Here I am analyzing the best batsmen ever overseas in test cricket.I have eliminated Don Bradman as he only played overseas in England and never even toured South Africa.I have made comparison with the statistical giant Sachin Tendulkar ,the yardstick.I have also tried to critically ***** Tendulkar's great overseas performance.

1.ALLAN BORDER
Allan Border fared better in West Indies than Tendulkar ,that too against considerably better bowling .Alan Border was almost Sachin's equal in England .Border championed turning sub-continent wickets in India and Sri Lanka about as well as Tendulkar handled the fast Australian pitches.Unlike Sachin Border hardly played in South Africa.Although Sachin was more dominating it was Border who played a greater role in batting for your life overseas. In 1984 Border was simply a revelation in the West Indies averaging over 74 and saving the test t Trinidad, literally ressurecting his side from the grave.Tendulkar has not in Pakistan equaled Border's 2 150'scored in the 2nd test in 1980.When the chips were down Border played some of the finest knock sin England like at Manchester in 1981 and at Lords in 1985.

2.SACHIN TENDULKAR
Statistically Sachin Tendulkar may be the king but never forget he played in an era when there were more minnow test nations like Bangladesh and Sri lanka which batsmen like Ken Barrington,Sunil Gavaskar,Viv Richards and Alan Border did not.Gavaskar and Border played in an era when headgear was not so developed ,pitches quicker ,no restriction on bouncers and West Indian pace attack was at it's most lethal.Neverthless Tendulkar mastered all types of conditions be it seaming turning or fast wickets.Significantly he outscored Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting oversaes by a wide margin. Some of Tendulkar's best ever knocks were overseas like his 115 at Perth in 1991-92 ,169 at Johannesburg in 1997 and 177 at Trent Bridge in 1996.In addition to his 147 n.o at Durban in 2011 all the 3 mentioned knocks ranks amongst the best test inings ever.

3.STEVE WAUGH
Steve Waugh ,although playing for a champion team;championed the cause better away and was match-winner in England,West Indies and South Africa.Steve 's 200 at Kingston won Australia the Frank Worrel trophy and unofficial world test championship in 1995 and his batting in 1989 enabled Australia to regain the Ashes and win their first Ashes series on English soil since 1975.He also made a major contribution in a series win for the unofficial world test championship in South Africa in 1997 and although not a match-winner adapted superbly i India in 1996 and 1998.On English soil,South Africa and in West Indies Steve performed better than Tendulkar, but did not face the same pressure.Tendulkar bore the brunt of a considerably weaker team when playing anywhere before 2004.Still I rate Steve's knocks on bad wickets overseas as good as anyone's like in Delhi in 1996.

4.RAHUL DRAVID

For some time Rahul Dravid had a better overseas test average than Tendulkar and in the end he had a better average in West Indies,England and New Zealand.I mantain that when the chips were down Dravid was more effective than Sachin overseas and played more innings in tune with the situation the team was facing.Dravid's best series and innings in Australia and England were better than those of Tendulkar with regard to team contribution.Tendulkar's performances were more classy.Remember the 2002 and 2011 series in England and 2004 one in Australia. Tendulkar was considerably better in South Africa.

5.VIV RICHARDS

If you ***** WSC Kerry Packer supertests then Tendulkar has not surpassed Viv Richard's in Australia who amassed 862 run sin 1977-79 or Greg Chappell who scored 621 run sat an average of 69 in West Indies in 1979..Sunil Gavaskar fared better in West Indies, that too against considerably better bowling Gavaskar overshadowed Tendulkar in Pakistan and West Indies but Tendulkar performed better in England and Australia

FINAL RATING

In the final countdown by the slenderest of marginns Allan Border would win my vote as the best overseas batsmen of all.Very close behind battling for 2nd place would be Sachin Tendulkar,Steve Waugh 2nd,Rahul Dravid and Viv Richards.Considering his phenomenal longevity and outstanding statistics I would place Tendulkar at 2nd place. For his outstanding match-wining performances Steve Waugh 2nd.Considering his marvellous consistency in a crisis Dravid would rank 4th . Viv Richards phenomenal domination of great paceman was considered but did not prove himself in acrisis like Border,Dravid or Waugh. 5th.Sunil Gavaskar is at 6th place because during WSC Supertests era he did not face the best pace attack in Australia and was not at his best against the best ever Carribean pace attack in 1983 in West Indies. In 7th place I would place Ken Barrington who had an outstanding average of above 69 overseas .At 8th place I would put Neil Harvey who averaged 10803 in West Indies and 71.9 in South Africa averaging 51.43 overall, away.Hravey was a class act on bad wicket. Then in 9th and 10th place would place Greg Chappell and Younis Khan giving Greg the marginal edger because of his class and the great bowling he faced. At his best Mohinder Amarnath performed overseas better than any batsmen like in the West Indies and Pakistan in 1982-83 in 12 test matches averaging over 68 and aggregaitio nearly 1200 runs with 4 centuries..No batsmen played the great West Indian quartet and Imran Khan better than Mohinder Amarnath, who was a revelation in that period. Jimmy scored 9 centuries away, averaging over 51 and scoring 3000 runs which was remarkable.Amarnath also was ever consistent down under in 1977-78 and in 1985-86.It would be really unfair to rank Jack Hobbs and Walter Hammond here but fascinatingly they averaged more and had a larger aggregate away than at home which was something incredible for his era.Hammond averaged above 66 away,16 more than at home while Hobbs averaged 59.91 away,7.5 more than at home.Ofcourse they played far few overseas teams.Hammond averaged 61 in Australia and 563 in New Zealand while Hobbs averaged 65.5 in South Africa and 57 in Australia. In recent years Hashim Amla has batted with great determination away and deserves to be rated high as an overseas batsmen and so does Jacques Kallis.

My overall order ranking in order of merit of batsmen in overseas test matches.

1.Allan Border
2.Sachin Tendulkar
3.Steve Waugh
4.Rahul Dravid
5.Viv Richards
6.Sunil Gavaskar
7.Ken Barrington
8.Neil Harvey
9.Greg Chappell
10.Younis Khan
11.Mohinder Amarnath
12.Walter Hammond

Below I am re-posting a stats analysis in cricinfo by S.Rajesh in 2010

Overall, Border remains one of the finest overseas batsmen in the last 50 years. Among plaers who've scored at least 3000 overseas runs since 1960, only two - Ken Barrington and Rahul Dravid - have a higher average away from home, which is quite a telling statement considering some of the overseas venues have become much easier for run-scoring now than during Border's time.

Best overseas Test batsmen, from 1960 onwards (Qual: 3000 runs) Batsman Tests Runs Average 100s/ 50s
Ken Barrington 36 3459 69.18 14/ 14
Rahul Dravid 77 6569 57.12 17/ 34
Allan Border 70 5431 56.57 14/ 28

Wow never realised how good Border was till I saw this thread, thanks for the stats. Good thread.

I would love any sachin fan to list me his brilliant innings away from home so I can see how good he was and how decisive he was.
