Was it right to give Shadab Khan a Test debut now?

Lot of discussions on this at the moment; many feel its a tad too early but he could prove all wrong in the next few day?

Opinions?
 
He needs time to settle, I'm sure Misbah will calm him down for his next couple spells.
 
1. Why would you play 2 leg spinners in a test match
2. Mohammad Asghar was hard done
3. Asghar is better talent than shadab in 4 day and odi , Shadab is only good for t-20
4. Shadab is preferred in t-20 ane ODI because of batting , but what is the excuse in tests
 
It was the right time , shadab is good and soon will learn how to bowl in test cricket.

And zahid mehmood is the best leg spinner in Pakistan. Shadab is good enough for test he needs a bit time.

Babar azam is 100 times a better batsmen then any Bangladeshi batsmen.
 
Asghar was more deserving for longer formats.

But Shadab is there, which isn't bad either. Just worried Sarfraz might ruin him - his handling of Shadab in ODIs was horrible.
 
an absolutely right decision, I hope he performs with both bat and ball to cement his spot
 
Its not about whether he is so Young or not but its about he needed a calming influence in the shape of Misbah. Hope he plays another match under Misbah and will be able to learn a lot from the test maestro..
 
A lot of people haven't seen him bat. He's got great potential with the bat too. Can easily become a genuine all rounder. I just hope we don't turn him to a bowler.
 
Asghar shouldn't have bottled his chance in the tour match.

Shadab gives us an extra batsman and WI have struggled against legspin.
 
Seekh jayega.. it's just his first day of test match cricket. We need to give him a long rope.
 
Absolutely the perfect time. Needs to get match practice and (hopefully) confidence with a bag of wickets going into the CT.

In the ODI series, he was far too inconsistent and leaked runs.

Asghar was more than ready for Tests and is excellent himself, hence there is no excuse of "only option available".

i reckon Shadab is playing because the CT is around the corner , otherwise Asghar would have gotten a go

He should have gone back home and played the Pakistan Cup, where the pitches were flat and faced very good players of spin on those flat pitches.

He won't be served with dry wickets like this either and would be a ridiculous reason, if he doesn't do well here.
 
Imo he shouldn't play test matches. He seems better when batsman are coming after him and so he's more of a limited overs bowler. The thing about leg spin is generally ur either a limited overs specialist or test specialist. If u look at all the world class leg spinners in the world like tahir, adil rashid etc. They all play loi cricket but not test cricket because they are specialised in lo where batsmen come after them. For shadab it's the same. He's much better off just playing loi where we rlly need him than playing him out in test and ruining his limited overs cricket. I may be proved wrong but this is my opinion on it. In tests I reckon asghar deserves a chance if yasir fails.

Now it seems a terrible move. We needed 3 pacers here. Shadab is a great talent but it's not the time to give him experience. Windies could win this test. Sohail Khan or even Imran Khan would have been better.

WI have no chance in winning this game, or any of the test matches

its literally their C team
 
The earlier the better, always. Good learning experience for him which will help him become a better bowler. This is not T20 where two tight over will get you a wicket. He needs to work on his leg spinners and ensure he can bowl 6 out of 6 exactly at the same spot.
 
I don't think it was a bad move to introduce him in tests but, he should have played as an allrounder, not as a bowler in a 4 man attack captained by the genius Misbah.
 
There was a time when we used to pride ourselves for bold decisions - seems we have lost all confidence in our youngsters.

This. Pakistan missed a containing spinner yesterday and Shadab is good enough I suspect to play as the allrounder. I just hope the selectors give him some time to find his feet now that they have thrown him in at the deep end.
 
Absolutely. At worst, he will perform as well as Wahab.

And more importantly, he will gain experience from playing under Misbah, alongside Younis and also bowling with Yasir who despite his shortcomings abroad is a brilliant spin bowler and a very good role model.

Shadab wasn't great in the first innings, but he wasn't bad either. Even if he is smashed in the second innings, it will be a useful lesson for him and help him to realise he has a long way to go despite the recent astronomical rise he has had.

Seems like a win win win situation to me. No brainer.
 
Shadab is not ready yet he was picked

Have to question the think tank they picked a rookie18 yr old leg spinner playing his fifth FC game in a 4 man attack especially when you are playing one leg spinner already.Heads should roll after this.

Maybe Wahab should have been picked as a spinner? :D - Hasan's fitness is not known atm
 
Asghar was there he offered an option Shadab is redundant when you have Yasir
 
Pakistan can't go into a test match with just 4 bowlers out of whom 2 are leg spinners.

Clearly missing the 5th bowler in this match.
 
He should have only played as a 5th bowler. Too raw for tests right now but this would've been a great learning curve for him aswell.
 
He has all the tools to be a perfect 5th bowler and lower order batting option for Pakistan. He just needs to be encouraged and given the confidence to perform freely.
 
I'm not sure if he is underbowled because of his back or misbah.
If it is misbah not trusting him it is criminal
Leggies don't do holding jobs like offies can and underbowling him probably has a detrimental effect on shadabs confidence.
We know misbah doesn't like attacking bowlers and prefers control. But then y play him?
 
Why not Its not as if wahab was setting the world on fire

WI are poor players of spin so it was the right decision to give the young leggie a go
 
Tough gig for him on debut in a 4 man attack.

The other options - Wahab, Asghar and an unfit Hasan Ali.
 
It was good decision, you always invest on leggie and it takes time for them to develop. Shadab did not take many wickets but has to go through this tough time and I'm sure learned something from this experience.

Almost all the great leggies Pakistan has produced, including Qair and Mushie, particularly Baoo Qadir did struggle for some time but Imran Khane persisted with him and rest is history.

Only Yasir tasted success from the beginning but he already had 10 years of FC cricket behind him.
 
Yes, he should be batting at 6 playing as an allrounder. Drop Shafiq.

Hopefully he can make it count with the bat in our chase tomorrow. Actually, scratch that, hopefully he doesn't have to come out to bat tomorrow. :ahmed
 
No need to include him in the test. Misbah is not a type of captain who always motivate you and let you to bring out your best as we have seen asghar before. If shadab delivers good spells and get wickets for Misbah he will give you more overs otherwise he will not.

I am hopeful that shadab is not going to loose his confidence as he is going to be a lethal weapon in CT17.
 
It was a good decision. The pitch required two spinners. However Shadab is not suited to Misbah's captaincy simply because Shadab has no control of his line or length compared to Yasir. Shadab goes at 4 RPO because of his lack of control and given the state of the pitch, you couldn't afford to give freebies to batsmen which Shadab does. That's why Misbah has underutilized him.
 
This has to be selectors pressure combined with his larger than life form in ODIs and t20s that must've clouded Misbah's judgement... 3-1 would've been an ideal combination here, and had we got a 3rd seamer, we would've probably got WI out for 50 runs short in each innings... people thought he is gonna outshine Yasir, but alas, he's still not Yasir's class... who is probably one of the greatest leg spinners of all time, stats wise (in his first 10-15 games)
 
T20 against anyone should never be a criteria for Test selection.
 
Still finding a Test match length. You look at his pitch maps and you see he's struggled to hammer away on a consistent length which is what you need to do in Test cricket.

Looks every bit the player who's only had 4 FC matches under his belt.

Still it was a gamble and sometimes it'll pay off, sometimes it won't. PPers keep crying that we don't take risks in selection and trial a youngster even if they don't have much domestic experience - well we've done that and you're still whining.

Asghar would've played if he didn't fail so miserably in the tour match but I don't mind giving him the Dominica Test where the pitch is also likely to favour spin, whilst Shadab can use this as a learning experience.
 
Well, Pak were playing with 3 bowlers in this game.

Not his fault because he was inconsistent in the ODI series is well and looked raw for the Test series, hence poor stuff from the captain and management to still select him.

There is a reason why Yasir debuted around the age of 26-27 and had to toil away in FC because it takes time for a leggie to learn the art of picking up wkts and develop control in the longest format.
 
This was an INCORRECT decision by management, though I fully expected them to do something silly like this. A lot of posters here also seemed to think that Yasir Shah needs competition to do well. It's as if they haven't been watching Yasir's career. Yasir is not a consistent bowler... he takes wickets in clumps and he is still our top spinner by miles! He can win matches on his own, if everything lines up right for him.

Including Shadab was a mistake on multiple counts. The first being that he wasn't ready. He just tasted success in the limited overs format, so why rush him into the test team? Did we have a dire need of another spinner? It's such a random decision! Second, another fast bowler in this match might've given us the edge. Even if it wasn't Wahab, any one else would've been a better option than Shadab.
 
In hindsight, no it wasn't. But you can't really blame the management. Who could've guessed he would bowl so poorly?
 
Said it the moment he was selected in the Test squad that he was rushed in. Were we really THAT desperate to include another leggie? Let the guy establish himself in the ODI/T20 squads first for crying out loud. You don't just randomly throw a newbie in the Test arena. Bad management.
