Virender Sehwag's unusual conversion rate!

Was reading about Root's dreadful numbers the other day and came around this interesting piece of stat:

"Sehwag had a 6 year run (Dec 2003-Dec 2009) in which he scored 13 hundreds (in 54 matches): the first 11 were all 150+ (including two 300s and three more 200s); the last two were 131 and 293.
He's still the only batsman since Bradman to reach 250 four times."

For his style of batting, this is absolutely ridiculous.

His conversion rate is fantastic. More importantly, he generally goes big and looks for 150 or 200+ after reaching 100 mark. Not all players have this kind of hunger and thrive for runs.

And Sehwag obviously used to get them at freaking strike rate.

There has never been a more dangerous Test player than Sehwag on flat tracks. I mean it as a compliment.

Well turning tracks would be more appropriate term than flat. Sehwag never was troubled by any sort of spin on any surface.

He never focused on modifying his game regardless of the surface. I am glad he didn't do that. Otherwise Sehwag would not be Sehwag. All teams would love a player with X factor in their side that too at the top of the order. I remember when India was ready to hunt down 387 against England at chennai, everyone was a bit nervous .


29 overs left for the day with Swann looking threatening . He just smashed the living daylights of all England bowlers . Got out at 117 out of which he made 83. Even though Sachin made a 100 next day, Sehwag got the man of the match award.

It's demoralizing for bowlers when batsmen bats at that pace and also bats long. McGrath, Steyn, Murali ... all have been on receiving end here.

I won't call Sehwag an ATG as well. He was a borderline. If he had done well in 1-2 more countries then he would have gone down as an ATG for me, but very few batsmen have dominated ATG bowlers even at home the way Sehwag did. His best knock came in Galle on rank turner against Murali.

Sehwag has changed the mentality of Indian ODI team. His presence was enough to instill fear in the opposition. He played the same way be it Tests or ODI’s.

He treated spinners with utter disdain. Showed them no mercy. Ashwin in an interview mentioned that Sehwag does not consider spinners as bowlers.

Indians always boast about sehwag test average against Pakistan which is i guess 90. Even Younus khan has same average against India
But my point is majority of his centuries against weak bowling attack of Pakistan consists of rana naveed ,abdur razaq ,sami and half injured akhtar and danish kaneria . All these centuries were useless if i ask u how many test matches viru won for India??
In 2004 India won 2-1
In 2005 series drawn 1-1
In 2006 Pak won 1-0
2006 was the series he averaged 150 but what is the point if u couldn't won series for ur country
In 2007 test series he wasn't part of team
So from 2004 to 2006
3 test won by India
3 won by Pakistan
SO HOW ITS THE DOMINANCE. I DISAGREE WITH THIS FAKE CLAIM
At best sehwag brought equality in indo pak contest which in past were more in favor of Pakistan as the overall facts suggest

Majority of these useless test knocks were on dead rubber of Asia
Stats often mislead and sehwag test average against Pakistan also does the same

As far as his odi average is consider
Its only 34 which is quite mediocre and can't be term ad dominance by any mean
Rana naveed ul hasan singlehandedly won the odi series when Pakistan defeated India in India with a huge margin of 4-2. Rana was the highest wicket taker with one six wicket haul one five wicket haul and one four wicket haul against mighty Indian batting line-up in their own backyard
Rana got sehwag four times cheaply in their total six encounters and exposed sehwag non existent footwork and flawed techniques. Rana got him most of the time with an inswinger in which he faced problem


People like mamoon calling him an ATG how can someone like him could be in league of ATG like sachin lara waugh viv Ponting etc with this kind of technique and foot work


I remember how Anderson gifted him a pair in English conditions in 2011 test series
I remember how Steyn exposed him in south Africa

Sehwag put butts in seats in test cricket. That is his legacy. He added a much needed boost to the sport. He has a great record no doubt but his greatest contribution is he took Hayden/Langer's aggressive opening starts and pumped them full of steroids. He was one of the biggest draws in the game and boy was he fun to watch especially in that ODI series against us in 2002 where the pitches were green mambas.

Easily the most destructive opener ever, for anyone who thinks he's an FTB, check his record in Aus (before his last tour) or 2002 Eng tour & especially 2002 NZ tour! He was equally good in defense as he was with his attacking shots, towards the fag end he simply went into T20 mode while playing tests, which was his biggest fault & led to his rapid downfall.

His main weakness and strength is , he plays only one way regardless of situation, pitch etc. It does not mean he is bad against swing , bounce. He has multiple 100s in australia , green mambas of NZ , pace and bounce of SA and again swing of England. When he is in zone , conditions don't matter.

It took a very long time for teams to realize to get Sehwag out you have to have one day field set not test field set. He thrived under Test field placings. Steyn placed a deep third man straight away for Viru in SA. Most teams started doing that. He was still able to toy with bowlers through off side. Viru did have a decent county stint as well. He made test debut in SA and made 100 in 119 balls coming in at 7. He was forced to open as there was no choice. He was not a natural opener. He even openly said he didn't like opening. Yet he went with it. Someone who has the mindset of no.7 slogger opened the innings for that long and murdered some of the best bowlers in his era. Stop using filters with extraordinarily gifted batsman like Viru. Fact is every goddamn batsman i have seen have struggled against swing with few exceptions like Dravid. It is not like others murdered bowling in swinging conditions. Haven't we seen Punter looking like a school kid infront of Ishant sharma.
