Misbah-ul-Haq press conference after announcement of the squad for the England tour.

"We won't have net bowlers or any county opposition etc. We need to do practice all amongst ourselves. We need to make two squads from this 29-man squad and handle our resources. This is why we have taken a lot of bowlers so we can practice properly.

"Same COVID-19 rules are there like concussion rules. If anyone has symptoms during a match then you need a replacement so we need a lot of players.

"We included all our centrally contracted cricketers besides Haris who opted out. We want to give exposure to all the cricketers who are our future.

"We have spoken to Wahab and if needed, he will be available for practice matches and also Test matches.

"Sohail Khan was picked so we have an extra option. He performed well in England previously and we have the option of another experienced bowler.

"Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Hasnain, it's a good opportunity for them to play in England during the camp matches, etc. It's a great opportunity to groom them for red-ball cricket.

"Some names may be missing since we are playing only 3 T20Is. It's difficult to take specialized squads, and our main focus is on the Test matches. We tried to take those players who can provide us an option in red ball cricket.

"We picked Bilal last time against Bangladesh as they had a lot of lefties. But in England, we felt a left-arm spinner can be effective so we kept Kashif in the squad.

"When you bring a player in the squad, that is to play him. But you can't assure anyone that they will play. It depends on the conditions, combination, etc. If Fawad is in the team, we obviously believe he is capable of playing at that level. Let's see what happens on the ground. It's a great opportunity for him with Haris out. Hopefully he does well when he gets a chance.

"The medical team is in touch with the players. I am also in touch with them and we all understand what to do if there are any symptoms. Everyone is taking precautions.

"We have reserves as well so that we can cover in case anything happens before departure. The circumstances are unusual and some things are out of our control.

"I think our players are mentally strong enough. They are ready and they have belief that Allah will save us from this pandemic.

"We will try to play at least 2-3 practice matches. Sohail Khan provides an additional option in the squad because of the amount of cricket we have to play. We also kept his previous performances in England in mind as well as his recent domestic performances.

"We invested in Musa and will do that in future but if you look at the squad, we already have youngsters like Hasnain, Haris, Naseem so we needed some experienced backup as well. We have Haider and Khushdil in the squad as well. So we tried to keep a balance in the squad.

"It will be difficult to start but as we go into the grounds and get into the matches, things will improve. Hopefully things go well and and the ENG v WI series goes well, then everyone's nerves will be eased.

"Some of the players have toured England before and have performed well. Then, looking at the bowling form of Shaheen, Naseem and Abbas, bowling with the Dukes ball, then we have an experienced batting lineup that is high on confidence. Babar is a different player, Abid Ali and Shan Masood have done well. Spirits are high and we are confident so we have a good chance.

"Haider Ali has come through the setup with performances in U19, Emerging team, red-ball cricket (around 600 runs). Then people weren't sure if he's a T20 player but he came into PSL and performed like that. He proved himself as an all-formats batsman. When shot-making and aggression was required, he did that. When disciplined cricket was needed, he made runs in 4 day. So we're looking forward to his development and hopefully he can also perform at the top level in a similar way.

"It's very good and encouraging for me that Younis Khan is with the team. We have played together and a lot of the players have also played with him and they understand eachother. The likes of Azhar Ali, Shan Masood, Asad Shafiq have batted alongside him so they understand eachother and they have seen how he performed everywhere. We all know his work ethic and how he gives his 100%. He will be a big help.

"We were also thinking that since we will have two squads then we can share the workload and work on different things. It'll be a big help for me to have Mushy bhai, Younis Khan and others.

"We believe that the 2nd best keeping option still is Sarfaraz. He has done well since being dropped and he has a good prior record. He's also a good keeper and we have to keep that in mind.

"We have youngsters like Haider and Khushdil in the squad. But we also need to have a balance in the squad. Juniors should be given exposure in a way that they play with seniors and ready themselves for international cricket. I think Malik and Hafeez have performed well in the previous series. If the T20 WC doesn't happen then it's likely to be next year. That's not so far away and these two can play till then. We're not sure yet but at the moment, they have performed well so we kept them in the team alongside youngsters.

"We often judge keepers' performance by their runs only. In England, you need to look at how a keeper performs with the gloves. It's not easy to do that in England. I think you need experience there and Sarfaraz has performed well there previously. Now he isn't under the captaincy pressure as well. Overall, I think it's important to bank on such experienced players for such series.

"T20I series is important. Being a top-ranked team, it's important for us after losing 2 series previously to perform well. If we win and perform well, it will increase our confidence. At the same time, we need to look toward the future. Our youngsters are settling down and we need to take them forward toward more maturity.

"In our previous 2 series, our top 5 have been excellent. Our biggest plus has been Babar Azam's performances at #4 and the way he performed in Australia and after that. He is playing like Younis bhai would, leading the way and hitting hundreds, making big scores and dominating the opposition. That's an encouraging sign.

"The push ups celebration was based on a promise I made after our efforts at Kakul. It was a commitment. If any player has any celebration planned, that's fine but as a team we don't have anything specific in mind.

"Amir has a genuine reason. His wife had a genuine reason for not being able to travel. We need to understand these type of things. Why would he deliberately avoid playing, especially in conditions where he can perform well? We shouldn't doubt these things. Haris as well. We should respect players' personal issues and not doubt them.

"The boys are hungry now after staying away from cricket for a long time. They'll be fresh and missing cricket, ready to go. That month they'll put their heart and soul into their practice and that can work in our favour.

"Wahab Riaz is there as backup and support. He will play the side matches. We need to realize that these aren't normal conditions. They are unusual circumstances and you have to do unusual things. We can't have two separate squads and we need to cope."

Big news on Wahab this, lets see if he is needed and if so, how does he perform.

I would play him especially considering the matches are mainly at Old Trafford. He is the only experienced express pace bowler we have. Him, Shaheen and Naseem would be a great attack

Would probably be need for certain venues . Unlike Shaheen who is a lock regardless of venue.

Ideally, he should not be needed at all in Tests, though it will be good to have him play inter-squad practice games

I wouldn't invest time and Test matches into someone who won't feature long term in the format for Pakistan to be honest even if Wahab's bowling suits Old Trafford.

Plus Wahab was in the XI in the 2016 Old Trafford Test and we still conceded nearly 600.

However it's good he'll be there for support.

Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq says adapting to the conditions and safety protocols during the England tour will be difficult but his mentally-strong players are ready for the challenge.

England will host Pakistan in bio-secure environment due to the health risk posed by coronavirus pandemic.

"These are unusual circumstances. There will be different protocols in place for the tour because of the existing world situation. It is going to be difficult for the players and officials but we have to adapt accordingly," Misbah said during a media interaction.

Pakistan announced a 29-member squad on Friday for the extended tour comprising three Tests and as many T20 internationals. The Pakistan Cricket Board is also sending 14 officials for the tour.

"I and Dr Sohail Saleem have had interactions with the players on the tour and everyone understands the situation. We have prepared them for every situation like a player testing positive or showing mild symptoms. Having to train in isolation for four weeks. Staying in a 14-day quarantine, playing before empty stadiums and adapting to the on-field SOPs," he said.

"It is not an easy situation for us as we haven’t played cricket for three months but I am counting on this factor of the players having missed playing cricket and being hungry to get back on the field. We have a good squad to pick from and we can do well in English conditions," Misbah said.

He said the selectors had picked 10 pace bowlers and four spinners in the squad because the bowlers will find it the most difficult to adjust to the new playing conditions like not using saliva to shine the ball.

Misbah felt that players while training in isolation will have ample time to adjust and it is also a good opportunity for the young players in the side to gain exposure.

Misbah, also chief selector, said it was not an easy selection process as ideally one likes to have different squads for different formats.

"But we have done our best and I know 29 is a lot of players but we have tried to ensure we have both specialists for red and white ball formats because we go and come back together."

He also welcomed the inclusion of Younis Khan as batting coach of the team and said the players in the side will learn a lot from him.

"I have played a lot with Younis and the good thing is many players have played alongside him and they understand each other. Most of us understand his mentality, game plan, work ethics and planning," he said.

"Younis will be a big help for us and we know he will give 100 percent. He will be a big help to me and we can share workload during our camp in England and it will be easier for me to handle 29 players."

To a question about batsman Haris Sohail pulling out of the tour, Misbah felt it gave Fawad Alam a good opportunity to grab the chance.

"Look if we have picked Fawad in the team it is because we believe he can play at the top level."

Wasnt playing FC cricket one of the criteria of test selection?

Also Wahab changed his mind? He was retired and wasnt available for Aus tour where he was needed and we had to take youngsters. Though I feel for him as he is 34 and bowls at a much higher pace than Amir and everybody was calling him out for test retirement by including him with Amir who was much younger than Wahab.

Naseem, Shaheen and Abbas will start. I'll take Wahab over Shinwari, Sohail or Imran as the fourth seamer if need be, Hasnain over them too.

It seems the likes of sohail and imran are there to play the practice matches and bowl in the nets
Perfectly ok with that

Complete mismanagement by Misbah. Wahab has retired from Tests but will be available for practice matches as well as Tests if needed.

What a circus show.

I doubt that from the article above *back up/Support*

I think he going to be intra matches could just ball short pitched bowling to help them encounter archer dont see him playing any matches thou

Do what do you call Express Hussain, naseem or rauf not express enough he wont play tests matches defo half 30 chance in t20s

So Wahab retired from Tests, but now available for practice and Tests. He's pseudo-retired or what? Or is he half retired or just retired from Asian conditions? Maybe he's just tired! :13: You can't make this stuff up. :salute

Wahab as mentor for Naseem and Shaheen? Not a bad thing.

Waqar Younis is overrated (as a coach/mentor)

Cannot believe Waqar keeps okaying the selections of mediocrity like Imran Khan, Sohail Khan, Musa Khan etc yet he's meant to be the Wikipedia of fast bowling.

It's not that hard to understands, these are extraordinary times. In the case that there is a need for a COVID substitute, or some injuries with the main bowlers, Wahab will be available.

Wahab's retirement was for an indefinite period of time anyway; he kept the door for his return open.

Has he retired or not What is this circus by misbah?

Are there no more than 5 options in pakistan that we have to recall has beens and put on standby retired bowlers?

It seems the likes of sohail and imran are there to play the practice matches and bowl in the nets
Perfectly ok with that

so practice against these trundlers and then face Mark wood, Jofra Archer, Anderson and Woakes... Misbah is regarded the most intelligent cricket brain lol..

Didn't think of that. If that's the case, then bringing Wahab for practice wouldn't be such bad idea. Although I'd question Misbah & management, as well as Wahab himself if he somehow plays in the test series considering he retired from the format.

he is a clown , what better can he do... Compared to what MA took in 2018 and still draw the series under new test captain shines bright to me

To just look at this incompetent idiot has selected shows huge amount of difference in thinking about the future... Im 100% sure Haider Ali will not get a single game...Nearly 80% sure Naseem Shah will warm the bench and Wahab will play instead of him....Misbah thinks cricket is a game for 35+ olds... He is kind of taking revenge that he debuted at 33yrs , he wants the rest of the nation to do the same....

It is hard to understand.

Wahab is a mediocre 35 year old bowler who averaged 37 in England 4 years ago when he was 31 years old.

Could Misbah not find anyone else to take on tour in these “extraordinary times” instead of dragging this mummy out of retirement?

A 25 years young Wahab averaged 27 in England in 2010.

A 31 year relatively old Wahab averaged 37 in England in 2016.

A 35 year geriatric and retired Wahab would probably average 50+ in England in 2020.

Does Misbah not see this?

What a circus show.

I think we should blame imported con artist Wasim Khan for this. He was the one who did fake advertisements and brought incompetent Misbah who doesn't even qualify for the job criteria.

Another presser today by Misbah:

"Haris' case was purely about his family's concerns. They were not convinced and he has to respect their decision and thus pulled out of the tour. Except him, the others are fine and ready to tour England. They're satisfied with the SOPs, etc.

"At the moment, ECB is thinking about the restart of international cricket and that's important for us. We're not keeping in view something that ECB has to do for us in return. It's important for us to restart international cricket and get the players back on the ground. Obviously, in the bigger picture, we're not expecting anything in return but we do want, not only ECB, but other cricketing nations to help each other and tour countries and play cricket, so that this game can grow. It's important for cricket fans in Pakistan that teams start touring Pakistan."

"If you look at it overall, it is a disadvantage that England will get to play some matches. But I'm hoping if we arrive four weeks before and get time for preparation and make use of it - that's why we're bringing 29 players. Mostly they are for the longer version, so the mindset is to come, start practicing and get match practice before the Tests. You could say it's a slight disadvantage but if we make use of that month properly, I think we can still be ready."

"It's always difficult (without fans), you need the atmosphere, you love that as an international player. Sometimes you need energy and backing. It's always good to play in front of a crowd because you miss that when there's no one. No one understands that better than us because we played much more cricket than any other team with empty stadiums in UAE. Sometimes, it's difficult for the players to motivate themselves. But in the bigger picture, if we resume international cricket, we have to start from somewhere. The health and safety of people is important so this is what we have to do right now."

[Regarding Yasir Shah] "It's difficult for me to exactly say where the players are because since March, everyone's at their homes. We are having online sessions etc., but we're not practising and playing together. When we go to England and start training, that will be the most crucial period for us. Spinners need to bowl a lot to get back into rhythm, especially leg-spinners, so that will be a challenge, for him to get into his form. He needs to work very hard."

"Haider is a good, young promising batsman. The best thing about him is that he came through the system and performed well at U19 level. It's a problem when you go from U19 to FC cricket, it takes time but the quality of Haider is that he came into FC cricket and performed well with the red ball, scoring heavily in the domestic season. In One-Day cricket, he hit a hundred for the Emerging. Then everyone was thinking he's a good long format player and he got a chance in T20s, people thought he might not be good for the shortest format. But the way he batted in PSL and the type of shots he played against some top bowlers showed his class. He emerged as an overall cricketer. We thought it's the best time to invest in this youngster, especially coming to England with a long preparation period, he has a good chance to play some good bowlers including in the side matches, that could really help him to develop. We're looking forward to how he goes in international cricket and I'm confident."

"My prayers and well wishes are with Shahid Afridi, may Allah get him out of this soon. I think he was doing a lot of work in the areas of Balochistan and the Northern Areas to help the needy people. He was helping the poor throughout this COVID situation and doing a great job. Well wishes with him to get well soon."

"Everyone knows that Naseem Shah has proved himself in international cricket in a short period. Not only is he quick but he has control and he can swing and reverse the ball, he has a good bouncer. He isn't one-dimensional, he has everything that a quality fast-bowler needs. He can surprise good batsmen and he's an asset for the Pakistan team. Hopefully he stays fit, he's working hard on his fitness. If he stays fit and keeps working hard, I think he'll emerge as a big star for Pakistan in future."

Australia didn't pick starc in the ashes until they had to
Pakistan should do the same

Pick the team for the conditions and how far the key goes into the grass on the pitch , rather than net form and crowd favourites

Wahab has never been a test specialist even before he retired
We may as well have brought mohammed sami on tour

I agree I'd question it if he did start the test series but I dont think he will

Sohail and imran are similar to anderson and woakes obvs not in the same league

Wahab is thier to ball short pitched bowling like archer and wood will be when they face Pakistan

The thread title is a little misleading as there's lots of comments from Misbah on other topics aside from Wahab's inclusion

We have to pick a topic for the title. Can't fit in everything. Unfortunately, most people just read the title and not the rest of the comments.

Where has Wahab announced that he has made himself available for Test cricket again?

Is Misbah just assuming this or has he got his word for it?

He’s picked an older, slower and considerably less fit Sohail Khan - he’s going to be a bigger issue than Wahab.

The way Misbah said it, it sounded like it's a temporary measure for this tour, and that he would only be used in the actual Tests if required, i.e., unusual circumstances. I don't think he will be a front line option for the Test team.

He might play both wahab and sohail to back it will say they are preferred because of thier batting skills. Misbah might destroy whatever good work that MA did

Seems like a last resort option if illness and fitness issues materialise.

I can't imagine Wahab will be desperate to play a Test match after retiring from the format.

Might not be desperate, but he's already there and only gets paid in match fees now that he's not contracted, so makes sense if he wants to play a one off game.

And in he goes in the final 20 for the Test squad...

Wow retirement and now back in reckoning for Tests.

Wahab Riaz seems to be a favourite of Sky!
