Virat Kohli’s decision to opt out of India’s first-ever Test against Afghanistan for a County stint seems to have created a sharp divide within the BCCI. While the cricket board officials seek the captain’s presence for the game, the Committee of Administrators (CoA), it is learnt, want Kohli to be have all-important game time in England before India’s series opening T20 game at Manchester on July 3.

India welcome Afghanistan to Test fold in Bangalore from June 14. The BCCI officials feel Kohli’s absence from the historic game would be “disrespectful” to the touring team.

“If a decision has been taken to allow the India captain to miss an international game and play County cricket at that point of time, it would set a very bad precedent. It would give a very bad message to the visiting Afghanistan team; that maybe the opponents aren’t worthy for us. It would be disrespectful to the Afghanistan team and also, it would be unfair on the broadcaster,” a cricket board official told The Indian Express, adding: “(Even if) he is playing in England at that time, he can come back for one Test and then fly back. And if he is so keen to play County cricket, has he sought permission to miss his IPL games?”

The CoA hasn’t received any communication yet from the BCCI officials, with regard to requesting Kohli about making himself available for the Afghanistan Test. According to a source close to the Supreme Court-appointed Committee, “nothing has come to them” and at this stage, “everything is hypothetical”. Also, it is very unlikely that the CoA would make such a request to Kohli. “These players will be sent (to England) in advance to acclimatise. Six to seven players are going in advance,” the source said.

CoA’s assurance

CoA head Vinod Rai had earlier assured that India would put up a strong side against Afghanistan, while describing the preparation programme for the England tour as “macro-level planning”. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma are playing for Yorkshire and Sussex respectively from the start of the County season, while R Ashwin might return to play for Worcestershire after the IPL.

Test specialists Ajinkya Rahane, Murali Vijay and a few others would be part of Rahul Dravid’s India A squad, scheduled to play some first-class fixtures in England, against counties and England Lions, in June. The CoA, in consultation with the Indian team management, Dravid and chief selector MSK Prasad, finalised the arrangement last month.

Talking to the reporters in Kolkata yesterday, the Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO Shafiq Stanikzai, however, had said they would “miss” playing against Kohli. “We lived this dream to play this first Test against India in India. That moment has come true. Virat is a world cricket icon, something our players will miss the exposure playing against.”

Incidentally, Star India has recently bought the global consolidated rights to Indian cricket for the period between 2018-2023, with a bid of Rs 6,138 crore. The Afghanistan Test would be the first match on their roster.

Interesting turn of events. I don't understand why BCCI would schedule a test against Afghanistan with half of the team missing. I feel India should field their full strength team for the test and the players can go back to county cricket after the test is over. Playing a B team does not make sense.

Political stuff also - India needs to be showing complete support to Afg and VK's absence will not look good.

Good Job BCCI, why should we allow our captain and the biggest star in world cricket to play in domestic tournament of an inferior cricketing country. Kohli doesn't need county cricket to smash english trundlers, he's going to set the record straight once and for all this summer no matter what. All hail king kohli :shh

He averages a mighty 13 against the same trundlers in England so it would be wise for him to get some practice there.

That's why I said he's going to set the record straight once and for all this summer no matter what, learn to read genius. All hail king kohli :shh

Said this in another thread a while back, regardless of the quality of the opposition, the captain of a Test team should not be playing a domestic match whilst his country is playing a test match.

cricketjoshila Is this COA authority a permanent arrangement or temporary?

Agree with you. Missing a test to rest is fine but to play domestic cricket instead, I think is very wrong

BCCI is just trying to block India's biggest superstar playing in any other domestic game. Pretty lame tbh.

It's not about missing a test as if it's something sacred. Not even close.

BCCI's hand is forced by the broadcaster who have paid a billion dollars just a few weeks ago for Indian TV rights. The broadcaster has to earn its investment back and they cannot do so with star attractions missing.

Perhaps ECB changed their mind? Giving the rival sides top batsman the opportunity to use county Cricket to train for the Test series then paying him handsomely for it would be absurd. Tell him where to go! Would be different if India were not the touring side.

BCCI is right, Kohli should play. Afghanistan have earned the right to test themselves against the strongest sides possible.

Would have liked him to get the county season but now this might open up the door for Smith and Warner. They need this more than Kohli both due to financial reason and to avoid lack of exposure to FC Cricket for entire year.

And, if Indians play their full team, "test" will be over in 2 days and BCCI and the players will be done with obligation to host Afghanistan for a "test", only in two days.

Playing country in foreign condition would have helped him become even a better batsmen than he already is.
Poor decision if it’s true.

He should play against Afghanistan. Indian team should arrive early in England. That will give them enough preparation time.

He is not going to skip but he will be made to skip. Cricket is after all a powerful political tool for the Sanghis.

India is going to England late in the summer so conditions will be easier for batting. I'm sure Kohli will smash the English without the county season. As a matter of fact, I think India will go on to win the English series with quite some ease.

All Pakistanis love the IPL. They just don't want to admit it. No genuine cricket fan can resist players like Kohli and ABDV going toe-to-toe against Dhoni, Boult, etc.

I mean the thought of Pakistanis secretly watching IPL is enticing for the saffron brigade but literally no one cares or watches the IPL in Pakistan. Only those who are extremely cricket crazy or are bookmakers probably watch it.

In an ideal world, he would be playing county cricket, the Afghanistan test AND all the matches in the England tour.

At least that's how it would have been 15 years ago.
