Derbyshire have signed Pakistan fast bowler, Zaman Khan, for this summer’s Vitality Blast.

The 21-year-old fast bowler, who has been clocked at 90MPH, has played 49 career T20s, picking up 59 wickets at an average of 23.35 and with best figures of 4-16.

He made his international debut for Pakistan against Afghanistan in March of this year and has so far played in six IT20s, maintaining a miserly economy rate of 6.66.

The young quick has enjoyed a trophy-laden career so far, winning the Pakistan Super League twice with Lahore Qalanders, in 2022 and 2023, while he also lifted silverware in the most recent Lanka Premier League with Jaffna Kings.

He is set to arrive before the end of May, and will join up with a pace unit containing the likes of England Lions pair, George Scrimshaw and Sam Conners, as well as Sri Lanka great, Suranga Lakmal.

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, said: “Zaman Khan is one of the brightest young fast bowlers in Pakistan and he brings experience of T20 success around the world into our dressing room, which will help us to reach our own goals.

“He recently made his debut in one of the best international white ball attacks and looked right at home, so it’s incredibly exciting to welcome him for our T20 campaign.”

Zaman Khan added: “Playing in England is something I’ve wanted to experience and to do it working with Mickey Arthur at Derbyshire is a dream scenario.

“Derbyshire have been impressive in T20 cricket over the last few years, so I’m looking forward to playing with this squad and seeing if we can challenge again this summer.”

Fresh of the back of international call-ups for Pakistan, seamer Zaman Khan has joined up with Derbyshire for the Vitality Blast campaign.

Representing Pakistan up through the age-groups, the 21-year-old fast bowler has developed an action not too dissimilar to Sri Lanka legend Lasith Malinga. Khan has amazed crowds with his eye-catching death bowling and ability to limit the run-scoring of batters. In his four international matches to date, Zaman Khan’s economy rate is only 6.66.

The bulk of the seamer’s T20 appearances have been made in the Pakistan Super League. Representing Lahore Qalandars, he has won the trophy twice already in his short career.

The 2022 edition saw Khan named as PSL emerging player of the season, with 18 wickets across the campaign.

More recently, Khan claimed 15 dismissals on the way to the 2023 PSL title, holding his nerve in the last over of the final to see his side win by one run.

As well as winning silverware in Pakistan, Khan has trophy success out in the Lanka Premier League with Jaffna Kings.

Zaman Khan has represented Pakistan in recent IT20 series against Afghanistan and New Zealand earlier this year. Bowling alongside the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, Khan has not looked out of place at all. Afridi is a team-mate at franchise side Qalandars and is a player Khan has looked up to for guidance and mentorship over the past couple of years.

The Pakistan quick can bowl at both ends of the innings but is especially effective at the back end of run-chases. Khan has spent a lot of time perfecting how to bowl yorkers, slower-balls and different variations to help his side win crucial matches and T20 titles.

He joins Derbyshire hoping to continue his hot streak of silverware success, as he boosts the Falcons bowling line-up on their pursuit of domestic T20 success.

Great opportunity for him.

I think he could do very well in the Blast.

Belongs to a poor family, and his luck has opened up ever since he started playing with LQ. Good for him.

Haris Rauf became a big name after his BBL stint, if Zaman can show his PSL magic for derbyshire, guy can be fast track in to our domestic teams. He has not played first class yet and has barely playd any list a

So Haider and Zaman - supposedly good T20 guys - expect good from both in this format.

Great opportunity, i may now go down to a match or two being a local after this signing. Zaman also hard worker

He is an X-factor player and can go on to have a splendid career on the T20 circuit.

It's nice to see someone from a poor background rewarded for their hard work.

All the best for his stint. I hope he smashed it Inshallah.

Good luck young man, fully deserved opportunity to shine in T20 blast.

I hope he also uses this opportunity to work on his fielding and his batting as both need improvements.

On his way Zaman...

Zaman Khan has arrived and included in the squad for the T20 Blast

GrNptV0.png

Mickey Arthur speaking about Zaman after his arrival:

"Well, the key was he fitted into what we needed. We needed somebody who can bowl us two overs in the power play and then can bowl two overs at death. And that was something when we had a look at our squad that we felt we lacked, and he can do that, and he does that incredibly well. So it was great to see him out here, great to see him practicing, great to see that he hasn't lost that ability to get that Yorker in."

Zaman Khan making his debut today vs Lancs

And a maiden wicket for Zaman

Ends up on 2/41 in 4 overs - expensive and side lost

Overall was expensive, but 2 wickets and some decent deliveries.

Plenty to take forward to the next match.

Didn't look to be bowling fast enough today perhaps he was feeling a bit under the weather.

He needs to work on developing variations and use the crease.

Just like Pathirana has been doing well in the IPL, Zaman needs to use this time to work on his game too and improve.

Don't think he needs to be looked into playing red ball cricket and should just focus on white ball cricket.

Mickey Arthur speaking to Derbyshire media on Zaman Khan's debut in the T20 Blast:

"Zaman Khan, in the first couple of overs struggled. He was probably nervous. He came up really well. And the wicket of Mitchell in particular was a really nice showcase of what he can do."

"I've got no worry about him at all. He got off a plane on Thursday, straight into training on Friday. He'll just get better and better. He possesses the skills we need. He bowls an incredibly good fast Yorker, he bowls a good bouncer and he bowls a very good slow ball. Those are skills we need."

"And he'll only get better and better. This is first time in England, first time in these conditions. We need to just get another week into him and he'll be good to go on Friday night."

2 for 20 off his 4 overs for Zaman in 2nd XI game today. Starting to get use to the conditions, think he will do really well in the blast

Zaman Khan gets his first Vitality Blast wicket at Derby! He has Vasconcelos (5) caught by Chappell.

A bit expensive tonight.

Leaked 36 runs in 4 overs without a wicket against Leicestershire.

Zaman Khan with the important wicket of Moeen Ali (16) - still expensive - 20 runs in 2 overs

Excellent once again tonight

3-34 from 4 overs

He now has 8 wickets in 5 matches and an economy-rate of 8.31

Lovely ball to finish the game for Derbyshire last night

Good for Mickey also!

Disaster of a game for Zaman today vs Yorks, 3.2 overs for 37 runs and no wickets!

1/44 in 4 overs for Zaman vs Birmingham - expensive.

Smashed around today against a strong side.

He couldn't quite get it right.

as long as he learns a thing or two from this tour, that's all one should ask for. Dont see him being successful in Intl cricket. Need tall fast bowlers, Same reason I feel Naseem Shah has disadvantage because of his height.

Rocket yorker from Zaman today

3.4 overs took 2 for 34 including the wicket of Shaheen.

A bit unlucky.

Good battle between Shaheen and Zaman - 6 and out.

Watching Zaman Khan taking wickets is so soothing to the eye.

I would pick him in red ball as well for Pakistan.

Struggled with the slippery conditions in his first over but came back really well to bowl a couple of tidy overs.

I met Zaman yesterday.

Not words I say too often these days, but what a humble, well-mannered and polite cricketer.

He's a credit to his family and Pakistan.

I wasnt convinced initially but Has done really well. He will become a useful T20 PK squad player in the future
