As Sri Lanka played Zimbabwe in the second One-Day International (ODI) of the ongoing series at the Galle International Stadium on Sunday, debutant Wanidu Hasaranga became the first Sri Lankan cricketer to bag a hat-trick in the format on debut. Zimbabwe’s victory in the first ODI had made the second a must-win for the hosts, who displayed top-notch bowling that restricted Zimbabwe at 155. Hasaranga, who was handed the ball in the 26 th over, pulled off the heroic in the third over of his spell. He got the wickets of Malcolm Waller (38), Donald Tiripano (0) and Tendai Chatara (0).

Winning the toss, Sri Lanka elected to bowl. The hosts dominated from the very beginning and did not let any big partnership form. Though Hamilton Masakadza (41 off 56) showed resilience, he could not find support from the other end. After Lakshan Sandakan did the damage and cleared the top-order with is career-best 4-for-52, Hasaranga got rid of the tail to bundle the visitors within 33.4 overs. He got Waller and Chatara bowled while Tiripano was caught plumb. With his heroics, Hasaranga became the third cricketer to get a hat-trick on ODI debut, after Taijjul Islam (Bangladesh) and Kagiso Rabada (South Africa).

He also is the fifth Sri Lankan and the first spinner of his country to take ODI hat-trick. Others are Chaminda Vaas (2), Lasith Malinga (4), Parvez Maharoof and Thisara Perera. Hasaranga did not take the help of any fielders for his hat-trick and is the 13th bowler to do so.

These Sri Lankans produce quality talents out of nowhere.

And then they disappear forever. What happened to Ajantha Mendis, Thirimanne, Prasad and more ? Something is clearly wrong with development of these players. They aren't groomed, they are forever stuck with initial talent.

Ajantha Mendis was bound to fail, Thirimannea is out of form, Prasad terminally injured,
