Virat Kohli has been named as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year. The India captain is joined by England’s Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Tammy Beaumont in receiving the honour.

Kohli has also been named as the men’s Leading Cricketer in the World, a feat he has now accomplished three years in a row. His compatriot Smriti Mandhana, meanwhile, has been named as the women’s Leading Cricketer in the World for 2018.

Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan has been named as Wisden’s Leading Twenty20 Cricketer in the World for the second year in a row.

The Five Cricketers of the Year are chosen by Lawrence Booth, the editor of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, with the 2019 version serving as the 156th edition.

Kohli topped the run charts in India’s 4-1 Test series defeat to England last summer. On the naming of the batsman as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year, Booth says: “Despite finishing on the losing side, India captain Virat Kohli shone with the bat, laying to rest his struggles in England in 2014 by scoring a magnificent 593 runs in five Tests, a full 244 more than his nearest rival on either side.”

Beaumont enjoyed a record-breaking summer

On the batting exploits of Beaumont, Booth writes: “In nine days in June, Tammy Beaumont confirmed the talent that had made her the leading run-scorer at the 2017 World Cup. She scored three white-ball hundreds against South Africa, the third from only 47 deliveries, an England T20 record. Her international tally for the summer was 628, another England record, beating Jan Brittin’s 595 in 1984.”

The Surrey duo of Burns and Curran both made their England Test bows in 2018. On the opening batsman, Booth says: “For the fifth successive season, Rory Burns passed 1,000 first-class runs for Surrey, and finished the Championship with more runs – 1,359 – than anyone in the country. He also captained the club to their first Championship title since 2002, and earned his first Test caps, in Sri Lanka and the West Indies.”

Curran and Burns made their England debuts in 2018 and were part of Surrey’s County Championship-winning side

Booth argues that “Curran was central to England’s 4-1 Test win over India, the world’s No. 1-ranked side, turning the games at Edgbaston and Southampton with hard-hit half-centuries”.

Buttler’s batting is considered by Booth as “one of the highlights of 2018”. On England’s vice-captain, Booth adds: “Recalled to the Test side, he scored 510 runs in seven home Tests, more than any of his team-mates, and registered his first century, against India at Trent Bridge. He also produced one of the great one-day innings, an unbeaten 110 to see off Australia by one wicket at Old Trafford.”

Buttler enjoyed a successful return to the Test arena in 2018

With Kohli also being crowned as the Leading Cricketer of the World in 2018 – he hit 2,735 runs across the international formats – Booth adds: “His Test batting, especially in England, was magnificent, while his 50-over form moved to a new level – if that was possible.”

On Mandhana being named as the other Leading Cricketer in the World, Booth writes: “Smriti Mandhana rose to prominence in 2018 with a string of eye-catching innings for India, racking up more runs – 1,291 – than anyone in the limited-overs formats. She passed 50 on 13 occasions.”

Rashid, meanwhile, won the same award in successive years. “He claimed 96 wickets in all T20 matches – a record for a calendar year – and proved hard to hit in whichever tournament he played,” Booth writes.

great player...works hard on his game and should be held up as an example for young cricketers..
people like akmal and co should sit and study this guy..

Deserves it, had one of the GOAT series in England though it didn't help his team win.

He has surprassed Sachin,Lara, and Viv as batsman. He needs a world cup to cement himself as greatest of all time after Bradman.

No, he hasn't. Certainly not in test cricket. Need to maintain the same performance over at least 100 tests. Longevity counts for something.

Well.. there are people who consider Barry Richards as an all time great after a grand total of 4 tests. So Kohli being greatest is not all that far fetched.

I know. But they'd be in minority.

Not yet in Tests, but he'll surpass all of them by the time he hangs up his boots. I certainly haven't watched a better batsman than him. Maybe Sachin was on par, but still not better than Kohli.

How many tests did Bradman play.He does not have to do anything but he will reach 100 tests. He has already scored more hundreds than Viv in tests.Lara is not even close as ODI player. So overall he is far better than Lara. Sachin never had peak like Kohli.

Best post in this thread!!

Kohli is the hardest working and most consistent cricketer in the world at the moment. He deserves all the credit he is receiving.

I wish more players would work on their game/body like Kohli does. Espacially the subcontinental ones. Most looks like uncles with a tubby sticking out. Rightfully deserves the nomination!

Sachin never had peak like Kohli.
Speaking of peaks, Tendulkar was averaging almost 57 in his 171st test. Lets see if Kohli manages that. Will be happiest though if he does that.

Speaking strictly about their exploits in tests, Tendulkar was a comfortably better test bat than him. Only thing which Kohli has over Tendulkar is that he already has some humongous test series which Tendulkar never had.

Sachin avg is the most overated thing.Sachin never scored 500 runs in a series nor he scored 100 in both innings of a test match. There is reason why Sachin was never a great match winnner in tests matches. He always disappeared when his team needed him the most.

Keep Bradman out of these debates. He was a freakiest of freaks who probably will never be seen again in test cricket.

Kohli averaged 131 in odis last year scoring more than 1000 runs, it is the closest we will see anyone to Bradman even though it is Odis.

That's due to Barry's outstanding First class record.

But he is considered a test all time great...by some. How do you explain that?

By the way there are players with better FC record.

Who called him an ATG?
With only a handful of matches played, he can't be an ATG.

Do you even understand Bradman averages approx 100 over a period of over a decade and not over a year? Let that sink in first and then try to reply.

You missed the pertinent points, Bradman pretty much played against the same team, England, in 2 countries, for the best part of his career.

This is like saying Kohli played all his Test matches vs Bangladesh in either India or Bangladesh.

Perspective and context are everything.

Best overall batsman of this generation and he does all this without any unconventional shots.

So England of that time was as bad current Bangladesh?

Also have a look at Don's average and average of next best.

Although I agree you can't compare players across eras but then Bradman was a statistical freak and won't ever be bettered especially in current age.

Virat Kohli is a legend today - that is what makes him so special.

Lol its ok that they worship kohli but they don't have to do it by bringing down Sachin. :inti

That's what insecure people do, they to big up their heroes by bringing the best in the business down. Dravid fans have always tried to do this with Sachin.

That's due to Barry's outstanding First class record.

There are a few ex players with outstanding first class records but were big time flops in international cricket. Graeme Hick is one fine example.
