"Waqar has almost thrown Misbah under the bus" : Mickey Arthur on Waqar's comments on selection

"Batting will become tougher now at the Gabba due to inconsistent bounce, the first innings was crucial"

"Azhar Ali was out LBW twice in the A game also, getting his weight across the crease a little bit. He's pivotal to the lineup. When he's playing well, his weight is going towards the ball. He played beautifully in the 1st inns, his weight was going towards the ball. Early on, as with a lot of openers, they get their head onto off-stump and take their weight across the crease, rather than forward. If that happens, you don't know where your leg-stump is, you try to play a ball too square and become susceptible to LBW. If he gets in and plays another 10-15 balls, you'll see his weight going down the ground and he'll be punching the ball and getting into better positions"

"Haris Sohail was very disappointing, there's a trend, he's been out caught behind four times with back of a length deliveries outside off. He doesn't get back in his crease, he doesn't cover his offstump and pushes forward at deliveries he should be leaving alone. Haris plays well in UAE because the ball doesn't bounce at that length, he can punch the same ball through the covers. Here there's extra bounce, he hasn't made any definite movement back and he hasn't used the crease to get back and across so he flays at a ball he shouldn't be playing at. That's a worrying trend, it's 4 in 4 for him. He should be deep in his crease, covering the off-stump and any ball outside his eyeline can be left alone. He is the future, he is a good player he moves the game forward when he gets in. But clearly here on bouncy wickets, he needs to do some work. If they work on that in the nets, he can play in these conditions. At the moment, he's been found out a bit and he needs to remodel his technique a bit"

"Asad Shafiq got a good one. The ball he got was going over the top of off-stump. The bounce is hard for him to counter here, he can't do much besides leaving the ball alone there"

"It was good to see Shan Masood pulling today, he pulls well but didn't in the first innings. He's a better player when he pulls and when you do it well, it tells a lot about your mindset and your feet and balance"

"I'd open with Imam and Shan, I was surprised Imam wasn't playing here. I would have Azhar at 3"

(Waqar Younis saying playing Abbas is coach's decision) "I find that absolutely absurd. First and foremost, Mohammad Abbas had to be playing in this Test match. Secondly, I can't believe that Misbah didn't talk to his bowling coach before he made the decision. He's almost thrown Misbah under the bus there. If I was head coach and one of my staff said that in a presser, I'd be seriously annoyed with him. It was a wrong decision. I can't believe that he wouldn't have had a say in that selection. Once you select a player, the team and support staff are united and everyone takes equal responsibility for the side that goes out"

"I would've preferred to go in with 5 bowlers. They don't have the option in this squad. I think Shadab gives them the 5th bowling option, he can bat 7, Rizwan 6, Haris Sohail doesn't have to play. That would have been the way I would have possibly gone. Iftikhar deserves a shot as 1 of 6 batsmen. Only 2 guys in Pakistan, maybe 3 who can fulfill those roles: Shadab Khan who has a pretty good Test record, Faheem Ashraf who is a bowling all-rounder who could be the 4th seamer batting at 8. Shadab and Faheem together give you one batsman"

"Babar is like my adopted son, he's got a wonderful family. A wonderful dad and brothers who support him consistently, they travel around and watch him. I have a special bond with him and I enjoy watching him bat and I enjoy seeing him do very well"

"I thought Babar was conscious of his dismissal in the first innings, he left well outside the off stump. He drives really well. That probably was in mind, I don't think he'll make the same mistake twice. He defended and left well, I hope we can sit and watch him for the whole day tomorrow"

"If you can get Babar, Shan getting hundreds and some runs from the others, you can get some positives to take to Adelaide. So hopefully a hundred from Shan Masood and a big hundred from Babar Azam"

Misbah should be made accountable as selector and coach. Waqar now is simply there to coach the bowlers.

Dont see what mickeys issue is here.

No surprise and have to say WY is right - he is just the bowling (that too probably pace bowling) coach while Misbah is Godfather of PCT - Head Coach, CS, batting coach and mentor of Captain. He should have explained the selection logic, rather than the bowling coach.

Mickey going through analysis of sohails batting, shouldnt he have been working on this when he was a coach? As usual hindsets a great thing.

How can Waqar throw Misbah under the bus? Misbah is literally the selector and head coach. Waqar is just a bowling coach.

Something like this cannot be changed overnight. Haris needs to accept responsibility for his own development aswell. The top players work on their game, they don't get mollycoddled by their coaches to get better.

Mickey a little too harsh on Waqar as he did not 'throw Misbah under the bus'. Nor did he absolve anyone of their responsibility in the Imran selection. His interview is on Youtube.

SPOT ON from Mickey and exactly what I've been saying.

How the hell can Waqar distance himself from the bowling selections when HE'S the bowling coach, and is de facto the assistant coach who has Misbah's ear.

Waqar cannot talk about being a difficult spot with three teenage bowlers and an over the hill "32 year old" trundler when HE okayed their selections in the place !

Man up and take the responsibility.

Waqar is not a mere spectator though, he ran the bowling camp before the Australia camp.

He surely had a vote on bowling selections, and these selections have backfired horribly. Now he wants to shift all the blame on Misbah and duck his responsibility. Exactly why PCB shouldn't have rehired him for the fifth time.

I believe, the main reason is ego - WY didn’t accept his demoted status. But, here he has a point, unless he is twisting words - may be he wasn’t entertained in that discussion between captain & coach of selecting playing XI.

Yes. Now he is saying he would not have played Harish. Would he have said the same thing before the game started?

Mickey clearly wants his job back and would not miss any opportunity to create a rift. Such a mean guy.

What were Pakistan's test results like under Mickey? Lost even to Sri Lanka at home.

Well, to select a team, Misbah doesn't need to discuss with anyone, does he?
You need the coach and selector to have a discussion. Misbah had a discussion with himself and selected the team.

The only thing that drives me crazy about Mickey is his continued support for Shadab and Faheem. For god's sakes man let them go, they're bang average. Also Imam's Test record is nothing to shout about, with only 3 fifties from 19 innings, and is deservedly benched. Abid Ali should be ahead of him.

Only person creating a rift is Waqar by denying he had any role in the bowling selections despite being bowling coach and RUNNING the pre-series bowling camp.

Maybe he thinks by undermining Misbah sufficiently until he's axed, he can re-claim the head coach position for a third time.

Everything about Pakistan cricket is so miserably hopeless right now. Thank you Wasim Khan, lovely accent tho.

"Its upto the selection committee, head coach to decide who will or wont play in next game but to say that Imran Khan Snr's inclusion in the 1st Test team was incorrect would be unfair to him"

What you said won't surprise me but Waqar's statement isn't that bad to be honest.

Brother, Waqar didn't mean it in any negative way. It was not even worth commenting on.

Why would someone pick that line up and make masala headlines out of it?

You'd expect Moyo, Akhtar and Sarfaraz Nawaz doing it.

But Mickey Arthur would stoop to this low level, nobody would've expected that. Clearly he knows how to do politics. Masala ones.

I have absolutely nothing against anything Mickey has said anything here. I will keep harping on it, his problem was that he wanted to bring two batting allrounders in the team to the extent that he didn’t want to play the Misbah way at home. It cost him many home series wins.
And if he is being disingenuous right now and claiming malik, Hafeez, and Sarfaraz should play it’s because he the pcb were disingenuous with him. Misbah did the hatchet job but didn’t have the courtesy to share where they were headed with their decision making and from what Mickey says, actively led him to believe no firing was imminent.

This is on Misbah, and of course let us not forget rameez and wasim were part of the panel

Haha yep.

He's a shameless scam artist. And is being a sore loser.

Our team had become losers too under him.

Don't speak too soon. By all accounts of our performances against SL and Aus, maybe this team overachieved under Mickey.

I think Mickey is making mountain of a mole hill. I saw Waqar's press conference. He said Abbas didn't have the rhythm that he had prior to his injury. Hopefully he will be back for game 2. Where did this sound like he said Waqar said it's Misbah's decisions. Mickey is reading into things a bit too much, its kinda counter intuitive to have a former coach harping around about the current management. I know you are passionate about the lads, but Mickey has to relax a little bit here.

Mickey lost 5-0 down under and made similar mistakes as Misbah.

The simple fact is that out of the three head coaches only Waqar has won a test series down under

Against a weak and listless NZ team undergoing a transition. Against their current team - Waqar’s team would also have been clean sweeped like everyone else..

Man I miss Mickey. He had a vision for playing overseas and was working on getting the pieces in place.
( Granted he cocked it up at home but I expect he would have learnt)

Now we are just back to square 1

What vision did Mickey have abroad

Losing every possible test match in Australia, New Zealand and south Africa?

Misbah and Waqar threw themselves under the bus by picking an unbalanced squad and a bowling attack with

1. No bowler aged in his twenties.
2. No tall right-arm quick. At Brisbane!
3. The best quick dropped.
4. No bowlers who can bat.
5. Three quicks at Brisbane, two of whom need limited workloads as they are teenagers and the other is an unfit grandpa.

A five year old girl in a special needs class could have picked a more sensible team.

Misbah and Waqar deserve the ridicule and contempt of all of us.

Mickey Arthur should be the last person to accuse others of throwing someone under the bus

It's funny how everything is being blamed on selection. As if the super star teams of the past won anything in Aus!
It's about sticking to the set of players that you believe are the best of the lot and giving them ample opportunities to prove themselves and show they're good. If not, then move on. But at least trust your own judgment for a bit and give it time.

Mickey’s vision was to create a test team with two all rounders and to provide a better spinning option than Yasir. He was let down by Asad and Azhar averaging mid 20’s whom he couldn’t/ didn’t replace. Azhar andAsad are doing the same here as well

He was correct to play shadab 7 and faheem 8. He was grooming them as well as imam Babar shaheen.
Senior players failed him ( Azhar shafiq and Yasir even sarfarz) we had to play them though.
Younis and misbah had to play on the last Aus tour but he was laying the groundwork work for a decent team abroad since then.

As above!

The Mickey option would basically have become:

IN ASIA
6 Rizwan
7 Shadab
8 Zafar
9 Sajid
10 Abbas
11 Shaheen

OUTSIDE ASIA
6 Rizwan
7 Shadab
8 Faheem or Amad
9 Naseem
10 Abbas or Ehsan, depending on the ground
11 Shaheen

Misbah always picks a horribly long tail, let down by the fact that his batsmen fail far too often.

Basically all this proves Pakistan will be mediocre for quite a while.

We were told Wasim Khan was a great man, and that with his appointment bright days are ahead.

His panel of “experts” chose Misbah and this is what we have.

So far as bad or worse than what we saw with Mickey.

Misbah and company need to be disposed of in the next few months or prepare for similar defeats.

Once one antagonist in Pak cricket is defeated (Sarfraz) another pops up (Misbah).

It doesn’t matter if WY had a say in the selection or not. He is part of the team that made the selection. He may or may not have power in the team, but publicly he should not say things which blame a part of the team.

The formula is horrible.

1. Elderly underperforming batsmen.
2. No all-rounders creating a long tail.
3. Axing the 20-something bowlers and replacing them with kids and failed grandpas.

Been seeing this since 2011. Gonna be an entire decade of seniors first policy, and Misbah to oversee both periods. What a lull.

Wasim Khan should focus only on the administrative and international matters of bringing back cricket in Pakistan, for which he is making good progress. He can also take charge and work on Marketing/Branding, Player education, etc. But he should not have been involved in team/coach/selection matters when he himself was least aware of Pakistan cricket team recently.

Sacking Mickey and giving all powers to Misbah shows how much he was out of depth in terms of cricketing matters.

And I really laugh at logics of some of the posters here who says they don't count CT 2017, T20 rankings etc. But they are willing to count some of the non consequential series that we have won in Misbah's era very highly. Such biased fact distortion I have never seen...
