"We'll try our best to finish on a high by winning tomorrow's match"

"Both teams look strong so hopefully we'll do well"

"316 runs is a big margin, which you can only make up if you bat first and score 500-600, I don't know what is the reason behind this but I can't do anything"

"We came here to win all the matches"

"We'll try our best to qualify but we need to be realistic. If you need to make 600 runs, or if you make 400, it's not easy to dismiss the other team for 50. We have to make 500-550 and win by 316 runs. If we're realistic, we'll try to win the match and finish on a high note. If Allah has written something for us then something may happen, the other team can get out and we will obviously try to make 500 runs. But the tournament has seen scores of 280-300 mostly"

"We haven't seen the pitch, we will play our best possible team"

"There is disappointment because we made a comeback, now it's not in our hands. We were expecting that maybe the margins could be smaller but when we saw the figures then we were disappointed. But the boys are still motivated and will go into the ground with good preparation"

"If you look at the pitches for the recent matches, it wasn't easy to play open cricket, the ball was turning and gripping so it wasn't easy. What's happened has happened but we will put our full effort tomorrow"

"You can say that we were unlucky. In the West Indies match we didn't turn up and got out for very few runs which impacted our NRR"

"I think things have improved quite a bit, we have beaten good teams, two semi-finalists. In the beginning we weren't playing good cricket, but the way we came back, I don't think any other team did that"

"The most important match was the Australia match where our position was good, if we had won that our position could have been better. That match was the turning point, things were in our hands till then"

"In the beginning you can say that the batsmen didn't make big runs. Overall as a batting unit we didn't make big runs but everyone contributed and played their part. Hafeez bhai unluckily got out to part-timers, he tried but I think towards the end the batsmen contributed. We should have made more centuries from the top order"

"After the World Cup there's a 2-2.5 month gap, PCB will look into how to make things better and the managers and coaches will give their reports, PCB will do whatever is best for Pakistan cricket"

"PCB will decide about captaincy and coaches, my wish will remain in my heart"

"My performances have been so and so, I didn't perform extraordinarily. I tried to contribute wherever my team needed me"

"All the boys tried to perform for Pakistan, sometimes you try but you can't perform. Overall as a team we performed well. Fakhar made runs but he couldn't play big innings. He did give us good starts like in the SA match where we needed a partnership, he contributed against England also. Hasan Ali is a great team player and gives his effort, performance is a matter of luck but your effort should show. Both Fakhar and Hasan showed a lot of effort"

"Babar Azam performed well in his first World Cup, the way he responded was brilliant. Shaheen Shah Afridi performed well, Amir bowled really well, Wahab Riaz made a good comeback and Shadab bowled well. The boys put in some good performances which will be good for Pakistan in the near future"

Title is misleading. Doesn't seem like he believes for even an iota of second that we can score 500 lol

I appreciate the fighting spirit but I hope if they are targeting 500 (the moon) atleast they reach somewhere in the middle to around 350 odd rather than going completely towards the core of the earth 100 all out.

Problem is statement doesn't mean a thing if Bangla win toss and ask to bat first.

Thats what i want to hear. Come on boys! Their desire to win regardless of what happens makes me excited for tomorrows match! :)

Target should be 600 runs. Bangladesh does not have a pace attack barring Mustafiz to speak off and they are mostly spin oriented. All dependends on the pitch and if the ball is coming on to the bat and not spinning.

Gosh! it’s one thing planning to do and another thing saying it in public. What if BD wins the toss and declares after making one run. LOL

What if Pak wins toss and gets out at 105!

Not saying that Sarfaraz should not think of 500 but why say it when there’s 0.0001% chance.

Refreshing to hear the team not giving up yet.

The passengers in the team have cost them the SF spot otherwise they were a decent unit this WC.

trying to score too many runs will only lead to a rapid Batting collapse. Why not play for pride

Well you can't get more cornered than this. Time for an epic cornered tigers masterpiece.

Winning is the only thing on Pakistan captain Sarfaraz’s mind

Sarfaraz Ahmed isn’t focused on the mathematics ahead of Pakistan’s final ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup match - he just wants to win.

Sarfaraz’s side can still mathematically overtake New Zealand to earn the fourth and final place in next week’s semi-finals.

But England’s win over the Black Caps in Durham made that job much harder - with a huge record score needed followed by bowling Bangladesh out in double-quick team.

“We’re just interested in finishing the tournament on a high note and doing our best against Bangladesh,” said Sarfaraz.

This is only the second meeting between these sides in World Cup history - 20 years on from their first encounter.

On that day in Northampton, Bangladesh, who were playing at the tournament for the first time, pulled off a massive shock as Khaled Mahmud’s bowling secured a 62-run victory.

After that game Pakistan went on a 25-match winning streak, lasting 15 years, against their Asian rivals. However, Bangladesh have won their four encounters heading into the latest showdown at Lord’s.

“Yes we’ve lost our last four matches but this is a World Cup match,” added Sarfaraz.

“Both teams are looking stronger than the last time we played, so hopefully we will do well as a team.”

Bangladesh are making their ODI debut at Lord’s but Pakistan have a proud record at the ‘Home of Cricket’ - winning three of their last four matches at the ground, including a 49-run triumph over South Africa earlier in the tournament.

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur urged his top order to go big - admitting some frustration that Babar Azam’s 101 against New Zealand is their only century this tournament.

“They are getting in and scoring but we’d like them to push on a little bit because once your top order gets in, it’s so important to go on and get a century,” he said. “Those guys need to push on because a big score is just around the corner.”

Arthur admits an opening match defeat by the West Indies at Trent Bridge remains his biggest regret, in addition to letting a strong position slip against Australia at Taunton.

“We got ourselves into a position to win against Australia and didn’t and against India we were outplayed but since then we’ve played very, very good cricket,” he said.

“If we had to go back the thing that really haunts me is the loss to the West Indies, it was a game right at the start of the tournament where we should have come in firing and we didn’t.”

July - Lord's - Pakistan Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed pre-match press conference

Q. Captain, obviously, it doesn't have much consequences in this outing, but I'm sure you'd like to finish on a high.
SARFARAZ AHMED: Definitely, we're interested in finishing on a high note. So we will try our best in tomorrow's match.

Q. Pakistan have beaten Bangladesh last time in 2014 Asia Cup. Four matches you have played, and the winning team is Bangladesh. Do those stats create any kind of pressure, or how do you see these stats?
SARFARAZ AHMED: I think, if you talk about the previous matches, yes, Pakistan lost four matches, but it is a World Cup match. So both teams look stronger, so hopefully we will do well as a team.

Q. Sarfaraz, just wondering, obviously, there have been things decided about who goes into the Final Four. Wins comes into it. Net run rate comes into it. Do you think there could be a better way to actually decide that in the future?
SARFARAZ AHMED: Yeah, it is very difficult. 316 runs is a big margin. Only if you're batting first, if you score 600 runs or 500 runs. So I don't know what the study is behind this, but I can't do anything.

To my bangla bros and sisters, we are not being disrespectful to your team, which has played fantastic in this wc!
We are just saying to pak to go for it, if we get to bat first, we may get all out for 80, but we want pak to try!
No disrespect intended!

If they just keep it simple 1 boundary and 4 singles 1 dot ball for good ball per over, then you are essentially taking risk on one ball per over that too if there isnt a lose ball in that over.

Another way to look at it is we have scored around 200 few times in t20. Play like two t20 games give some respect to fizz and play him out for 50 rest of 40 overs get 350.

Ok. Then there is a small matter of dismissing Bangladesh for 80. Easy peasy

:)))

The quality of some of those questions. These are the days when players really earn the money they're paid.

and pakistan letting malik play ahead of fakhar zaman and hasan ali also playing tomorrow.

Pakistan have already given up.

He said they will TRY. Because thats their only chance. Why do you have a problem with it?

He wont try as his personal batting has been pathetic for a few years now.

The openers will have a go and as soon as a wicket falls, everyone will start to play for themselves, hoping a good performance keeps them in the squad for the next series. Typical Pakistan players mentality.

Whatever ! Let's get to 200 first before thinking of 500.

You should go out and stand for your words, and if that means losing in the effort to qualify for the World Cup semi finals, then so be it — don’t play 50 overs , bat like you would in two T20s and a 10 over innings. What’s the worst than can happen that hasn’t already happened?

Expecting Sarfraz to walk out wearing a tiger T-shirt for the toss..

Bangladesh is in terrific form. It will be very difficult to end on a high note for Pak.

Very well said by Sarfaraz Ahmed, talking like a captain of Pakistan as our PM legend says you only lose when you give up.

it important they play people who really can like Asif Ali not Imam. If Imam plays tomorrow then it would be just empty words and reason for his and Arthur's downfall. Its virtually their last act they need to show Pakistan that they're intent was sincere.

Toss is not in his hand, effort is.

Not impossible but very unlikely. Even if we're virtually out of the tournament, let's hope we end this tournament on a good note.

Been saying it all along, I back Bangladesh to defeat Pakistan. Batting first or second.

Been saying it all along, I back Bangladesh to defeat Pakistan. Batting first or second.

If Pak goes all guns blazing and lose wickets early Bangladesh could very well win. IT's not a normal match, so if Bangladesh win it will be due to Pakistan risking it all.

Bangladesh should play Pakistan in a full 5 match bilateral series if they feel they are the better team.

With all the dodgy wickets in this world cups don’t be surprised if its a green top wckt tomorrow.. good luck scoring 650

Lets target 700 instead I think that is the safer plan.

Sarfraz will end up in politics.

????

Depends on what you think a high note. If we win, no matter how close, that's a high note for me. BD are not a minnow side anymore.

My salute to this great nation. The only nation who would stay hopeful and go for a fight even in this situation.

This is why i will always remain a lover of Pakistan cricket and a proud Cornered Tiger for life

His statement was a balanced one, he said " we will aim high even 500, but we have to be realistic and BD is a good team" , nothing wrong with that.

First of all, this post has a clickbait title. Sarfaraz is constantly saying that we have to be "realistic", and the main priority is to win, that's all. He is indecisive and always gives both answers to every hard question, but the meaning is absolutely opposite to the post title. He is NOT trying to score 500, he is only trying to win and "end on a high note". He is not even trying for that, "If it happens it happens" - which means it is now impossible. Listen from 2:30 onwards and confirm this.

Now for some comments on what he said throughout this press conference.

At 00:55 the journalist asks him about the NRR, and whether there could be some changes to the rules in the future to decide how group stages are decided. In typical Sarfaraz fashion, he redirects the question towards the required win margin against Bangladesh, acts like and innocent child and literally says "I don't know what is the reason behind this, but I can't do anything. Tsk." and shrugs and moves on. Sarfaraz, you know that the reason for this is how badly your team has lost when it lost, and how it has barely managed to win when it did win. As the captain, you can't just stay "I can't do anything" and insinuate that ICC was somehow unfair to you by giving you this target when the maths are not subject to bias. I would say stop blaming everything but yourself, your captaincy and your team's performance, but you have proven that you are incapable of that so I'll just move on for now.

At 4:00 journalists asks him about disappointment. Sarfaraz makes sure to point out that "things have happened that are not in our hands, we'll try our best to win tomorrow." Sarfaraz, were the WI, Aus and Ind games also out of your hands? The game against NZ when in typical Sarfaraz fashion you pushed the field back after 5 wickets for less than 90, brought on non-wicket takers, let them build a partnership and take the NZ score to almost 250? Then deflecting on the pitches. Still blaming everything he can, except for his pathetic captaincy and his team's overall poor performance. In the end of that answer, he even tries to sell us the Pakistani teams "good performance for beating two semi-finalists", as Pakistan is getting kicked out of the world cup.

At 11:05, he basically says with a smile that he still wants to be and is hoping to continue being the Pakistan captain. This, after all the losses from the Champions trophy onwards in both home and away ODIs and Tests. This man is so shameless and pathetic that it's hard to believe. No sense of responsibility or guilt at all. And he keeps saying that PCB will do whatever is best for Pakistan cricket and Pakistan, after they kept persisting with him as a captain (and, as he hopes, will continue to do so). What a load of rubbish.

At 13:00, the journalist asks a very reasonable question about Pakistan team's performance since the Champions Trophy, including being kicked out of Asia Cup after losing to Bangladesh, about the Australia series, NZ series, ENG series (he forgot about the SA series). And asked if Pakistan team's downfall had started after the Champions Trophy, because that is what the stats are saying at least. Instead of taking responsibility or answering like a man (let alone a leader or captain), Sarfaraz decides to make a pouty face and simply ask for the next question, acting as if the journalist has just said something blasphemous. This Sarfaraz is a man who can't even face reality if it is not in his favor.

AT 13:45, journalist asked him about takeaways from the tournament. This idiot mentions literally everyone by name except for Haris, the man who literally played match winning innings twice and was not being selected because of Sarfaraz's genious. If you are mentioning everyone by name, at least don't miss out some one like that, you buffoon!

Basically, this man will continue to shamelessly drown Pakistan cricket as long as he can get to play captain. If PCB continue with this buffoon as a captain, and if Pakistanis allow this to happen, then Pakistanis DESERVE all the humiliation that is inevitably going to come Pakistan's way - as well as the continuing downfall and destruction of Pakistani cricket.

We'd be lucky to get 300! Should have shown some urgency in previous matches against the likes of Afghanistan if they were so worried about the run rate.

No point going for the impossible. Just play to win against Bangladesh and if that means just making 320 then so be it. Even the best hitting team cannot achieve 500 and then bowl out opposition for less than 150. To get scores of 450 plus the pitch has to be really flat and bowling hopeless, which Bangladesh bowling is not. And Bangladesh will never get bowled out below 250, they have some very good batsmen. Pak will also be without Wahab and will return choka machine Hasan Ali.

500 is not impossible , but Pakistan does not have the batting power to get that.

500 is mathematically possible to score in 50 overs. However, in half a century of one day internationals, not once has any team scored more than 500 runs.

The highest team score in a one day international: 481
The highest team score in a world cup ODI: 417

I actually am in agreement with your overall message. Just offering some perspective about how difficult that 500 team score is, especially in a world cup.

This particular match is no ordinary world cup match. This is an absolute DO OR DIE scenario for team Pakistan. PERFORM OR PERISH scenario.

If Mickey Arthur ever wanted a 'cornered scenario' situation, this is it!

If any one manages to pull it off for Pakistan under such pressure with so much at stake, in my books they shall be the ABSOLUTE BEST CRICKETERS to ever walk the surface of planet earth.

Better than Bradman.
Better than Tendulkar.
Better than Sobers.
Better than Viv Richards.
Better than Miandad.
Better than Lara.
Better than Ponting.
Better than ABD.
Better than Gilchrist.

COMBINED!

If they pull this off, I don't care if Pakistan goes on to win the world cup or not. Performing against such impossible odds and crushing pressure, in my books is greater than winning this world cup.

That would be the greatest cricketing jail break, ever.

Should Pakistan pull it off, I shall officially become a team PAKISTAN FAN (and cease to be a team INDIA FAN) from here on to eternity. No doubt about it.

People are pretending like Bangladesh isn't a cricketing side and they haven't been doing that well.

We will have a big problem winning the match let alone winning by 350 runs.

I know - absolutely no issues. Even if it was Australia or India, that should be the spirit.

Why your captain reacted like that (next question please!!!).

It's irrelevant. Pakistan won't achieve it anyway.

If the pitch is flat, Pakistan can score 400+. Our bowling has not been that impressive. Let's see.

Loved his answer to the downfall question :19:

honestly, we should play Asif Ali inplace of Imam and hope for the best. Go all guns blazing, even if they bundle out for 105, atleast they can say they tried.:dhoni

Honestly, this post needs to be stickied at the front of the forum.

I think most are aware of that... it'd be foolish to think otherwise.

It's a 50/50 game, if Mushfiqur hadn't messed up vs NZ, this would've been a quarter-final....

If Pakistan can even score 400, they'll leave the tournament as serious contenders that got unlucky. Go all guns blazing from ball one, smash em!

One thing is for sure, Sarfraz will give his 110% as an attempt to save his spot in the team.

Do you remember the 'pleasant moment' question to Kohli? :)

2 people confused Virat Kohli on Sunday - Mohammad Amir and this journalist #CT17 pic.twitter.com/9lT64CvsIn
— Saj Sadiq (@Saj_PakPassion) June 20, 2017

****** media journalist for sure! What the hell is pleasant moment from no ball? Even in Hindi Urdu it will sound hilarious lol

NOTE: Please don't take this post seriously.

Game Plan for Pakistan (if they bat first):

This should be their lineup:

1. Fakhar Zaman
2. Asif Ali
3. Wahab Riaz
4. Babar Azam
5. Haris Sohail
6. Mohammed Hafeez
7. Hasan Ali
8. Shoaib Malik
9. Sarfraz Ahmed
10. Mohammad Amir
11. Shaheen Shah Afridi

Even though it is pretty much impossible, I just want to see them try as much as possible. I like the fact that Sarfraz Ahmed said they will try to score 500. I am not joking when I say Wahab should bat at three. He has already made a good 45 against Aus so he is risk but a good risk. If Asif Ali gets going, he can a quick 50 or even more, and we need Fakhar to be in champions trophy mode. Our batting (with this lineup) is very deep plus we have our 3 best fast bowlers and Imad and Hafeez (if spin is needed).

Now about Wahab, since the first match I was waiting for him to unleash his potentinal and destroy batsman with 150k reverse yorkers and bouncers but sadly it hasn't really came. However, this match is the perfect time for him to be at his absolute best. Wahab also hasn't really won us a game in a long while (I remember Mickey Arthur last year saying he hasn't won a game for Pakistan in 2 years). But now, this is Wahabs chance to finally win a match for Pakistan in a long while. . This is insane, but I predict Wahab will get a quick century batting at 3 and at least 5 wickets with the ball. Mark my words If Pakistan are going to win this match and somehow qualify for semis, it will be because of wahab. Wahab Riaz is the key.

it's about 60-40 in favour of Pakistan without the impossible task. Getting to 300 is stiff anyway, now we want 450 realistically to give us a chance.

Not happening, but I hope we do go out trying rather than trundling to 300

I like Wahab & Asif up there, should be the way to go really. Ignoring Malik & Hasan Ali there, hopefully that is the ONLY funny part. :ma

Let's just go for it who knows Fakhar may score a 300 off 90 deliveries and we end up with 610!
