Hello Guys,

I am going to do a three-week short course in NYC during my semester break here in Germany. I am going to do it at the New York Institute of Technology(Manhattan campus). Central Park is nearby.

Since I had grown all my life in Karachi there was nothing interesting stuff like theaters and all that NYC offers. I never got exposure to that stuff. Can you keep me up to minute regarding theater stuff? I want to be educated as much as possible.

What other interesting things can I explore of? It will be the first time ever to put my foot anywhere else in the US?

Any suggestions that make my first ever trip more memorable?

Thanks

Asad

NYC has two museums, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and National History Museum that are the best of its kind anywhere on the globe. You can easily spend a week between these two paces and still not be able to see everything!

I check out the statue of liberty, manhattan/times square, brooklyn, coney island, queens, one world trade center and empire state building, if you got the money then attend a yankees game.

I have been living in west village in NYC for 20 years. I can give comments. Age, hobbies, interests? Go out? Drink? what sort of things you like.

I found the actual NYC to be a dirty and outdated kind of place. Felt like something from 1970’s / 80’s.

Ugly dated concrete structures everywhere. Apologies its not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings but just an observation.

If you dont want to spend too much on broadway, you might want to attend the screening of one of the late night shows (stephen colbert, seth myers, trevor noah etc). They are free as long as you register online in advance. One of the few free things I used to do regularly as a student.

You can also do a couple of off-broadway shows - they are generally inexpensive. Another option is getting some discounted broadway show tickets (for same day shows) at the TKTS booth in Times Square.

If you close to CP, there are loads of free things to do. DO visit Sheap meadows and The great lawn with Central Park. Two most beautiful parks of the park to Chill for free. CP also has a thing called summer stage where there are free concerts from around the world musicians for free. See calender below. I have seen junoon, celia cruz , Fela Kuti sons perform and many more famous people.
https://cityparksfoundation.org/summerstage .
The 2nd biggest park is in brooklyn called prospect park. It has the same thing as CP. Its Called BRIC celebrate. Famous musicians play for free here. See schedule .

Just FYI brooklyn is cooler than manhattan now. Neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick are teh cool areas for younger people to be out and about ( music, art galleries cool places to party).Bossa NOva Civic club as an example in bushwick. If you go here you will be invited to after hours illegal spots to party also). Cool areas in manhattan. SOHO, east and west village, Meat packing ( very touristy) but has many high end places to eat and party. Places to avoid at all times. Times square, mid town in general.
If you want desi food. Best high end indian restaurant is Indian accent. Expensive and amazing, Next Junoon also is very very good. Gup Shup is another new spot i have not tried. If you want cheap halaal. Nothing beats Handi in murray hill. However the lower end desi food in NYc is not as good as chicago or london. Plenty of off broadway shows to catch , especially in east village area. Best pizza hands down in new york is in brooklyn called Lucallis. Its a ust go place. Reasonable price. Anyway shoot me more specific questions and i will answer

After living here what the best thing to do as a tourist is in nyc i would say go to the outer borougs to the ethnic neighborhoods to enjoy the diversity. Go to their restuarants, go to their bars. Almost feels like you are in those countries.
JAckson heights for things desi
Brighton beach/ coney island for all things Russian/Ukrainian
East harlem: Mexican
West Harlem: African American
Flatbush brookln: Carribean ( best goat rotis)
Flushing: Chinese
Astoria queens: Arab one area and Greek one area
Bay ridge: Smaller lebanese area
Korea town in manhattan is nice also so is china town ( though a bit touristy)
Avoid Little italy at all costs in manhattan.

If you are going to visit one city while you are in NYC it has to be MONTREAL. My 2nd favorite city in north america after NYC. If you are here in july you can go there and see the world blues and jazz festival. Its all over the city and most of it is free. What a city. Food, people , culture, music scene and cheaper due to the stronger US dollar.Much better than boston/DC option in my opinion. As one author whose name i am forgetting once wrote. Montreal is like france, minus the french attitude.

Tell su your (actual) age and interests and may be we can help! I took some courses at NYIT back in the days so I am pretty familiar with the area. Central park is next door and I would venture out there to do out doorsey stuff. It is always beautiful in Summer and esp in Fall. I think ppl mentioned some good suggestions, theater is for old ppl and who have plenty of time (to sit). Things move fast, so enjoy your time and make sure buy the metro card and get lost in the subway (take trains to some outer-boroughs, def not Bronx :) but head out to Queesn, BKlyn and upper east side. Take a free ferry ride to Staten Island and back. Just go outdoor and you will never be bored in NYC. As for ppl saying NYC is dirty, either they are living in Singapore or have never seen a city as big as NYC. I don't like NYC (lived there for almost a decade) but NYC is the mother of all Cities and this coming from a guy who have been to all major world cities on all 6 continents (except Moscow or any Indian cities).

Joe’s Pizza! There’s a few decent breweries in hell’s kitchen area which are pretty cool. There’s the legend of Peter Luger for NY’s best porterhouse.

Jetski in the hudson river. Absolutely amazing experience. You will need to take the tour from Pier 13 in Hoboken.

There is a small Pakistani restaurant called BK Jani in Brooklyn (go to Dekalb market branch), it has the most amazing burger (classic Jani) you will ever eat.

My suggestion would be not to listen too much to all the hype and build up your hopes too much. I hated the city and would never want to go back.

Where will you be staying? I'm a few minutes from the Met in UES. Also, from Karachi.

Midtown has the most to offer in terms of theater. It has the highest concentration of broadway and off-broadway shows.

Museums are dispersed throughout the city. The obvious ones are the Met, AMNH, MoMA, and Cloisters (not a tourist attraction given its in Bronx but well worth a visit).

If you will be staying in Manhattan, definitely venture out to the other boroughs. For example, Queens (Jackson Heights and Flushing) and Brooklyn. The diversity alone sets these two places apart from anywhere else in the world.

Try BK Jani in Brooklyn.

Go to a comedy show (Comedy Cellar is a good venue).

Go to a baseball game (Yankees or Mets).

Go to Bryant Park and Washington Square Park, in addition to Central Park.

Other useful tips to help you survive: Get an Amazon Prime subscription, stand to the right on escalators, and make yourself familiar with the MTA subway map.

Happy to answer any questions that you may have. You will love it here.

It seems like you need a lifetime to explore NYC. Good sugestions. I would like to take that skytrain thing (if you know what it is)and where I should take it from ) that would allow me to see the NYC from sky?

Some nice suggestions made here already about the city. Long Island has nice beaches, I think you can take LIRR straight to long beach if you don't want to drive.
