Australia opener David Warner will return to a leadership role after being handed the captaincy of the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming Indian Premier League season.

Warner was banned in 2018 from holding an official leadership position within the national team. But this doesn’t apply to overseas franchise cricket.

The left hander originally captained the franchise to their maiden title in 2016 and will take over from Kane Williamson in the role.

Warner scored a phenomenal 692 runs at an average of 69.2, with eight half-centuries and a century in last year’s tournament.

The damaging opener thanked the franchises’ management on social media, declaring he was “extremely grateful” to be given the opportunity to lead again.

The 33-year-old has scored over 4700 runs in his 126 IPL matches.

From a NZ perspective THANK GOD, I wanted him to give him up some responsibilities and stop playing in the IPL (not realistic, it's easy cash) as he's clearly overworked and we've seen this with a lot of Indian players including Kohli. This is the next best thing.

Kane needs some time off, with Warner taking over and Kane probably sitting out a lot of games he can get a paid vacation in India making the big bucks and not give the Indians too much of a look for the WT20.

It was inevitable. Warner has been a very good captain for SRH.

Don’t think Williamson will be missing out on many games. Him, Warner and Rashid are their three best overseas players.

Bairstow is the one who will probably get rotated with Saha to accommodate Mitch Marsh, Stanlake and Nabi.

I hope he does and Bairstow performs to take his spot.

He's playing too much cricket, this way he plays a couple of games, makes bank and stays fresh for the WT20.

Playing in these leagues is pointless for international fans, we don't care who wins and who performs. Only thing that we get from it is knowing our players are making good money outside that we don't even know who won what or when.

Hopefully giving up T20 captaincy is next.

Think Kane can manage ODI and Tests without IPL and T20s.

Ideally the T20 specialists and kids should be playing T20s... still waiting for Chapman and Phillips to become mainstays in the T20 team...

Warner was a good captain for SRH. The ban doesn't have anything to do with franchise cricket.

I think Bairstow and Warner will open, Rashid will play and the final overseas spot will be rotated. Bairstow and Warner had a good partnership on and off the pitch. Don't see that being messed up.

I hope Indians don’t point fingers at Pakistan or franchises who pick banned players due to whatever reasons.

Just goes to show there isn’t exactly any honourable principal when making more money through whatever means is the ultimate goal.

The one who you taking about got banned for ball tempering and other players whom you referring got banned for fixing... Know the difference and if you still think ball tempering and fixing is same just to make you feel good then please carry on

Williamson wouldn't make their team tbh. It is going to be Bairstow, Warner, Nabi and Rashid.

Both of them are cheating and not in the spirit of cricket.

It doesn’t matter. They’re both forms of cheating. Thanks.

So Afridi tampering with the ball is the same as Amir match fixing.

Afridi tampering with the pitch v England 2006 was blatant cheating

Afridi biting the ball on live TV was plain stupidity

'The ball was not deviating at all,' Imran is quoted as saying. 'So I got the 12th man to bring on a bottle top and it started to move around a lot. I occasionally scratched the side (of the ball) and lifted the seam.'

And this man captained Pakistan for what 10 years? Cheater as Amir?
