. He wouldn't accept it and always say that didn't happen. He would make noise in the media about it.

"Umar Akmal has a psychological and medical problem due to which all this happens, there is no doubt about it.

"He has been approached before as well and we warned him. We banned him a couple of times for 3-6 months but he never understood.

"In the media some people say he is talented etc. and keep a light hand on him but this was to happen, this 3 year ban.

"Umar is not there mentally, he doesn't believe in discipline. He is a very talented kid.

"If he sits with a psychiatrist or gets some medical treatment, he can become discipline oriented.

"But he doesn't believe in discipline, he's an individualist and plays for himself, not for the team. But he is brilliant and that causes problems for the selectors.

"When he's in form, he's unbeatable, one of the most talented cricketers we have ever produced. He plays instintively, not with his mind unfortunately.

"I'm afraid he was approached a couple of times and didn't inform anyone.

"I had made very strict rules in our admin, for people being approached. Before, there used to be approaches and no one bothered, there were no rules. We made rules and implemented them and gave penalties to Irfan, etc.

"The people who were approached informed us and they were in our good books. But there were some who didn't inform us and we would find out and then sanction them.

"This 3 year ban is right, ICC and PCB and other boards are becoming tough about these measures and we have to comply with international best measures.

"Umar's career is threatened now. If there's some review we'll see but he's completely incorrigible, he doesn't listen and he has a mental problem as well as physical which is why he has epileptic fits, etc.

"There is a rule that if there is a small crime and you accept it and everything happens according to proceedings, your sentence will be lessened. And it's stated that if you serve it then you can come back on merit.

"This was the situation with Amir, he served his sentence and then came back on the basis of performance. He helped ICC a lot and did everything he was required to.

"He had the right to come back which he did on form.

"Two others, Asif and Salman Butt, they didn't accept it. They kept denying it despite their evidence. Thus, their punishment didn't finish and till today, there are questions about them. They can play domestic cricket but they aren't selected because when you go overseas, you need visas and if their visa is applied for, then it might be rejected.

"Sharjeel has served his sentence and he'll be able to play. He didn't completely accept his guilt but he has served his punishment. He actually did fixing and we have evidence.

"Irfan accepted he had been approached so he served a small ban.

"We set these rules to protect PSL and Pakistan cricket. If you read the old reports then there are no big names in the past of Pakistan cricketer who didn't do something. But now in this era, this stuff isn't tolerated at all and we take a very hard line on it.

"I think Umar Akmal's career is finished now. 3 years, if his ban is for that long, he will have become older and that instinctive eye for the game will also reduce. So I think this is the end of the line for him."

Sounds more and more like umar akmal was entrapped

Either that or someone took advantage of his past with bookies

It must take something for an ex PCB chairman to claim that you have mental and psychological issues in public

others have said that too.

and its very easy to see

There we go...what we all knew off has been confirmed. I feel bad for junior after finding out that he actually is mentally unstable. Explains his rash behavior. But on another note....does Sethi have no respect for a person's medical privacy? I don’t think it was necessary to disclose what he was suffering with. That too after he was privy to all details about his condition. Pakistanis have no respect for any individuals privacy. It’s pathetic.

Lol, I wonder if Umar Akmal has grounds to sue Sethi here. His life has become a circuis

He's a Pakistani journalist and than their lot complains about criticism

What’s Sethi on about? When did Umar ever open for Pakistan early on in his career?

Sethi the clown.

First he cost the PCB millions of $ for suing BCCI.

And now he's going public disclosing extremely private medical history of one of his ex subordinates

Probably his loyal officials at the PCB are going after Umar Akmal, there's a lot of hate it appears for him.

This is really sad..
So Umar is suffering from medical issues of a serious nature. Wish the guy well.

I am sure he must be taking medication for it. It probably explains his massive weight gain in the last 5 years. Even Johnty Rhodes suffered from epileptic problems

Sethi - one of the biggest clowns of Pakistan tv.

Why expose Akmal’s medical history?

This is criminal behaviour by Sethi, disclosing a person’s confidential medical history.

But anyway, Sethi is responsible for the most appalling Miscarriage of Justice in PCB history.

The Sharjeel Khan Tribunal Report documented that they convicted him in the absence of any evidence, because their boss Najam Sethi had told them to.

It’s all covered in this thread:

http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/s...he-PCB-evidence-which-convicted-Sharjeel-Khan

This was sad. Highly unprofessional and insensitive from Sethi to disclose these things in public like that.

More sympathy now with ar than ever before. One of the biggest talents ever to emerge from Pakistan but health issues stagnated his growth and now we get to know he was always dealing with an unprofessional management which made things worse for him.

Umar Akmal should consult a good professional lawyer to sue Sethi now.

Just avoid going to Rizvi and Rizwi. Rest are all fine bro.

Imagine the situation of Umar Akmal now looking backwards. The guy had a dream to play for Pakistan despite a medical condition he made it and then he has to deal with a management like this which couldn't guide him professionally. The kind of language Sethi is using in his interview is everything that is wrong with desi people when it comes to dealing with medial issues we do not understand..

This makes total sense. I always had a feeling that mentally Umar Akmal wasn't all there. What a shame.

From disclosing Shoaib's warts to this, PCB and its ex officials have an alarming history of not respecting patient confidentiality

I have no idea what the equivalent of a UK based employment tribunal is in Pakistan but legal teams would have a field day with the Sethi statement that could even lead to compensation or dare I say, being reinstated.

In my view, a public statement around Umar Akmal is relevant as it’s in the public interest but it has gone too personal about his character and medical records. A legal team could argue that any legal process was predetermined / biased?

If this was the case, there is no way he should have played any cricket and Sethi should have done everything to ensure he got medical advice.

Jonty reached out to him 2013 to support him after CPL

"Irfan accepted he had been approached so he served a small ban

I'm guessing Junaids has a lot to say on this drivel by Sethi.

If you put Junaids and Sethi in a room, Sethi would come out as a complete embarrassment.

Lol Pakistani Cricket is always entertaining even in global lockdown, if only there was a way to monetize all this, getting a broadcaster on board, selling them rights b to all the off field stuff

If this was the case, there is no way he should have played any cricket and Sethi should have done everything to ensure he got medical advice.

PCB should have put their foot down but what I told bizzare is Umar Akmals family even cognizant of this fact and have they even ensured he got medical treatment for this problem? I wonder if the medication that UA has been taking to deal with this problem has contributed to his massive weight gain in the last 5-6 years and his mood swings, temper problems

It is quite possible Umar has some type of problem. He seems anxious always. It could be social anxiety.

If this was the case, there is no way he should have played any cricket and Sethi should have done everything to ensure he got medical advice.

Jonty Rhodes and Tony Greig both had long and illustrious careers with epilepsy.

The issue here is slightly different.

It was in the public domain that Umar Akmal had had one seizure, on an aircraft flying to a CPL match in 2013. But that is not that unusual and is not diagnostic of epilepsy: in fact a very high percentage of people of Pakistani origin are vulnerable to seizures due to inbreeding as a result of cultural norms which make cousin marriage acceptable.

But Sethi went much much further on Wednesday: he actually stated not that Umar Akmal has had one seizure, but that he has had multiple seizures and been diagnosed with epilepsy.

This could explain a number of things, including:

1. Whether his weight gain is due to anti-convulsant medication due to the previous generation treatment widely used in Pakistan (carbamazepine, sodium valproate etc). A western sportsman with epilepsy would probably take more modern medication such as lamotrigine (which is weight-neutral) or topiramate (which reduces weight).

2. Whether he has a low IQ for the same reasons that he has epilepsy. Again, this would mean that normal disciplinary treatment would not work, because he is essentially a slow learner. Such people can be great at sport - think of Paul Gascoigne - but generally require specially-tailored treatment including use of "minders".

If Sethi is correct, Umar Akmal has been a victim of a primitive medical system and failure of the PCB to understand its duty of care.

Thanks Junaid, these were my concerns as well. Umar Akmal when he first started his career and in the early part of his career from 2009 to early 2015 used to be in shape and aesthetically decent looking, he was one of the most reliable fielders in the team. He then got married in 2015 at the age of 23-24 and since then he has been showing shocking weight gain and declining fitness to the point where its affected his batting, fielding.

Even when he has worked out extremely hard in a bid to make a comeback behind the scenes, his weight loss has been very marginal. I suspect his weight gain could be a combination of his declining metabolism as he is getting older, maybe his wife is an excellent cook but most importantly it could be a side effect of any medication he could be taking for his epilepsy. The side effect of this medication could perhaps make him prone to emotional difficulties and make him more irritable. Somethings to ponder over.

Failure of PCB. They couldn't manage one talented players what a waste. All responsible should never be appointed in PCB again. Who knows it was orchestrated or it was for real. I have always strongly believed fixing charges against asif amir butt were very well planned by overseas anti pak syndicate...its a shame our boys fell for the trap and incompetent PCB. In Umar's case truth will eventually come out but in either case PCB couldn't take care of the talent.

Sethi has done nothing more than expose his own unprofessional behavior. Releasing someone's confidential medical reports should tantamount to some serious legal action.

I wonder how his career would have gone had Umar been Australian.

such thoughts lead to melancholy and it is advisable to avoid them...

Well, looking at it from both sides, how the Board would have tried to get the best out of him and how the player would have known from the start that he can't mess around.

First step for redemption, he should consider disowning his family, they have just abbetted and reinforced his victimizations all these years rather than take genuine responsibility for all his issues and problems.

Family should disown him. Imagine being Daddy Akmal and having your children soil your name for 200 million Pakistanis.

One is the worst keeper of all time and another is an aggravated man child

I sometimes feel bad for the Akmal brothers.

Don’t know why :kakmal

Sadly these kinds of videos have become a new trean in pakistan amingest youngsters.

Umar bhai is a true lahori, cant blame him

What I want to know is how many times did Umar Akmal have to rehearse this before he got to the perfect clip? :))

Maybe this "normal behaviour" for Misbah fans like yourself and Major

Go and download tiktok and browse it for 5 minutes. What has this got to do with Misbah, major or me? This is just simply a regression of the Pakistani society and norms.

Umar Akmal could be rubbish, but he’d still walk into the current Pakistan team. Surely he can’t be worse than Asif Ali

Not really his fan but this is so petty and unprofessional from Najam Sethi to reveal it in public. Desi society are already so judgemental about medical conditions, why would you make him a target of bullying. Maybe, this is by he hid his condition from the team management.

He should have played a lot more than he has. But there is only one person to blame for that and we all know who that is.

If he had better discipline this guy could have played several hundred matches for Pakistan by now.

He did back in 2019, got two ducks in a row and was swiftly kicked out of the team.

He doesn't belong anywhere near this team.

The post highlights the possibility that this player could have had a learning disability and belongs to a protected class, so it is a bit harsh to have the same disciplining bar. If this report is true, then the player deserved special care and attention to accommodate the person’s unique mental ability and learning modes, and because it didn’t happen PCB essentially failed at their duty of care for all individuals.
I feel bad for this guy because due to lack of awareness, many people specially in Pakistan don’t understand nor acknowledge mental disabilities

Agree to an extent. Other players in other countries have gotten away with a lot worse . He has himself to blame but I don't think he has been handled well either or given consistent chances when he deserved them . Still better than Asif Ali and a lot of others that are playing currently.

Asif ali is a very low bar Is that the standard we are going to judge players merits to now?

Listen its simple he needs to stay away from controversies n let his bat do the talking

The problem with him is his off field activities talk louder than his on field Always have and always will

The guy has sociopathic tendencies where no matter how much hot water he is in, there is no acknowledgement or understanding of how to behave off the field

lol he is just dumb not really a sociapath. Sociapaths are extremely manipulative, lack empathy and selfish. He is just dumb. A cousin of mine is also like him. He is a harmless fellow. Umar is not made to survive hard rough stressfull environments like international cricket. Lets cut him some slack. His international career is over anyway. Its not like his replacements Asif Ali etc have set the world on fire.

Horrible background sound. It's like a kids toy gone out of control 😀

Being an ahole is choice not a psychological issue..outside his issues with management he has been slapped for harassing an actress and fought with a police sergeant...there are many ppl like him in Pakistani society who have made some money and they feel like they can treat others as ****...he has never shown remorse or looked to redeem himself..I hope he never wears national colors..

Just a reminder.

Everyone said that Umar Akmal needed to prove himself in red ball First Class cricket.

He was Man of the Match in the last two QEA First Class Finals, in which he scored:

113 and 52
218

Mock his shape or his stupidity. But he is Pakistan’s second best batsman after his cousin Babar Azam. That is an undeniable fact.

What about the tons of batsmen that averaged more than him in those 2 tournaments? Also he didn't play in the last tournament.

Shape and stupidity are part and parcel of a sports person. Pakistanis do not think it is, hence we are lacking miles behind others.

He needs maturity. Perhaps it will come with age, though it may not as well.
