Johannesburg: India skipper Virat Kohli on Saturday heaped praise on the bowlers, describing their performance as the biggest positive that has come out of the three-Test series against South Africa.

"The bowlers were the biggest positive; we haven't done 60 wickets in the past. We want to correct certain mistakes. That lower-order showed character.

"This win feels great. As batsmen, if we can think about countering conditions better, we can do away from home."

India had already conceded the Test series after losing the opening two matches and Kohli lauded his team for showing character and guts and pull off a dramatic win in the third Test, despite losing the series.

"We required some character on a pitch that was very difficult but our guys showed great guts. Batting first didn't go down well with a lot of people. Hats off to the team for showing character after the series was gone," he said.

Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla scored fifties as South Africa dominated the first session on day 4 but Kohli said he was confident that it would be difficult for the hosts to comeback if they start losing wickets.

"It's a funny game. You think of many ways to get a batsmen out. Amla and Elgar played well. In pressure situations, when wickets go down in Test cricket, it's very difficult to come back," he said.

His South African counterpart Faf du Plessis said his team was sloppy and were completely outplayed by India in the third Test.

"I think India outplayed us in this Test. We didn't take our chances. We were just sloppy. From bowling point of view, we weren't consistent as the previous Tests. From a fielding point of view, we were just average compared to Centurion," he said.

"India were the better team. It was a surprise how the surface played this morning. Once we got through that, Elgar and Hashim (had a) great partnership together. But the wicket tells you that the bowlers tend to do a bit more.

"We are disappointed to lose the Test. But if you had asked me 2-1 before the series, I'd have taken it hands down. India is a fantastic side. We played very good cricket throughout the series and are the deserved series winners and I am very proud of my team."

Du Plessis said the series win will them a lot of confidence going into the one-day series.

"There's a lot of limited-overs cricket against a very good Indian side and then we have the Australia series. So we take a lot of confidence from the Test series win."

Pacer Vernon Philander, who was adjudged the Player of the Series, said, "Sorry we couldn't win this one, but happy with my performances. We'd have loved to pull this one off too, was my 50th Test, but India played better. I will probably take a week's break and prepare for a tough series coming up against Australia."

India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who scalped four wickets and scored 30 and 33 in the two innings, was adjudged the Player of the Match.

"I'm happy with my performance. Whenever I get a chance, I try to do well. It came off at the right moment. I enjoy batting when it comes to Tests. I tried to stay for as much as possible and runs came. Amazing track to bowl on. Few awkward balls but overall it was a good wicket.

Agree with him. India competed a lot better than I thought they would. They never let SA's batsmen run away with it in any of the games.

Not letting SA score more than 300 after 1st innings of 1st Test is impressive.

If only batting was half as good as bowling was, India could have won this.

Normally Indian bowlers get a phainty even on green tracks when they are touring SA. But this unit as many predicted were superb and put the home side under a lot of pressure.

This series reminds me of the Aus tour of India last year. Rank turners were dished out and Aus beat India at our own game. India had to work extremely hard to win the series.

India's bowlers did well. Rahane , Bhuvi, and KL should have played all 3 games.

Really impressed with Bhuvi and Bumrah, expected more from Sami altough het did well in the last match

Didn't rate Bhumrah as a test class bowler. But he stepped up and delivered. Shamis' fitness is always a big question mark. You never know which side of shami shows up. Bhuvi is a keeper. He will eventually start picking fifers.

He needs to step up and admit that there were serious lapses in judgement when it comes to selection. Bowling was a clear positive, but that's stating the obvious. This was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to win a series in a country where we've never won before. He failed to deliver as a captain and needs to take responsibility. The euphoria of third Test is a nice smokescreen to gloss over the mistakes of first two Tests.

Catching was terrible too.

The day Kohli starts acknowledging his personal judgement errors is the day we know alien body snatchers have arrived on our planet.

I remember the last series when we set 400 something for the saffers to chase , and we had a great chance to bowl them out. But our pacers even a over the hill Zak huffing and puffing to bowl 140's had absolutely NO BITE.

The Saffers drew that test and a fired up Steyn helped them win the second one. That was a truly desperate moment. Even with a good batting performance and a very favorable chance to win, our bowling simply wasn't good enough. We have come a long way from that now.

Hopefully we win atleast 1 test in Aus and draw series in England , NZ . That'll justify the losses here.

I think we should prepare to win in both England and NZ and look to draw the series in Australia. This should be the bare minimum that Kohli should look to get out of the team. Previous teams under Ganguly and Dhoni managed to do it so Kohli and Shastri should stop with the big talk and actually deliver some results.

But they will give the examples how those teams competed in India!

Indian bowlers did do well this time as not many expected them to do so.

Their bowling is formidable and is building up good pace too, with the addition of Bumrah as well.
