Why is Kohli the Indian captain despite regularly making poor tactical decisions on field and poor team selection choices?
He is aggressive with his behaviour but goes defensive at the wrong time with his tactics and that has lost India matches.
When England were 87-7 in the first test he took Ashwin off and allowed Sam Curran to set India a target of 190. There were other selection blunders (Kuldeep on a green wicket) and I believe that with a better captain India could have made the series 2-3 or even 3-2 to India instead of 1-4.
He dropped Rahane for first 2 tests in SA and then found that Rahane was crucial to the 3rd test which India won.
He also dropped Pujara for the wrong reason (dropping him for not scoring any runs is fine but dropping him due to strike rate in a test match is nonsense).
Perth test he failed to pick and spinner and also left India with a very long tail. And then tactically on the field he failed to properly attack new batsman before they had settled. He bowled Vihari to the new batsman Handscomb and left spaces so Handscomb could settle. He often has boundary riders in a test match to new batsman as opposed to the extra catcher.
There are many other examples of his poor tactics, but what is worrying is that he doesn’t accept or learn from mistakes. And he got a coach in Shastri, who he knows will never challenge him.
No one doubts he’s one of the best batsman in the world, but that does not equate to being a good captain.
I think that India were reluctant to give Rahane the captaincy because he was going through a form drop and was not 100% certain of his place.
Either way, while Kohli’s batting is fighting to keep India competitive abroad, his captaincy is costing them.
