Was Ahmad Zahir 'The Elvis' of South Asia?

Afghanistan singer Ahmed Zahir had good songs and even resembled Elvis Presley a lot. I heard about him for the first time in Kite Runner and he was the icon of Afghanistan before the mess it came on to become today. He sung some songs in Urdu/Hindi as well along with Dari and Pushto being the main language.

Are you talking about the (original) Western Elvis or the Western Asian Elvis?

perhaps but I've rarely seen it into the generic "South Asia" category.

If anything the WoT has shifted Pak more into the West (AfPak notion, etc).

If you understand farsi you will enjoy his music. He was pretty big in Afghanistan I heard.

I've heard and read about him. He fell out with the Khalq/Parcham government and was found dead, presumably assassinated. He was influential because he introduced western instrumentation (guitar, bass, drums etc) into his music, which was groundbreaking for the time. From what I've read, he remains popular in the Pashto/Dari audience.

Zeb and Haniya's Laili Jaan, from CS Season 6, is originally an Ahmad Zahir tune.
