He was a fabulous ODI batsman best along with Sachin in his time but why didnt have a good test career? Only thing i rem about his test career is the Brisbane 100 in 2003-2004 tour and the double 100 against Pak in 2007. He is no near the top-10 when it comes best indian test batsman could he have achieved more?

You chose a wrong time to open this thread.

Pakistanis are busy with Eng series.

Indians are busy with WI series. :P

He did underachieve. Got off to a great start scoring back to back hundreds at no 3 in England.

I think he was an over achiever with his technique. But mentally was super tough.

Is Saurav Ganguly an ATG?

Is Ganguly an ATG? Or is that stylish guy only an Indian ATG material?
I remember once Sachin complements like "on offside, there is God and then Ganguly"

Dravid said that, not Sachin. He was a good player, above average. But not an ATG. As a captain, he was fabulous.

Yes, he underachieved. Lost that run-flowing ability after getting involved completely into the captaincy. He was averaging 49 in tests between 96-99.

An ATG captain and a very good test batsmen IMO.

Ganguly had too many holes in his technique to be a ATG.

He is fisherman out his off stump. Foot movement is minimal and his ability to handle short ball is lolworthy.

A terrific player of spin and can score big when the ball loses its shine.

Overall, an Indian Great. Not an ATG. Far from it.

I actually think he performed up to his potential in both ODIs and in tests. He had some obvious weaknesses in his game. Was very stylish batsman though.

He was obviously far better than Kohli in every department, whether it be skills, heart or technique .... isn't it?

A very good batsman, and ODI great, a very good Test batter. Probably underachieved a bit in Tests due to issues with Chappell and never consistent batting position.

He was average Test batsman , but because of his captaincy he played so many. Otherwise there were others in domestic cricket better than him , who never got opportunity.

One of my all time favourite Indian players. A very good ODI batsmen and a good test player. Don't think he is an ATG but an Indian great without a doubt.

Greg Chappel ended his career. Ganguly hardly played in a pressure free environment in his last 3 years of international cricket, always being in and out of the team. I believe he had atleast another 2-3 years left but was forced to leave

For a brief time he was one of the top openers of the world in ODI’s..

In tests he was okayish I think he did perform as per his potential in tests.. Not an ATG but an Asian great in ODI’s and a top notch captain..

He was simply sick and tired of being dropped just to promote youngsters, and decided to retire. He was the second highest scorer in the world after Kallis in Tests during 2007. Yet he retired in 2008.
