Pakistan limited-overs captain Sarfraz Ahmed hopes that leg-spinner Shadab Khan will achieve a lot more in the future after bagging the man-of-the-match award in his first-ever appearance for the national team.

Shadab, 18, on Sunday accounted for three Windies batsmen in the first of the four-match T20I series giving away only seven runs in his four overs. Pakistan then chased the 112-run target with six wickets in hand courtesy veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik’s solid 38 off 29.

Sarfraz said in the video message for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB): “The first match of any series is important and thanks to Almighty we won it.”

The wicketkeeper-batsman then admired his bowlers’ performance. “I would like to give credit to the bowlers. Imad [Wasim] gave us a great start, then Shadab, followed by our pacers Wahab [Riaz] and Hasan [Ali] who bowled really well. Especially Wahab, the two overs he bowled against the wind, it was quite difficult to bowl in those conditions.”

The 29-year-old then explained what it means for the young leggie Shadab, to perform so well in his debut match. “The way Shadab bowled, it was his first match and he deserves a lot of praise for that. I think it would be a big day for him and his family because he represented Pakistan today for the first time and was the man of the match. I congratulate him and his family.”

Sarfraz said Shadab’s debut performance was a sign that a lot more can be expected from the youngster. “This is a good sign for his career. He bowled superbly in the first match he played and helped Pakistan bag a win with his leg-spin. I am hopeful that he will achieve much more in the future.”

Pakistan, who lead the four-match T20I series 1-0, will play the second T20I against West Indies on Thursday.

The T20I series will be followed by three ODIs and as many Tests.

It's shocking that someone who is awful in this format is still playing

Still can not believe that they did not play PSL's best Rumman Raees. Also Shenwari has deadly yorkers. Bowlers like these are made for this format.

Wahab can't believe his luck. Despite being the worst bowler in the game he gets praises from his skipper.

correction!!:) This series is a golden opportunity for the dead wood like Wahab,Misbah,Malik,Hafeez to stamp their authority for another two years. West Indies is a team you want to play if your career is in danger.:salute

Remember Shenwari in 2013 when he got taken to the cleaners by Sri Lanka in UAE? Gave away about 55 runs in 4 overs.

comparing Shinwari making his debut with Wahab who should be in his prime by now in unfair.

However I think Rumman deserves in the team ahead of Shinwari.

Tanvir and hafeez should be dropped. Shinwari and Ruman are the future they should play.

one thing I suppose we can take away is that sarfraz is exhibiting all the right signs of a good captain so far, at least in terms of man management if not strategy. I'm hearing he is very supportive of his players, has solid choices and arguments for his choices and is encouragingly positive in his criticism.

its up to his players to repay his faith now.

It almost doesn't matter who. Just anyone new, really, from like the top 3-4 in the country. Playing Windies is a chance to blood new talent; the PCB missed that boat in the UAE series. It would be criminal, and therefore possibly inevitable, that they fail yet again to seize the opportunity.

Sarfraz try to motivate Wahab it seems.

Raees should play the next game. I think Raees could be a good opinion in t20s and odis.

He went for 8.75 RPO when the team scored at 5.5 RPO - really poor!

Arthur has to talk to him and tell him that saving runs is also be important in the shorter forms of the game. He thinks of himself as Shoaib Akhtar.

I think he was using his new shortened run-up method in the 1st T20 like he's been doing in PSL 2. Then again he needs to pick up more wickets, it's like he cares about pace too much; all the batsman has to do is touch/time it sweetly in gaps and he's cashing in runs.
