The just-concluded Test series between England and India has been closely contested and immensely enjoyable throughout, and it got the finish it deserved when KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant added 204 for the sixth wicket to give India hopes of a dramatic victory.

India captain Virat Kohli, despite losing 4-1, paid tribute to their knocks, and to the format which he believes this series has breathed life into anew.

“A lot of credit has to go to both those young guys, stepping up at such a difficult stage, three wickets down for two runs,” Kohli said. “Jinks [Ajinkya Rahane] got stuck in with KL but I think the way KL and Rishabh batted showed the kind of character that we’ve got in the team and the kind of cricket that we’ve played in the series.

“It might not show in the scoreline but both the sides know that it’s been a competitive series, it’s taken a lot out of both the sides, and it’s been something that we’ve really enjoyed. We’ve taken up the challenge head on, and today was an example of two guys not giving up and actually entertaining the crowd. As I said, this is probably the revival of Test cricket again and shows people what it means to all of us, and for people watching as well it’s a great advertisement for Test cricket.”

Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul almost stole an astonishing victory Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul almost stole an astonishing victory
He admitted that at the start of the day, which India began 58/3 and needing more than 400 to win, that he didn’t consider the prospect of victory, but also that that his team then got close only showed the beauty of Test cricket all the more.

“To be brutally honest we didn’t speak about if we can win this game or not,” he said. “The basic idea was to go out and play the game that we are known to play, whatever we feel confident about. When those two guys started hitting the ball well, we felt that there might be hope because those two were scoring runs freely and there were overs, but we knew England’s a professional side, and they will tighten up things. We were just waiting and watching.

“Very quickly things can change in Test cricket and we realised that with KL falling and then Rishabh falling as well that the situation can become totally different within the span of two-three overs. That’s the beauty of this format as well. That’s to take nothing away from those two guys who showed heart, especially someone like Rishabh who’s new to Test cricket, shown a lot of grit and character.

"KL’s been around for a while but this guy comes in and plays a knock like that when he’s not sure of how the few innings went before that. It tells us that we have character in the team, we just need more experience and how to close out situations. We have the belief in the team as well.”

Kohli gave Cook a guard of honour to kick off the Test match Kohli gave Cook a guard of honour to kick off the Test match
He also had a few words to say about what he feels needs to be done to maintain the relevance of the format the world over.

“First and foremost there should be exciting pitches all over the world, and both teams should be willing to go for a result,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that when you go ahead in the series that you start playing safe cricket, that’s something that I don’t believe in, and I don’t think that any team should be in that sort of mindset. The fans will come and watch if both teams want to win and be competitive and that’s where the excitement in this format, Test cricket lies. I don’t think that should go away at all.”

His words about the toughness of Test cricket echoed those of Alastair Cook, who knows more than most; he retired today having completed his 160th Test match in succession. “Even today, Test cricket shows how hard it is,” said Cook. “You turn up thinking you need seven wickets and you’ve got a good chance of winning the game, but the way KL and Rishabh played, it was testing us right to the end. It shows what a hard game it is.”

After his interview had concluded, Kohli had one last thing he wanted to say to the legend of English cricket who had played his last. “Just one word for Alastair as well, who had a great career. I wish you well and want to congratulate you for doing what you’ve done and want to wish you all the very best for your future endeavours.”

Another moral victory for the Indian team. Revival of test cricket. Thanks good guy Kohli.

Mehh..

Cricket in ENG is always good to watch and the wickets allow good test cricket for viewers.

Back to UAE, INDIA, the flat tracks in AUS and 0 interest is what you get.

What?

I m sorry, but would any of u pls explain to me what was he actually said trying to say?

Did't India get hammered in every single test?

Then how did it revive test cricket? It would have made sense if the series was closely contested.

The series WAS closely contested.Only 2nd and 3rd tests were one sided.1st and 4rth could have gone any way.But england were better side and deserved their victory.

Yes not so competitive series, losing 1-4, how will this revive test cricket?

For me, Pak tour of England 2016, where they drew was the best revival, if any. Drawing 2-2 is no easy feat. And also was in the driving seat in the 3rd game until 4th day.

You can try as much as u want. But, we were

Test cricket in England doesnt really need revival, if it did, it would have been the 05 Ashes. If it needed a rubber stamp, it would have been Pak '16, not this rubbish.

I think it was a good series to follow. Quite a few games went to day 4/5

I agree.

Test Cricket anywhere was never dead in the first place that Kohli's talking about a revival.

Irrelevant to the statement Kohli was making. He only mentioned how closely the series was contested and the interest it generated all around.

But the comment he made was ridiculous. It didnt revive any test cricket.

There are so many competitive series Pakistan played away , the only thing which matters is WIN column. It is how you finish the game not just play the game . Overall England batting was awful ( apart from the 5th test 2nd innings) but still managed to win the series 4-1. India has been hammered by below avg performance. If anything , India should be worried about their away results

Precisemente.

Actually after seeing Kohli and his learning curve, I predict India will improve over the next few years and I personally believe in 2020, Kohli will lead his team to a series win over England, South Africa or Australia. (if Australia doesn't happen in this winter).

Just a personal observation.

They have the ingredients, just need a bit more time to gel.

Attitude’ and ‘sustained pressure’ are the two keywords Virat Kohli’s is taking from the England tour which concluded on Tuesday with yet another defeat for India that sealed a 4-1 series win for the hosts.

Time and again throughout the series, Kohli has spoken of how he’s happy with the way his team has approached the contest despite being repeatedly put under situations where the world’s top-ranked team were playing catchup. This, on several occasions, was after they had England under the pump but allowed them to not just wriggle out of the pressure but set them up for potential victories. Edgbaston and Southampton come to mind.

Kohli feels the team has the right attitude and calibre to win but they have allowed advantageous positions to slip away. And that’s where England have been better than India.

“We created pressure, we were not able to hold that pressure for long enough [with the bat and the ball],” Kohli said. “At crucial stages, we could not keep that pressure on for long, and that’s why they took advantage of those situations better than us. If you look at the batting orders, there’s hardly anything to pick from both the sides. Conveniently, a lot of people want to target only one side. We understand why this series has gone the way it has and to be honest we don’t see a massive-massive portion that we need to correct, because if you are competing in every game, and you have an upper hand in every game at some stage or the other, you are doing something right.”

Kohli said capitalising on important moments is the only way India can move on from winning just a Test to series.

“We are not starting behind all the time. We’ve have fought back in a series, England has had to fight back a few times. So they deserved to win because they played better than us, that is how we look at this series, we do not look at this series as something that makes us think we can’t play in overseas conditions. Of course we can play, but can we capitalise on the important moments better than the opposition? At the moment, no, we haven’t done that, but in future, we want to do that, and that’s the only way we win series,” he said.

While Kohli, expectedly, is unhappy with the result, he’s not doubt that his team gave everything it could on the England tour. “Our aim is to win series, not to win the odd Test match and be happy about it, we are definitely not happy about the way the series has gone, but the way we played cricket is something that, not me, no one in the change room, no one doubts even one per cent, because we played with the right attitude and the will to win every game that we played,” the 29-year-old added.

In hindsight, the template of India’s performances over the course of the five-Test series was set at Edgbaston, venue of the first match. They were in driving position when England had been reduced to 87/7 in their second innings. Sam Curran then put into motion the first of his several rescue acts to revive England. India lost the match by 31 runs.

Kohli accepts that his team has to stamp their authority from the first game onwards. “And as I have mentioned in the past as well, we need to start series well, we can’t warm-up in to a series because the first Test is always crucial, and we need to make sure we are in the right frame of mind to be able to do all the things right to strike first,” he said.

“The progress has been there. Definitely, you have to do some things right to be in a position where both results are possible [victories for both sides]. More importantly, we need to recognise when the situation is in our favour, how to solidify that situation even further, and make sure that the opposition cannot get back in to the game. More often than not, we have given the advantage to the opposition rather than them brilliantly turning around a situation. Sam has been outstanding through the series but apart from that batting slot, it’s not up to brilliant batting always, it’s been up to us not applying the pressure for long enough as well.

Ishant Sharma was unavailable to bowl on the fourth morning of the fifth Test as he sat out due to a sore ankle. India were a bowler short as England declared after 423/8, setting India an improbable 464 to win. Then, they lost three wickets for two runs in the final session before KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant made it a contest, scoring centuries.

“We were a bowler short in the second innings as well, but even then the batsmen came out and played liked that. A lot of teams in the past basically have given up, but we did not. And this kind of series shows you exactly the kind of character of individuals are, and I see that as an opportunity and not adversity because if you keep winning all the time, a lot of faults are swept under the carpet, you don’t realise the faults you need to work on and I certainly haven’t played my cricket like that,” he observed.

After being three wickets down on the fourth day, in chase of a 450+ total, how did he motivate his batsmen? Kohli replied, “The one thing that we spoke about was how we react to the fifth day’s play is going to determine a lot of what happens in the future for all of us. It is very easy to surrender and say it is too difficult or we might not be able to do this. But if you show the right attitude then, throughout your career, you will have more good memories than bad and the game will give you back because you are respecting the game and playing in the right manner.

“Guys like KL, who hadn’t had a great run, but still goes and plays like that. Guys want to take up their responsibility and want to be in the fight. Rishabh was doubtful after a few innings and then he comes and plays like that as well. I mean that partnership was something like a great show of character.”

“A lot of teams in the past basically have given up but we did not do so… look we don’t think like people on the outside I have said before and again. And this kind of series shows you exactly the kind of character of individuals. I see that as an opportunity and not adversity because if you keep winning all the time a lot of faults are swept under the carpet, you don’t realize the faults you need to work on and I certainly haven’t played my cricket like that,” Kohli said.

Test cricket is dying unfortunately. But this series has had some good cricket.

Will Kholi last that long? will he be in his prime by then? He is already having some back issue? And what about the bowlers?

The only thing that has been revived is Kohli's confidence in England....Rahul's spot as a regular opener....Pant as a regular Test keeper/batsman

Will Kholi last that long? will he be in his prime by then? He is already having some back issue? And what about the bowlers?

He will unless something goes awfully wrong.

2020 is not 5 years away.

Its less than 1.5 years.

He needs to play that long to cement his ATG status anyways.

As far as I know they dont play England away for next 3 years same as SA.

If he is serious about his cricket and want to extend his career then he should say goodbye to IPL.

He can wear those multi colored pyjamas again after taking retirement from international cricket. :inti

Not sure why people are saying it was very close. In matches where 200-300 runs are being scored losing by 60-100 is not a small margin.

hain jee? au Kohli sahib test cricket in England is doing fine without your overhyped spice boys thanks very much..agar revive kurna hay to khusboo laga kay Lahore ao.

Agreed entirely.

India couldn't reach a 194 in the first test, with a whole day left to play.

England than won via an innings and 159 runs, that's not just a win, that is destruction.

India won by a convincing 203 but it would turn out to be an exception, not the rule.

England would then win by 60 and 118 runs.

Thumped thumped thumped.

This actually reminds me a bit of the stint Harby had on commentary when he started talking about how badly test cricket is doing in India (Nasser scrambled to keep the BCCI on track lol). If test cricket needs reviving, it's in Asia.
